MY KARATE BIOGRAPHY
BORN: Westminster, London
D.O.B – 25TH FEBRUARY 1938
1949 – Commenced Karate Training in Newport, South Wales, UK under Sensei
Senchi Nakayama 4th Dan from Okinawa, Japan in Shorin Ryu style
1951 Won the Junior Kata and Kumite title of South Wales, UK
1952. Won the South of England Kata and Kumite Championships in Greenwich
England.
Family Departed England for Australia in December 1952
Arrived Adelaide City – Australia in January 1953
1953 – Adelaide –Trained in Shotokan style Karate with Shotokan School of South
Australia
1955 – Moved to Newcastle, New South Wales . Joined the Australian Airforce and
was sent to training school. Taught self defense to the Drill Instructor at Richmond
Airforce Base and the members on course.
Introduced to Sensei Sakata Sasagawa – 5th Dan from Okinawa, of Shuri Shorin
Karate-do.
1956 – Graded to 1st Dan Black Belt by Sensei Sakato Sasagawa
1956 - Competed in All Armed forces Karate Championships held in City of Wagga,
New South Wales – Won the Kata and Kumite Champion for my grade and weight.
Posted to Airforce Base Laverton, Victoria in 1956
1956 - Began my Karate training under Sensei Ochida Koshiki – 4th Dan, of the Shuri
Shorin Ryu Karate – Okinawa, Japan in Melbourne City
1959 – Posted to Airforce base PEARCE in Western Australia in August. Commenced
teaching Karate at the Airforce Base with approval from Sensei Ochida Koshiki
1961 –Discharged from the Airforce at Pearce Airforce Base.
Started small Dojo in Church hall and continued teaching at various locations till left
Perth city for Brisbane to meet up with Okinawan Master and Sensei’s who arrived in
November 1967.
1967 to June 1968 – Uchides to Hanshi Dr, Heihatiro Okada – 9th Dan of Shuri Shorin
Ryu Karate-do and his assistants – Sensei’s Yoritake Matsudaira and Osamu Aoyama –
5th & 4th Dans respectively.
Trained in Kobudo – weapons – Bo, Jo, Tonfa, Sai, Nunchaku, Katana(Iaido), Fan,
Kama.
1968 – June – Graded to Nidan by Hanshi Dr. Okada and Yoritake Matsudaira, and
Osamu Aoyama. Received certificate.
1968 – Returned home to begin teaching at new dojo location, and also became an
instructor for another style of Karate called – Kyokushinkai.
1969 – Injured in industrial accident and operated on spine on 24th December 1969.

1970 – January, Moved to Margaret River country town in Western Australia to
recuperate with my parents and sisters family.
1970 – February 8th, commenced 1st ever Karate club in the Southwest Country of
Western Australia and slowly expanded to many country towns throughout Western
Australia
1971 – Trained under Sensei Haruo Kato -5th Dan Goju Ryu Sensei from mainland
Japan. GRADED to 2nd Dan by him in 1973.
1974 – Joined Karate Budokan International(shotokan base karate)
1975. Was graded to 2nd Dan in by the grandmaster Chew Choo Soot
1976 – Travelled to Malaysia – competed in the Karate Budokan International
Championships in kata and kumite. Won minor placings. Graded to 3rd Dan in Goju
Ryu by Sensei Sui Yuen 4th Dan and Shihan Pannir p- 5th Dan
1976 to 1989 travelled throughout Malaysia Teaching and conducting Gasshuku’s
1977 - Graded by Sensei’s Yoritake Matsudaira and Osamu Aoyama to 4th Dan in
Shuri Shorin Ryu.
Graded later that year to 4th Dan in Goju Ryu by Sensei Sui Yuen and Shihan Panni.
1979 – Formulated the Rules and Regulations and scoring system for a new
Tournament called – 1st Australia National ALL STYLES Martial Arts Championships.
1980 – Event was held in Margaret River Western Australia with competitors coming
from all over Australia and New Zealand – 178 competitors from Kung Fu, Burmese
Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Free style Martial Arts, Chinese Kick Boxing, and the various
range of Karate systems. Lasted 3 days. Huge success.
This system and Championships is still used and programmed for every state of
Australia, and also was expanded into the WORLD ALL STYLES
ORGANIZATION CHAMPIONSHIPS, held in other countries every 4 years.
1982 Travelled to mainland Japan(Tokyo) with 3 students. Was met by Hanshi Dr.
Heihatiro and Shihan Kimura from Okinawa. Training included Kobudo as well as
Shiatsu, Yoga, and many other methods in the healing ways. Graded to 6th Dan Shihan
Title by them both.
1983 – National All Styles Championships held in Adelaide City , Australia. 40 of my
members competed and returned with 80% of the trophies across all ages and events,
mainly Gold medals and 1st Place Grand Champions
1983 – The sad passing away of Hanshi Dr. Heihatiro Okada – Okinawa , Japan. I
attended and trained for 1 month.
1984. Travelled to Mainland Japan again – Tokyo with 6 of my students after
competing in World Championships in Malaysia. Was trained under Hanshi Michiro
Kimura, Shihan Kentaro Sato and Kyoshi Hiroshi Okita.
1985 – Travelled to:- India , Madras, Bombay, New Delhi and Manipur, Opened
schools in these cities, Studied KILARI(ancient India Martial Arts) and Yoga and Yoga
medicine.
Moved on to Sri Lanka and opened karate school in many parts of Sri Lanka
Was elected President of the New Formed ‘ASIA PACIFI MARTIAL ARTS
FEDERATION’
1986 – returned to Okinawa and mainland Japan. Trained under Kancho Shigeki
Izumi of the Shiseikan Seito Yoga Karate-do.
Was graded to 7th Dan by Hanshi Kimura and Kyoshi Okita in December 1986
1988 – received 7th Dan certificate from Okinawa.
1987 – Commenced the planning, designing of a New Karate Headquarters in the town
of Margaret River Western Australia. It will be Unique and the ONLY one of its kind
in Australia.
1988 – began physically working on the building which was financed through
fundraising and a Government Grant.
1988 Was awarded the ‘”MEDAL OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA” personally
by Her Majesty the Queen of England, for my services to the community through the
Martial Arts. In the Book of Records, I am the ONLY Karate instructor to ever receive
an Australian Award since the Constitutional induction of these awards in 1971. Only
Judo and Jujitsu were awarded prior to this year, and no other Medal awarded to
Karate since.
1989 – April was the opening of the Traditional 2 storey Karate Dojo, surrounded by
an enclosed wall of Japanese gardens, and an outside ½ acre area of Japanese Gardens.
Officially opened by the President of the Japanese Association and the Minister for
Sport.
1989 October – Officiated at the 1st APMAF World Championships – held in Teluk
Intan, Malaysia. This was the ALL STYLES tournament.
1990 – retired from my organization temporary due to medical problems. Retired as
President of the APMA FEDERATION
1991 – returned to teaching
1993 – Left the Margaret River town and built a new home in a northern suburb of
outer Perth. Started teaching students again.
1994 – Began Judging at NATIONAL ALL STYLES Tournaments again.
1995 – Awarded 8th Dan Hanshi from the International Academy Karate-do Myja Goju
Ryu Renmei
1996 – Official Judge, Referee and Adjudicator at thew ALL STYLES National Titles
held in PERTH, Western Australia
1997 – Travelled to India and stayed for 1 month conducting Gasshuku’s all over India.
1998 – Received the MENKYO KAIDEN of the Okinawa Shuri Ken Shorin Ryu
Karate-do Assoc and 8th Dan Rank. From Hombu Dojo in Ishigaki-Jima(Ryukyu
Islands) direct from Hanshi Okita.
1999, Hanshi Okita passed away, and the Okinawa Family decided that the HOMBU
Dojo operate out of Australia and all records, Red Belt and authority passed to me with
Family blessings.
2000 – Awarded the Australian Sports Medal by Australian Government for my
services to Martial Arts and Sport.
2001 – Awarded and presented with 9th Dan Hanshi from the board of promotions of
the Shuri Shorin Ryu Karate-do RENMEI of Japan.
2001 Travelled to Sri Lanka to establish the New Chief Instructor of our Branch.
2003 – Presented with Hanhsi 10th Dan from the International Academy Karate-do
Myja Goju Ryu Renmei at a special ceremony in Perth, Western Australia at a 40th
reunion party.
2004 – commenced the “MARTIAL ARTS GROUP” annual Camps open to ALL
martial Artists
These camps are still operating each year to this day.
2007 – Arranged and programmed a contingent of Karate personnel from around
Australia to travel to Okinawa on a PILGRIMAGE- Presented the photos and soil
from the graves and beaches of Western Australia to return the Spirits of the Okinawan
Pearl divers who lost their lives in BROOME – Western Australia.
2008- Joined the MAA-I. Organised the successful Weekend MARTIAL ARTS
GROUP CAMP in Western Australia, bringing High Ranked Masters of many Styles
to teach for FREE, they paid own Airfare to attend the camp. We had Tae Kwon Do,
Iaido, Jujitsu, Savate, Chinese Wushu, Wing Chun, Hapkido,Tai Chi, One Senior
Teacher taught the ways of the Animals, as he is a Zoo Keeper.Chinese Boxing and
Judo Master, Aikijutsu Master, Goshin Jutsu master.
Travelled to 2 Cities of Australia to conduct training and Grading classes.
2009 – Awarded MAA-I Grandmaster Title, also “HALL OF FAME” Certificate.
Again, travelled to 2 Australian Cities to teach and conduct gradings for a variety of
Martial Art systems.
Received more Certification from MAA-I for my years of dedication to Martial Arts
around the world.
Introduced the President – Soke Alexey Kunin – of the All Japan Jujitsu Federation to
the MAA-I Grandmaster Bernd Hoehle which brought about the successful
connection to the MAA-I of Soke Alexey Kunin who Thanked me when we met in
Melbourne later in the year.
2010 – Appointed as the MAA-I Ambassador to the Australia/Oceania Region, to
encourage the growth in that region. Have now had Hanshi James Plumridge –Kokusai
Shoujin Martial Arts Renmei 10th Dan of New Zealand appointed Ambassador of that
and Solomon Islands country, and Hanshi Barry Bradshaw – Australian Shihan Kai
(Judo/Jujitsu/Chinese Boxing - 10th Dan as Ambassador to Australia and Fiji.
