The Complete Collection By Maarten Mulder J ermaine Jackson started singing at the young age of 10 with his brothers in the band The Jackson 5. In 1968 the brothers were discovered by Motown Records and obtained a contract. At Motown, The Jackson 5 would became one of the most successful recording groups in music history, with their first four singles reaching #1 in the U.S. charts. While Jermaine was still performing with The Jackson 5, he released his first two solo albums. In 1975, when the group decided to leave Motown Records to pursue other career opportunities at CBS records, Jermaine decided to stay and work on his solo career. For Motown, Jermaine released in total nine great solo albums up until 1983, when he went to another record company called Arista Records, where he released another four solo albums. In his career as a solo artist Jermaine released in total 13 solo albums, and scored many hit singles around the world. This book is a collection of all the music Jermaine has released as a solo artist, which includes the albums, the rare unreleased tracks and live performances, and his work for soundtracks and other artists. MAARTEN MULDER BOOKS The great career of Jermaine Jackson J ermaine Jackson, a member of the biggest family in the music industry. He started with his four brothers, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Michael in the band The Jackson 5, which became one of the most popular groups in music history. Jermaine always pursued his own ambitions in his music career, and that’s why he decided to leave The Jackson 5 and work on a solo career. Also as a solo artist Jermaine was a dynamic performer with a great voice. He made 13 solo albums, each of them with great music. Jermaine started to perform with his brothers in 1964 at the young age of 10. Together with his two older brothers Jackie and Tito, and his two younger brothers Marlon and Michael, they formed the group called The Jackson Five. Jackie and Marlon performed the background vocals and the routine dance steps, Tito played the guitar, Michael was the lead singer, and Jermaine played the bass guitar and shared often the lead vocals with Michael. Managed by their father the brothers would rehearse and perform day in day out at talent shows and night clubs. It was in 1968 when their hard work paid off, when the group was offered a contract at Motown Records. The group released their first album in December 1969 called Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. The album was preceded two months earlier by the single I Want You Back. The single reached #1 in the R&B and Pop chart rapidly and it wasn’t their last. The next three singles would reach the #1 position as well, making their fist four singles consecutive #1’s. The Jackson 5 would grow out the be a phenomenal group and obtained their place in music history. It was in 1971, after many albums and #1 singles, that Motown decided to launch solo careers of group members. Michael released his first single in October 1971, called Got To Be There. The single was accompanied by an album, with the same title, released in January 1972. Got To Be There was the first of four Michael Jackson solo albums released at Motown Records. In July of that year, the same month Michael reached the #1 position with his single Ben, Motown released the first solo album of Jermaine. The album was simply called Jermaine and it was accompanied by two singles called That’s How Love Goes and the top 10 hit Daddy’s Home. Jermaine Jackson The Complete Collection 5 December 1980 Jermaine released the follow up album of Let’s Get Serious, which just like his debut album, was called Jermaine. The next album I Like Your Style was released in September 1981 and in July 1982 Jermaine released his last album for Motown Records called Let Me Tickle Your Fancy. From the last album the title track was released as a single, which became another top 20 hit. The single reached #5 in the R&B chart and #18 in the Pop chart. In 1983 Jermaine also recorded and produced some songs for the debut album of Syreeta called The Spell, who’d previously recorded background vocals and wrote some songs for Jermaine’s album My Name Is Jermaine and Feel The Fire. The duet they recorded was Once Love Touches Your Life. Jermaine recorded also a song together with Rita Coolidge for her album Never You Let Go. The song was called We’ve Got Tonight. During the solo years at Motown, Jermaine always hoped for a reunion with his brothers. Eight years after the brothers separated their ways, a reunion became reality. The occasion was the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Motown Records, where the original Jackson 5 gave a medley performance of all their biggest hits. Not only was this Motown 25 special memorable for the reunion of The Jackson 5, it was also in this show that Michael would give a legendary performance of Billie Jean, and for the first time the world was introduced to the Moonwalk. After nine solo albums Jermaine decided to leave Motown in 1983 to continue his career at Arista Records. In April 1984 Jermaine released his first album for Arista called Dynamite (in the U.S. released with the title Jermaine 10 Jermaine Jackson The Complete Collection Jackson). The album became a big success and contains many great Pop and Soul songs. Among these songs are nice duets with artist like Whitney Houston, Pia Zadora and brother Michael. The song with Michael was called Tell Me I’m Not Dreamin’ (Too Good To Be True). It’s one of the few songs where an adult Michael and Jermaine share lead vocals on a track. To Jermaine’s disappointment the song was never released as A-side single because Epic, Michaels record company, wouldn’t allow it. They thought that having their prized superstar singing on a competing label was bad enough. However, the song was released on the B-side of the world wide hit single Do What You Do. Other hit singles from the album where Dynamite, Sweetest Sweetest and the #1 hit When The Rain Begins To Fall. Besides the solo album Jermaine also reunited with his brothers for the 1984 Victory album and tour. It was for the first time since 1975, that Jermaine released an album and went on tour with his brothers again. Because of his busy time schedule, it was only know at the last moment that Jermaine would participate on the Victory album. That’s why Jermaine’s contribution to the album was minimum. Jermaine sang some background vocals and shared lead vocals with Michael on the song Torture, which where originally planned for Jackie. For the Victory tour the brothers gave 55 sold out concerts through North America. Plans for a world tour were never realized because of the complexity of the tour and the amount of people that were involved with own interest. In 1985 a young female artist called Whitney Houston released her debut album. For this album Jermaine produced several tracks and recorded a duet called Nobody Loves Me Like You Do. Another duet with Whitney Houston was released in the same year, which was called Shock Me. The song appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Perfect with John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis. On the same album was another song of Jermaine called (Closest Thing To) Perfect, which was released as a single. The next solo album for Arista was released in February 1986 and was called Precious Moments. It was another great album filled with Pop, R&B and Soul music. The album contains great songs like I Hear Heartbeat, Voices In The Dark and another duet with Whitney Houston was recorded for this album, called If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful. The first single released from the album was the song I Think It’s Love, which was partially written by Stevie Wonder. Two other songs from the album that were released as a single were Do You Remember Me? and Words Into Action. Accompanied with the album was the Precious Moments Tour. In 1987 and 1988 Jermaine again recorded some tracks for soundtracks. The song All Revved Up appeared on the soundtrack of the Eddie Murphy movie Beverly Hills Cop II, and the song Clean Up You Act was released on the soundtrack I’m Gonna Git You Sucka. In 1989 Jermaine released another album with his brothers again, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Jackson Jermaine Jackson The Complete Collection 15 Album 03 My Name Is Jermaine 1.
