Round 1 of the WRC kicked off with Rally Ireland recently. Aussie gun driver Chris Atkinson is this year driving for the Citroen team as part of their Junior Driver program. Atkinson, with Stephane Prevot on board, finished the very wet tarmac event in 5th place despite having a very large spin on SS6, which cut a power pole in half. Fortunately with the help of some spectators, the pair was able to continue. By SS15 on the final day, they had worked their way into 4th position. But come SS16, the second last of the event, the Citroen ran wide on a right hander and crashed into a stone wall. Again, with the help of spectators, they continued on to finish the stage, only dropping 1 place in the process. The first 4 places went to Loeb, Sordo, Hirvonen and Solberg. The WRC moves to the ice and snow of Norway for round 2 on Feb 13-15. TARGA WREST POINT. The inaugural Targa Wrest Point was won by Greg Garwood and John Allen in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS by just 3 seconds from Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett in their new Nissan R35 GTR. Local pair Jason and John White finished in 3rd place in the Lamborghini, a further 12 seconds behind. MSCT life member and all-round good guy Barry Oliver finished in 6th place with Jim Richards in the Porsche 911 GT2. Using Targa roads from previous years South of Hobart, the event attracted 115 starters. WRC2-Rally of Norway. Citroen driver Sebastian Loeb has won his second WRC round in 2 starts after winning the Rally of Norway. Mikko Hirvonen was 2nd and Jari-Matti Latvala was third. Aussie Chris Atkinson did not contest this round as part of the Citroen Junior Rally team, although fellow Aussie Dale Moscatt made an appearance with the Junior team, co-driving for Evgeny Novikov. The pair finished 12th. MSCT 2008 Awards Dinner Our annual dinner and trophy presentation was held at Archers Manor on the 17th of January. The event consisted of 4 different competitions;- Modern, Classic, Australian Rally Championship, and the Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Championship. The club had representation with 4 members this year, with 3 of those contesting the Modern section. Hot favourite in the Modern section was Barry Oliver riding with Jim Richards in the Porsche GT2. Also in the co-drivers seat in the modern competition was Timmy Kulhanek, sitting in with Michael Hurford in a Mitsubishi EvoIX. Event co-owner Les Walkden even entered in an Sti WRX with Daniel Willson on board. Shane Russell entered the ARC in his Evo1 with a codriver from the North Island. After 15 competition stages, Jim Richards and Barry Oliver finished in 2nd place, just 4.4 seconds behind the winners Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett in an R35 Skyline. The Van den Berg brothers finished in 3rd place in their Evo IX. Next best MSCT member was Les Walkden in 14th place, with Tim Kulhanek not far behind in 16th place. Shane Russell started the event well, running inside the top 10 on day 1. Unfortunately a broken diff housing on day 2caused him to lose heaps of time. He was able to rejoin the event for the last stage on Saturday, and continue on for Sunday. He eventually finished in 10 place in the ARC competition. Other than the car that Les drove, Les Walkden Rallying had 2 other cars entered in the event. Tony Longhurst and Linda Long finished 4th in the Modern competition in an Sti WRX, and Brendan Reeves and Rhianon Smyth finished 4th in the ARC, also in an Sti WRX.
