Congratulations! You’re on the road of family discovery, wanting to learn more about those who came before
you. Maybe you have already started by trying Ancestry.com, or talking to your relatives, or maybe you are just
curious about the paths your research will take you. We want to help you navigate your journey with a day for
beginners – or for those who want to make sure they have the process well in hand.
10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Starting a Family History Journey – Delia Bourne.
Discover the basics of gathering information from your living relatives and family sources, and the
importance of organization in the research process. A brief overview will be provided on what records
you may discover in your search, and how those records may be used to further your family story. An
introduction will be provided to Ancestry.com’s census collection and how to use it as a springboard to
other records. Finally, a tour of The Genealogy Center will be offered to familiarize you with what can be
found.
1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Beyond Just Starting – Delia Bourne.
Learn how to verify the information you find, and the importance of documenting what you find as well
as where you find it. Discover how to harvest as much information as possible from various records. You
will see how to use the free FamilySearch website, and be provided with a virtual tour of The Genealogy
Center’s licensed databases.
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Beyond Hatched, Matched & Dispatched: Methods for Finding Our Families’
Stories – Curt Witcher.
There is so much more to learn about our ancestors and their families than can be discovered just through
census and vital records. Methods for discovering other resources to find more information about our
families and the stories of their lives will be shared.
