BARRY GI BRIDES MAGAZINE August 2010 Number Ten Miss Joan Hopgood to Captain James J Powell, junior Friday April 14th, 1944 POWELL – HOPGOOD Miss Joan Hopgood, Kingsland Crescent, Barry Dock, was married at St. Helen's Church, Barry, on Monday to Captain James J Powell, junior, eldest son of Attorney James J. Powell, Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. Miss Hopgood wore a cinnamon suit with brown accessories and a spray of blue flowers. She was given away by Mr Miles Thomas. The Bridesmaid was Miss Marjorie Green, who wore a fern green suit with black accessories and a spray of violets. Captain W J Cotter was the best man and Lieutenant C Malstrom was the groomsman. After a Wedding Breakfast at the Officers Mess, Hayes Lane, Barry a reception was held at the home of the bride. Civil Defence ambulance drivers, colleagues of Miss Hopgood, formed a guard of honour outside the church and she was presented with two horse-shoes by Mrs Farmer and Mrs Rutherford. Captain Powell, a lawyer by profession, is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He graduated from Scranton University and the Georgetown School of Law. (I wonder if Sergeant Andrews was a member of 115th Field Artillery Battalion which was raised in Tennessee?) 5 Friday December 29th, 1944 BLUST – DAVIES Holland Patent, New York State Long Island The wedding took place by special licence at the Cardiff Register Office recently between Lieutenant Charles W Blust, US Army, son of Mr and Mrs Blust, Holland Patent, New York, and Miss Doreen Davies, daughter of Mr and Mrs W T Davies, Clifton Street, Barry. & Friday February 9th, 1945 JANUARY – FOWLER The wedding took place at St. Mary's Church, Barry Dock, on Saturday between Private Thomas January, US Army son of Mr and Mrs Thomas January of Donna, Texas and Miss Ethel Hazel Fowler, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Fowler, Morel Street, Barry Dock... The best man was Corporal William Martin, US Army. [Barry Herald, February 2nd, 1945: “Corporal William Morton”] 6 Last month in Number 9 we mentioned Irene Fredholm’s husband Bill, who served in the United States Navy Armed Guard on the USS John Merrick. Mr Terry Barry Spierling passed me of this photo of a crew member on the “JM,” which he found out there on the Internet. Thanks, Terry! Friday March 16th, 1945 WERNER – SULLIVAN On March 14th, at Cardiff, Darwin, US Army, third son of Mr and Mrs M F Werner, West Orange, New Jersey to Myrtle, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J Sullivan, St. Teilo's Avenue, Buttrills Estate. 7 Friday November 3rd, 1944 WHITE – HOLLINSHEAD The wedding took place on Tuesday of last week at Merthyr Dyfan Church, Barry, between Miss Elizabeth Hollinshead, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A Hollinshead, Hinchsliff Avenue, Barry, and Private Willie A White, US Army, third son of Mr and Mrs T R White, Porterville, California...The best man was Lieutenant W Peacock, US Army. Merthyr Dyfan Church “The parish church of Merthyr Dyfan was picturesquely sited in a sheltered ravine within an unusually large churchyard containing a holy well. In the 12 th or early 13 th century a fairly sizeable church was erected, consisting of a nave and chancel and possessing a stone altar and bowl-shaped Norman font. Throughout the three centuries after its building there were only minor alterations but in the early 16 th century a crenellated tower was built on to the west end, a porch added, and the chancel arch rebuilt for a rood screen and loft...” Barry: the Centenary Book, p. 91, Mr Howard J. Thomas 8 Thursday November 24th, 1955 HOME FROM CALIFORNIA Nearly ten years ago, Mrs Elizabeth May White (formerly Hollinshead) of 74, Hinchsliff Avenue, Barry, left her family and friends to join her American husband, Mr William White, a carpenter, in California. On Wednesday week Mrs White was once again happily re-united with her relatives when the Queen Elizabeth docked in Southampton. With her on a few months’ visit to this country is her husband, now in the trucking business (transport trailers) and their two children. A welcome home party was given for the children at 2 Dyfan Avenue, the home of Mr and Mrs Edward Hollinshead, on Friday, when relatives rallied around to entertain their 20 young guests.... "It is good to be home," said Mrs White," and my husband loves it over here." E. German, Evans Street, Barry Dock, and Private Mervin Ray Hicks, US Army, fifth son of Mr and Mrs J B Hicks, Princetown, West Virginia, USA...
