W H AT W E D O About Us Our Mission The Fairfield County Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and its supporters help to enhance the quality of life and economic viability of our community. The Foundation was formed in 1989, when Probate Judge S. Farrell Jackson challenged our community to establish a foundation to keep significant trust funds invested locally. A small committee of caring citizens joined together to establish the Foundation to provide an entity to administer contributions from individuals, families, corporations and organizations. Our mission is to receive and administer charitable gifts that will provide longterm, continuing benefits to Fairfield County and its residents by supporting educational, scientific, cultural, social, environmental, medical and other charitable purposes. The Foundation is accredited by the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Program, demonstrating that it has met the nation’s highest philanthropic standards for operational quality, integrity and accountability. Bringing together the pieces of our community – 1 OUR MESSAGE TO YOU Staff Members Dear Valued Friend of the Foundation, The Fairfield County Foundation has helped bring together the pieces of our community for nearly 25 years – helping donors create a lasting, charitable legacy that carries on their names, their values and their priorities. The Foundation’s more than 200 individual charitable funds were created to address local causes that donors are passionate about, helping them “pay it forward” to the next generation of our community. Foundation grants support many different aspects of life in Fairfield County…from academic and children’s programs to the arts and community development. The Foundation truly brings the diverse pieces of the community together with donors to create a beautiful mosaic of support that reaches every corner of our lives. – Fairfield County Foundation 2012 Annual Report It is through your generosity that we are helping to build your legacy and bring the pieces of our community together to build an even better, brighter future. The accomplishments outlined in this report are a direct reflection of the incredible support that our community has demonstrated. We thank you. 2 Above left to right: Mindy Farrow, Office Manager Debee Monger, Administrative Assistant Amy Eyman, Executive Director Reneé Reilly, Financial Officer Amy Eyman Executive Director Andrew Ogilvie Chairman, Board of Trustees L E A D E R S H I P A N D R E S U LT S Board Members A look back at 2012 In 2012, we continued to work together to build a legacy in Fairfield County. The Council on Foundations’ National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors and their advisors. 4 A GRANT TO HELP Children Communicate Through Technology A grant from the Foundation partially funded the purchase of a Tobii CEye Eye Control Module for Forest Rose School. The $32,000 grant was from the George and Dollie L. Zimpfer Fund, which is used to benefit the residents of Fairfield County. The Tobii CEye Eye Control Module allows students who may have difficulty communicating with the use of their hands or voice to communicate through eye movement alone. “We have so many kids that do have cerebral palsy and other things that affect their motor control and their ability to use their eyes and hands together and even speech, where they aren’t able to communicate,” said Lori Mills, occupational therapist at Forest Rose School. “Other ways we currently have to help them communicate involve direct selection, where they are using their finger to touch the device, or they can use switches, which they can use any body part to activate. But some of our kids still don’t have enough control to actually be consistent or get the timing down that they need to in order to use those successfully.” To use the device, students use their eyes to control a cursor or look at an object on screen that they want to select. This method lets students choose icons or letters, which allows them to make conversation, use the internet, send email or text friends. Rachel Whitcraft, school-age speech therapist at Forest Rose, has enjoyed watching her students get excited about the Tobii. “For them to be able to think, ‘I did that with my eyes,’ and be making that connection, is neat,” she said. FA I RF I EL D C O U N TY F O U N D ATI O N — MAKING A GIFT Setting up a Fund with the Foundation Your Foundation is here to help you build your legacy. We can help you determine your charitable goals, such as deciding if you want family members involved, both now and/or in the future; considering how much involvement you want in selecting the charitable organizations that will receive grants from your fund; and thinking about how much you want to give in charitable contributions each year and how you want to give it. – Fairfield County Foundation 2012 Annual Report We make giving easy and effective, accepting a wide variety of gifts and providing donors with a number of charitable options. Our professional staff has indepth understanding of the issues, opportunities and resources that shape our community. The Foundation has several options for setting up a fund that best meets your giving goals, including the following: 6 • Donor-Advised Funds: This type of fund enables donors or their designees to recommend grants based on their personal charitable interests. • Unrestricted Funds: Unrestricted Funds are gifts to the Foundation’s unrestricted general fund. The principal and income is distributed at the Foundation’s discretion in the form of grants to 501(c) (3) organizations. A minimum gift of $5,000 is required to establish a named fund. Gifts of any amount are accepted into the general fund. • Scholarship Funds: Individuals, families, companies or organizations can establish Scholarship Funds. Once in place, a Scholarship Fund continues to grow with additional contributions from the original donors, from other contributions and through market growth. The donor of a Scholarship Fund has the ability to define the scholarship’s advisory committee and the guidelines for candidate selection, requirements and award use. • Agency Funds or Endowments: Agency Funds or Endowments can be created to perpetually support your community service agency. Agency funds hold assets for a charitable organization and distribute the principal or earned income in accordance with the agency’s specific instructions. • Designated Funds: Designated Funds are established to ensure that support will be provided to specific eligible nonprofit organizations, often organizations that donors have been involved with during their lifetimes. This is an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in the donor’s name. Making a Gift to the Foundation A variety of assets can be used to make charitable gifts, and there are many ways that you can give immediately or in the future. • Cash: Cash gifts are an easy way to make an impact in your community and allow you to give at any time. • Real and Personal Property: Gifting real and personal property often allows an individual to contribute more than they may have thought possible. • IRA/Retirement/Pension Fund Assets: Retirement assets are most often used as testamentary gifts, creating charitable funds as part of an overall estate plan. • Life Insurance: Life insurance makes it possible to make meaningful gifts to the community. • Wills and Bequeaths: Bequests offer varied ways of giving to the Foundation. Cash securities or other property may be bequeathed in one’s will. • Charitable Remainder Trusts: A Charitable Remainder Trust provides life-long income for one or several income beneficiaries, such as the donor and the donor’s spouse, and leaves the remainder interest to the Foundation or designated beneficiary. • Charitable Lead Trusts: The income generated from assets placed in a Charitable Lead Trust is paid to the Foundation for a period of years, after which the trust is terminated and the assets are returned to the donor. • Charitable Gift Annuities: The Charitable Gift Annuity can make it possible for donors to assist the community in the future while providing lifetime income for themselves. Upon the death of the donor, the remaining principal is retained by the Foundation to carry out the donor’s charitable intentions. • Transfer of a Private Foundation: This type of gift affords many advantages, including lower overhead, staff to assist with charitable goals, and a higher tax deduction for any future gifts, to name a few. But to decide to whom to give it, and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every man’s power—nor an easy matter. Hence it is that such excellence is rare, praiseworthy and noble.” Aristotle Donor Advised Funds This type of fund is one of our most appealing charitable vehicles. The Free Store is located in the Maple Street United Methodist Church, and although it is considered a mission of the Church, is not a religious organization. Run by community volunteers, the facility allows enlisted families in need of support to acquire items appropriate for their family at a stipulated quantity. The Free Store has been a staple support system in the community since its opening in 2011. After it was observed in 2012 that 1,332 families were enrolled for assistance, the need and appreciation for the Free Store was made clear. The $5,000 contribution from the Fairfield County Foundation allowed the Free Store an opportunity to improve efficiency of their operation and bring ease to organizing systems with the implementation of computer usage. As a result of the financial gift, necessities such as tables, racks, storage containers and push carts could be purchased and dwindling supplies could be replaced. Free Store director Dianne Combs expressed her gratitude for the grant, stating “The fixtures and equipment we were able to purchase with the Foundation’s assistance have enabled us to properly display the goods that we offer and better serve our customers.” The generosity of the Foundation gave the Free Store a chance to expand their mission and excel in the work they do. With the financial support of the Foundation, Aimee was able to receive a Bachelor of Science in Education, an educator license in Early Childhood Education, and a minor in Spanish. Aimee was actively involved in a number of organizations during her time on campus, including a Student Life group, the St. Thomas More Catholic University Parish, and the Bowling Green Pregnancy Center. In addition to her notable accomplishments at BGSU, Aimee was given the opportunity to complete an honors program and study the Spanish language at a university in Spain. “Through the experience I gained both in and out of the classroom, I have grown as an individual and gained the skill set necessary to be successful in the world of education,” Aimee said of her educational opportunities. “I look forward to continuing my journey and am confident in my ability to flourish in the working world.” Aimee was awarded the Dr. Martha Gesling Weber Scholarship from 2009 to 2012, as well as the Fairfield County Educational Service Superintendents’ Scholarship in 2009. Aimee graduated with an honors degree and overall grade point average of 4.0. During the summer of 2013, Aimee plans to work with The Goddard School in order to facilitate a program for elementary school kids in New Albany, Ohio. Aimee expressed her deep appreciation for the Fairfield County Foundation’s financial gift and the effect it had on her college experience. “I am eager to help my future students achieve their goals as you have supported me in mine,” she said.
