Parade is a combination of competition, socializing and a chance to look around an area you might otherwise never have made your way to….and it is always a pleasant surprise when you get there. Parade includes the four major areas of completion – concours, autocross, technical quiz and the rally. It is also a fun volunteer opportunity which is a great way to meet people and it is a series of awards, banquets, tours and the Porsche Club of America’s annual summer Board Meeting. This year three proposals were passed at the meeting by an overwhelming majority. PCA will raise the annual dues to $46.00 a year. So, save a few dollars and renew for 3 years before the end of the year at the old $42.00 rate. Second approval was an option to purchase a headquarters building instead of continuing to rent. We hope to create a place where members could visit, perhaps some classic display cars and, of course, the club archives and office space for the Executive Director and staff. The third proposal created an Ad hoc committee to review member suspension. If anyone would like more information about the proposals and approvals, please let me know. The Grand Prix Region has some exciting events coming up over the next few months starting September 11-13th with a tour to Mammoth & the Eastern Sierra. It will be a fabulous trip that has been put together by our Tour Masters Marty and Brita Goldsmith. There is a great Porsche route planned with exciting stops along the way and dinners together on Saturday and Sunday. Look for the ad in this issue of the Circuit and call Marty. Marty and Brita also have a trip planned to the Mullen Automotive Museum Saturday August 28th. This recently opened museum has a respectable sized collection of rare custom automobiles from the 1930s and 40s by a number of French manufactures. It is a rare opportunity to see the collection as the museum is open only a few times each year. There are a couple of spots left. See the ad in this Circuit and contact Marty immediately. 6 We are planning a couple of driving events in the fall. On Monday October 4th we are having our semi-annual Day Away from Work DE and Zone 8 Autocross at Streets of Willow. This is an entry level event with paid corner workers – a definite plus in your track day knowing you don’t need to take your turn out on the track at a corner station and instead can just hang around, work on your car or kick tires with your pit neighbor. See the flyer in this issue. Hold November 20 & 21 for a joint Grand Prix and San Gabriel Valley Regions track weekend. An autocross on Sunday and a DE on Sunday, both at the Fairplex track in Pomona. You won’t want to miss this event if you have any interest in driving on a track. The last Fairplex autocross was a sold out event and was high praise for the track design. October 24th is a joint Photo Rally with the Orange Coast Region. The jaunt will start and end at Frisco’s and will take in some curvy and twisty Porsche roads heading south. OCR Tour Masters Larry Moore and Marty Goldsmith have a route planned and a good time is planned that includes prizes of cash money! Get your camera, clean your lens, call Marty and reserve a spot on what will be a very fun day. OK maybe you don’t really need the camera – but bring it along so you can take pictures of the new Porsche friends. We are starting to think about the year end holiday party and silent auction for our fundraising campaign. We have booked December 4th as the night for the party at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Put it on your calendar now and be part of the region’s annual celebration of the season which includes the installation of the Board of Directors. If you have any thoughts of wanting to participate on the Board or on one of our many committees, or if you have ideas for club – don’t be shy – give me a call – and remember my 24 hour online open door policy. I am just an email away – give me a shout. Hope to see you soon. August 2010 Skip Carter WE NEED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS Has the Grand Prix Region been busy? You betcha! Just take a look inside. The first thing you notice are the added 16 pages in this August issue. It is by far the largest Circuit ever printed. We just needed more room to catch up on coverage of recent events, and promotion of upcoming events. Even with the added pages, I still had to push Greg White's Laguna Seca ALMS coverage to the September issue. If you're not enjoying the wide variety of events GPX and the other PCA regions in Southern California offer, it's time to come out and play. You'll find ads for Tours to Mammoth, Lake Arrowhead, Mullin Museum, a Photo Rally, Flabob Airport, three Performance Driving events, our annual Holiday Party, monthly Breakfast Club meetings and monthly board meetings (everyone welcome to attend)... And that's just scratching the surface. Santa Barbara, Orange Coast, Riverside and San Diego regions all have events on our calendar and ads in this Circuit. I hope we see you at an event soon! Sleazy Dog Construction On the Cover... The Porsche Parade in St. Charles, Illinois was, well, great. A couple of thousand Porsche geeks playing "show and tell." Special thanks to Greg Phillips for giving everyone access to the thousand of photos he took. Our cover this moonth is one example from the August 2010 Parade Concours, held on the golf course just outside the back door of the Pheasant Run Resort, our headquarters for a week. Concours Chair, Dal Lee, got right on it and, after surveying several locations, the Lakewood Country Club was selected. Our long term members will remember that this is NOT the first time Lakewood has hosted us. Dal and his team did a fabulous job, as you can see from the photos, and the Lakewood Country Club could not have treated us better. It was great to have the cars back on lawn. The elegant grounds and mature trees created a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. It was also quite a treat having an indoors, sit down lunch. The food was excellent, and the white linen didn't hurt. Many thanks to both our Grand Prix Region team and Lakewood staff for helping create such a successful event. Claude Mi Ruben Archilla & Illery Gomez Another side of the coin was the participants and the cars. This year we honored the 356, and the 356 Club showed up in force. Next year (2011) will feature early 911s and 2012 (you guessed it), the 912. A team of 23 judges volunteered their time, and the day went off very smoothly. Pacific Porsche sponsored us. Parts Manager Lennie Yee and other employees were there under a tent with some great values from the parts department. Many thanks to Mike Sullivan's Pacific Porsche. Also present was Mike Newlon, a local PCA member who is writing a series of books on historic highways. His first two books, U.S. 95 and U.S. 395 were available. Sally Carr Chuck Bartron and his award winning Turbo Mike Newlon's display included his well traveled 912 and books on t historic U.S. highway You probably noticed the aerial shot of our Concours site (above). Lars Fallman, maintenance manager for nearby LA Helicopters, arranged for me to take this shot. Lars also entered his 944 Turbo in the Concours, and went home with a trophy. Let me clarify. You all know we've been running our Day Away from Work events at Streets of Willow forever and, while these had an autocross stuck in the middle or end, they are not a typical Zone 8 autocross. This event at the Pomona Fairplex was a straight autocross, single laps from beginning to end. Saturday afternoon about a dozen of us showed up at Fairplex to throw the track. Dan and Dave Hockett brought Dan's motor home, which served as our headquarters and gathering place for drivers meetings and other logistics. Dave's PA system came in very handy the next day. Saturday's setup was very smooth. We ended the day with a good meal and a tasty brew at a pub in La Verne. What brought about this "new" event for GPX? Well, about 6 months ago we were approached by John Barrone and Robert Friedman. John is the President of the San Gabriel Valley Region and Robert is their Driving Events chair. They wanted to put on an autocross and wondered if we would throw our hat in with them. They had a couple of locations in mind. By 6:00 AM Sunday morning the team was in place as cars started showing up. Suesan Way, Alfred Abken and Albert Franco handled Registration while Richard Clewett and a great group started running cars through Tech. Phil Millard drove over at 6:00 am just to work tech (Now that's a great volunteer). Robert Freidman and John Barrone staged the sponsors and helped everywhere. Nick Perdikaris and Richard Clewett got Tech Inspection up and running, Dikk & Janice Jones and Jim Alton manned the front gate throughout the day, making sure everyone signed the insurance waiver, an important and much appreciated job. It didn't take long get two thumbs up from the GPX board, so we jumped right in. Of the two sites, the old Pomona Fairgrounds (now the Pomona Fairplex) was, by far, the preferred choice. With Robert running the negotiations, we soon had our June 27th date set, and a few months to figure it out. Teams from both regions meet, worked together and produced an absolutely fabulous event. There were a few last minute "heroics." Thursday night before the event we discovered that the traffic cones we were counting on were not going to be available after all. That Friday I calling all over Southern California trying to locate several hundred 12" cones (at a decent price). After some creative purchase order, and with less than 30 minutes before the supplier closed for the weekend, Robert Friedman ran down to Santa Fe Springs to pick up the cones. I'm not sure what we would have done without those cones. 12 I especially want to thank several people from the Orange Coast Region who offered several excellent suggestions that made our track design safer and our event run smoother. OCR has developed a lot of expertise with all of their El Toro events, and it was a great help to us. While all this was going on, Carlos Chang and Marty Goldsmith were setting up and testing the Timing system. We had never timed 100+ cars before, and were a little nervous. After all was said and done on Sunday afternoon, I can report that it ran, well, like clockwork (Good work guys!). Nick Perdikaris working as starter in front of the timing tent Lenny & Beverly Yee brought a nice selection of merchandise from Pacific Porsche's parts department Alfred Abken, Suesan Way and Albert Franco handled event day registration Carlos Chang, Marty Goldsmith & Janice Witteried ran the timing tent to perfection Marty Goldsmith working track setup Saturday afternoon Peter Louie's 914 gets a thorough looking over at Tech Inspection Bobby Griffin gave the flag demonstration. Skip Carter & Nick Perdikaris managed student/instructor pairings Loren Begg's 997 GT3 RSR was something to watch on an autocross course. The 911 Design rig is in the background. This is the second event that Janice has jumped in to interface between Timing and Scoring. We've ordered a GPX Timing Team name badge for her, and are hoping she will make that job a permanent one. With over 100 registered, we knew it was important to keep things moving smoothly. Paid corner workers simplified things a lot. Thanks to Bobby Griffin and her team! We had a huge piece of asphalt to work with. Our course was long by autocross standards. The first layout was 1.8 miles — too long. We cut it to 1.5 miles, and it was still long. Any of you who have been around PCA for a while know just how important volunteers are. Without them, literally, we could not do these events. Last but not least, I want to thank the 35+ instructors who shared their time and their passenger seats with the novices. It's all about learning how to be comfortable and get more enjoyment out of your Porsche. A lot of people went home with that in their pockets. See you October 4 for our Day Away from Work DE/Autocross at Streets of Willow or back in Pomona November. Top Time of Day Michael Oest 2007 997 GT3 Orange Coast Region 2nd TTOD was Steve Abbott in a 1999 Corvette (OK, so he had to put a Porsche badge on the nose - just kidding). His 113.636 was blazingly fast. He documented a lap with in car video. Take a look as this YouTube link — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idp4T4fFtQU. Our 3rd TTOD went to 911 Design owner and event sponsor, Loren Beggs. His 997 GT3 RSR is hardly an autocross car. I was truly amazed at how he was able to throw that car around some pretty tight autocross corners. When was the last time you saw a GT3 RSR autocross? Thanks to Mike Mulligan and Robert Friedman for the track design. I want to thank our event sponsors too. Pacific Porsche was well represented by Lennie Yee and his wife, Beverly. 911 Design's Loren Beggs brought his rig and supplied water and ice for us, and L.A. Dismantlers was there with a tent full of used Porsche parts. We may not have made a lot of money (cones aren't cheap), but we didn't lose money and we had a ball. We're already working on our next event at Fairplex, a 2-day event on November 20-21. Saturday will be an autocross very similar to this one. Sunday, however, will be a DE using the longer course that goes under the historic bridge. That bridge and the track after it are a very nice road course section. 14 The DE and Autocross will be entry level events. We're just working out the budget right now and hope to have a flyer out by time this Circuit hits the streets. 2nd Top Time of Day Steve Abbott 1999 Corvette Orange Coast Region 3rd Top Time of Day If you have always driven there without leaving Highway 395, you have missed a lot of special places! This tour will leave Long Beach and follow freeways through the Cajon Pass. and up 395, pausing at Kramer's Junction for refreshment. The first sightseeing stop will be the old mining town of Randsberg. After that we cross a patch of desert to visit Red Rock Canyon State Park. Passing by some of the volcanic country near Little Lake, we press on to lunch at Olancha. We may detour to Keeler, a picturesque mining community on our way to Lone Pine and Manzanar. From there we will enjoy the spectacular Owens Valley scenery on our way to Mammoth Lakes. This famous mountain resort town has all the amenities. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Quality Inn, right on Main Street in the middle of town. We will have group dinners (locations TBD) on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Sunday, we have planned a tour to include the famous Mono Lake, a look at Tioga Pass, and perhaps a side trip to the preserved ghost town of Bodie. Monday options: You can leave early or stay for the Mammoth Mountain Gondola to the top of the peak for a spectacular view over the Minarets and San Joaquin River Canyon or go to Mammoth Crest for a flat, but spectacular walk along the ridge, and continue to Red's Meadow and the Devil's Postpile. You cannot run out of things to do at Mammoth! To participate, do two things. First call the Quality Inn (760) 934-5114 and ask for the GPX Porsche Club special rate $99 per night. Then let Marty Goldsmith know that you have signed up (562) 494-6350 or [email protected] so he can keep you up to date on details. This year's Parade was held in St. Charles, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. It was far enough away from Chicago that you knew you weren't in the suburbs. Located on the Fox River, St. Charles is a small, picturesque, mid-western town with all the charm that that implies. The Pheasant Run Resort hosted us. This well established resort knows how to treat car people, world reknown for things like the Mecum auction. Although people who had never experienced well water before were not delighted with the sulfur content of the resort's water, you would have to look hard to find something else to be unhappy about. The weather, which could have been hot, humid and rainy (as it was the week before and the week after our event), was as perfect as it could be. In. This was a very large, well-lit and CARPETED convention room, air conditioned to boot. We had almost 75 cars in there at the peak. More than one family spent three very long days (beyond midnight sometimes) getting ready for the Concours. That's dedication! The first "official" thing you do after checking into the hotel and unloading your car is Parade Check-In. This involves going to a series of tables in a very large room, making sure you have the materials you need for the various events throughout the week. The first official event is the Welcome Party. It's a wonderful way to start the week, and great effort goes into making it a memorable event. Right next door to Pheasant Run is the Du Page County Airport. An extremely large hanger was cleared out for us. In front of the hanger were a half dozen significant airplaces with historic Porsches scattered amongst them (see photos). Near the end of our excellent meal, the planes, one by one, took off and buzzed the hanger. What fun! After dinner a "Blues Brothers" band delighted the crowd, and more than a few couples turned it into a lively hanger full of dancers. Oh yes, and they raffled off a 2011 Cayenne S. The Gimmick Rally took us through beautiful countryside, corn fields, small towns, historic windmills (one you could actually go inside of) and more corn fields, river valleys and, more corn fields. We had the Rally Banquet at a close by, very beautiful Arboretum. The large tents were comfortable and the food was fine. Having to traverse the 40 feet between the food tent and the seating tent was a little difficult, a mid-western thunderstorm being the casue. The ground became a little too soft for those wearing any kind of a tall heeled shoe. The Concours was on a golf course right outside the resort's back door. I love seeing all those beautiful cars spread out on lawns with large shade trees and a creek. There are several sets of tires donated as door prizes, almost every banquet giving away at least one set. There were many very nice prizes. Mark and Tina Trewartha, friends from the Orange Coast Region who own Autobahn Adventures, donated three $3,000 discount coupons for their Germany trips. Unfortunately, Suesan and I did not win any of these either (do you see a pattern developing?). Many tours were available, including one to and on the Road America track, an Architectural Tour of Frank Lloyd Wright work and others. The best door prize of all is reserved for the final banquet, the Victory Banquet. This is an all expense paid trip to two to Germany and the Porsche factory. The event was held at Buttonwillow Race Park near Bakersfield. The weather was very comfortable and, several times, I just needed to stop and look at how beautiful the cloud formations were over the Temblor mountain range to the west. In addition to the Club Race, Drivers Ed and Time Trial groups also ran. While the Time Trial requires minimum driver qualifications, the Drivers Ed (DE) provides a great opportunity for "first timers" as well as experienced drivers to develop their driving skills. For several, this was their first performance driving event. In addition to a mandatory "Ground School" on Friday afternoon, novices are assigned an instructor to work with them throughout the weekend. For many people, driving a Porsche can be an intimidating experience. Others just want an opportunity to "see what it can do." For both, we create a safe environment to learn about car control and to get more comfortable with your Porsche. I can't count the number of people who, after one or more performance driving events, have commented about how much safer they feel driving on the street, how much more they "see" while driving, how confident and better equipped they are to handle a driving emergency, and how much more relaxed and comfortable they are on the street. That, together with our amazing safety record, makes it very easy for us to keep producing these events. Many, many thanks to our event sponsor, Circle Porsche in Long Beach. I can't tell you how important it is to let our sponsors know how much we appreciate their support and, the best way we can show our appreciation is for YOU to use their services. Buttonwillow has great facilities. The BEST snack bar I've seen at a track, air conditioning, plenty of shade and meeting rooms, a gift shop, tire services, ice, water and more. And, in case I didn't mention it, an extremely fun race track. We'll be back again next year, so watch The Circuit calendar for this and many other fun events. As usual, your board and chairs are working hard to create a variety of fun and interesting events for all of us. Whether you take advantage of it or not is up to you. Pop rivets came out, Suesan located a fiberglass repair kit about 20 miles away, Arturo Chaparro picked it up, Michael Dolphin and several others lent a hand, Allan Rosenberg knew how to work fiberglass and, by Sunday morning Leamon was back on the track. Not only did he get the fender fixed, but as people drifted by, another problem with a nagging oil reservoir problem was analyzed and a simple repair solved the problem. This is the kind of camaraderie I've come to expect at see at PCA events, and I've rarely been disappointed. GPX pits did include some camping, and lots of good food (too bad I don't have pictures from Friday & Saturday BBQs 25 The Circuit Featured Advertiser: Aase Motors Brita & Marty Goldsmith by Marty Goldsmith This month my job is pretty easy. Having received a very nice letter from GPX member Karen Lewis about a recent experience with one of our advertisers, Jeff Erickson's Aase Motors, all I needed to do was print it. By the way, Karen & Bob Lewis advertise their own business in the Circuit, Long Beach Embroidery. PS: On any given weekend you'll find Bob and Karen volunteering at local (and not so local) race tracks. They love corner working - being in the middle of the action. LONG BEACH EMBROIDERY 3138 Heather Road, Long Beach, CA 90808 (562) 756-8520 July 13, 2010 Mr. Jeff Erickson AASE MOTORS 1104 East Elm Avenue Fullerton, CA 92831 Re: Maintenance performed on our 996 Dear Jeff: We just wanted to send you a note to thank you very much for the wonderful experience we had this morning, when we came in to get the oil changed on our “baby”, the 2002 996 Cabriolet (Meridian exterior (4 gals silver paint/1 gal red) with Cinnamon interior). Yes, this Porsche was my 50th birthday present and it “already” has 18,000 miles on it! Anyway, we were the high bidder for one of the oil change certificates you generously donated to the PCA GPX silent auction for their Holiday Party, with proceeds benefitting their charity of last year, ASUDEC. Your generosity is greatly appreciated as we will continue to send money at year’s end to both of our charities for the CY 2010: ASUDEC & the Children's Dental Clinic at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Thank you also for the courtesy and graciousness of Allan, your efficient and knowledgeable technician, for making me feel welcome and I must tell you that many times when “women” go to automotive repair shops, we feel like we are treated as if we know nothing about our automobiles; whereas, my experience this morning was anything but that. Not only did he just change the oil, but, in response to my inquiries, he checked out the brakes (they were fine) and did a little troubleshooting on the back-up lights that we have had trouble with for some time. Even though the lights were not fixed, we did eliminate the possibility of both bulbs being burned out as being the culprit. We still go back to the dealership who changed out our engine more than five years ago (that is another story) and the back-up lights nonfunctioning remains elusive to us. It was interesting to me, as a metal stamping representative for the past 30 years, to see Allan continually cleaning up as he went along this am. That explains why your shop looked so clean and tidy. We can all take a lesson from him. We will certainly recommend your shop to all of our friends and hope to see you both at an upcoming Grand Prix Region breakfast one of the next “first Saturday of the month”. Come hungry: Frisco’s (Long Beach) make up a wonderful array of breakfast items for us. Good food/good friends/lots of Porsches! Sincerely, Karen Lewis 26 August 2010 27 Breakfast Club Update — June 5 by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter The one thing that greeted everyone attending the Porsche Club of America, Grand Prix Region’s June Breakfast Club Meeting was that anomaly known as June Gloom. The overall lack of sunshine still resulted in a huge membership turnout at Frisco’s Diner in Long Beach. Of those in attendance, two of our more celebrated and decorated couples were there: Jack and Virginia Case, charter members of PCA (1955), and John and Patty Reilly who, as of this month, have amassed a whopping total of 44 years of membership. If my math serves me correctly, that totals 99 years of Porsche Club of America membership. That, my friends, truly deserves our acknowledgment. Congratulations to both of our esteemed couples. At the meeting, our President, Suesan Way, presented David Carlson of the Orange Coast Region, and Steve Firshein of the Grand Prix Region, their RS Spyder Watch packages. The packages were donated by Pacific Porshce for our Fundraising Raffle. They included a Porsche RS Spyder watch, two RS Spyder models and a limited editon RS Spyder book. Monies raised will go to our two charities, ASUDEC (Africa's Sustianable Development Council) and Long Beach's Children's Dental Health Clinic. The drawing was held at our recent Lakewood Country Club Concours. The prize packages were truly magnificent. Besides the great food and service always provided by Frisco's, we heard from speakers on subjects from the Orange Coast Region Concours, the Glockler Porsche (a pre-cursor of the 550 Spyder), a Swiss Coach built Beutler Porsche Convertible, the upcoming Del Mar Concours (September), and the July 27th Fairplex Autocross produced by both GPX and San Gabriel Valley Regions. Marty Goldsmith also spoke about the upcoming July 11th Photo Rally with GPX and OCR, and Suesan spoke about the St. Charles, Il Porsche Parade and its surrounding events. Overall, the meeting was very informative. Among those in attendance at the June Breakfast Club Meeting were: Art Arredondo, Ralph Arredondo, John Barrone, Ernie Becker, Milt Becker, Efren Bernel, Marc Bixen, Joe Bryant & Sandi Richlin, David Carlson & Zelika Bosnok, Skip Carter, Arturo Chaparro, Russ Christensen, Richard Clewett, Yaw Davis, Norma Ann Dawson, Dan Dayton, Mark Dodson, Jeff Edmonson & Sue Thieman, Lars Fallman, Steve Firshein, Julie Fogg, Albert Franco, Marty Friedman, Scott Gambrell, Freddy Garcia, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Jeff Haas, Hazel Hofsess, George Jackson, Marv Janquart, Bruce Jephcott, Tommy Johnson, Mike & Karla Jones, Alvin Jones, De Jur, Dick Krumwied, Stephen Krupnick, Ron & Karen La Forest, Dal & Spencer Lee, Jim Lenahan, Bob & Karen Lewis, David Lin, Roy Lock, Roger Lubeck, Derrick Maglonzo, Chet Malveaux, Phil Millard, Claude Mitchell, David Moard, George & Tanner Nodarse, Linda Nolasco, Steve Orr, Marty Petcoff, Herb Reynolds, Martin Rodriguez, Allan Rosenberg, Greg Schill, Leamon Stansell, Rick Tuey, Bob Turner, Ron Walecki, Chuck Weaver, Davis Weiss, Rob Wessels, Greg White and Earl Yessmann. Considering that it was the day before the Fourth of July, it was seemingly unheard of and never before seen weather for Southern California. But it was not enough to deter our members, while driving the finest automobile in the world: Porsche. July is generally tough to predict the turnout. Generally, a lot of our members get out of town on vacations and other assorted outings. Several were at the Porsche Parade in Illinois, and others were probably mired in preparations for the holiday the following day. However, we still had a large turnout at Frisco’s Restaurant in the City of Long Beach. During the meeting, several members and vendors addressed the group. Among them was Vice-President, Rick Mills (serving as moderator in Suesan Way’s absence). Rick brought Alan Balyis to speak to our group. Alan is the VP of Sales and Marketing for Fiske Wheels. Marty Goldsmith spoke about upcoming tours, trips and events. Membership Chair Jimmie Mitchell and our Fundraising Chair, Karen Lewis also addressed the croud. Karen is also one of our advertisers, owning Long Beach Embroidery with her husband, Bob. Our July gathering was pretty informal. We had a fine breakfast, listened to some general announcements, then out into the parking lot to kick tires and listen to an assortment of member stories. On a different note, one of our award winning members, Richard Elliott, has moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Good luck to you Richard. Know that we really enjoyed having you as a member of the Grand Prix Region. You are truly one of the nice guys and will be missed. Try and plan your trips to So Cal so that it includes our breakfast club. We would love to see you. Attending July Breakfast were Norm Abell, Bob Baddy, John Barrone, Milt Becker, Gary Bengston, Carl Bloom, Joe Bryant, Angelique Chacon, Ed Cobos, Don Dagert, Yaw Davis, Art Day, Patrick Devine, Mark Dodson, Lars Fallman, Steve Firshein, Albert Franco, Barbara Gillam, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Gentry Humphrey, George Jackson, Bruce Jephcott, Patricia Geary Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Vincent Parker, Victor Lai, Bob & Karen Lewis, Steve Marino, Mike Martin, Michael McGuffen, Phil Millard, Tony Mistretta, Jimmie Mitchell, Susan Moard, Christian Nichols, Mike & Linda Nolasco, David Palao, Marty Petcoff, Tom Potase, Herb Reynolds, Sandi Richlin, Allan Rosenberg, Ron Shanon, Dan Stern, Ron Walecki, Charles Weaver, David Weiss, Rod Williams and Earl Yessman. Also, we are still missing the current e-mail addresses of a significant number of our members. So check your information on the PCA National Website, and if it needs to be updated, please do so. Beyond that, we’ll see you at the next Breakfast Club Meeting. No matter how you look at it, each month when we decend on Friscos, it's Porsche galore. The photos above show Frisco's from the front, street side, left side, right side and back. And those of us who couldn't park this close were scattered close by. Despite my fairly decent research skills, until recently, I wasn’t able to uncover anything definitive. Recently I ran across articles about ASUDEC and Children’s Dental Health Clinic, the two organizations GPX sponsors that, speak directly to that point. We hope this article will give you a good idea of just how far the money we donate goes toward helping others less fortunate. According to its website, “the Children's Dental Health Clinic provides multi-specialty dental services and education for children of low-income families of the Greater Long Beach Area, including children with special needs, or who are medically compromised. The Clinic accept[s] Denti-Cal, Public Private Partnership (PPP), Expanded Access to Primary Care (EAPC), and other government assisted dental insurance. For low-income families without insurance, we have a sliding fee scale payment program.” The Clinic is “an all inclusive dental home that provides diagnoses aided by digital imaging, fluoride treatment, restoration of teeth (fillings, root canals and crowns), as well as preventive dentistry and oral hygiene education. It provides specialized treatment including periodontia, orthodontia, endodontia, oral/maxillo-facial surgery and treatment under oral or IV Sedation in the Specialty Care Area. . . . As one of the only hospital based dental clinics in The Greater Long Beach Area, the Clinic also provides treatment under general anesthesia in the hospital's operating rooms, where dentists have privileges.” Children’s Dental Health Clinic’s current wish list includes 2 sterilizers at $4,000 each, a dental operatory/dental chair unit at a cost of $20,000, 2 digital x-ray sensors at a cost of $8,120 each, 6 dental handpieces at $850 each, one electronic apex locators costing $975, a System B Endodontic system at a cost of $860, one electric endodontic handpiece at a cost of $1,725, a dental chair suction vacuum for the Avalon Clinic costing $4,000, one compressor at a cost of $3,500, a mobile clinic custom garage at a cost of $15,000, one positive pressure oxygen mask costing $400, 3 light curing unit costing $600 each, one operating room x-ray equipment cart at a cost of $2,400, one pulse oximeter at a cost of $4,800, Clinical staff gowns at a cost of $1,200 a 100, and one week of dental supplies at a cost of $2,000. If any of you were inclined to fund any one of these projects yourself, I can assure you it would be most appreciated and put to good use. Grand Prix Region plans to organize a visit for our members to the clinic sometime soon but, until then, they welcome anyone who would like to stop by and see what they do. August 2010 Book Reviews for Porschephiles by Bruce Herrington, Riverside Region US Route 99: Travel America's "Pacific Highway" by Michael Newlon, published by Outskirts Press Inc, Denver, CO Third in a series, US Route 99 is even more profusely illustrated than the previous books. In fact, the story of US 99 is largely told through the enhanced captions to the pictures presented in the book. These pictures are very appropriate to the visual treats the author was able to find along his route. Unlike the Interstates which were designed to promote long distance travel, the US routes were designed to bring commerce to the towns (large and small) of America. The US routes used the 'Main Drag' of the towns on the route, without the bypasses and limited access typical of the modern interstates. The ability to see the various goings-on in the towns along the route (including some of Greater Los Angeles), adds to the charm of blue route travel and, by reflection, to the charm of this book. The author displays considerable patience and perseverance in researching the history of the road, its alignment, and its associated landmarks (for the benefit of the rest of us too preoccupied with the modern world to search out the simpler life and times of the good 'ol days). Like his previous books (US Route 395 and US Route 95), this book is dedicated to an individual who had a significant impact on the US highway system when it was an unheralded forerunner to the Interstate System we know today. The author tells how the support of and opposition to the US highway system made for some strange bedfellows. Mr. Thomas H. MacDonald, to whom US Route 99 is dedicated, served as Chief of the Federal Bureau of Public Roads for 34 years, an accomplishment of longevity which is interesting reading in its own right. usurped by the Interstate Highway System we now know and love(?). Unique amongst travel books, Mike Newlon's books always have Porsche content. He always works in commentary specific to matters of his vehicle, a Porsche 912. These discussions are above and beyond his discussions of the scenery, the history of the highway system, the historic markers along the way, and the specific history of the road in question. Like all long distance travelers, the author of this book encounters a few trials and tribulations with his vehicle. As part of the travel, they (and the people he got to meet because of them), are duly reported in this travelogue. A comprehensive listing is included, of informational and Porsche service resources along the route. US Route 99, with 87 profusely illustrated 8-1/2x11” pages, may be obtained for $24.95 at your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or directly from the author at http://www.highwaytripbooks.com. Ed: Mike Newlon is a member of the Riverside Region of PCA US Route 99 logs its travels from the southern terminus at Calexico, California to the Canadian Border at Blaine, Washington, on sections of a 1959 highway map. August 2010 Board Meeting Notes — June 5 Marty Goldsmith, Secretary President Suesan Way called the meeting to order at Frisco's at 1045. Other board members present were Marty Goldsmith, Greg Schill, Hazel Hofsess, Jimmie Mitchell and Skip Carter. Members present were Frank Medrano, Carlos chang, Jack and Ginny Case, Norma Dawson, John and Patty Reilly, Albert Franco, and De Jur Jones. Discussion started with a review of preparations for the July Photo rallye. Then it was reported that the financials for Buttonwillow event are not final, but show as close to breakeven. The event would have been less successful without the Southern California support. The event has a tentative schedule for next year of the second week of March. Suesan reports that we have over 40 entries for Pomona, so success for that event seems assured. There was discussion of the financial and operating arrangements for that event. Skip brought up the issue of buying Chatterbox student/ instructor intercom systems for use in our driving events. There was generally favorable response, but the issue of sell or rent was not resolved. It was moved and passed that board members and chairpersons be allowed to spend up to $100 a month without priori board approval. It was also moved and passed that a budget be submitted and approved by the board for all events requiring an outlay of funds. Greg Schill stated that our finances are in order, and he is working up the final numbers for the concours. George, the Frisco's manager proposed the notion of having regular evening car shows at Friscos. There was brief discussion of the possible nature of such events. Jimmie spoke of having ads on our website. Skip suggested that simply having a link to a sponsor page that would have banner ads with links to advertiser's websites might work. There was a discussion of the desirability of letting vendors other than our advertisers make presentations at our meetings. Consensus was that permission should be evaluated on a case by case basis, and denied if the party was a competitor to any of our advertisers or supporters. The meeting was adjourned at 1240. Starting at the master cylinder, the brake fluid is pushed through the brake lines under high pressure to the brake caliper at each wheel of the car. In the United States, brake fluid is classified under a Department of Transportation (DOT) number, the most common being DOT 3 and DOT 4, which are glycol-ether based and are water soluble. DOT 5 is a silicone (synthetic) based fluid that should not be used in cars with anti-lock brakes (ABS). Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture (water) from the air in the atmosphere. Moisture enters the brake fluid through various ways, the main path being through the vent in the brake system fluid reservoir. Moisture can also enter through a process known as diffusion, where air molecules penetrate through rubber seals and rubber brake hoses. The process of water contamination starts when the brake fluid can is opened, and it never stops. Brake fluid is categorized as either dry or wet. The fluid is classified dry when there is no moisture content (new fluid) and wet at the point when moisture content can be measured. As the moisture content in the brake fluid goes up its boiling point drops significantly (water boils at 212 degrees F). When the brake fluid temperature increases (at the brake caliper) the possibility of boiling the fluid becomes a reality and the result is known as brake fade (the brake pedal becomes spongy and stopping distance is increased dramatically). This is a huge problem for a Porsche owner, as stopping is as critical to performance as acceleration. Brake system fade is also possible through for other mechanical reasons, but all are related to heat. Moisture also leads to corrosion because of the oxygen present in water. This corrosion damage can lead to substantial costs considering the expensive components involved. Contamination in the brake fluid also has a tendency to break down the interior rubber of the brake pressure hoses, not to mention the internal rubber sealing rings in the various components (brake master cylinder, calipers and the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) components). Under normal operation, brake pressure hoses constantly expand and contract and, over time, these hoses deteriorate and should be inspected when your car is serviced. Brake fluid should 42 be changed or flushed at least annually to get the moisture and contaminates out of the system. When brake fluid has been in service for one year, there will be approximately 1% contamination from water. The automotive brake system is sealed, so it should never need topping off unless your brake pads are excessively worn or in the case of a leak. Since DOT 3 & 4 brake fluids are glycol-ether based, they are very flammable and will also damage paint on contact. DOT 5 will not damage paint, but is not recommended in motorsports applications due to its tendency to carry air. Please note: We do not recommend DOT 5 (Synthetic) brake fluid due to the potential for suspension of air bubbles. ATE SL is a standard DOT 4 brake fluid which is very good for most any road driven car. ATE TYP200 and ATE Super Blue are each the same, the only difference is that one is gold and one is blue (some people like to alternate colors when flushing the system. This way they can see when all the "old" color has been replaced). These are great for club autocross and amateur track events. Another option for track car brake fluid is the Motul RBF600. In our opinion, the best brake fluid for motorsport (professional or otherwise) is Castrol SRF but it is very costly. For 1990 and later Porsches, we recommend ATE SL6, which is a low viscosity brake fluid designed more for the ABS braking and traction control systems that have very small and intricate orifices. Check the wet and dry boiling points on the brake fluid can to get a good idea of the quality in regards to temperature. Brake fluid is wet basically from when the can is opened. It is a good practice to replace your brake fluid once a year. Ed: Tony Callas is one of those rare breed who was "born" into his career. Peter Vasquez 310-386-7931 [email protected] August 2010 Next Month — Greg White's coverage of the Laguna Seca ALMS race MINUTES OF SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD JUNE 5, 2010 fees, $425; CPA fees for analysis and return prep for four years, $2150; total $7840. Background: On May 26, 2010, President Way notified all board members by e-mail that Treasurer Schill had discovered that GPX had not filed income tax returns (Federal or State) for years 2006 onward. We also were found not to have Federal status as a non-profit corporation. He had consulted with competent legal and accounting professionals, and with appropriate staff at PCA headquarters. They all advised to proceed to remedy these omissions as quickly as possible. Therefore President Way called for a special meeting of the Board to be held after the regular Board meeting on June 5, 2010. Meanwhile Treasurer Schill would develop further information concerning actions to be taken, as well as developing estimates of our potential liabilities and costs for professional services. Treasurer Schill then presented a draft resolution which outlined the present situation and which directed and authorized the actions he would need to take to resolve our problems. The special meeting convened at 1200 at the home of Secretary Goldsmith. Present were President Way, Secretary Goldsmith, Treasurer Schill, and Directors Hofsess, Mitchell and Carter. Vice-president Mills was aware of the meeting and its purpose but could not be present. As written, the resolution offered by the Treasurer could not be passed, so appropriate modifications were made. The Board then decided to vote on the resolution, with the understanding that if this meeting was found to be improperly held, another meeting, properly configured, would be necessary to pass binding action. If this meeting is found to comply with laws and the by-laws, then the resolution would stand. Treasurer Schill outlined the situation, and provided two items for consideration. The first was an estimate of our financial exposure. The estimates can be summarized as follows: Federal tax, interest, and penalties, $5000; State tax, penalty, late fees, $265; attorney At this point, Director Carter expressed an opinion that the meeting we were having was improperly called, no notice having been given to the general membership, and thus was illegal. After discussion, it was realized that we had with us neither a copy of State law nor our own by-laws, and a determination could not be made at that time. Director Carter withdrew from the meeting, having an appointment at the Fairplex concerning our forthcoming Autocross. The meeting adjourned at 1330. (continued on page 46) 45 The Circuit (continued from page 45) On Monday, June 7 Treasurer Schill provided the attorney with our by-laws, and the attorney gave him a copy of the pertinent State law. The attorney concluded that the meeting as held complied with both. Therefore the resolution as passed is appropriate. The resolution is as follows: RESOLUTION OF THE GRAND PRIX REGION OF THE PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA The undersigned, being directors of the above named corporation, and pursuant to Section 7211 (b) of the California Corporations Code and the bylaws of this corporation, do hereby vote for, consent to and authorize the adoption of the following resolutions, and any and all actions contemplated thereby, it being understood that the execution of this consent is the outcome a special meeting of the board of directors held on June 5, 2010. UNFILED FEDERAL & CALIFORNIA INCOME TAX RETURNS WHEREAS, the newly elected Treasurer of the corporation, GREGORY SCHILL, who took office January 1, 2010 has determined that the corporation (i) never applied to become a tax exempt corporation under the Internal Revenue Code; (ii) has had a number of years in which it realized a taxable profit on its operations; and (iii) has had a number of years in which its gross receipts exceeded the threshold for filing a California non profit tax return; and WHEREAS, the Treasurer has investigated how to proceed in such a case and has received recommendations from an accountant and an attorney as well as the Accounting Manager at Porsche Club of America all of whom recommended filing all unfiled federal and California income tax returns as soon as possible; and WHEREAS, the failure to file such income tax returns ordinarily incurs penalties and interest on the income taxes due; and WHEREAS, the Treasurer has engaged on behalf of the corporation SUE RAZZETO, CPA to calculated the overdue income taxes and potential penalties and interest due thereon; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interest of the corporation and its members to file all overdue income tax returns and pay all overdue income taxes, penalties and interest; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interest of the corporation and its members to file a federal application for tax exempt status; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interests of the corporation and its members to timely file all required income tax returns and to pay all taxes due in a timely manner. THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the Treasurer's actions in investigating these matters, his attempts to resolve them and his engagement of outside professionals are hereby ratified and approved and the corporation will pay all amounts billed to the corporation by such outside professionals or shall reimburse the Treasurer for any amounts he incurs by reason of his investigation of these matters and attempts to resolve them; and RESOLVED FURTHER, that as soon as possible the Treasurer 46 shall prepare and file all unfiled federal and California income tax returns and the corporation shall pay all unpaid income taxes and any penalties and interest that may be imposed by the taxing authorities; and RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Treasurer is hereby authorized to engaged the services of SUE RAZZETO, CPA on behalf of the corporation and at the corporation's cost to prepare and file such unfiled income tax returns and to represent the corporation before the taxing authorities in an attempt to reduce penalties and perhaps interest imposed for failing to file such returns and pay taxes when due; and.
