The Eagle`s Eye 2015 - DeMotte Christian School
DeMotte Christian School Eagle’s Eye May, 2015 Graduation Issue Graduating Class Motto: "Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” I Timothy 4:12 Graduation – May 28, 2015 @ 7:00 p.m. DeMotte Christian All Purpose Room Parting Words from the Administrator “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” - I Timothy 4:12 About this time last year, our theme verse for the 2014-2015 school year was introduced at the end-of-the-year chapel. The graduating eighth graders chose the verse as their parting gift to our school. It has been the theme for our chapels and devotions this past year. God has again used it to teach and comfort us during the past year as students, staff, and families. Eighth graders, you have picked a verse that will be a wonderful parting gift to our school. I am looking forward to how our Lord will use this verse at DeMotte Christian School. It is my hope that you will use what you have learned over the past ten years about God, His son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit to propel you in your lives. I Timothy 4:12 speaks about setting an example for believers in a variety of ways. I challenge and encourage you to do just that. It reminds of what my father always told me growing up. I was annoyed by the saying early on but grew to appreciate it. As I walked out of the house, my father would practically always say, “Remember, you’re a Brinks”. In other words, he was saying, remember who you represent and who represents you. As you go and experience the next step in your journey of life, remember who you represent. In all that you do, set an example for believers so that they know that you are a child of God. You have received training at DeMotte Christian School. You have been prepared academically, socially, and spiritually to move on to the next segment of your lives as young adults in High School. Many of you have already made a solid commitment to God and have accepted Jesus as lord and savior through the work of the Holy Spirit. May you continue to grow in that relationship and be excited as you see Him actively working through you as you continue in your lives. If you have not made a firm commitment yet, I urge you to seriously consider what you have seen and heard, not only at DMC, but also in your churches and more importantly your homes. A genuine relationship with Him will be a joy and comfort through for the rest of your lives on earth and also into all eternity. It’s been my honor to be your principal this year and your teacher for two years prior to this year. It has been a joy to watch you grow and mature to become young women and men. May you continue to set an example for believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. To do that you must remember who you are. So as you walk out of this building as a student for the last time, I want to remind you of who you are and Who you represent. Remember, you’re a Child of God. Mr. Devon K. Brinks, Principal DeMotte Christian School 2 Dedication We dedicate this issue of the EAGLE’S EYE to all our parents who love and support DeMotte Christian. Staff to Receive Recognition As an encouragement to our staff, the following recognition for service is in place at DMC: 5 years – Engraved Golden Apple 10 years – Engraved School Bell 15 years – Gift Card or Engraved Bible 20 years – Engraved plaque with photo will be displayed in the school hallway. They will also receive a gift certificate to a bookstore of their choice. 25 years – Engraved Gold Watch 30 years – Chiming Wall Clock Congratulations to those receiving awards this year: 15 years – Mrs. Friend Mrs. Tazelaar Mr. Schurman 25 years – Mrs. Stoel Staff Leaving DMC th In the spring of 1990 I had the opportunity to be a long-term substitute for 5 grade teacher Mrs. DeVries. The first thing I saw on her desk was a quote that said, “We want to see Jesus.” Having taught in a public school in Michigan just out of college, it was a thrill to be able to pray, study the Bible, share my faith experiences with students at DMC. I pray that in some way, I helped them to see Jesus. When no music teacher seemed to be available to teach K-6, I filled in for two years, waiting for th God to send Mrs. Funderburg to us. After one year teaching junior high, a 4 grade position came open th th and I happily moved there and have been in 4 and 5 for the past 22 years. My legacy at DeMotte Christian seems to be that I am the teacher who loves rocks, sings, and makes pretty good chocolate chip cookies. But the contribution I am most proud of is the impact that sharing miracle stories during Friday morning devotions have had on students as we proved over and over that the God of the Bible is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Words are so inadequate to express the gratitude I have for the privilege of teaching at DeMotte Christian. Teaching and being encouraged by a great staff has been such a blessing. Thank you to parents for all of the support and affirmation throughout the years. And to all of the students whose lives I have touched, remember: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” III John verse 4. Mrs. Stoel 3 My journey with Christian education began in Lynden, Washington, with my parent’s strong commitment to have their children education by Christian teachers. After graduating from Dordt, there were two years teaching in Hanford, CA. After moving to DeMotte, I spent precious time raising my own children. Then came DMC. That part of the journey began about 38 years ago bringing my little girl to kindergarten (pre-preschool days). What security there was in knowing our three children would be taught from the same Christian viewpoint as their home. th In 1986, I began teaching 4 grade with Mrs. Bowers then moved nd up/down to 2 grade with Mrs. Wunderink. Suddenly, after 28 years at DMC, it’s over. Oh my, have I grown in wisdom and knowledge from all those wonderful students! Another huge positive part of teaching has been working with a supportive staff and parents. We’ve worked, laughed, ate, cried, consoled, guided, and prayed together. What a blessing! I wish I could preview God’s lesson plan book for my life for the next year. But I’ve learned the Hand that has led will continue to lead. All glory to Him! Mrs. McCune New to DMC Hi! My name is Miss Huizenga, and I will be teaching middle school English here at DeMotte Christian. I graduated from Dordt College in May with a Secondary Education and English degree, along with a middle school endorsement. I also had the opportunity to explore my passion for English Literature by studying abroad in England at Oxford University. Before Dordt, I attended many different Christian schools in the Chicagoland area. God has given me the passion to work with children and I am looking forward to getting to know the DMC community. I’m very excited about the opportunity to teach at DMC and I cannot wait for this next year to begin! Hello! My name is Mrs. Roosma, and I am excited to return to DeMotte Christian School next year to teach second grade. I will be moving back to DeMotte with my husband Eric, son John (3), and daughter Audrey (1). Since graduating from Cornerstone University in 2012, I have spent time teaching Kindergarten, working in Academic Support at Kuyper College, st and, most recently, teaching 1 grade in a Bilingual classroom in Grand Rapids Public Schools. I am excited to not only be returning to DeMotte, but also to a Christian school and community. I am looking forward to serving faithfully with you in the upcoming years! Hi, my name is Mr. Weaver, and I am excited to be joining the staff here at DeMotte th th Christian School. I will be teaching 6 and 7 history and physical education and th possibly some 6 grade science. I grew up in Caledonia, Michigan where I attended Dutton Christian and South Christian High. I received an Associates Degree from Grand Rapids Community College and a BA in Social Studies and English from th Cornerstone University. I am currently finishing up my 6 year of teaching. I spent th th the past year at Grant Christian Schoool teaching a combined 7 /8 grade class, while my first 5 years were spent in northern New Jersey at Ringwood Christian School. There I taught middle school history, boys’ physical education, Bible, English Language Arts and coached the boys’ soccer and basketball teams and was an assistant for the track team. I am looking forward to joining the DMC community! 4 Highlights from the Classrooms Preschool Year Highlights – Mrs. Friend We learned about Jesus and made new friends. The 1st All-School Selfie!! (L) Mrs. Funderburg celebra ting “Sports Jersey Da y” with Junior High (R) Mr. Blom and Mr. Brinks on “Twinkie Da y” 20 To the 8th Grade Parents ~ Congratulations! Your son or daughter has now reached a milestone in his or her life. As teachers, we have been instrumental in the lives of your child. You, however, have been and will continue to be the most important teacher your child will ever have. Continue to be the type of parent you want them to be someday. For some of you it is your first child graduating from DMC. For others it may be your second or third. For others it may be your last child to graduate. We request you continue to remember DeMotte Christian; the school that helped nurture your child during those important formative years. When your children leave DeMotte Christian School, the tie you once had with the school is broken. This means your family is growing up. Continue to remember all of us in your prayers and your financial responsibilities. Continue to return to visit us. Parents who have their last child/grandchild graduating from DeMotte Christian are: Jamie and Missi Bogaard Robert Boonstra Beth Burke Dan and Julie Brodner Donald and Barbara Bultema Valerie and Craig Finch Brian and Devin Flores Kevin and Renee Huseman Michael and Michele Martin Steve and Patti Ryken Tim and Laurie Simpson Tim and Laurel Stegenga Russ and Marla VanderMolen Elton and Lauri Vander Tuin Parents who have their last child graduating from DeMotte Christian were asked to reflect and put their thoughts down. The following expressions were written… ********************************************************************* As we look to the graduation of our last daughter, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness in allowing our children to attend Christian schools. We have been part of 3 different Christian schools and each one has been such a blessing. We are so thankful for the teachers, staff, friends and families we have had the privilege of serving with in the many aspects of these schools. We look forward to all God has in store for DeMotte Christian School in the future. Thanks be to God for the blessing of Christian Education! Pastor Jamie and Missi Bogaard th Lindsey joined DMC in the 7 grade and one of the concerns we had as parents was her adapting and making a new group of friends. She was welcomed immediately socially and some of the girls have been to our home. Lindsey is very proud to have been part of DMC and has many fond memories of field trips and playing volleyball. She is excited about going to Washington DC and is looking forward to her years at Covenant. As parents, we couldn’t be rd happier with DeMotte Christian Schools, Inc. Lindsey will be our 3 child to attend Covenant. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Donald and Barbara Bultema Many years ago we became part of the DMC family when we sent our first child to Kindergarten. Here we are, thirteen years later, watching your youngest graduate. DMC has been such a blessing to our family and truly has been an extension of home and church for us. We have watched our children learn so much, but, most importantly, we have watched them mature in their faith, in part by what they have been taught at DMC. Christ is taught not only in Bible class, but in every subject and every aspect of education at DMC. This wouldn’t have been possible in the public school system. Therefore, we are so thankful God has given us the opportunity and privilege to send our children to a Christian grade school in our community. Steve and Patti Ryken We are Tim and Laurel Stegenga and our youngest child, Abigail, is graduating from DeMotte Christian School. We have had at least one of our children at this school over the past 15 years. We are so very grateful that many years ago a group of people got together and saw a vision of a local Christian school. The fulfillment of that vision has so blessed us, both as a local community and our children. Christian Education is one of the greatest investments we as parents can have in the lives of our children. Knowing that every day our children were in a Christian environment, being shown in all subjects that God is in control and that this is His world. DMC has played an important and vital role in helping us raise our children in the fear and knowledge of God. Laurel and I are very grateful and appreciative of all those who have been in the Lord’s service at DeMotte Christian School. May God continue our school for many generations to come. Tim and Laurel Stegenga DeMotte Christian has always been a big part of our lives. We both graduated from DMC, and then eight years later Marla came back to teach for about 4 years before starting a rd family, and is currently back again in her 3 year of teaching. th Our three children attended DMC, and now our last one is graduating 8 grade. It is hard to believe that this season in our lives is already here. Our children loved DMC and we loved the fact that they were being taught the same Biblical values that we, as parents, were teaching at home. We appreciated all the academic, extra-curricular, fine arts, & spiritual aspects that were & are a part of the education at DMC. Thank you to all the faculty, board members, & society members who over the years were instrumental in providing Christian education for our family. Russ and Marla VanderMolen We feel very blessed to have been able to send all four of our children to DMC. The education they received, the attention and love from the staff, and the friendships they have made are worth every sacrifice we have made. Every time the student body sings “We Believe”, we are reminded of why we made this choice. We believe, and so does DMC. Elton and Lauri VanderTuin 22 The 8th Grade Graduates ~ My name is Joseph A A. I am mostly just called Joey. I was born January 17, 2001, and I am 14 years old now. I have a great mom named Deborah (Debbie) who does checking and payments at Windy Ridge, and a wonderful dad named Joseph (Joe) who has his own painting company named “New Life Painting”. I have two sisters and four brothers. My oldest sister on my mom’s side of the family is Kristen. She is in college, and she is 31 years old. My second oldest sister, also on my mom’s side of the family is Laura. She is 25 years old. I have a younger brother in fourth grade. His name is Matthew, and he recently turned 10 years old. Robert is my only brother from my mom’s side and is 27 years old. Neil is one of my brothers from my dad’s side. He is 36 years old. Michael is also a brother from my dad’s side, and he is 27 years old. In 5th grade I participated in band and played the alto saxophone. In 6th grade I did band again (alto saxophone) and also did spell bowl. In 7th grade I did band again (alto saxophone), I also did a musical called The Music Man, and did spell bowl again. I also joined basketball, but I dropped out. This year, I did band again (alto saxophone) and surprisingly didn’t do spell bowl because not enough people joined. I was also the volleyball manager, which was fun. One thing I will miss about DMC is the friendly Christian community; however I assume that it would be the same at Covenant Christian. Another thing I will miss about DMC is the amazing, kindhearted teachers that I’ve had, although I also expect that at Covenant Christian. If someone were inquiring about DMC, I would tell them that they should definitely send their children here. They will be accepted and will learn more about God. I would also tell them that we have friendly, yet fair teachers and a great group of people. Some advice I have for the 7th graders is to get your homework done on time and do it the best you can. Also, do everything you do for God because it will help. My class verse (I Timothy 4:12) is important to me. It reminds me that even though I’m only in Middle School, I can still do big things. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. I hope to be involved in some sports (don’t know what), band, choir, and maybe even a musical or two. I’m not sure what I will become, but I believe that whatever it may be, the Lord will guide me through it. On July 10, 2000, there was born a little baby, to the parents of Missi and Jamie Bogaard. The baby has two siblings, Tyler and Isabella Bogaard. After a short debate they decided to name the baby Andrea N Bogaard. Several years have passed, and I am now an eighth grader at DeMotte Christian School. I have only been here for two years, but hey, that’s still cool. I sent my brother off to college in the fall of 2014. He was only 18 then, but now, 19, and a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University. Isabella, or Bella, is now 16, and is a sophomore at Covenant Christian High School. She always seems to have an ultra-filled schedule. My dad is a pastor and my mom is a secretary for Core Construction. Here at school I have been doing several things. In seventh grade I played volleyball and was involved in the musical, The Music Man, Jr.; I was Ethel Toffelmeir. I did shot put and discus in track that year. I also did ISSMA, where I sang a solo and ensemble. In my eighth grade year, I was involved in a few more things than seventh grade. I was in volleyball, again, and then soon after, I took on the job of managing the basketball team. It was a rough season, but we had a blast. I am in track, like last year, but this year I am doing hurdles along with shot put and discus. My class verse of I Timothy 4:12 means a lot to me because being the youngest in my family I feel like I have to set an example. I have to watch what I say, and I have to behave in a way that is pleasing to Christ that I may use his words without having to scramble. I need to show love for everyone and share my faith with everyone. I must be an example in the way I use my beliefs in the Lord alone. I need to show that, even though I am not perfect and pure, I can be if I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. When I leave DeMotte Christian School, I am going to miss the people. The people here in DeMotte are the nicest people you probably ever meet. Sure there are a few people that you may not like, but everyone has those kinds of people. I am also going to miss the teachers. The teachers are very kind and flexible. Even though sometimes they seem like they are out to get you and have you fail, this is untrue, they are only being hard on you because they want to get you used to the future. I will also miss the nice and delicious hot lunches Mrs. Tazelaar comes to school every day to make for us. She feeds us day in and day out with a happy smile and love. She knows everyone by name. When I get older I am looking to be a chef and a mom. I love to cook and make people happy because of the food I make. I have been told that I am good with children, and I love children. With knowing that, I hope to have children and a family in years to come. If someone were debating on sending their child here to DMC they should come and get the advice from me. No one will judge you even if you’re not in the popular group. You won’t be looked down upon because you are with a different troop. The people are nice, and the teachers are wise. For high school I am undecided on where I am going, but the Lord above is always knowing. I trust the Lord will lead me where He wants me to go. 23 Hello my name is Chase R B, and I was born on July 15, 1999. My birth parents are Beth Burke and Rob Boonstra. My siblings include: Ariel, 22, Ashley, 22 and in college, Kaitlin, 20 and in college, and Aubrey, 19 and in college. When I was in seventh grade I did basketball and soccer. I did all sorts of choir concerts, but those were required. Some of the biggest things that I am going to miss are the food, the community, and the teachers. I would tell people who want to go here that this school is great for good Christian people, and they would have a blast. Some advice I would give to the seventh graders is to respect others as you would yourself. Our class verse means to me that even though we are young we still have a responsibility to guide others in Christianity. I will probably be going to Covenant for high school next year. Maybe I will participate in some activity next year but I’m not sure. I am an artist so I might get into that for money when I’m older, or I’ll probably get a union job. I feel that the Lord has moved me in my life by getting me into a Christian school, and that is an amazing blessing. Hello! I am Morgan L B, and I was born on the nice fall day of September 26, 2000. My parents are Dan and Julie Brodner. My dad owns Brodner Roofing and is a roofer, and my mom works for Fase’s Water Treatment as an office manager. I have 3 other siblings; Taylor is 22 and a senior at Purdue University, Jordan is 19 and a freshman at Purdue North Central, and Bryce is 11 and in 6 th grade at KVMS. I have been at DMC since 7th grade, and I’ve enjoyed my time here. In 7th grade I was involved in volleyball and The Music Man Jr. In 8th grade I was involved in volleyball and basketball. The things I will miss the most are my friends that are going to a different school, the small classroom atmosphere, and all the friendly people. Our class verse is I Timothy 4:12. To me it means that even though I am still young, I can be a very good example to older and younger people in everything I do and say. I will be attending Kankakee Valley High School in the fall. I am very nervous and excited. I hope to be involved in volleyball and swimming. On a cool, windy day November 29, 2000, a wonderful girl was born. Her name was Lindsey M B, and if you were wondering, that is me. My dad is Don Bultema, and he is an owner/operator truck driver. My mom is Barb Bultema, and she works at Great Lakes Orthopedics. I have two older brothers named Joe and Tim. Joe is 20 and a roofer, and Tim is 17 and is a junior in high school at Covenant Christian. He also works at Topline Trucking. The activities I have been involved in at DMC are volleyball in 8 th grade, and in 7th grade I was a townsperson and a little girl for the musical called Music Man Jr. I am really going to miss DMC and the moments that as a class we have made each other act like a whole bunch of turkeys with their heads cut off. I also am really going to Mrs. Tazelaar, our cook who makes wonderful lunches for us every day. If someone is inquiring to come to DMC I would tell them that it is a Christian centered atmosphere and they will feel welcomed here. The advice I have for the upcoming 7 th graders is to always get your homework done on time because the teachers will be able to trust you to be an honest student. The teachers will also be nice to you. My class verse is 1 Timothy 4:12 which says “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in, love, in faith, and in purity.” This passage means to me that I should set an example for the little ones that are below me in school. I should not be looked down by older people because I am still young, but I need to show them that I am a believer and that I represent God well in my speech, in my life, in love, in my faith for Jesus and in purity. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School, and I hope to be involved with volleyball the musicals and plays. I would like to go to college to be an interior designer, and I feel that God is leading me in this direction. 24 On August 29, 2001, the third child was born to Daniel and Marilyn DeBoer. Grace M DB was the baby’s name, and that was me. Daniel is a mechanic at Megara Diesel Engineering, while Marilyn works on a computer at home for a hospital while also being a stay at home mother. I have 4 siblings in all; two older and two younger. My oldest brother is Jacob. He is 18, a senior at Covenant Christian High School and will be graduating this year. Next is Nicki, who is 16 and also goes to Covenant but is only a sophomore going to be a junior. Then there is me. I am 13 and will be going to Covenant Christian along with my sister. My younger siblings are Melanie and Benjamin. Melanie, now 4, is in Preschool here at DMC and enjoys every day. Finally there is Benjamin, who is not in school because he is only 2. At DMC I have been in basketball and track for 3 years. I was in volleyball in 7 th and soccer in th 8 . I have been in band for 4 years, and I have been in ISSMA singing ensembles. In 7th grade I was in the musical Music Man Jr., and played the role of the governor’s youngest daughter. For the 7th graders or any Jr. high student, I will tell them to have fun, be loose, and get involved. Be friends with people from other grades and don’t be afraid to be yourself. I will miss interacting with these other classmates. I will also miss Mrs. Tazalaar’s hot lunch and yummy cooking, but I am excited for high school. As we leave, our 8th grade class has chosen I Timothy 4:12 as our class verse. It says “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” It is not to be focused on the first part although it is a comfort to young believers, but I think we should focus on the last part. Just because I am young does not mean that others do not look at me for an example. I may set an example for many and not even know it. It also shows that we should strive to be like Jesus because we are setting examples for others. I think this verse will stick with me a long time. In the future I will attend CCHS and be involved in basketball, soccer, and maybe some plays and musicals. I am not sure what I hope to become, but I want to follow God’s plan for the future. I will put my trust in Him in whatever He has planned for me. Aloha! The wonderful day that I was born on was May 4, 2001. For your information, I am Elizabeth G E. My parents are Jeff and Patty Eenigenburg. My dad works at ICS, and my mom is a clerk at Jasper County Library. I have 3 amazing siblings. My siblings’ names are Emily, she is 20 and is studying nursing, Elyse, she is 13 and is in 8th grade too (she is my twin), and last but not least Grant, he is 7, in 1st grade, and is very wild. I have been at DMC since preschool. I have been in a couple sports. I was in basketball in 6 th grade and the manager in 8th grade. I was in volleyball in 7th and 8th grade. I was a townswomen and a pick-a-little lady in The Music Man Jr. in 7th grade. There is one specific thing that I will always miss: Mrs.Tazelaar and her cooking. Our class verse this year is I Timothy 4:12. This verse is very encouraging to me because it tells young people to be examples to believers in what they do. It also says that I should not have anyone look down on me because I am young. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School. I hope to be involved in the musicals and plays. I hope to play volleyball in the fall at CCHS. Hopefully you know more about me so… Adios! Hello! On the warm day of May 4, 2001, Jeffrey and Patricia Eenigenburg received two lovely twin daughters, Elizabeth and Elyse. I’m Elyse J E, and just for your information I am the younger twin by two minutes. My dad, Jeff, works at ICS, Industrial Commercial Services, as a salesman in Thornton, IL. My mom, Patty, is a stay-at-home mom, but she also works as a clerk for the Jasper County Public Library. I also have two siblings, other than my dear twin Elizabeth. There is Emily, my older sister, who graduated from DMC when I was in first grade. She is 20-years-old and is a college student studying and majoring in nursing. Then there is the rambunctious, unforgettable miracle, named Grant. He is in first grade here at DMC and just turned 7-years-old. I have been involved in multiple things here in my years at DMC. In 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade I have been in band playing the flute. All through Junior High I’ve been in choir. In 6 th grade I tried track, did basketball, and participated in a mixed vocal ensemble for ISSMA. In 7th grade I did volleyball and basketball, participated in a mixed vocal ensemble for ISSMA, and was a pick-a-little lady in The Music Man Jr. This year I am in Student Council as the secretary. I also did volleyball, basketball, chapel committee, a flute ensemble, a mixed vocal ensemble, and a girls’ vocal ensemble all for ISSMA. I love DMC, and there are many things that I will miss. First and foremost are the hot lunches we eat from Mrs. Tazelaar. She puts a lot of effort into them, and I will miss that. I will also miss the teachers and friends I have made here at DMC. Some will be leaving and that’s hard, but I know that I will still be able to see everyone every once in a while. Our class verse is I Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” I am glad that this 25 verse was chosen because it’s something to look back on and continually look at through my high school years. It shows that even though I may be looked down upon because of my faith by others or even other believers, I must set a good example in every way that I can for others. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School next year. I hope to be in some activities at Covenant like volleyball, the plays and musicals, and possibly basketball. I don’t know what the Lord is calling me to do, but whatever the task, I am eager to take it up and glorify the Lord in whatever I do. I, Elise N E was born on October 20, 2000, to Scott and Tia Eriks. My dad works with sheet metal at Sheet Metal Services in Highland, IN. My mom is a housekeeper for many people. I have only one sibling, Emily, and she is in 7th grade here at DeMotte Christian School. I first came to DeMotte Christian in 5th grade. During my first year I started playing the clarinet in Band. When I started Junior High, I continued playing in Band, and I also did track, and participated in ISSMA with an ensemble. In 7th grade I also played the clarinet in 7th and 8th Band, ran track, played volleyball, and took part in another ISSMA ensemble. This year I played volleyball, and sang with a small choir for chapels. A few things I will miss about DeMotte Christian are some of my friends who will be attending Kankakee Valley High School, and also, of course, Mrs. Tazelaar’s lunches. If someone were inquiring about DeMotte Christian School I would tell them they should definitely attend because you receive a benefiting education, and the teachers are very kind-hearted and generous. My advice for the upcoming eighth graders is that you should be respectful to those in your class because mostly all of your friends will be going to the same high school. Also, you should be a friend to those in a lower grade than you because at some point they will be attending your high school, and it is beneficial to have more friends from lower grades because they will be with you in high school. Our class verse is from I Timothy 4:12, and it says that you shouldn’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but you should set an example and attitude like of Christ would. I believe that this verse means that I should use kind words, love, and confident acts of faith like Christ would. So, we need to put on the full armor of God, and stand up for what we believe. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School, and I will play volleyball. Later after high school, I aspire to attend Purdue University, and become an Ultrasound Technician, or possibly a teacher. Right now, I have no idea really, but the Lord will lead me, maybe even to something I have never even considered. My name is Daniel J F, and I was born March 20, 2001. My parents are Craig and Valerie Finch. My dad specializes in the safety field, and my mom is a receptionist at Bosak Motors and the Cheer coach at Covenant Christian High School. I have a brother, Shane Michael Finch, who's ten and in the fourth grade. Some things I will miss about DMC are my teachers and the staff members. If someone inquired about DMC I would tell them the teachers are nice, I enjoy the freedom to learn about God, and it's a small school so you really get to know your classmates. For seventh graders I would strongly advise that you do your homework on time. The class verse means to me that I am important to God no matter what my age. I am always an example of the Christian life, even if I don't always act like it. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. I am hoping to be involved in Track, Cross Country, and the Cheer Team as a lifter. I would also like to be part of the plays, maybe doing sound or lighting. I’d also like to take more choir lessons with Mrs. Funderburg. I hope to become an engineer, but I haven't narrowed down my specialty yet. I'd also like to major in computer programming. I’m thinking of possibly a double major at Purdue University. I have considered structural engineering and computers to improve America's infrastructure. I feel that the Lord is leading me into a career of engineering. I also hope to be a great husband and dad someday. I’d also like to volunteer with the church that I am involved in, maybe in the sound or music ministry. 26 Hello, my name is Ashley J F. My birthday is July 27, 2000. My parents’ names are Brian and Devin Flores. My dad is a safety man at the Arcelormittal steel mill in East Chicago. My mom is a 3 rd grade teacher at 7 Creeks Elementary School in Lowell. I have no siblings; I am an only child. In 8 th grade I played basketball and soccer. I have only been here at DMC for my 8th grade year. One thing I’m going to miss is some of my friends that are going to a different school then I am. I’m also going to miss the Christian atmosphere and Mr. Brinks because he is a pretty cool principal. Some good things I would say about DMC are the teachers. They are always there for you if you need help with something. Also, that there are fewer classmates than in a public school. I went to public school K-7th grade; there are a lot of people there, and it’s always hard to find good education when there are so many students. Another good thing about DMC is the Christian atmosphere. Since I’ve been in public school most of my life, I really didn’t have a close connection with God. I did go to church, but it was hard to learn and focus. My advice to the 7th graders is to be focused in all the classes because you can learn a lot of new things, I know I did. Also, I would advise them to really get the concept of Mr. Vander Molen’s teachings in Bible because it really turned my faith around in a good way. He is a great Bible teacher, and you 7th graders should really focus in Bible because it can help you get closer to God. My class Bible verse means to me that no matter what age, you can always set a good example for other people to follow. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School next year. Some activities that I would like to be in are softball, basketball, soccer, drama, and many other things that I really don’t know yet. I hope to become a marine biologist, but if that doesn’t work then I want to be a college softball player/ softball coach or a teacher. I really don’t know what the Lord is leading me into, but I think that He wants me to do something that deals with animals or education but the time will come when God will show a path for me. Hello, my name is Alex H. I was born on November 16, 2000. My loving parents are Renee and Kevin Huseman. My father worked and owned his own business years ago at Point Imagining; that company is now sold, and he works and owns Kingdom Housing. My family tree is very large and stretches from many places. I am one sibling out of nine, having 3 sisters: Liza is 16, Amya is 2, and Madison is 3. And I have five brothers: Brandon is 30, Cody is 27, Roman is 22, Ethan is 19, and Decavon is 4. Seven of us are adopted, I was adopted from Vladivostok, Russia, and my older brother Roman and my older sister Liza are my biological brother and sister from Russia. My older brother Ethan is from Moscow, Russia. Amya, Madison and Decavon are also adopted. We adopted Amya first then Madison. We fostered Decavon and he went back to the adoption home, but when he came back we were asked if we wanted to adopt him, so we did. My brother Cody was in the military. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He now lives in Saint Louis, Missouri, and is a police patrol officer. The oldest us is my brother Brandon. When I was in 5th grade my brother Brandon died in Crown Point from a fatal stabbing on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving I have only been at DMC for this 8th grade year, but in this year I played for the soccer team and track team. One thing I will miss at this school is the amount of academic help students give to each other. In 9th hour study halls, I have always noticed students helping other students solve a problem they both have, whether in Math, English, Science or whatever. I know that that couldn’t be found in any other school like it is here. The second thing I will miss is the lunches. I guarantee all of the 8th graders will miss that. If a person were to ask me about DMC and if I would recommend them going there I would tell them that they should. If you were to come here you would find yourself in a very friendly place. As for the 8th graders for the coming year and them being the oldest students in the school they aren't as big and tough as they think they are going to be for the next year. I would have to say to them that they are being looked up to and the younger students are terrified of them because they are taller, much taller. But when you as a 8th grader do something where you should behave and you don’t, then the younger students will think that it is ok for you to do that when it isn't, and they get in trouble just like you did. So, future 8th graders, know that you are looked up to by all the lower grades. You being the “big shots”, your year will not be any more special. It is true 8th grade will have some better things in it, but it goes by just like any other year. Just look ahead; you'll be a freshman and back down to the bottom. The class verse that we 8th grade students have all picked is 1st Timothy 4:12. Each person reads this verse and will have different thoughts on it. This verse doesn't hit me hard personally but I can reflect on it. When it talks about looking down on my youth I don't think about my age being looked down on, I see more of my faith looked down on and how people will look at my faith and say that I couldn't understand things about being a Christian and how I don't know enough about God. But I can and do know about Christ’s story. The best ways to show that is in my speech, by my conduct, by my faith, by my love, by my purity. If I do that, people will see that I’m capable. 27 Hello, my name is Hannah G K. I was born on June 29 of 2000. I have 9 siblings: 4 brothers and 5 sisters to be exact, although 5 of us are adopted and that would include me. I was adopted before I turned one to the lovely parents who go by the name Steve and Brenda Kopka. My mother is a worker at Help At Home, which works with special children/ or adults. My father works as a delivery man over in Hebron; he delivers bread to many schools. Now for my siblings: I have an older brother which many people know, his name is Adam. We look a lot alike (well that is what everyone keeps telling us); we have the same face, are both athletic and do many of the same things. You might say he my best friend. He is a freshman at Covenant Christian High School. I have 2 younger brothers, one named Nathan and one named Ben. Nathan is homeschooled and is in 6th grade; Ben is 2, almost 3 and is too young for school. And now for my sisters, I have one younger sister, Chrissa who is 10, also goes to DMC, and is in 4th grade. And I have 3 adult sisters and 1 adult brother they are between 27-30. One thing I will miss is Mrs. Tazelaar. She is so nice and tries to make people happy. She knows all of her students by name. I will also miss her cooking, it was the best. I was in the school musical Music Man Jr. I was the make-up person and the costume person--I kept track of where the costumes were and made sure everything went well backstage. I think that if someone was thinking about sending their child to this school I would tell them that this school has an amazing Christian environment, and that I would encourage them to send their children to this school. Some advice I for the upcoming 8th graders is don’t think you’re better than everyone because in reality you are not, and to have a positive attitude because if you don’t you are going to have a horrible year. I will be going to Covenant for high school. I hope to be in basketball, soccer, and softball. I don’t know what I want to be when grow up, I want to do something with hair but I will do whatever God wants me to. I am not sure where God is leading me in my life, but I know He will do what is right. Our class verse for this year is II Timothy 4:7. This passage is a good passage because it says that I shouldn’t think that I am better than people because God made us all equal. Now there are some things that God gave us that aren’t the same, but we shouldn’t go walking around flaunting it. I was born December 16, 2000, in Gary. After spending a day in a foster home, I was adopted by my parents, Mike and Michele Martin. That is when they named me Mykena M M. My father has been a pipefitter for many different companies. Right now he is working for Zone. My mother works for herself; she cleans people’s houses and sometimes babysits. She is also a Kidz Klub coordinator. I have one sister, Shannon who is a junior at Covenant. She is 16 years old and likes to be right all the time. I came to DMC in 7th grade after being at Crown Point Christian School from pre-k to 6th. In seventh grade I played volleyball, and I was also a town’s person in the musical The Music Man Jr. In 8th grade I played volleyball and track. I also helped lead singing in chapel along with being in two 8 th grade ensembles for ISSMA. I know I will miss all the great hot lunches every day. I will also miss the jokes that we have made with all of the teachers and the videos we watched at lunch. DMC is a place where you can be yourself and not get judged by the other students. They make you feel like you are part a one big family. If you are going to be an 8th grader next year, you do not want to be sick for too long, because that will be the days you get the most homework. If you don’t want to eat last for lunch take all your books with you. If you don’t, the whole class eats last for lunch and people will not be happy with you. Also, have fun. It is ok to goof off sometimes, but you just have to know when and when not to. Even if you don’t have a lot of homework planned for the week, get as many things done as early as possible. I Timothy 4:12 for me says that even if I am young I can still show people the way. Even if there are people older than me I can show them that there is something different about me. They might see something in me that they want to have in themselves. I can do this by the way I speak; speak with respect and do not curse. By the way I live my life that means that I dress according to the Bible and act the way a Christian would. That means to set an example for those younger than me and to love them no matter what because they are God’s people as well. I have to be strong in my faith and to keep making it stronger as my life journey continues, to make myself pure and humble in God’s eye and in my own eyes. I am planning to go to Covenant Christian High School (CCHS). There I will be playing volleyball and softball along with cheerleading. I hope to be in all the plays and musicals and to join shop class and art class. My plan after high school is to study to become a Marine Biologist. For now this is my number one passionate goal, but that might change with God’s plan. 28 On March 5, 2001, I was born to my parents, Dawn and Randy Peterson. My name is Sydney R P. I have two brothers named Reece and Jake. Reece is a freshman at Covenant Christian High School, and Jake is a 6th grader here at Demotte Christian. My mom is a registered nurse at Dr. Tim and Lisa Mullally’s doctor’s office in Crown Point, but she recently got promoted to be the office manager. My dad is a civil engineer and works for a company in Portage called Abonmarche. In my years at DMC I have been involved in many activities. In 5th grade I was involved in the Faith Hall of Fame play and I played Queen Esther, and I also was involved band. In 6th grade I played basketball and track, and I was involved in ISSMA and band. In 7th grade I played volleyball, basketball, continued band and ISSMA and was a townsperson in the musical, Music Man Jr. Finally, in 8th grade, I decided to switch things up a little and played soccer, basketball, and was involved in ISSMA. Although I am looking forward to high school, there are a few things I will miss about DMC. One of the biggest things I will miss is the fun relationship I have developed with many of the teachers. I admit, at the beginning of 6th grade I had no clue how I was going to survive 3 years with the same teachers, but now that it has been 3 years, I feel very blessed to know each one of them better. I will also miss traveling to different schools for sports. A lot of us have made Christian friends from other schools, which I highly suggest for other students because you can become very close with them, even if they are the “enemy” school. I assume I’m not the only one who will miss Mrs. Tazelaar’s delicious lunches and some close friends who are going to a different high school than I am. If someone were thinking about sending their child to DMC I would tell them that their children will grow a lot in their faith and will have a lot of questions to ask about their faith. They will love the Christian atmosphere that DMC has. Also, DMC is very welcoming to new students, which I personally love. If there is any advice I have for the 7th graders, I would tell them to always wake up and come to school with a good attitude and be open to new things that come your way. If you come to school with a bad attitude, you will have a bad day. Also, do not be afraid to make new friends, because at this age, everyone is still trying to figure out who their friends are, and it is good to get to know more people. The passage we chose for next year is I Timothy 4:12. To me, this passage requires me to set an example for those who look down on me for being young. There are so many adults in the world that believe that teenagers cannot have a strong faith in God, but this passage says it all. It is definitely harder to have strong faith in God at my age because of the distractions going on around me. But, it is not impossible, as long as I set my heart to be faithful to God. It is my duty to set an example for believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School next year. I hope to be involved in soccer, possibly basketball, ISSMA and the musical. I do not know what I would like to become right now, but I’ve always been interested in the medical field. I have trust that God will lead me to a successful life that honors and glorifies Him in everything I do, and I am excited to see how the rest of the story unfolds. On November 10, 2000, I, Racquel K P, was born to Cami and Steve Pribyl. My mom works at the Wiers Dealership in town and is part owner. My dad is a lawyer at Langer and Langer Attorney’s office in Valparaiso. They are both very driven people and work hard to get everything done. Speaking of hard workers, I have one sibling named Colton. He is currently ten and in fourth grade. He is very focused on school and sports, especially baseball. He plays on the 10U team for Morris Baseball. These past years at DMC have flown by. I have been in band ever since fifth grade, and I am finally in my last year. In sixth and seventh grade I participated in basketball, and by eighth grade my parents finally realized it truly was not meant for me, even though I tried to tell them both years I participated. In both seventh and eighth grade I was part of the volleyball team. I have been involved in vocal ISSMA ever since sixth grade. Finally, in eighth grade I gained the courage to perform a vocal solo in ISSMA. I also participated in the school musical The Music Man last year. There are a few things that I will miss when I leave this school such as my friends that will not be coming to the same school next year and Mrs. Tazelaar’s amazing meals. Some advice that I have for the upcoming eighth graders is that the time really does fly by so make sure you make the most of your last year and don’t get worked up about the small things. Our class verse is I Timothy 4:12. This passage reminds me that even though people may disagree or look down on you because of your age, as long as you are living your life out as a good follower of Jesus and doing your best to set an example for other believers, that is all you can do. So do not worry what others have to say. I will be attending KV high school next year. I hope to be part of the swim team and possibly play volleyball. At this point of my life I am not fully sure what I want to pursue as a career, but I know that God has a plan for me and will take care of me whatever the case is. 29 Hello there! My name is Reagan J R, the son of Steve and Patti Ryken. I was born on April 12, 2001. My dad works on trucks at CAT’s trucking outlet in Hammond, Indiana. My mom works as a nurse at Saint Anthony’s hospital in Crown Point, Indiana. I also have two sisters, Tana and Erin. Tana is 18 and a senior at Covenant Christian High School (CCHS). She plans to head off to Purdue next year. Erin is 16 and a sophomore at CCHS. They are both involved in plays and musicals. I, too, plan to head off to CCHS next year to start the next chapter in my life. I have been involved in a few different things in my past three years at DMC. In 6 th grade you only are able to play basketball and track, and I was involved in both of them. I also was in Student Council. In band I played the baritone and did four different events in ISSMA. I did a singing solo, baritone solo, piano solo, and a singing ensemble. Later, in 7th grade, I did most of the same things, but I was not in Student Council. I also played volleyball which is my favorite sport. It was also the year that we did the musical, Music Man. It was a blast. I played the role of a school board member. It was my main highlight of 7th grade. Finally, in 8th grade, I played all the sports but soccer. I also helped with some of the chapels we had by playing the piano. I enjoyed working on my Ronald Reagan history fair project. The verse we chose for this upcoming year was 1 Timothy 4:12-Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. This is a very important verse to our class because it shows how I would like to leave DMC. I would like to be an example in speech, life, and all of the others. It really shows what our class stands for. There are many things that I will miss when I head off to CCHS. Some of them are Mrs. Tazelaar’s cooking skills, all the teachers, and the good attitude of many of the students. I am also going to miss some of my friends that are not going to CCHS. Late in the night on June 28, 2000, a wonderful baby was born that would change the world forever. This child was named Douglas M S. I was born quite a big baby to great parents who have put up with me my whole life. My parents supported my needs by working at the same family company, B & F Pools. My father, Mark, is one of “The Guys” that goes out to the locations and actually builds the pools, and my mother, Terri, is one of “The Girls” that works in the stores selling chemicals and other items for pools. Along with myself my parents had 2 other children. I have an older brother named Derek who is 17 and is a junior at Kankakee Valley High School and a younger sister named Grace who is 10 and a 4th grader here at DMC. At DMC I have participated in every sport available which includes basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track. In 6th grade I was in the class ISSMA ensemble. In 7th grade I participated in cross country. Up until 8th grade, I played percussion in band. Near the end of my 7th grade year I also was in the musical, The Music Man, as the conductor, and in 7th and 8th grade I went to the Math Triathlon. The thing I will miss most about DMC is that our classes were small enough for the teachers to get to know us personally and be able to laugh with all of us. Our class verse, I Timothy 4:12, means to me that we young believers should be setting an example in public, to both believers and unbelievers, in a way that is respectful and shows that we are Christians. After I graduate from DMC I will be attending Kankakee Valley High School. Hello my name is Grace R A S. I was born on April 2, 2000, so that means right now I’m 15. I’ve only been here since seventh grade. I have not done any sports, but I did band in seventh grade for half of the year. One thing I’m going to miss about DMC is all the friends I made here in younger grades. The second thing I am going to miss about DMC is how all the teachers are here to help you, not just with school subjects but about life in general. Some advice I give the seventh graders is to do your homework on time, study, and don’t do something to interrupt the class or back talk the teachers because if you do, you’ll be in trouble. But the most important thing is when it’s time to do history fair do not procrastinate because if you do, well I suggest not doing it. My mother’s name is Laura Plikuhn and she is a cosmetologist. She is married to my stepdad David Plikuhn who works at Shilling. My father’s name is Frank Silva, and he works at Roadway. He is married to my stepmom, Michelle Silva, who is an accountant. My oldest brothers are Christian Lemming, who works on houses and Christopher Ives; they both are 21. My next sibling is Timothy Silva, who is currently in tenth grade right now and is 17. Then there’s Caitlin Ives. She is at Ivy Tech right now and is 19 old. Elizabeth Plikuhn is a first grader here at DMC; she is seven years old. Alyssa Silva is a second grader, and she is eight. If someone came up to me and asked me about DMC I would say this school is a really good Christian place where they care for you and your family and they are willing to help out. My class verse is I Timothy 4:12. Don’t let anyone look down at you because you are younger, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. I feel like I 30 relate to this because I am small and a lot of people mock me for it, but I feel like it is saying don’t let anyone put you down for who you are. Also, we need to set an example for the younger children on how they should act around people, being themselves, not acting like someone they are not. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. I really hope I will be able to do the musicals there or even basketball and volleyball. I really want to be a singer or even an actress, but I know those are dreams. I think maybe God would want me to be a lawyer or a nurse for little children because I love little babies. On June 13, 2001, Timothy and Laurel gave birth to their last and favorite child, Abigail F S. That’s me! I have 3 siblings, 2 brothers and 1 sister. My oldest brother is Derek, 24. He is out of college and works at De Motte State Bank. My sister Kaitlyn, 21, is currently not in college but works at De Boer Family Eye Care. My other brother Cody, 17, is a Junior at CCHS. My dad works at Marcolin, and my mother also works at De Boer Family Eye Care. Activities that I have been involved in at DMC are band all 4 years, ISSMA all 4 years, volleyball in both 7th and 8th grade, the musical last year, and Student Council last year. A couple things that I will miss about DMC are the great cooking, the fun quarrels with most of the teachers, and the fun atmosphere the school has. If someone were inquiring about DMC, I would tell them that DMC is a great place to go because the teachers are so helpful, and they just really want to help you. Also, that even if there are new students, the old students make friends quickly with them, so they shouldn’t worry. For the 7th graders, I would tell them that don’t worry too much. Have fun and make sure you do your homework. Also, stay on the teacher’s good side, but make sure you have a few things to disagree on with them. The year goes by way too fast, make sure that you have the right friends but also have the right attitude. Never get too mad, or sad, and don’t worry too much about anything. My class verse means a lot to me. This year’s class verse is from 1 Timothy 4:12, and it says “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” We cannot let anyone look down on us. We may be young, but that gives us all the more reason to show the world how we are and how we act, and that we are bearers of Christ and His work. We act on His behalf. We must set the example and be the light to the world. For high school, I will be going to Covenant Christian School. That is where my brother Cody goes. I hope to be involved in the plays and musicals, volleyball, maybe basketball, and hopefully track. I’m also thinking about running for student council and getting in some clubs. I don’t know all the clubs that I want to get into, though. I hope to become a teacher, or maybe a sales rep, or maybe even be a lawyer when I’m older. I might work in the family business, but I don’t really know. From this point in time, I don’t really know where God is calling me. I just now that wherever God does put me, He knows exactly why, and He will keep my safe. 14 years ago, there was a boy that was born on September 12, 2000. He was born to John and Shauna Thomas. That boy’s name was Zachary J T and is me. My dad owns Horizons Research, an insurance agency that specializes in custom employee health plans. My mom owns Hostcare Resources, which works with employers in offering medical travel options to their employees. My one sister, Reegan, is currently in 5th grade and will be attending DMC as a 6th grade next year. In my 3 years of Jr. High at DMC I participated in many activities. In 6 th grade, I was in basketball, ISSMA ensemble, track, and band playing the flute. In 7th grade I was in basketball, track, ISSMA ensemble and solo, volleyball, and band, again. This year I have participated in soccer, basketball, ISSMA ensemble, volleyball, track, and band, where I changed to the tenor saxophone. I will miss many things from DMC but one of the greatest is the teachers. They always tried to help me and were always on my side. Another thing I will miss is the sports with the great coaches we had. The class verse that was chosen this year is 1 Timothy 4:12. I found this passage to be perfect for the future classes because it shows them to not let people look down on you and to show them an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. My advice to future 6th, 7th, and 8th graders would be two things. First of all, if you don’t act cool, you look cool. And also, all the teachers are trying to help you, so don’t get mad at them! I will be attending Covenant Christian High School next year. I hope to be involved with the plays and musicals, band, some clubs, and track. 31 Rhonda and Marv Toppen welcomed me, their second daughter, on April 17, 2001. My mom had been on a medical leave from her job as a 5th grade teacher, and my dad had been doing construction work for Toppen Inc. and now owns the company. Brea cried the day my parents named me Aubrey R T, because I had not been named Ariel. Brea is now 17-years old and is a junior at Kankakee Valley High School. Crying when siblings are born must be in the family, because when my younger sister Lilly was born I cried because she wasn’t named Crystal. Lilly is now 10 years old and is in 4th grade here at DMC. Since I’ve been in Jr. High here at DMC I’ve done lots of things. In 6 th grade I was in band (percussion) and participated in ISSMA, I played basketball, ran track, and I was even part of the cross country team, placing 6th at our one and only meet. I was also elected to be in Student Council. Then in 7th grade I was in band again, and again I participated in ISSMA, and I also played Maud Dunlap in our spring musical of The Music Man Jr. In 7th grade I participated in basketball, track, soccer, and cross country. I was elected into Student Council again too. This year I’ll be finishing up in band, and I also participated in ISSMA for the last time. A new thing I got to do this year was sing a solo at the Christmas program, and that was something that I never even saw myself doing in 6 th grade. I also chose to play the drums for chapel committee, something I had always looked forward to when I was growing up in school. This year I ran again for Student Council and I made it in, so then it was decided I would be president of our Student Council. This year was my last year in sports at DMC, and I participated in soccer, basketball, and track, but I opted out of Cross Country because of soccer and a sore knee. Next year I plan on going to Kankakee Valley High school, and I hope to participate in soccer, basketball, and either track or tennis. I also hope to participate in the Best Buddies program, do yearbook and publications, and also, eventually, be a freshmen mentor to upcoming freshmen. I Timothy 4:12 will really follow me into high school next year, because I know that going to a public school not everyone will have the same ideas and beliefs I do, so I need to be a strong example to show I am different by the way I lead my life and how I act and talk. When I am finished with high school I hope to do something with creative writing or in the medical field, but who knows what God’s plans for me are, right? If I were going to give any Jr. High student some advice, it would be don’t talk, and don’t listen. Don’t talk about people behind their backs, because what comes around goes around, and also it can break relationships that can lead to lots of drama which is never fun. Don’t listen to what other people have to say about anyone else or yourself. Most of the time if someone is talking about someone else it will be to your best interest to stay out of it, and if someone is telling you something negative about yourself, don’t listen because they are probably jealous or just being flat out mean. Always remember God made you just right, and he doesn’t make mistakes. Russell and Marla Vander Molen were filled with joy on April 17, 2001. Their third baby had just been born. Cameron D VM was the name they had decided on. Yes, that is me. My dad has been a mechanic for many years currently employed at Schepel Buick GMC. My mom is a teacher here at DMC. I am the youngest of three children. My older sister, who is 19, is currently attending Anderson University studying music education. My older brother, who is 16, is a junior at Covenant Christian High school. I was able to be a part of many extra-curricular activities here at DMC. In 6th grade I was in Band and played trombone and halfway through the year I switched to percussion. I also played basketball and did track. In 7th grade I played percussion in Band and did soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track. I was also a member of Student Council. Through 8th grade I played percussion in Band. I did soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track. I also had the privilege of being Student Council Vice President/treasurer. Some things that I will miss are Mrs. Tazelaar’s hot lunches. They were always a highlight of my day. I will also miss how the teachers are actively involved in helping in every way possible. My advice for the upcoming 8th graders is take advantage of the amazing hot lunches you are offered, because most likely you will not find a school with hot lunch every school day that will compare with Mrs. Tazelaar’s. I plan on going to Covenant Christian High School. I hope to be involved in soccer and basketball for sure, and maybe baseball. I look forward to taking part in choir and possibly the musicals. The verse that my class picked out this year to be our departing verse is 1 Timothy 4:12. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. I think this verse is especially important because I do not have to wait until I am older to live out these characteristics. I should be an example to not only those who are younger than me but also to those who are older than me. It is my hope that if anyone were to look at me they would be able to see these characteristics in me. 32 Clouds can ruin anyone’s day. But, on June 5, 2001, those clouds parted as the sun shone brightly and the people rejoiced. For in Sioux Center, IA, a little boy named Mason C V M had been born. He was born to Russ and Mary Vander Molen. Russ was working at Diamond Vogel Painting and Mary at a daycare center. This small child was me. For about a month, I lived in Sioux Center. Then, I moved to Demotte. I am now 13, and have 2 sisters, Josie and Tessa. Josie is 12 and in 6th grade, and Tessa is 9 and in 4th grade. My dad is a teacher here at DMC, and my mom is a paraprofessional here at DMC. There are many things I’ve done here at DMC. In 5th grade, I was in Spell Bowl. In 6th grade, I was in basketball, ISSMA, Spell Bowl, and on Student Council. In 7 th grade, I was in soccer, volleyball, track, basketball, ISSMA and Spell Bowl. This year, I was in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and ISSMA. In 8th grade there was no Spell Bowl, which was a great disappointment because it was really awesome. As I move on from DMC, I will miss the awesome lunches Mrs. Tazelaar makes for us every day, and a few other things as well. If someone asked me about DMC, I would tell them about the teachers and the awesome lunches. Next year, I am going to Covenant Christian High School and while there hope to be in soccer, baseball, and a few other things. In the future after high school, I don’t know what will become of me, but I pray that it’s good. Though as I depart, I will make sure to remember our class verse, I Timothy 4:12, and to follow its instructions throughout my life. I will set examples for others in every way I can. This will be a good reminder for me in life. Once upon a time, on May 4, 2001, a woman named Laura Vander Tuin and her husband Elton Vander Tuin welcomed their new (and favorite) son Ethan V T into the world. I am Ethan, My mother has a job as book keeper at Belstra Trucking, and my father works as a Pharmacist at Valparaiso Professionals Pharmacy. In the Vander Tuin family, I am the only boy, and I have three sisters. Alex is the oldest (21) and is studying at Purdue University. Sydney is 19 and is studying at Purdue as well, and last but not least, Mackenna who is a junior at Covenant Christian High School and is 16 years of age. At DeMotte Christian School I have been known not to involve myself in activities, which doesn’t mean I haven’t done any. In sixth grade I did basketball and then in seventh grade I helped backstage in the musical and also did soccer. One of the major things I’ll miss when I leave DMC is Mrs. Tazelaar’s beautiful hot lunches. One of the best things at DMC (besides the hot lunches) is the Christian atmosphere. I would have to say to the future 8th graders that just because you are graduating it does not mean you cannot do your homework, if you have four weekly assignments due on Friday get them done before Thursday. Next year I will be attending Covenant Christian High School like all my other siblings. I am not sure what activities I hope to be a part of. This year my class has chosen the verse 1 Timothy 4:12. In the verse it says that if somebody looks down on me because I am young or not experienced, I should set an example through the way I talk, the way I live my life, and I should show love, faith, and purity. In about four years I will be making one of the biggest choices of my life, what I want to do with the rest of my life. At home I have a lot of free time so I have done many hours of research on the career I want to pursue. I have narrowed it down to either a job in digital media or something to do with business. For now I’ll just graduate eighth grade. My name is Jacob R W. I was born on March 2, 2001; I am usually referred to my family as the “blast off boy” since I was born on 3/2/1. My parents’ names are Karen Wright and Lynn Wright. My dad works at RUAN, a milk transportation company; my dad is in Arizona getting a house there so he does not work at Fair Oaks in Indiana; my mom is unemployed at the moment. I have 4 brothers. My oldest brother is Chris; he is 26 years, but I’m old not sure where he works. Next is Logan, who is 16 and in 11th grade. Then comes me and finally Joshua, who is 9 years old and in 2nd grade at DMC. The activities I have been involved in are basketball and soccer. The things I will miss are my friends and the Christian theme of the school. The good things I will tell others about the school is that it is a friendly environment for students to learn in where they will learn more about God and that the school is a fun place to attend. The advice for the 7 th graders when they get to 8t h grade is don’t get so many detentions. The class verse means to me that I should not let people look down on me for age or anything but show them love, purity, speech, life, and faith. The question to where I will be going for next year is unknown because I might be going to Arizona in the summer, but my dad is not sure what high school I will be going to if it is here or in Arizona. The activities I would love to be involved in are football and soccer. What I hope to become is a Marine or a Sniper in the military because this has been my passion since I was 9. Chris Kyle inspired me to become a marine so basically he is my inspiration. So after high school, or after I turn 21, I will go and sign up to serve my country. I think the Lord is leading me to go this way to help serve my country and while I am deployed, I can also preach about God to the young people, adults, and the marines, too. 33 On the hot summer day of June 27, 2000, there was a baby girl born named Amber L W. My mom is Laurie, and she home schools my younger siblings. My dad is Ray, but his real name is Timothy; he works at the steel mill. I have two older siblings: James is 17 and is a junior at Covenant High School, and Alecia is 16 and is sophomore at Covenant. My two younger siblings are Johnathan and Sarah. Johnathan is 12 and in sixth grade. Sarah is 8 and in first grade. My mom home schools both of them. I haven’t been in anything like sports or clubs this year. Something that I will miss about DMC is that the classes are small. If anyone were inquiring about DMC I would tell them that it is a good school that helps the student get stronger in the faith, and it also builds them up for the challenges they will face in their later years in life. I am planning on going to Kankakee Valley High School next year, and I hope to become a marine biologist when I am older. This year the 8th graders chose a class verse from I Timothy 4:12 which says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” This to me doesn’t just mean “Don’t look down on me because I’m young” it is also saying I can’t give others a reason to look down on me. On September 24, 2000, I, Lindsay A Z, was born to my parents Pete and Gayle Zeldenrust. I am the middle child. I have an older sister named Kaitlyn who is going to be 17 and is a junior at Covenant Christian High School. My little sister is Madison who is 11 and is a 5 th grader here at Demotte Christian School. Next year I will have my mom as a teacher because she teaches math at Covenant. My dad is an optimizer and shipping and ordering person at Georgia Pacific Drywall. Through my years here at DMC I have been involved with a quite a few things. 5 th grade was when my business started. I played the clarinet in 5th grade and only 5th grade. Also in 5th grade I played intermural basketball. My 6th grade year I was in ISSMA, basketball, track, and choir. In 7 th grade I was involved in volleyball, basketball, track, choir, and ISSMA. This was the year that our school had a musical. I was a town’s woman in the musical. 8th grade was not as busy as my years before. I was only involved in volleyball, basketball, choir, and the chapel group. Next year as I atte nd Covenant, I will miss some things here at DMC. Like most people, I will miss the delicious hot lunches that Mrs. Tazelaar makes every day. Also, I will miss all the inside jokes I have with the teachers. During high school I am hoping to stay active. I will be playing volleyball, basketball, and softball, and hope to be in the year book club. My final year at DMC has been a great year. There are some key things that upcoming 8 th graders should know. The most important one is even though you are the head of the school, that does not mean you can treat younger students with disrespect. Number two is make the best of this last year at DMC. All your friends may not be going to the same high school as you, so make friends with as many people as possible. This year the class of 2014-2015 has chosen the verse I Timothy 4:12. I like to focus on the second part of the verse and not the first part as much. Just because I am young that does not mean I cannot set examples for people older than me. I have to be an example for all non-believers and believers so that they may either come to know Christ or grow in their faith. I can still have an effect on this world by showing and acting how I am called to live as a Christian. 34 "Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” I Timothy 4:12 35
