Ximb BROCHURE - Moving Pixels Private Limited
your opportunity to recruit eXcellence
Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar
The question that often arises is “What
makes XIMB different from the host of other
B-Schools?” Everyone talks of a conducive
environment, pedagogical approach and
infrastructure.
But what separates XIMB is the maturity
that it has reached with respect to the
utilization of resources, infrastructure &
intellectual capability; be it in learning,
practice, research or training.
The complete utilization of this system lies
in the fact that it is embedded in the XIMB
culture.
A major feather in the Institute's cap is the
AIS (Academic Information System), which has
been designed to enable On-Line Quizzes,
On-Line Assignments and On-Line Business
Games. It keeps faculty and students in
continuous contact.
Recent developments at XIMB include the
opening of the office of the National HRD
Network (Utkal Chapter) and inauguration of our
purpose built 600-seater auditorium, a first for
the State of Orissa.
The current PGP-II (2002-04) and PGP-I
(2003-05) batch have an excellent mix of
experienced and fresh students.

the empowered eXplorers
Rarely has India had a greater need for talented
young people to create value in the sphere of business.
However, the need of the hour is more than just talent,
but multi-skilled, multi-functional individuals who exude
confidence, flexibility, adaptability, resilience and
tenacity.
During their time at Xavier Institute of Management
we give students every encouragement to fully explore
their potential. They are empowered to create in
themselves the value that they will carry with them when
they join any company or organisation. The Institute's
policy is to provide a large range of electives in the
second year and make them all available to all students.
This gives students the flexibility to equip themselves
with the skills and tools they require to become
exceptional leaders and managers.
The graduating students of Xavier Institute of
Management (XIM) have undergone a two-year programme
that is rigorous, demanding and continually challenging.
This ensures that they are ready, competent and eager to
explore today's complex world of management and add
significant value to an employer because of a shorter
learning curve.
XIMers are groomed for two rigorous years to learn to
be self-starters. They are versatile enough to combine
individual brilliance with team effort to deliver a final
solution to the corporate houses that match their needs.
And most importantly, they are trained to do this under
pressures experienced in real life situations.

Pedagogy
We have an entire gamut of professional pedagogy in all
aspects of management - operations, marketing, strategy,
human resources, systems, finance etc. However, there is a
set of factors that lends the pedagogy of this institute its
excellence.
Theory: The institute places a stress on strong
theoretical fundamentals instead of solely relying on
application orientation through cases. This ensures that the

Faculty
At XIMB, we have worked hard to attract
and retain faculty of the highest caliber.
Not only are they highly talented and
accomplished individuals, but they also share
a common passion for development and
learning of students. Their aim is nothing short
of bringing out the true potential in students
to ensure that they become the very best that
they can be.

Functional Areas
Our academic courses are delivered through nine
functional areas; Marketing, Accounting & Finance,
Information Systems, Human Resources Management,
Decision Sciences and Operations Management,
Organisational Behaviour, General Management,
Economics and Rural Management.
Year 1
In the first year students are given a broad
appreciation of business functions through a range of
subjects. During this phase they begin to identify those
areas wherein their aptitude lie.
Year 2
In the second year the students select from among
an array of electives according to their inclinations and
competence. Unlike many other B-schools we place no
restrictions on which electives may be chosen. This
allows sufficient leeway to students to pursue their
fields of interest without restriction and achieve
a cross-functional command.
“Here is why XIMB students are well suited
for the corporate world: They are
disciplined, have gone through a rigorous
process of learning, are committed to the
job and above all have learnt the skills of
Management. We at XIMB have ensured
that the students are a formed, normed

business planning stage.
Its activities also include undertaking
independent projects on market research, sales
strategy development, conducting seminars, quizzes,
training programs for students, corporate and dealer
interface programs. MAXIM is guided by faculty
advisors in the marketing department of XIMB.

XIMAHR - XIM Association for Human Resources
XFin - The Finance Association of XIM
This is a platform for learning and sharing of ideas on
HR. It is advised by three members of the faculty.
Workshops and seminars enable members to enhance their
classroom learning with in-depth exploration of the key
issues in HR today.
XFin is instrumental in promoting activities related to
finance on the campus. The activities spill over from the
arena of academics into trading in the stock market. An
innovative, fully student-managed Mutual Fund, the first
of its kind in any Indian B-school has been floated under the
auspices of XFin. It offers students the opportunity to
understand the mechanism of the Stock Exchange.
Live HR related projects, such as a recent one carried
out for NIIT, give first hand experience of formulation and
implementation of HR strategies in business.
One of the major events carried out by X-fin is the
analysis of the Union Budget presented by the Finance
Minister of India. Last year, the event was organized in
association with the Bhubaneswar chapter of ICWAI.
Speakers from the National Stock Exchange and ICICI
Bank joined student speakers from XIMB and more than
700 people attended the event.
Come Xpressions, the annual fest of XIMB, X-Fin
conducts several finance games including a Stock Market
simulation called Dalal Street. The workings of
International finance are exhibited through 'Dollars and
Yens'. There are also Panel Discussions and Paper
Presentations with notable speakers from the world of
finance.
The association has close ties with the National HRD
Network, which has opened its Utkal Chapter offices
within the premises of XIMB. Both XIMAHR and NHRDN
Utkal Chapter organize and hold talks in and around
Bhubaneshwar on issues of emerging interest in Human
Resource Management.
XFin organizes seminars, talks and lectures.
It brings out an annual publication titled Invest Aid and
an Xpressions special issue called Invex.
A remarkable initiative of XFin is the Knowledge
Centre. Primarily set up to help students from nonfinance backgrounds to understand finance, it is
regularly updated with new definitions and insights into
the theories of finance and economics. It also holds
support sessions for the PGP I students to help them
overcome difficulties and introduce them to new fields
of knowledge. The Facts and Figures column of their web
page is regularly updated with data from the economy
and the markets so as to provide an up-to-date readyreckoner for students.

Ulysses
Ulysses is a business strategy game conceived and
developed by students of XIMB.
It is an online Simulation game, a game that revolves
around formation of strategies. It involves different
aspects of management from Finance, Marketing and
Operations.
From Capital Structure and Financing to
Investment, Capacity Utilization to Inventory
Management, Sales and Distribution Management to
Brand Management - this game covers every facet of real
life decision-making in the corporate world. It tests the
ability not only to read the market, with all its
complexities but the ability to preempt it-the hallmark
of the master strategist.
X-Stage: The Dramatics Association
This is a new XIMB student association set up to
enable students to express their creative side. In its first
year X-Stage has staged five very well received
productions with more to come in the future. All of these
have been completely developed in-house.
X-Stage has also explored other areas of creative
expression such as dance drama, street theatre and
drama workshops. Exploration of challenging issues of
the day in our country or the role of managers through
the eyes of drama provides members with insights and
deeper understanding.
Each decision one takes will affect not only the
fortunes of one’s own firm but also those of the
competitors and of the industry as a whole. Each
Company is competing to gain the maximum market
share. This simulation provides a dynamic environment
where change is the only constant. The environment
may be simulated but the challenge is real.
Media & PR Team
The media committee acts as an interface
between XIMB and the rest of the world. It is a
student run body with assistance from two faculty
coordinators. The media committee ensures
coverage for the different events organized in XIMB
through close liaison with local and national media.
Ulysses was played last year during Xpressions, the
annual B-School Event of XIMB. 170 teams from different
B-Schools participated in this game which was played
over a period of one month. On the Corporate side, the
game saw participation from Infosys, TCS, L&T, SIDBI,
Satyam etc
The committee works to ensure that a coherent
brand image is potrayed for XIMB and maximum
coverage is received for the several activities
happening in the institute. Action for the committee
peaks each year in November with Xpressions, the
XIMB hosted inter-business school fest, where they
coordinate the media coverage for the various
activities happening on campus. The committee also
regularly disseminates articles and papers written
by XIMB students.
According to experts; “The game provides an
opportunity to view the various business functions
holistically and understand the dynamics of crossfunctional interactions”

Academic Information System (AIS)
AIS is a home spun software system and is one of its
kind among the business schools in the country. It helps to
automate academic administration and knowledge
management within academic institutions. AIS includes
sophisticated tools that streamline processes, enhance
academic development, and provide integrated solution to
academic development. Today's higher education
institutions are under unprecedented pressure; to serve
the needs of students and employees, address demands for
educational reforms, trim budgets in the face of
decreasing funding, and increase grant revenues. AIS
provides benefits to each member of the academic
community in the institution - the academic office, the
students, the faculty and the management.

XSYS - The Systems Association of XIM
XSYS, The Systems Association of XIMB is one of the
most vibrant associations on campus, recognising the
key role of IT as a strategic tool of management. The
high number of students placed in IT and related
industries bear testimony to the strong IT focus at XIMB.
Through XSYS, members get opportunities to
improve their IT knowledge and skills via guest lectures,
seminars and workshops and hands-on experience
delivering IT projects and consultancy services.

Today, Non Governmental Organization face
unprecedented pressure. And they are also under
increasing financial scrutiny. Tracking financial planning
and monitoring within your organization is no longer a
matter of choice - It's a matter of survival.
NGO's are project organizations. They are involved in
implementing several projects being funded by
Government and Funding agencies. Successful project
implementation requires impeccable planning, progress
monitoring and strong financial discipline.
PAMIS, yet another in house software development
initiative, integrates financial planning and control with
project planning and monitoring techniques. PAMIS enables
you to improve financial planning and forecasting, project
planning and monitoring and be effective in achieving
developmental objectives.
Examination On-Line (EOL)
In any educational institute, apart from teaching,
performance assessment and evaluation is one of the major
challenges. Learning is enhanced through timely and
frequent feedback. Most teachers would find the
Performance Evaluation tedious and monotonous.
Internet Survey (iSurvey)
Conducting Surveys is a common requirement in
many disciplines such as Business Management,
Psychology, Sociology, etc. The manual method of
questionnaire design, administration, data collection
and compilation is a very tedious process. iSurvey is a
web based solution to conduct surveys. The process of
designing and administering the survey is greatly
simplified when you use iSurvey. The data collected
can be exported to SPSS or a Spreadsheet for further
analysis.
EOL is a solution for the performance evaluation woes of
the teachers and students. This web based tool gives
complete control to the teacher to build his question bank,
design quizzes and examinations and administer the quiz
over the Internet and publish results.
“XIMB is one of the B-Schools in India that gives a

hardworking and sincere.”

Student Alumni Committee
XPRESSIONS
One can never underestimate the importance of
the alumni of XIMB. These are the people who, in the
larger context of the outer world are the living
embodiment of what our Institute stands and strives
for. The alumni committee performs the vital
function of keeping open all lines of communication
between XIMB and its past students, as well as
providing means for the alumni to maintain contact
with each other.
Every November XIMB gets ready to put out the
welcome mat for a large number of the greatest minds
from B-schools and the commercial world from across
India. The students throw themselves in to organising all
the events with great enthusiasm, relishing the
opportunity to practice their managerial and
organisational skills.
No stone is left unturned to afford the guests with
an unforgettable experience as the participants enjoy a
riveting combination of cultural and artistic events,
fierce competition in simulated management games,
panel discussions and paper presentations.
The committee maintains regular Internet
communication with the past students and also
brings out the quarterly alumni newsletter, X-post. It
also facilitates alumni gatherings in India and
abroad.
XIMB alumni are proof of the quality of XIMB
learning and many now hold key leadership positions
in their chosen fields. The students welcome the
inspiration these past students give and value their
interactions with their predecessors.
“The students at XIM-B constitute a vibrant knowledge
culture that is rooted in intellectual discipline,
enshrined in teamwork and guided by individual
vision. We fuel their (students) desire to excel”
Govindrajan Srinivasan
Associate Professor

SPORTS AT XIM
XIMB students recognise the value of a healthy
mind in a healthy body. That's why we, at XIMB keep
sports at the top of our minds. However busy the
study schedules, students ensure they get maximum
benefit from XIMB’s excellent sports facilities.
Along with the huge football ground we also
have a
basketball court, volleyball courts, badminton
court, lawn tennis courts, and TT Boards. Apart from
inter-college competitions, XIMB also arranges
matches against corporate teams and organise in
house competitions the most keenly contested of
which are those against the faculty.

“ My fondest memory in XIMB is when Prof. S Govindrajan,
recommended a list of all-time great books and articles on
leadership (business and general) and marketing, and I
actually happened to get and read all of them from our
excellent library. Till today, I do not recollect any time in
my life, when my thinking took such an exponential jump.
Also, with associations, festivals, celebrity talks and

courses, quizzes and presentations, XIMB was an intense
mix of creativity and serious study, all in a location which is
as serenely beautiful as it can get.”

Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa, is situated in
the Khurda district. The city has been built in two
parts;on one side is the ancient town with its world
famous temples and on the other, the newly
constructed capital with its offices, courts and private
residences. Bhubaneshwar, geographically serves not
only as a link between northern and southern India, but
it also opens up channels of communication and
commerce with the rest of the world. Visitors are
impressed with the splendour of the three monuments
- the soaring spire of the Lingaraja temple, the whitedomed peace Pagoda of Dhauli on the bank of the river
Daya, and the pink temple of Mahavir Jain on the
Khandagiri hill.
Apart from being a temple city, Bhubaneswar is
amongst the most favored destination for IT companies
and corporates. Some of the big names like Infosys and
Satyam already have their development centres in
Bhubaneswar along with STPI Park.
