Angel`s House - Pilot Designs
2011 news The Angel’s House doors have been open as an emergency safe haven for foster children of Coweta County and beyond for over seven years. A Message from the Board We consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to be able to continue to fulfill our mission of providing a safe, loving home for children. Your support helps us to make this possible. During this past year, we were able to meet many needs at the house. Memorial contributions allowed us to replace the much used stove and dishwasher, and soon we will replace the well-worn sofa and loveseat. We also received an anonymous donation of a car to replace the very used one we had. Our fantastic administrative and house staff continues to keep things running smoothly. They are a wonderful group of people who provide a nurturing environment and excellent care for “our” children. Their efforts help to make our responsibilities as board members much easier! In This Issue: My term as president is coming to an end, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the board for the wonderful job they do. Ann Phillips, who is our current vice-president, will be taking over in January, and she will serve the position very well. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your continued and generous support of Angel’s House. We wish each of you a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy new year. Jill McKnight, Jennifer Palmer, Beth Quick and Kelley Welden joined us this past spring. These dedicated and talented ladies have so much to offer, and we are very fortunate to have them working with us. Angel’s House has seen many personnel and program changes during these years. No matter the length of stay, the one thing that remains the same is the care provided for each child. Based upon numerous changes at the state level regarding service needs, Angel’s House has adjusted its program to meet those needs. A big change that has impacted our program dealt with the age requirements for children under the age of 12 who must receive a special permission waiver granted by a Regional Director in order to be placed in a group home. During the first three years, children who came into care typically had a longer length of stay and were elementary school age. During the most recent four years, the age range has shifted to 13 years and older. Occasionally, Angel’s House still provides care for Our Staff those under 12, but this has become a rarity. Because of this shift to teenagers and the referral base being predominantly female, Angel’s House has only served females since August 2007, allowing the program to utilize the facility to its optimum function. Meeting each child’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs remains the primary service goal of Angel’s House. Our service area predominantly remains Coweta County, but we do provide services for children outside the county. This care is for children in state custody. Overnight to 904 days has been the range of stay. Many of the children who come to Angel’s House on an emergency basis walk in with only the clothes on their backs. Community support is extremely necessary and deeply appreciated in meeting the needs of these children. Gift cards tend to be the most versatile manner to meet these needs. Angel’s House continues to provide emergency 23-hour stay for Coweta County DFCS “special needs” cases. - Becky Parish, Program Director Becky Parish continues as the Program Coordinator at Angel’s House. Becky has been with Angel’s House since January 2007. Becky has been employed with Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries, Inc. for 22 years. The joys of working at Angel’s House continue to be balanced with the heart-breaking situations that bring our children to us! This joy and heart-break are possible on a daily basis because of God’s sustaining Grace. Kaye Todd continues as the Administrative Assistant at Angel’s House. Kaye has been with Angel’s House since August 2010 and with Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries, Inc. for three years. Kaye enjoys the variety of job tasks and working with the board. The tremendous amount of community support (especially at Christmas) was a great blessing and very touching. The full-time Direct Care staff members are Erik and Angela Vielhaber, Sania Elshorbgy and Becca Rountree. The Vielhabers have been group leaders at Angel’s House since December 2009 but came to us with 4 years experience from another program. Sania became a part of our team in September 2010 and Becca in October 2010. All four came to Angel’s House with a wide range of work and life experiences. Angel’s House is blessed with these dedicated individuals who look at their work as a ministry, not just a job! The Direct Care staff members live in for a seven-day period, 24 hours-per-day every other week. They function in the role of what most people know as the “mom” and “dad” of the household. We, as a staff, are reminded every day of the responsibility, privilege and opportunity that is ours to impact the lives of those who have been entrusted in our care. We prayerfully hope that each child learns as much from us as we do from them. Regardless of the length of stay, each staff member’s life is impacted by those who come through our doors. It is our goal that every child who comes to Angel’s House knows that she is loved and cared for by a staff team, God and a community that wants to make a positive difference in her life due to her stay at Angel’s House. Our prayer for each child remains: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 Angel’s House PO Box 657 Newnan GA 30264 2 770.251.7050 www.theangelshouse.org 2012 Run For Angels & Chicken-Q Saturday, February 4th, 2012 The 10th Annual 5K/10K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run, is set for Saturday, February 4th, 2012. This event is Angel’s House’s largest fundraiser, having raised over $210,000 since its inception in 2003. As both the 5K and 10K courses are certified as Peachtree Road Race Qualifiers, this has become a highly visible and well-participated event, attracting over 600 runners and walkers from all over the southeast. We strive to stage a quality athletic event by continuing to improve and expand what we offer our runners. The run is professionally managed by Pacesetter’s P.R. and takes place in historic downtown Newnan. Many committed volunteers are actively involved in the planning and implementation of the race, including various community and student groups. We are grateful for all who support the run by volunteering time, offering their services or by making an in-kind or monetary donation. The run sponsorship campaign is currently underway, offering a unique opportunity as 100% of your tax-deductible donation will go directly to Angel’s House. The race itself is fully sustained by participants’ entry fees. Please bring your families and enjoy a day of fun beginning with the Run for Angels and ending with a delicious chicken lunch. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Bambi Edge at 770-253-7758. The 2012 Angel’s House Chicken-Q will be held at the First United Methodist Church Parish Hall in conjunction with the Run for Angel’s on Saturday, February 4, 2012. We had a very successful 2011 Chicken-Q, serving over 1,375 plates of the famous Huckleberry’s chicken. Our community continues to show overwhelming support for this important fundraiser. Since 2002, the Chicken-Q has raised approximately $62,000 for Angel’s House. Several local churches have come together to make this event such a wonderful success, and we welcome all of the churches in the community to participate. These friends of Angel’s House sell tickets, bake homemade desserts and work to serve our many hungry patrons on the day of the Chicken-Q. Tickets will be for sale through the downtown churches. A drive-thru pick-up line opens at 10:30 a.m. for those who would like “to go” plates. Others are invited to eat in the Parish Hall beginning at 11a.m. Jennifer Palmer and Kelley Welden are the 2012 Chicken-Q co-chairs and can be contacted for more information. The price was too good to pass up and we sincerely appreciate the efforts and generosity of Mike Fitzpatrick Ford. 4 Angel’s House PO Box 657 Newnan GA 30264 770.251.7050 www.theangelshouse.org Back to School 2011 A Christmas Story 2010 “T’was the night before Christmas and all through the house,” and how many children are snuggled in their bed at Angel’s House? One of the joys and potential disasters could come from that very question, because all the plans and present needs can change at the very last minute. This Christmas, the final count changed on the 22nd, just two nights before Christmas presents from Santa! If change was a surprise to Angel’s House staff, we would have been in panic mode. But due to the overwhelming support from the community, we’ve learned not to panic because there are always plenty of presents to meet the needs. (And amazingly the presents are “exactly the right ones” for whoever new becomes a part of the family!) We are thankful for the wonderful, generous, fabulous donors that make the eyes and hearts of our children and staff glow on Christmas morning! One of the girls who came to Angel’s House with a history of running away recently made the comment that she had a dream where she was being encouraged to run away again, but she woke up remembering that she told the person, “No! I’ve learned so much at Angel’s House, and I want to make something out of my life!” In Memory of Mrs. Virginia Murphey Ms. Lucille A. She said her only memory of home was the yelling, especially in the morning – an awful way to start her day. One of our girls who left recently asked the staff, “How’s the family at Angel’s House going to continue when I leave our family?” In Memory of Mr. John Shepherd Mrs. Doris Shepherd In Memory of Jake Shirley Mr. and Mrs. Randy Connell In Honor of Kimber Elise Steele on Her First Birthday Mr. and Mrs. Donald Craft In Memory of Mrs. Dorothy Vaughn Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Craven In Honor of Carly and Reid Vining Mr. Marsha Waller In Memory of Mrs. Bonnie Walker Dr. and Mrs. Patrick H. It began with monetary donations for presents at Christmas time and grew into an annual humanitarian fund for children in foster care. In October 2000, a crisis developed when lack of urgent foster care forced children and social workers to stay overnight at the county Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS) office. DFCS called on the neighborhood group for help. They quickly secured a room at the local men’s shelter, and this temporary solution convinced the group a county emergency shelter was desperately needed. The newly formed Newnan-Coweta Children’s Shelter Board went to work raising the one million dollars needed to fund construction of a permanent home and start-up program. Home-grown country music legend Alan Jackson and his family took special interest in the shelter and helped to make the dream come true. He and his wife Denise were instrumental in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the shelter by putting on a special concert as well as donating their corvette to be raffled. The Jackson’s were offered the honor of naming the shelter. They chose the name Angel’s House as it is their prayer that each child seeking shelter in the facility will be surrounded by “heavenly and earthly angels”. Staff members are told on a regular basis things like: “This is the only home I’ve ever had,” “You’re the only mom I’ve ever had,” “You’re the only dad I’ve ever known.” As well as our girls becoming our family during the time they are at Angel’s House, we also become their family.” Community support was also overwhelming and on August 21, 2002, ground was broken for Angel’s House. Another milestone was reached when the house was dedicated in February, 2004. Georgia’s First Lady Mary Perdue gave the keynote address. She remarked that “this project is what I would like to see all over the state of Georgia.” She continued by saying the community response to a much needed shelter is “of far greater value than anything the state can provide.” Since opening later that year on June 21, this special home has been a safe haven for over 155 children. Angel’s House runs just like a home with the group leaders serving as house parents. It is heartwarming to visit, smell the meals being prepared, watch as the children play on the playground, do their homework, or visit in the garden. 12 Angel’s House PO Box 657 Newnan GA 30264 770.251.7050 www.theangelshouse.org
