Greetings from Ken
Aloha fellow directors and owners,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each of you. We are looking forward to the
end of 2010 under budget, and with a lot of work accomplished. We anticipate a lot of
other projects being completed in 2011 as well, and it is pleasing that by staying in budget
we were able to have a reduction in the association fees for 2011. Progress on the land
acquisition is being made and I talked to Stanley again today. He is in California for the
holidays, and finished his acceptance proposal to our offer and sent it to his brothers for
th
signature. He’ll return on January 6 , and will get it to us right after that. Several sources
of financing should be available, and I feel confident that we will be able to make progress
and acquire the land.
Mele Kalikimaka and a Happy New Yeark to all of the Kona Reef family.
Aloha
Ken

Projects
We had a great year of projects at the Kona Reef. Tile of the walkways and stairwells in
ABC was completed. New railings for the F building and the pool area, as well as new
gates for the pool area was completed. The Lava walls in the pool area were rebuilt in two
areas, and new top surfaces were put on the walls. The bathroom at the pool was
remodeled, and a new shower stand was installed at the pool area. New main water
shutoffs were installed, and additional landscaping was done. We have new roof coatings
on all buildings, with a guarantee. Exhaust fans were installed in garages.
Sun set
In 2011 additional tile work will be done, lighting improvements, additional painting, and
landscaping are part of the projects planned.
January 2011 – Volume III, Issue 1– Kona Reef Association
Budget
With all the projects completed, and payback of a
$40,000 deficit from 2008, the Kona Reef came in under
budget for 2010.
Association Fees
www.konareefowners.com
The association fees were held the same in 2010, and
the fees were reduced for 2011.
Lease Negotiations
The lease negotiation for the next 5 years was done at
minimal cost, and lease payments will remain the same
until November 2015.
.
Land Purchase
There is every reason for optimism regarding the purchase
of the land. It is possible to have a written agreement in early
January. Several sources of financing the acquisition are also
available. The acquisition of the land is important for the stability
and future of the Kona Reef.
Owners Meeting
The next owners meeting is just over 4 months away, and we hope for a good turnout of owners. Besides the election of
directors, it is very possible that terms of the land purchase could be on the agenda.

Thousands of students have attended Konawaena
Middle School, but only one saw a sunrise and
sunset every 45 minutes as he circled the Earth at
17,000 miles per hour.
the Space Shuttle Challenger, a mission that ended
in an explosion that claimed the lives of Ellison and
his six colleagues.
Just one floated in space for 72 hours and
accomplished his dream of becoming an astronaut.
The 30 students in Sandy Cameli's leadership and
study skills class have never met Col. Ellison
Onizuka, who decades ago walked the same
hallways they now roam. Still, the hometown hero
inspires these seventh and eighth graders.
It was evident in their "Dear Ellison" project,
presented Monday afternoon to the astronaut's
youngest brother Claude Onizuka and oldest sister
Jan. 28, 1986, marks the date of the launch of
While it has been nearly 25 years, the class
discovered the community has not forgotten Ellison,
his life growing up in Kona or his contributions.
Their research over the past two months was put
into a book and video as a tribute to Ellison and in
commemoration of the historic event. Copies of the
book and video were given to Shirley and Claude,
who announced afterward that, in thanks, the family
has arranged for astronaut Dan Tani to visit the
class in January and share his space experience.
Prior to the presentation, the class asked Ellison's
siblings about the astronaut's first mission, his wife
and daughters, working in the family store, his

favorite food and watching the launch. They learned
Ellison was "an ordinary, but curious boy," who
excelled in school, "did his very best in everything,"
loved sports and enjoyed fishing. Occasionally,
Ellison got in trouble like when he lit a Roman
candle in the house or drag raced and broke his
father's car.
The idea for the project began at the start of the
school year, as Cameli had her students line up in
the order of their birthdays as an icebreaker. When
one student announced a Jan. 28 birthday, Cameli's
exclamation of it being "a significant date" drew
blank stares. When she further mentioned Ellison,
her students responded, "Who's that?"
This spawned a homework assignment, requiring
the class to visit the nearby gym that bears his name
and the space center at Kona International Airport.
The students also had to research the Challenger
disaster and interview three family members or
adults who watched it.
They learned the Challenger exploded 73 seconds
after liftoff, nine miles above Cape Canaveral and
the debris fell into the Atlantic Ocean. Millions of
television screens worldwide flashed the same
horrifying sequence as a NASA commentator
announced a malfunction. People gathered and
wept.
"My mother, who is from South Africa, said she and
her classmates were watching the launch on TV and
people were celebrating everywhere. Everyone held
their breath as the Challenger shot forward in shock,
watching the explosion. It seemed like a bad joke
that someone was playing and like it was impossible
to be real," said seventh grader Hannah Willis, 12.
"My science teacher said he watched it a few times
because he just couldn't believe it. He felt upset and
couldn't help, but wonder what could have gone
wrong. He watched it on the news and said that it
took awhile to sink in."
The class then wrote letters to Ellison, sharing what
they learned about him, his keynote speech for the
Konawaena High School's class of 1980, and how
he touched their lives and their dreams.
Moved by Ellison, students Andrew Ollero-Heist
and Carlina Sadumiano also wrote a rap, Never
Back Down, in a day. Claude's eyes watered after
the opening verse: "You shot for the moon and
became a star, never backing down from any
challenge, you faced at all. And you've
accomplished something a lot of people have failed
to do, pursing your dream in order to make it come
true."
"It's important that we remember his story," Ollero-Heist said. "It reminds us that if a boy from Kona
can make it, so can I."
Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center is at the Kona International Airport
This is an educational facility dedicated to the memory of astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who was
born and raised on the Big Island, and who tragically perished in the Challenger Space
Shuttle disaster of 1986
