First of all, in the pages that follow, we celebrate our past with the anniversary of the Love Caps program. We also highlight the Ombudsman program’s current impact in the community and our future in Meals with the introduction of new leadership. Also on the horizon is the closing of The MIFA Store. Several years of declining sales and donations have led to this decision, and we feel it upholds our policy of responsible stewardship of donors’ dollars. So after 16 years of business in this building, the store will close its doors on October 29, 2010, to offer us a new opportunity: The space will be used by other MIFA programs, thereby strengthening our mission, unifying our organization, and streamlining our operations. Thank you for seeing us through another fiscal year and for your continued support as we face new changes and challenges. Sincerely, Margaret Craddock Executive Director Our mission: MIFA engages the community to sustain the independence of seniors, transform the lives of families in crisis, and equip teens for success. Our vision: MIFA works to unite our diverse community to address the challenges of poverty. It bears an inscription from former MIFA Executive Director Allie Prescott in gratitude for Willa’s “concern for others” and her “vision of organizing friends to help.” The poster’s rainbow brings to mind MIFA’s tradition of unifying diverse elements of the community. And Willa Lowry, founder of the Love Caps program, has done that in a unique and beautiful way. In 1931, Willa joined girls from many Memphis high schools in the afternoons to learn to knit and to socialize. “During the depression,” Mrs. Lowry recounts, “no one could afford to buy enough yarn to make a whole sweater. So we saved our money and bought one skein at a time.” During World War II, she knitted scarves and sweaters for the Red Cross. In 1989, Willa extended the same goodwill to her neighbors when she thought of the homeless people standing in soup kitchen lines in the cold and recruited a friend to help her knit caps for them. When she needed a way to distribute her caps to the poor, Willa approached MIFA, and, in 1990, the Love Caps program began. Since then, 600 knitters and crocheters have produced more than 65,000 caps and lap robes for MIFA Meals clients and others in the community. Many of those who lovingly craft these items for MIFA do more than help others—they also experience the joys of knitting while socializing, just as Mrs. Lowry did in her high school days. “I can’t imagine what Memphis would have been if there had been no MIFA,” Mrs. Lowry comments. Likewise, we can’t imagine what MIFA would have been without her. If you are interested in volunteering for the Love Caps program, contact Linda Marks at (901) 527-0208 x218 or [email protected]. Participants admire each other’s work at the annual Love Caps party. mifa.org •• (901) (901) 527-0208 527-0208 mifa.org HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2010 • 3 To serve and protect: The faithful vol “Those of us who work with seniors often find them struggling to connect their lives to the depth, the meaning, and the vitality we all seek in our lives. What aging, infirmity, and loss have taken away from them we may not replace, but through the relationships we form, we can help them coax out the hope in their struggles, the strength in their souls, and the life in their lives.” Linda Marks MIFA Inter-Faith Coordinator Former Ombudsman Volunteer Coordinator The thought of a nursing home or other senior care facility can elicit powerful emotions in those who have seen family members pass through those doors. Visions of impersonal, sterile environments prevail, and concerns over abuse and neglect rise to the surface—and all too often, the stigmatized version of a nursing home approximates the reality. MIFA Ombudsman volunteer Constance Cromwell says, “When they are relocated to nursing homes, individuals with permanent disabilities must wake, sleep, and eat on someone else’s schedule, and for many it is a journey of sadness and loneliness. In those cases, joy comes in the simplest forms: The touch of a caring hand, a personal connection, or a mid-afternoon visit with a friend.” Tennessee nursing homes rank 49th as determined by the initial Medicare Five Star rating system, and while caring, professional staff and warm, sophisticated facilities exist here, it can be difficult or impossible to distinguish among facilities. But in 154 Memphis-area long-term care facilities, volunteer Ombudsman representatives are working to serve, protect, and give voice to elderly residents. Mrs. Clanton is the Ombudsman volunteer at Signature at St. Francis and was presented the Best Practices Award at the Ombudsman appreciation dinner in April. 4 • Fall 2010 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 lunteers of MIFA’s Ombudsman program MIFA’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman program is the only one of its kind in our four-county service area. This federal program, funded by the Older Americans Act through the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, has been sponsored by MIFA for 14 years and is managed by District Ombudsman Sandy Smegelsky. Seventy-two volunteer Ombudsman representatives (VORs), trained by Volunteer Coordinator Rick Finkey, regularly visit facilities to spend time with residents, observe conditions, investigate and resolve complaints, and protect residents’ most basic rights—safety, security, comfort, and dignity. Complaints in the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction are related to quality of care, residents’ rights, financial concerns (Medicare, Medicaid), and administrative decisions (admissions, discharge). George Munchow, administrator at Applingwood Health Care in Cordova, praises the Ombudsman program’s work. He says, “Each VOR is another set of eyes. We work here day in and day out, and they sometimes see things we don’t. And the residents look forward to their visits—for some, the Ombudsman is the only friend or visitor they have.” For those residents who do have families or concerned friends, the Ombudsman also provides education, mediation, and comfort for relatives. And these volunteers are trusted resources and confidantes for residents who might be reluctant to voice concerns to facility staff. Each of the ombudsmen’s myriad functions is as critical to the protection and care of residents as the next. Munchow says, “I’ve come to appreciate the value of the Ombudsman as a bridge between the residents and the facility.” If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Ombudsman representative, contact Rick Finkey at (901) 527-0208 x230 or [email protected]. The Life Skills classes offered there teach parents about money management, responsible parenting, health and wellness, career development, and home ownership. Children’s classes foster creative expression, culinary knowledge, social skills, and self-respect. Last fiscal year, MIFA Housing Opportunities and the Life Skills Institute served a total of 449 individuals, more than 300 of whom were children. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2010 • 7 MIFA Meals welcomes new leadership Lynn Tharpe and Jonathan Jones recently joined the MIFA Meals team as volunteer coordinator and director. Lynn’s professional career began at MIFA years ago, where she was mentored by Sybil Tucker. Lynn has since worked for 19 years in human resources management, in addition to serving in volunteer services at St. Jude and at Meharry Medical School/Hubbard Hospital in Nashville. She has a B.A. in business administration and an M.A. in counseling and personnel services and is a member of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church. Lynn has two sons and two grandchildren, and she paints in her free time. Jonathan has spent the last 10 years working with seniors in living communities and providing home care. A native of East Tennessee who has lived in Memphis since 1991, Jonathan is a graduate of Millsaps College and the University of Memphis, where he taught American history while earning his graduate degree. Jonathan’s background is in management, sales, and marketing, and he recently completed a certification in geriatric care management from the University of Florida. Jonathan and his wife of 10 years, JoAnn, are proud parents of Paul, 7, and Andrew, 5. We are happy to welcome Meals Director Jonathan Jones and Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Tharpe to MIFA! 8 • Fall 2010 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 The MIFA Store says farewell Despite the best efforts of store staff and MIFA administration, The MIFA Store has been unable to overcome the blows of a crippled economy, and declining sales and donations have led to the difficult decision to close the store on October 29. We are dedicated to fiscal responsibility, and, because this operation is no longer profitable, we must turn our attention to more effective uses of our donors’ dollars. This new chapter in MIFA’s long life offers us exciting new opportunities in addition to a few challenges. One of the most important components of the store over the years has been its staff; Roosevelt Hunter, Lena McBride, Vera Wallace, and Marcell Franklin have been loyal employees, and our human resources department is committed to supporting them in their future endeavors. We are also grateful for the Meritan staff and Project WIT volunteers who have made our store run smoothly. The MIFA Store could never have existed without the generous donors who kept our racks stocked and the customers who shopped here for 16 years. Thanks in particular to corporate donors Benchmark Brands, Nike, FedEx Ground, and Fred’s; donation drop-off sites Germantown Presbyterian Church, Wesleyan Hills United Methodist Church, and Christ Baptist Church; longtime store volunteers Ruth Adams, Carol Bartlette, Lula Hinto, Margaret Laquintano, Fannie Thompson, and Carrie White; and the Memphis chapter of The Links, Inc., whose members have improved the store again and again. We continue to welcome your donations, and the store will operate normally until October 29. The final day for pick-ups of large donations is October 15. In the absence of The MIFA Store, we ask that you consider giving to MIFA’s partner clothes closets, which are listed on our website. We also recommend donating your furniture, antiques, collectibles, and art to The Salvation Army. We truly appreciate your years of support for The MIFA Store. Roosevelt Hunter has been with MIFA for 28 years. Plus-1 is made possible through the cooperation and generosity of Memphis Light, Gas and Water. Recently, MIFA received an unexpected bequest from a retired school teacher, the result of a decision she made some time before her death. Unfortunately, we could not thank her or tell her the impact of her gift. If you are considering a charitable bequest or have already named MIFA in your estate plans, please let us know. You may call Sally Heinz at (901) 529-4523. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2010 • 23 Volunteer opportunities at MIFA 910 Vance Avenue • Memphis, TN 38126 Private donations combined with funds from these partners make MIFA’s services possible.
