Spring is always an exciting yet challenging time of year on a high school campus. As we complete this edition of the newsletter, our students are about to embark on a month-long testing journey. Students in grade 11 will be taking required state tests in English and mathematics as part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress System (CAASPP). Please note that the CAASPP is used as one measure of how our students and the school are performing in relation to the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. It is imperative that all 11th graders take these exams so we can once again calibrate how well we are doing with the new curriculum and associated instructional practices. The CAASPP tests will be administered from April 25-April 28. Students in the 10th grade will be taking the federally mandated life science exam. Many students in grades 9-12 will begin Advanced Placement (AP) testing and some 11th and 12th grade students will complete a series of IB tests in pursuit of the highly sought after International Baccalaureate Diploma. Ultimately, all of the test results are reviewed at the beginning of each school year by our entire staff. The data provide a wealth of information about how well we are doing in preparing our students to be college and career ready. The data also provides the school with The data provide a wealth of information about how well we are doing in preparing our students to be college and career ready. specific evidence related to just how well we are doing in comparison to other schools in the county, state, nation and in some cases even internationally. Mission Viejo High School remains a strong academic institution because we take these tests and the subsequent data results very seriously for all students. During this testing period, I would encourage all parents to make sure that your student(s) come to school each day of testing and that they get plenty of rest in anticipation of doing their very best on each exam. WASC Accreditation and Self-Study WASC stands for the “Western Association of Schools and Colleges”. Over the next several months, the faculty, staff and community at Mission Viejo High School will embark on a journey to complete the next WASC Self-Study, which ends with a School-wide Action Plan that helps drive our improvement efforts over the next 6 years. The SelfStudy is part of the process which ultimately determines Mission Viejo High School’s accreditation status. Specifically, schools must be accredited in order for their students to be granted admission into Mission Viejo High School, 25025 Chrisanta Dr., Mission Viejo, CA, 92691, 949-837-7722, Fax: 949-830-0782, Website: http://www.svusd.k12.ca.us/Schools/MVHS/ 1 Principal’s Message Continued— MI S S I O N V I E J O HI G H S C HO O L colleges and universities throughout the country.
