Been There – Done That
What does that phrase mean to you? I can tell you, after being in GWRRA more than 20 years I have
used that phrase myself but today I read CA1D’s newsletter and Cliff made a statement that has
made an impact on me:
“Even if we have traveled the road before, we will see new things and take the new memories with us.
To share our travels with others is a great gift. Let’s keep our friends and family close, remember the
good times and make new memories.”
I had to stop and think about that for a moment. To this day I talk about the first road trip I took to Wing
Ding in Billings, Montana with Chapter F. There were thirteen motorcycles and we traveled as on big
gaggle (didn’t know any better back then). That was before the GPS so months before we started
planning our trip. We would have true ride planning meetings to discuss the following:
How far is everybody comfortable traveling each day – which led us to how many days it would
take us to get to our destination (and home).
How often do you need to stop (fuel range, bladder range, stomach range, etc).
What route do we want to take – that was the really fun part of the planning.
What do we want to see along the way?
Where is everybody staying at Wing Ding?
Are you camping or staying in a hotel?
Now at that point in time I was a co-rider so to be honest I can’t remember much of the route but I can
share some of the memories from that trip. We went thru 4 Corners and everybody had their picture
taken touching all 4 states, we saw some beautiful countryside getting to Escalante, CO as well as
bear, deer, sheep and a running joke about Hay J We rode over the “spine of ???” which was a road
so narrow and slightly twisty you could look down BOTH sides and I do mean down. If you’ve traveled
some of the mountains in Colorado, you know what I’m talking about.
We went thru Yellowstone, made it up to Mount Rushmore and rode the pigtail highway. That was fun
watching all the bikes thru that. We went to some park where the elevation was over 12k feet – one
member got elevation sickness and had to head back down the mountain. (yes, I remember who).
We saw Devil’s Tower, rode over Chief Joseph’s Highway – man was that cold and so foggy we could
barely see. Coming home we went thru Glacier National Park and Idaho, Washington, Oregon, etc.
At that time ALL chapter members wore our red/blue denim vests proudly. Chapter F stood out
among the 14,000 members that were there. That trip made us a family and created friendships that
are still strong to this day.
Ok, so I’m rambling but you can see how easy it was for me to go down memory lane and relive that
experience. This happened almost 20 years ago and I can still see it as if it were yesterday. We
laughed, we joked, we had fun, we got on each other’s nerves then laughed some more.
My point is, now we have new/different faces that we haven’t traveled with in the past. Yes, I know
our chapter is aging but in my opinion that means we just don’t travel as far in a single day or we don’t
plan trips that will take us on the road for two weeks. BUT, the fun is in the planning! Getting together,

Check and Track Your GWRRA Rider Education Levels

Recently, GWRRA National has made it possible for all of us to be able to track our Rider Education Levels status,
riding courses and seminar information. This site allows you to only see your information but does not allow you
to change or add to it.
To access your information, go to the GWRRA National website (GWRRA.org), and then click on either Officers or
Programs from the blue menu bar to see a drop down menu. Then click on Rider Education. On the left side of
the Rider Education main page you will see a button for “My R.E. Information”. Click on that button to access the
log in page.
To log in use your membership number as the user name and the numbers of your home address plus your membership expiration date (MMYY) as your password. After clicking on submit, you should be able to access the information for anyone on your membership number by clicking on “View” for each person.
Please contact us if you have questions or problems accessing your information. If there are any corrections that
need to be made, please notify us via e-mail and we will forward the information on to our District Educator for
correction.

THANK YOU CALIFORNIA
Thank you California for coming out and supporting the Region F Convention. Not only did you come out and play but over
31 people volunteered to sell tickets this year. We would not be able to meet our obligations if you, California didn’t support
us. When that many people come together to sell tickets the burden is lighten on each and everyone. Again from the bottom
of our hearts we thank you for all that you do for our fabulous state. For those who didn’t have the opportunity of visiting Tucson this year at the Region F convention, you will have another opportunity to see Tucson in November when Arizona will be
having their state convention.
Tucson has many sites to see and it is a very beautiful location. Just a few things to see while visiting Tucson;

In the southeastern corner of Arizona is Tombstone, the famous Wild West town of the silver boom. The
town has preserved many of the original buildings and in fact restored them to the point that they no
longer look historical. Actors dressed in Western style walk through town and staged gunfights
breakout in the streets. Tombstone is known for its history but today it has a much more commercial
feel, rather than historical. Nonetheless, Tombstone is a fun day trip from Tucson and the surrounding
areas.
So mark your calendars for October 30, 31 and November 1st we’ll be back in Tucson for Arizona’s state
convention.
Speaking of conventions, we are now finalizing a lot of our plans for our state convention this year over Labor

As usual we had another busy month. We started the month with our first Fun Run meeting at our home. We
got a lot accomplished, so we will only need one more meeting in September to ensure we have everything in
place. If you would like to volunteer to help out, please contact me so I can get you on the list.
We do need everyone’s help in obtaining door prizes. When you go out to your favorite stores or restaurants
please take along our donation flyer and ask them to donate a prize or gift certificate.
We were happy to see everyone at our monthly chapter meeting, the after meeting ride took us to Five Guys
in Escondido. Our planning meeting for activities for the rest of year was held at the Maury’s home, we have
lots of exciting events planned, so check out the calendar and come on out and join us!
Then we were off to Tucson AZ for the Region Rally. We arrived on Thursday evening. Of course we had to
stop in Yuma AZ at Cracker Barrel for dinner then again in Tucson for dessert. We spent the weekend very busy.
Friday had us selling our raffle tickets and Friday evening we sold 50/50 and grand prize tickets for the Region.
Some of us attended classes and others were teaching classes. We were entertained with an ice cream social
and lighted bike contest. Saturday we had a chance to ride Mt. Lemmon, and it got quite chilly up on the mountain. The weather was great in the 80’s. There were some vendors and we all spent some money.
Drive In Movie Nights has started this month. Remember to check the calendar and look for emails announcing the details.
We will be ending the month with a Mystery ride planned by us which will take us up through Fallbrook, Lake
Elsinore over Ortega Highway to one of our favorite restaurants.
Next month we will be supporting CA1L and Liz’s graduation on the 6th. Ronald McDonald House on the 7th,
our chapter meeting on the 13th, CA1D on the 14th, PLP on the 20th, the Blue Knights on the 27th as well as Drive
In Movie night, a ride to the Del Mar Fair on the 28th. So come on out and join us!
We need your help in getting the trailer raffle sold! Some ideas to get these tickets sold are attending other
chapter’s monthly meetings or events, keeping some booklets on you and asking people you know or come
across when you are out and about. This raffle is for the chapter so we can have a celebration, we need everyone to help get these tickets sold by September.
We would also like to say Happy Father’s Day to everyone and hope you get a chance to celebrate with your
family.

The Education Corner
It is not the Boy Scouts, but…..
We all know the Boy Scout motto is “Be Prepared”. We are not the Scouts, but we can borrow their motto, when it
comes to our riding. There are a few things we need to do every time we go for a ride.
We and our machines need to be in top condition for the safest ride we can have. If the bike is not right or if we are not
right things can conspire to make a bad result. Even if it is just a “close call” we don’t want that.
Always ask yourself: “Do I know for sure that the tire pressure is correct?” If you are not sure of the tire pressure, it has
been to long since you checked it. Do not just look at the tires. Keep a tire gauge handy, get down and check the pressure. The contact patch of your rear tire is probably smaller than your fist. The front tire contact patch is a lot smaller.
You are getting ready to go into turns with a nine hundred pound machine with one or two people riding. This is not the
time for the tire to squirm from being hot and underinflated. Co-riders, you have the right to ask your rider if they have
checked the tires. Or learn how to do it yourself. It could be the best thing you ever learned about the bike.
Maintenance of the bike is critical in many other areas. Look for fluid leaks, warn or sloppy controls and cables. When
was the last time a qualified mechanic checked out the mechanics? Has it been tuned lately? You do not want to be 50
miles from the nearest fuel station and realize you mileage has been terrible.
After each day’s riding, clean the bugs off. After they dry, they are harder to clean off and you will keep the machine
looking good longer. Here is a great way to save some serious money and maybe save a ride. While you are cleaning
the bike make sure to clean off any bugs or dirt that has accumulated on the sliding portion of the front forks. Dirt and
dried bugs on those forks will speed up fork seal wear. When fork seals go out, you ride deteriorates quickly. Without
proper suspension dampening you can lose control of the bike. Leaking oil is a mess and can get into your breaks. Not a
good thing.
Ok so now you are committed to keeping the bike in good shape. Are you ready to ride? If you have had a stressful day,
you may need to clear your mind to focus on the very important tasks at hand. Are you ready to actively work to stay
out of trouble? You need to be able to SCAN the road ahead of you so that you can IDENTIFY hazards, PREDICT what can
happen, DECIED how to avoid the problem, and EXECUTE your survival plan. This process is continual. In fact, at any
one time, you may have several hazards identified, that all have to be dealt with. Scan your path of travel constantly.
While you are riding be vigilant to keep clear space around you, as much as possible. Know at all times how much space
there is in front, back, left and right. Maintain an escape route, for when something goes wrong. Eventually it will.
Upcoming Rider Education Activities include:
PLP and skills practice will be on Saturday June 20,. It will be held at the usual place, 8322 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Come
join us to practice your slow speed riding skills in a protected environment. The after practice ride will feature a twisties ride ending at Barrett Junction Café for lunch.

I am sure by now everyone has heard about the region F convention. Whoever did not go, you really missed
a great time. We did have a great time with all the seminars that were taken and taught by all, the door
prizes, 50/25/25's (3 of them over the 3 day's), the grand prize's won. The resort was beautiful. Yes, initially
the cost was a bit pricey, but with the $30 dollar credit back to your room, we only had to pay $89 dollars a
day which is the usual cost of any hotel stay during the conventions. The region "F" team did an outstanding
job bringing it together, and I think everyone had a great time, Thank you to all the 20 CA-1F members at the
convention. Maybe next year we can get more to go. We would like to congratulate Michelle Kelley for becoming our newest qualified UTDP trainer.

If my body were a car
If my body were a car, this is the time i would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model.
I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull but that's not the
worst of it.
My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close.
My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best
of weather.
My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.
It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently.
But here's the worst of it -- Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!
Aren't you glad you ride a Gold Wing.

Day weekend. The date: September 4th – 6th – the location: The DoubleTree Hotel in lovely downtown Bakersfield. We are excited and know this convention will be a lot of fun! Our theme this year is “The Sixties”.
How fun is that, an era most of lived through in our younger days and for many don’t even remember it. Can
you say Woodstock?? All kidding aside we are looking forward to creating a fun atmosphere for all of us to
get together again and have some fun as we always do. From the Kern County Museum, to the Crystal Palace, and The California Area Living Museum, to the Fox Theater, there are many things to do in Bakersfield,
plus riding. Yes there is riding in the surrounding areas of Bakersfield.
The lost Highway 58 – Bakersfield to San Luis Obispo! Only 90 miles one way!
Ask the locals in Bakersfield about Hwy 58 to San Luis Obispo and they'll tell you there's no such thing and then
direct you to the super-slab Hwy 46. Don't listen. Beginning about a dozen miles west of Bakersfield, Hwy 58
is a roller-coaster all the way to the coast. Giant sweepers with giddying changes in elevation run through
pastoral farmland for more than an hour. Then suddenly the road tightens down into twisting loops as you dive into canyon country. Just as suddenly, it all stops and you find you've arrived at San Luis Obispo's back
door.
Lake Isabella!
Welcome to Lake Isabella, heart of the Kern River Valley, California’s best kept secret. With many activities, including fishing, hiking, camping, windsurfing, skiing, or just relaxing, the lake itself has much to offer. Don’t miss
one of California’s largest Wild West celebrations, Whiskey Flat Days, four days of fun for the entire family. The
area is in the southern end of the Sierra Nevada range and the lake itself is located in low mountains at an elevation of approximately 2,500 feet. Also, home of the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, one of the nation’s largest trout
derbies! With the “wild & scenic” Kern River flowing into and out of Isabella Lake, there are amazing sights and
great times to be had by all.
We know that you all of choices to make as where to spend not only your time, but your money. We thank you in advance
for choosing to spend your Labor Day Holiday with us and 300+ of your closest friends.
We will have 7 Rider Ed classes, plus CPR/First aid, both full class and recertification. An ARC class (space is very limited –
only 3 spots left), a TRC class – (12 spots available) we are also having a PLP facilitator class. On the Leadership
Training side we will have 8 classes available. We’ve attached the list of classes being offered this year. Please
remember that the ARC, TRC and First Aid Classes have a cost for attending. We ask that you please sign up for the
PLP facilitator class so we know how many to plan for.
As well as all of the Educational opportunities, we are planning a great schedule. The IOY & COY selection process is on
Friday, stage interviews are set for 3:00-4:00 so you can come and cheer on your chapter’s honorees. Opening ceremonies are on Friday at 7:00p where we will announce our new District IOY & COY for 2015-2016. Saturday is chocked full
of activities. Starting early Saturday morning, the Masters Breakfast at 7:00 am, breakfast will be $15.00 (must pre-reg)
where you will have an opportunity to win a set of tires donated by Sky Med. After breakfast you will have classes, vendors, Chapter games are at 1:00p-4:00, Bingo is at 4:00p-6:30 and ice-cream is at 6:30p – winding out the day with our
Light Parade starting at 8:00p. Sunday will also have activities but are limited so you can take Sunday and just relax by

HELP WANTED!
Do you enjoy getting out and talking to people? Do you have a bit of spare time? Do you enjoy talking to others about
motorcycles and motorcycle awareness?
If so, have we got a job for you! We’re searching for a Motorist Awareness Coordinator for the Chapter.
We’re looking for a member or group of members to talk with others about motorcycling and keeping an eye out for us.
The position can be made as simple or as complex as you’d like and can be shared by several people. The desire is for
members to build a rapport with the motoring public, remind them to “Share the Road” and leave them with the feeling
that motorcyclists are real people who could be their friend, neighbor or even a relative.
GWRRA’s goal for this division of the Rider Education Program is to establish the safest motorcycling environment possible by educating motorists thus creating a reduction in the number of crashes, injuries and loss of life. All the materials
are provided by National – handouts as well as short video clips that can be easily downloaded. There are also PowerPoint seminars which can be presented by a certified Seminar Instructor.
There are many opportunities in our communities to spread the word on a simple level such as when a group of our bikes
are parked together after a ride, bike nights and community events. Also community service groups such as the Kiwanis,
Rotary and Chamber of Commerce are always looking for speakers as are driving schools and even driver’s education programs at some of our private schools. All we’re looking for is a bit of time and the willingness to enthusiastically speak to
others about our passion for riding safely.

and the riding is absolutely gorgeous in their neck of the woods. Followed by CA-1D, with celebrating our Flag on June
14th, they put on a great rally with an awesome breakfast hosted by the Elks. Last but not least in CA-2N – Fun with the
Frogs on June 27th. The frogs always put on a great rally and Angels Camp has some of the best riding in the entire
state. So mark your calendars for our June events.

planning a destination, planning a route, getting excited about our road trip, sharing our adventures with each other. We have packed our schedule with day rides and rides to other chapters to
give everybody an opportunity to ride. We have so many people with so many experiences and
ideas in our chapter I would love to hear what you enjoy doing and where you would like to go and
NOT “whatever you guys plan – I’ll go along”. Where do WE want to go as a Chapter, what do WE
want to do as a Chapter (family)?
That being said, I am sharing my 2016 Goal with Chapter F – getting back to basics and sharing experiences with each other. I would love to travel up the coast to Monterey, go to Hearst Castle, visit

Note: We must park in the indicated lot. We can not park at the Shell Station or across the
street from the restaurant. However, parking is not metered on Garnet Ave so you can try for curb
parking in front of the Broken Yolk. Go west to Kendall (right) and right on Garnet.
Driving Directions From the North
I-15 South to I-52 West (stay in far right lane)
After Meeting
Exit Balboa/Garnet Ave (1st exit on I-5 South) becomes Mission Bay Drive.
Staging Area
Right at 3rd light to Garnet Ave (get in #1 lane once you are on Garnet)
At the Second light, take the left fork to Balboa/Garnet Ave (toward Beaches)
At the third light, turn Right on Lamont Street
Left into the Alley before the entrance to the Shell Station
Right into the lot of the Broken Yolk Café.

I-5 North. Exit Mission Bay Drive/Grand Ave.
Grand Ave to Lamont Street (5th traffic light)
Turn right and see above directions.
