Celebrating 50 years of
The Yehudi Menuhin School
“After so many years of
dreaming and working
towards the establishing of
the School, it is with a deep
feeling of satisfaction that
I add these few words to the
first brochure as proof of
its existence. No longer is it
a matter of conjecture and
wistful hope, but a fact of
real children, their young
needs, budding talents,
and the whole wonder and
excitement of the way ahead.”
Yehudi Menuhin, School prospectus of December 1964
16 September 1963, first day of the School
at the Prince of Wales Hotel, London.
Pupils included Karin Berger, David Holst,
Jonathan Rutherford, Hugh Kemp-Fagin,
Jeremy Menuhin, David Angel, Elisabeth
Perry, Ronan Magill, Rosemary Furniss,
Levine Andrade, Paul Sax, Michael Stanley,
Nicholas Logie, John Snow, Mary Eade.

Welcome
To celebrate the Menuhin School’s 50th anniversary, we have produced
this special brochure celebrating what we believe is going to be a very
special year of concerts and events. In fact, all the concerts promoted by
the School in the next academic year will be given either by present or past
pupils of the School. Our Celebrity Concerts are being given by our alumni,
this series features some of the greatest masterpieces in the chamber
music repertoire. We shall welcome back some three dozen past pupils to
perform in these eight concerts that run throughout the year. What better
way to commemorate, and celebrate Yehudi’s lasting legacy to us all. As
their contribution to our Anniversary Appeal, all these performers are
giving their services to the School, and we are very grateful to them for their
enormous support.
Our current pupils will continue to perform in the ever-popular Showcase
concerts. It is worth noting the special concert on 14 November to
commemorate the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, and we are
delighted that Humphrey Burton has agreed to give a pre-concert lecture
about the composer – an event that is not to be missed.
In recognition of the enormous contribution Friends organisations make
to artistic organisations, and to mark the 50th Anniversary of the School
a lecture (15 Sept) about Yehudi Menuhin and the founding of the School
will be given. This event is exclusively for the Friends of the School and the
Friends of the Wimbledon Music Festival.
Peter Medhurst returns to The Menuhin Hall, this time with two Twelfth
Night performances, and we are delighted to welcome back the wonderful
a cappella group Voces8 and the Cobham Band this autumn. Another
returning group is Riverside Opera who will also celebrate anniversaries
– those of Verdi and Wagner, as well as that of Benjamin Britten. We are
delighted that Watermill Jazz will be with us once again, and it is an honour
for us to host The Grange’s 75th Celebration Concert.
All in all, a glorious season of music-making and we look forward to
welcoming you to many of these events.

Artist Hattie Hyder has created a wonderful 50th
birthday card which you will see more of over the
next year. It will be available as a postcard and a
card from the Autumn and we hope you will enjoy
sending them to your friends. The image perfectly
captures the spirit of The Yehudi Menuhin School
with the fun and enjoyment our pupils gain
through their shared musical experiences as well
as the party atmosphere we hope to recreate on
some occasions during the year.

We have had an amazing start to our appeal with
over £1.1 million now raised towards our projects.
This has been a fantastic response by our friends
and supporters and we are most grateful to
everyone who has contributed. Thank you.
Alongside the exciting series of Celebration Concerts
we will also be celebrating our 50th anniversary with
a gala concert and dinner at the Mansion House in
London on 22nd October 2013. This event will launch
our public appeal to raise £6 million for bursary
funds (permanent endowment) and new music
studios. This very special occasion will be hosted by
The Lord Mayor, Alderman Roger Gifford, and the
School Orchestra will perform alongside Jeremy
Menuhin and Tasmin Little, OBE for 200 guests.
The Friends of The Yehudi Menuhin School
recently set up an Events Committee to work
alongside the Development Team at the School
and we look forward to introducing you to some
new events this year. We hope these will offer
a chance for you to get involved, help support
the appeal but also to have fun and enjoy some
slightly different activities.
Of course, we still have some way to go to reach
our £6 million target. With the demand for bursary
places increasing, it is vital we continue to raise
funds to support musically gifted children who
otherwise would be unable to take up a place at
the School. We remain committed to ensuring no
talented child has to turn down a place owing to
financial circumstances.
We are hopeful to begin work this year on our new
music studios. With over £650,000 raised for the
studios we are approaching the first £1million we
need to make this commitment.
During the year we will be launching a Buy a Brick
campaign offering you all the chance to buy a
brick engraved with your name so we can all leave
a personal, lasting gift to the School. These bricks
will form part of the final design in the courtyard
outside the new music studios.
There are so many ways you can get involved with
our birthday celebrations. We hope to provide the
opportunity for everyone to take part in what is
sure to be a very busy but momentous year.
If you would like to make a donation, find out more about our events or how you can get involved please call the Development Team on 01932 584797 or email us at [email protected] or visit

Annual General Meeting
The most famous jazz concert of all time, Benny
Goodman’s 1938 Carnegie Hall concert, recreated
sensationally by Pete Long’s All-Star Goodmen
Orchestra with Joan Viskant.
Ex Jools Holland arranger and star soloist Pete
Long does not have Gene Krupa, Harry James,
Lionel Hampton or Teddy Wilson in the All-Star
Goodmen Orchestra, but he has the cream of
London’s big band players guaranteeing all
the passion and frenzy of the original concert.
Few musicians would attempt a recreation of
Goodman’s work, but Pete Long is one of the
finest jazz clarinettists in the world and relishes
the challenge.
All the repertoire and scores from the Carnegie
Hall concert will be featured, including Don’t Be
That Way, Body & Soul, One O’Clock Jump, China
Boy, Sing Sing Sing, Big John Special and those
other fabulous Fletcher Henderson, Mel Powell
and Eddie Sauter arrangements. The 16-piece
orchestra will be joined by the American born
singer Joan Viskant, described by Ray Charles as
reminding him of Doris Day.

Franz Schubert once remarked of his compositions
that those that give the world the greatest delight
were born of his deepest griefs. With an eye to
this shrewd self-assessment of his output, Peter
Medhurst discusses and analyses Schubert’s
music to reveal what it is that gives the great
Viennese composer his unique musical voice.
Music to include Piano Sonata in Bb D960, Piano

“Menuhin’s school is not a
hothouse for rare musical
blooms, but the ideal
environment where selected
saplings, skilfully tended, can
grow naturally to fulfilment.
His school is certainly not
for idlers, no matter how
young they be, and reflects
the intensity of his own
apprenticeship in preparing
himself for the exacting
demands of a career in
professional music-making.”
Eric Fenby, Menuhin’s House of Music, 1970

“In six short years one of my deepest
satisfactions has been the fact that thanks
to the wholehearted dedication of children
and staff, who at all times have known
that self-giving and self-searching which
alone bring pleasure and fulfilment, my
dream has become the normal reality.
When the other day our children walked
on to the London stage with poise
and modesty and performed works
demanding a high degree of ability as
well as emotional and intellectual grasp,
I knew that all our youth could and
can challenge the cheap and corrosive
values of contemporary civilisation with
joyfulness and beauty. I am forever
grateful for their faith and their response.”
