BLANKETS BRING
COMFORT IN TEXAS
Vita Goodell, Executive Director of the Fort Bend Women’s
Center received a gift of little “kid quilts” and blankets from
Marlene Oldham of the New Creation Quilters of Fulshear.
The Fort Bend Women’s Center in Richmond Texas
assists survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and
their children to achieve safety and self-sufficiency.
They also provide emergency shelter to families with
children in immediate need who have no place else to
go. When the children enter the shelter they often come
with only the clothes on their back and few of their own
possessions. An Action Team was formed and they
received $250 from Thrivent Financial to be used for
sewing supplies to help meet the children’s need for
comfort. The children will now receive something of their own that will keep them warm in their strange
new housing. The women who sew are always in need of donations of cotton fabric or fleece that can be
used for the “Kid Quilts” to be presented to local charities. If you know of someone in the Fulshear/Katy
area who may have fabric they will no longer use, please call Marlene Oldham at 281-646-0748. If you
know of a person who may need the services of the Fort Bend Women’s Center, have them call the 24
hour Crisis Hotline at 281-342-HELP (4357).
ATTENTION VIETNAM VETERANS!!
In partnership with The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, the Star of Destiny
Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (Katy, Texas) commemorates
the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War by honoring our Vietnam veterans.
For historic preservation, Star of Destiny, NSDAR, is compiling personal histories of Vietnam veterans
primarily with connections to Katy, TX, but also welcomes and encourages all Vietnam veterans to
participate. These histories will be gathered via email and compiled for the year of 2015. Once compiled,
we will present complete copies to Katy libraries and other organizations. We plan to have an online copy
for all participants as well. If you are a Vietnam veteran and would like to participate, please email us at:
Email: [email protected]
Subject: V 50
Body of Email: Please send Vietnam Veteran Questionnaire
You will receive a numbered questionnaire. Please answer and return to the email address indicated. We
will acknowledge receipt of your response and will notify you when the compilation is complete. We look
forward to honoring you or the Vietnam veterans in your life!

PROTECT STORM DRAINS
Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water.
Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae
to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills.
The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants
down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of
$5,000 for each offense.
PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light
green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the
roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead
turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation
going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the
damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly.
If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like
it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod
often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment.
Water early so the sun can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material,
mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments
like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a
favorable environment.

Chocolate Raspberry Cloud
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup raspberry syrup
1 (9 ounce) package thin chocolate wafers
1/4 cup fresh raspberries (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves (optional)
1/8 cup semisweet chocolate curls (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
To Make Crust:
In a small bowl, mix together crushed cookies and melted butter. Press
mixture into a 9 inch pie pan using your hands or the back of a spoon.
Refrigerate until firm.
To Make Filling:
Whip 2 cups of cream until soft peaks form. Continue to whip while
slowly adding sugar, followed by vanilla extract. Whip until stiff, then stir
in 1/2 cup raspberry syrup.
Spread a layer of whipped cream mixture 1/2 inch deep into bottom of
pie crust. Cover with a layer of chocolate cookies. Cover with another
1/2 inch layer of whipped cream mixture, followed by more cookies. If
desired, slightly overlap the cookies, dipping them in whipped cream
mixture before placing them in pan. Continue alternating layers until
cookies are gone, and finish with a layer of whipped cream mixture.
Cover carefully. Refrigerate at least 12 hours before serving. Pie will
keep up to 3 days.
Just prior to serving, whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and cover pie with
a fresh layer. If desired, garnish with fresh raspberries, mint leaves and
chocolate curls.

Katy ISD has just been alerted by Pearson, the test contractor for STAAR
exams, of a reporting error on all 7th grade Confidential Student Reports
(CSR) that were sent home. In the STAAR Writing section, there are two
scores reported for the writing compositions. One score for the Expository
composition and one score for the Personal Narrative composition. The
scores are reversed on the report you received.
S. GARCIA PAINTING &
GENERAL REMODELING
For example, if your child’s CSR shows 10/16 for Expository and 8/16 for
Personal Narrative, your child actually scored 8/16 for Expository and 10/16
for Personal Narrative.
Interior/Exterior Painting • Tile • Siding & Hardi Plank
Roofing • Fence Replacement • Pressure Washing
Sheetrock • Carpentry & Custom Cabinets
Kitchen & Bath Complete Remodeling
This error does not impact your child’s overall writing score, Level II: Met
Satisfactory standard or Level III: Advanced standard. Accurate CSRs will be
sent home in early fall with correct composition scores and will be updated to
include the new math standards when they are set.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just
to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning
from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501
Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it
is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our
director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find
out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare
two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always
a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular
show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900
and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get
together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call
the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and
if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please
call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We
rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St.
Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our
“outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join this fun and
wonderful music ministry. Please contact Gail Shipley at 281-782-1598 or

Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website
(www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” images, which
became available on June 1st. When the online registration form has been

children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries.
Summer Reading Club For Children: “Every Hero Has a Story”
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come
to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs and
join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Library programs and
activities continue through August 1st. Children are encouraged to read
as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total
number they read or have read to them or on the total number of hours
they spend reading. For the first five books read, the child will receive a
bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil
for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20
books read, the participant’s name will also be written on an action bubble to
be displayed in that branch library. The last day to pick up rewards is August
29th. Prizes must be collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader
indicated on the registration form.
Young patrons are also invited to register to win plush book-characters that
will be given away in weekly drawings. In addition, the names of participants
will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores - donated by the
library Friends organizations - that will be awarded to several lucky readers of
20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location.
Summer Reading Club For Teens/Young Adults: “Unmask”
Exciting free activities are planned, while area teens in grades 6 and up
participate in the SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. Library
programs and activities for the Teen/Young Adult SRC continue through
August 1st. Teens are encouraged to read as many books as they can and
they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they spend reading.
For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, each teen will receive a
mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1,200 minutes) of reading,
teens will receive an SRC trophy. The names of participants who complete
20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card
- donated by the Friends of the library - that will be awarded to one lucky
reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place on August 3rd.
The last day to pick up awards is August 29th. Prizes must be collected from
the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form.
Summer Reading Club For Adults: “Escape the Ordinary”
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in
the Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional “challenges”
that can be completed individually at home. Weekly drawings for an FBCL
tote bag and a choice between vouchers for a $5 credit for fines or a $5 credit
towards a purchase at the Friends of the Library Book Store, will take place
throughout June and July at each branch library for readers who log in and
record their reading time each week. Readers who complete “challenges” will
earn additional entries into the weekly drawings. The names of participants
who complete at least 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading will be entered into
a drawing for a $25-gift card - donated by the Friends of the library - that will
be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will
take place on July 27th.

TEXAS WILDLIFE REHABILITATION
COALITION, INC. VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES FOR WILDLIFE ADVOCATES
Enjoy a rewarding volunteer experience with wildlife. Texas Wildlife
Rehabilitation Coalition, Inc. is a non-profit organization, which serves as an
emergency care and rehabilitation facility for orphaned, ill, and injured native
Texas wildlife. Volunteers are welcome in the areas of assisting in the daily
functions of the center, assisting with public education programs, and wildlife
rehabilitation. Located at 10801 Hammerly, Suite 200, the facility is open
seven days a week to help wildlife in need. TWRC has a mentor program
in place to assist volunteers with “hands on” training for those interested
in becoming permitted rehabilitators. We invite you to join our organization
in saving Texas wildlife – one animal at a time. Call the center at 713468-8972 x158 for more information or email the Volunteer Coordinator at

BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD
THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent
or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering
supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the
ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young
lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors
must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year
and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip
codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week
for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving
and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in
this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that
could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only
hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at [email protected] or
713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our
website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC
EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse
in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded
pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m
glad to see you, my friend.”
Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted
activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional
stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback
happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee
that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will
have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.
In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate
their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon
and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the
NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are
vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the
Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics.

STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all
volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless
kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in
order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve
their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from
abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to
2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate
of homeless youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides
food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of
Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive

kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that
we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish
Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using
computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or
other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community
service? Contact [email protected] or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU OR
SOMEONE YOU KNOW?
I feel like the horrific event is happening all over again. I have nightmares and
flashbacks of the event. I stay away from crowded places that remind me of the
event. I jump and feel very anxious when something happens without warning. I
have a hard time trusting or feeling close to other people. I get mad very easily. I
feel guilty because others have died and I lived. I have trouble sleeping and my
muscles are tense. There are many characteristics that may be signs of PostTraumatic Stress (PTSD). If you recognize some or all of these symptoms; you
may want to seek help. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Group meeting at Memorial

PETS
Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown
tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes
to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty
shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he
can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet
household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love
to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box
trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds! Tiny senior female short hair tuxedo cat
needs a home after her human mom recently died. Lucy is 13 years old and
still loves to play with string and cat toys. Lucy’s coat is super soft and she
likes tummy rubs, sleeping with her humans and lots of love. Lucy would do
well in a quiet household and she would love to be the only pet so she gets
lots of playtime and attention! She is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment,
litter-box trained and spayed. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
