DVNR pre-processing brings out the best performance from your MPEG-2 encoder. One of the main problems in MPEG-2 encoding is the introduction of artefacts. This is a result of an encoder incapable of handling the complexity of the pictures. To deal with this situation the signal should be adapted to the encoder by applying appropriate preprocessing. The two main pre-processing operations are bandwidth shaping and noise reduction. Bandwidth shaping reduces high-frequency details to a level where the pictures can be efficiently handled by the encoder. Some picture details are lost but this is usually preferable. The artefacts introduced by the encoder are normally much worse for the viewer. The brickwall filter provides optimal control of picture detail through the use of two-dimensional spatial filtering. There are thousands of great films waiting for re-release on new digital media formats such as DVD and Video-On-Demand (VOD). Most of these old classics need refurbishment to meet the demands of today’s consumers. Among other things, dirt, dust, scratches, hop and weave have to be removed. This is normally a time consuming process, especially when the highest quality is required. The dirt and scratch removal tool swiftly removes most damages to the film, without generating undesirable artefacts, in real time. In contrast, optical processes may only remove surface damages to the film but not opaque objects and damages to the emulsion layer. Film stock has evolved over the years providing finer and finer grain structures at the same or higher sensitivity levels. To match Noise is, by its nature, a signal with no temporal redundancy. The MPEG-2 algorithms rely heavily on temporal redundancy to achieve high compression ratios. Thus, noise will use a significant amount of the bit budget. In most cases noise is not desired in the final result and is therefore better removed before encoding so that the precious bits can be used to describe the real picture content. The grain and noise reducer provides sophisticated tools to optimise the noise profile of your content. Using these tools, encoding efficiency can be improved by up to 30%. This improved efficiency can either be used to improve the picture quality at a given bitrate or to maintain the picture quality at a lower bitrate.
