The Pomona campus – established as the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) in 1977, and renamed WesternU in 1996 – now consists of nine colleges: COMP, Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Graduate Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Medicine, Optometry, Podiatric Medicine, and Biomedical Sciences. More than 3,900 students are enrolled in the University’s 21 degree programs; WesternU’s student applicant pool exceeds 16,000 annually; and its alumni total more than 11,000. A video of the ceremony, in addition to hooding/diploma photos, graduate portraits, class photos and graduate candids, will be taken at today’s event. Family and guests may be photographed for future University publications. 6 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY 4 Devorah A. Lieberman, PhD President, University of La Verne Dr. Devorah Lieberman’s personal and professional life has been dedicated to three values and goals: educating and cultivating future leaders through higher education, promoting inclusivity among all while honoring diverse cultures, and leading by example with integrity. Lieberman has been able to cohesively blend her personal values with the mission of the University of La Verne as the 18th -and first female -- president in the institution’s 123-year history. She brings more than 30 years of higher education experience, scholarship, and leadership to the La Verne, California community. Since the beginning of her presidency, she has sought to actively contribute to the well-being of the university’s students, the scholarly activity of the faculty, and the health of the surrounding community, and continuously advocates for engagement, inclusivity and respect among all. Dr. Lieberman’s leadership philosophy, which thoroughly incorporates the mission of the University of La Verne, provides opportunities for students to achieve their personal goals, and to become successful professionals and contributing members of the global community through a student-centered, values-based, and diverse learning environment. Under her leadership, every student now participates in the La Verne Experience (LVE), a curriculum that connects theory to practice among all La Verne academic and co-curricular programs. Dr. Lieberman has promoted University-wide diversity and inclusivity efforts, including becoming a model interfaith campus, a goal that has been included in the University’s strategic vision. President Lieberman strongly supports the academic integrity and quality of La Verne’s programs and faculty, and has an unwavering commitment to creating an environment in which La Verne’s faculty achieve their greatest potential as professors and scholars. In May 2014, the Board of Trustees approved funds that will be dedicated to faculty members engaging current students in research projects, ensuring that La Verne’s professors continue professional development while continuing to deeply engage students. During her 7 ½ years (2004-2011) as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wagner College on Staten Island, New York, Lieberman led the strategic development of Civic Innovations, a multi-year effort for which the Corporation for National and Community Service provided significant funding. This campus-wide initiative served to connect students with community-engaged activities to improve the lives of others. Lieberman has a strong background in intercultural communication and diversity issues in higher education, publishing and co-authoring dozens of books and articles related to diversity, institutional transformation and current issues affecting higher education, including, “Successful Models and Practices” in the 2012 edition of “Transforming Undergraduate Education: Theory that Compels and Practices that Succeed.” Lieberman earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Humboldt State University (’75), a master’s degree in Intercultural Communication from San Diego State University (’77), and a Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication and Gerontology from the University of Florida (’84). THE GOWN — Although it may originally have been worn as protection against unheated medieval buildings, the academic gown today symbolizes the democracy of scholarship because it covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. It is usually black. THE CAP — When Roman law freed the slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of the freedom and responsibility of scholarship. The color of the tassel is black, with the exception of the doctor’s tassel, which is gold. THE HOOD — The hood is lined with the official color of the college or university. The color of the facing denotes the discipline represented by the degree. Colors associated with different degrees are: Arts, white; Business, drab; Dental Medicine, lilac; Economics, copper; Education, light blue; Engineering, orange; Fine Arts, brown; Hospital Administration, salmon; Journalism, crimson; Law, purple; Medicine, kelly green; Music, pink; Nursing, apricot; Optometry, sea foam; Pharmacy, olive; Philosophy, dark blue; Physical Therapy, sage green; Podiatric Medicine, nile green; Public Administration, peacock blue; Science, golden yellow; Social Service, citron; Theology, scarlet; and Veterinary Medicine, gray. HONORS CORDS — Honors cords are worn to signify academic achievement and/or membership in an honor society. Purple/Gold honors cords are worn by graduates in the top 3% of their class and who have been awarded University Highest Honors. Green/Gold honors cords are worn by graduates in the top 4-10% of the class who have been awarded University Honors. Graduates must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or above to qualify for University Honors or Highest Honors. Lavender/White cords indicate membership in Phi Alpha, a chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor’s Society. Purple/White cords represent membership in Rho Chi, the National Pharmacy Honor Society. Burnished Gold cords designate membership in Sigma Sigma Phi, the National Honorary Osteopathic Service Fraternity. Gold/Silver cords denote membership in Phi Zeta, the National Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine. Green/White cords represent membership in the Alpha Eta Society, the National Honor Society for the Allied Health Professions. Gold cords represent membership in Beta Sigma Kappa, an International Optometric Society. Navy Blue/Silver cords notate membership in the Lambda chapter of Pi Delta, a National Honor Society for Podiatric Medicine. Lilac cords represent membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a National Dental Honor Society. 37 THE UNIVERSITY MACE 4 The University mace is identified with the Office of the President and is carried in academic processions at commencement and convocation ceremonies. The University Marshal has the honor of serving as the macebearer at these events. Historical maces date back to the 13th century, when they were first carried as ceremonial symbols of royal authority at events attended by English kings. The university mace was first used at the charter class graduation of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) in 1982. The mace depicts the university seal, with the torch of knowledge coiled by a single serpent in the fashion of the Rod of Asclepius, set before a range of mountain peaks representing the pinnacle of academic achievement. The crowning ornament is a brass orb. Engraved upon a band encircling the mace shaft are the words: “EDUCATING HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS IN THE OSTEOPATHIC TRADITION.” The founding year of the University’s founding college is also engraved on a band in Roman numerals. The mace is permanently displayed in the President’s office. THE PRESIDENT’S MEDALLION AND COLLAR 4 The President’s medallion is in the form of the University Seal and is made of solid sterling silver with 22-karat gold overlay. The President’s Collar consists of black velvet with gold trim. It serves as a field for six medals that depict memorable milestones and significant aspects of Western University of Health Sciences, including the founding of the original college, the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP), in September 1977; the graduation of the charter class in June 1982; and the transition of COMP to Western University of Health Sciences in August 1996. Other medals on the President’s Collar include one of WesternU’s slogans, To Teach, To Heal, Together; WesternU’s core values: Caring, Compassion, Scientific Excellence; and a medal commemorating “National Influence and Leadership.” THE FLAGS 4 The 15 flags on stage represent the Western states that the institution was originally established to serve. Since then, WesternU has grown to provide health care education worldwide.
