CITYVIEWsOCTOBER 9-15, 2014 s LOCALLY OWNED ADVERTISING SECTION Stuffed Olive and Voodoo Lounge are now open After two years of setting the precedent for martini bars in Des Moines, The Standard and Image Nightclub on Court Avenue are now under new management. Barmuda Companies took over both of these properties and gave them major renovations. Both bars opened back up at the end of June with a new style, look and vibe. Now opened back up as The Stuffed Olive (downstairs) and Voodoo Lounge (upstairs), patrons can expect new and exciting changes with similar hints of the past bars. The Stuffed Olive features a full-service tapas menu along with some of the Standard’s favorite dishes. The Stuffed Olive also features one of the largest, award-winning martini menus you’ll find anywhere. “The Voodoo Mist has always been a favorite at the Cedar Falls location as it comes in a VERY large stemmed glass, and fog rises from the drink as it serves two or more people,” said Darin Beck, CEO of Barmuda Companies. The new restaurant/martini bar has an upscale look and feel to it with allnew flooring, custom-made furniture and more. The new Voodoo Lounge upstairs is a little more laid back and offers a full-service bar with a wide selection of top-shelf liquors, craft beers, martinis and specialty drinks. “The upstairs area was never really remodeled since it was Jukebox Saturday Night, so the overhaul upstairs helped make it feel like an entirely new bar,” Beck said. “Voodoo Lounge is a very comfortable space featuring soft furniture and an upscale décor. There will be live DJs on the weekend, but no dance floor. Voodoo is not about dancing; it’s about enjoying the fruits of your labor in a hip and trendy place without all the commotion.” Q 2014 36sCITYVIEWsOCTOBER 9-15, 2014 Tell us what you think. LOCALLY OWNED ADVERTISING SECTION Smokey Row Coffee Owner: Address: Phone: Website: Monte Bennett 1910 Cottage Grove 244-2611 www.smokeyrow.com How many years have you been in business? Smokey Row has been in operation since 1998, with the most recent addition to the family being the location on Cottage Grove, off Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, in October of 2009. What cuisine do you offer? We serve coffee and espresso drinks as one of our main attractions. These are complemented with a line of tea (hot or cold) and other cold drinks, such as soda, juice and bottled cola. We also have a good selection of hard-packed ice cream that we will use to make shakes and malts. We have a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads and soups. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar menu items? We aren’t hard-focused on cutting corners to move more people through or searching for the cheapest solution on every product. We start ourselves higher by having higher quality products than some places use. We also have a process of actually preparing drinks instead of having them come out of a machine already finished. We roast all of our own coffee to ensure that we have a solid base to make our coffee drinks. Why is shopping local important? Smokey Row has always functioned as a meeting place and common ground for any group in the community, from two people, to 20 to hundreds when someone political stops in. Shopping local keeps the community-mind active in a world that continues to push things farther away and make them more impersonal. Our view is to continue to help communities grow by being a place for people to gather. Q coffee. shakes. smoothies. pastries. sandwiches. soups. salads. During the Pumpkin Walk, children will trick-or-treat at stores throughout the district, as well as receive a free pumpkin, courtesy of the Historic Valley Junction Foundation (HVJF). The Pumpkin Walk is free to attend. Families will also be able to sample chili at the third annual Chillin’ in the Junction chili cook-off. Held at the West Des Moines Community Center at 217 5th St., the event also features a raffle of items from Valley Junction stores and bingo games with prizes. New to the Chili Cook-off this year is a kid’s carnival, which will include carnival games, art activities and prizes. The cost for the carnival will be $1 per activity, and the cost to sample chili is $5 per tasting kit. “This is a great event for the whole community to get involved with,” said Jim Miller, executive director of the Historic Valley Junction Foundation. “It’s a great way for stores to give back to their customers, and for families to get to know the district in a fun way.” Applications for chili cookers are still available until all spots are full — however, there are only twenty spots total. Registration forms are available online at http://www.valleyjunction.com/events/event-registration/. Valley Junction is home to more than 150 distinctive stores, restaurants and independent businesses, each with its own historical character. CITYVIEWsOCTOBER 9-15, 2014 s LOCALLY OWNED ADVERTISING SECTION LOCALLY OWNED When one international conglomeration owns nearly every print publication in the Des Moines metro area, that doesn’t leave you with many options. Which is why there’s cityview. We believe that you deserve an alternative to the cut-and-paste variety of “news” that seems less and less to have its finger on the pulse of our community. Unlike the local daily and its dozens of publications, our newspaper is locally owned and operated by people who have roots in Central Iowa and thus know it well — something we feel to be truly important, and that which sets us apart. So to our weekly readers, we’d like to say thanks. We’re proud to be Des Moines’ only alternative. Mickey’s Irish Pub in Waukee has been owned by Andy and Amy Walsh for seven and a half years. They are the third owners of the pub and grill, which has been open just more than 10 years total. They are often asked their affiliation with the other Mickey’s in town. Each pub is independently owned and operated. Andy and Amy have been in the hospitality industry each for 22 years and met while working together at a restaurant in Carroll, their hometown, during high school. They have worked together at six different restaurants, clubs and hotels and learned early on that they make a great team. Amy has always worked the front of the house in various roles and has a bachelor’s degree from UNLV in hotel restaurant management with a catering emphasis. Andy spent the first 13 years in the culinary industry and in the back of the house after completing culinary school and later an entrepreneurship degree. They have spent their time at Mickey’s reviving a business with a troubled past and making a positive mark on the community through various charity events they have hosted. They believe the business can be a great vessel to give back to your community. Andy and Amy have great pride in the staff they have assembled at the pub. In an industry where turnover is high, they like to adopt their employees for the long haul into what they call their little Mickey’s family. Mickey’s locks the doors a couple times a year to throw a staff and regular customer party, or take the family on trips such as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert last year. They choose to put employees first because happy staff means happy customers. Unhappy staff, means no customers. Mickey’s Waukee is well known for many things such as their involvement with the bicycling community and proximity to the Raccoon River Valley Trail. They are a popular watering hole in the summer for bikers, and many will enjoy a fresh pint of Guinness. Mickey’s Waukee poured more pints than any business in all of central Iowa last year with a whopping 11,194! They believe the world’s best beer should be treated with respect. Guinness should be poured properly, in a proper pint, at a proper price. This October they are even doing 31 days of Guinness with a special every day. Starting with paint-ityourself pottery, the studio added glass fusing, paint and sip canvas classes and candle making to it’s offerings. The bright atmosphere and friendly staff prove to be an open invitation for creating and connecting with friends and family. “It has just been a pleasure to be a part of so many memories that have been created here over the years,” says Glazed Expressions owner, Laura Riegel. “We have hosted thousands of birthday parties, bridal showers and bachelorette parties, corporate groups, as well as walk-in groups of friends and families. Every person or group has their own story and interest and it makes for no two days being the same here. I truly have the best job in the world!” Pottery painting has been the mainstay from the beginning. Glazed Expressions offers between 250-300 bisque pottery pieces to design and paint. Pottery pieces start at just $5 and average prices are $12-$35. Dozens of paint colors and tools are available for designing. After firing, pottery is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Glass fusers choose from pre-cut design glass or the staff will teach clients how to cut glass on their own. When done designing, the staff fuse the glass together in a kiln. Clients can choose to have glass fired a second time to shape it into a vase, votive holder, bowl or other fun shapes. Glass pricing starts at $12 and is ready to be picked up after one week. Glass is all food and dishwasher safe. Canvas painting or “paint and sip” classes were added just over two years ago. Scheduled classes are offered several times a week and open canvas painting can be done anytime outside of a scheduled class. Private parties for friends or business groups can be scheduled 7 days a week. For scheduled classes, reservations are strongly suggested. The candle studio is the newest medium offered and began this past July. Dozens of candle shapes, scents, and colors are available to create a traditional candle, or add embellishments to make a candle bouquet. Candles are ready to be picked up the next day or can be express cooled and ready in one hour for an additional fee. “Many women who remember the monthly celebrations, “Diva Nights”, that were hosted at Glazed Expressions several years ago, continually request we bring back these fun events again. So, to honor those requests we have implemented several organized activities including “Art Attack!”, “Masterpiece Mixers” and “Gays Night Out”, states Maddie Riegel, Manager at Glazed Expressions.
