 The Little Book Of Gems By Jaki Bent The Little Book of Gems 1 About the Author Jaki has been interested in the subtle effects that semi precious Gemstones can have on people for a number of years. She had her own business designing and making simple gemstone jewellery for 9 years. Jaki used both Gems and Colour to help create more balance in what was a ‘difficult’ time in her life. W hether the benefits were psychological or real she cannot prove. B ut there were benefits! This little book is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ – but hopefully it will generate an interest and positive change for you.

I can’t explain how it works ~ but I believe it does ~ My intention when writing this little book is to provide you with a tiny piece of information, about the most popular semi-­‐precious gemstones, to stimulate your interest in them ~ so that they can be beneficial to you and your life. One word of advice, and this is only my opinion, never be talked into buying a particular stone – follow your own intuition (gut instinct) – if it is right you will know – trust yourself! The Little Book of Gems 4 Agate Agate is a form of Chalcedony, regarded as a powerful healer that nurtures and strengthens both mind & body. Other qualities are that it helps to both ground & energise, enabling a recognition & acceptance of truth in life. Amber According to Norse Mythology Amber was formed from the tears of Freya – the Goddess of Love and Fertility. Amber is said to act as a good healer by drawing disease from the body. Brings wisdom, balance and patience. It is believed to help one to choose or to be chosen. The Little Book of Gems 5 Amethyst It is reputed that Amethyst calms the mind & the nervous system; helps to reduces anger, impatience & frustration; Aids sleep, soothes nightmares & headaches; balances blood sugar. In ancient times it was believed that it would also help those with addictions to ‘Poisons’ for example – alcohol. Apache Tear A dark smoky coloured translucent variety of Obsidian ~ believed to be named after the tears shed by Native American Indian women at a time of loss. It gently grounds and unblocks the lower body, helping to ease and release pain, sadness and anger. Absorbs negative energy and protects the aura. The Little Book of Gems 6 Aquamarine In times gone by Aquamarine was believed to be formed from the tears of Mermaids. Serenity, relaxation, creativity and quiet honest communication are associated with Aquamarine. Aventurine A pale to mid green stone with sparkly flecks; usually semi-­‐translucent. Aventurine is often used as a good luck stone. It is believed to promote success. Also used for general healing. Historically it was used to draw the heat out of fevers. Place in your bath water for a soft, soothing & relaxing soak. The Little Book of Gems 7 Azurite Also known as the ‘Stone of Heaven’ Azurite is said to stimulate awareness and knowledge of our higher selves. Providing guidance through the third eye. Bringing to our attention areas of ourselves, our lives or our character that may require change. Black Onyx A crystal that is both grounding and clarifying. Aiding positive change that helps to bring about feelings of security and balance. The Little Book of Gems 8 Bloodstone (Heliotrope) Bloodstone is a form of jasper – a type of quartz. It is deep green with ‘symbolic’ red flecks. Bloodstone is believed to provide inner guidance; mental balance; increase courage and aid recognition that chaos precedes transformation. It is also reputed to help in balancing iron deficiencies. Blue Calcite Calcites come in a variety of colours, blue, green, orange, yellow, white, etc. It feels waxy to the touch. Blue calcite calms thoughts allowing them to become focused. It can be effective as a sedative after emotional trauma. The most powerful way to use this stone is as an elixir. It is advisable to place it in some muslin and then into the water. The Little Book of Gems 9 Blue Goldstone Joy is the key word for this stone. It is gently uplifting, can reduce stomach tension, aid blood flow & dispel toxins. Goldstone is reputed to restore natural energy. Blue Lace Agate Blue Lace Agate is a pale blue, semi-­‐translucent stone, interspersed with layers of milky-­‐white quartz. Blue Lace Agate is believed to aid the flow of expression and help to gently expand consciousness. Gently calming the mind. Useful for the relief of headaches. The Little Book of Gems 10 Carnelian Carnelian is a translucent orange variety of chalcedony – a type of quartz. It is thought that carnelian can aid positive life choices. The key words in relation to it are assertiveness, confidence, boldness, initiative & precision. Carnelian is also believed to help to dispel the fear of death, bringing an acceptance of the cycle of life. The Little Book of Gems 11 Citrine ‘Stone of Prosperity’ Transparent yellow-­‐clear quartz. Citrine is alleged to be an uplifting crystal that is thought to reduce negative energy and increase awareness and control of both mind and emotions. It is reputed to be energising and invigorating by increasing motivation, physical energy, and activating creativity. The Little Book of Gems 12 Fluorite Fluorite ranges in colour from shades of grey to gorgeous transparent greens and purples. A good balancer and healer for mental energies. Alleviating stress from hectic lifestyles and aiding peaceful sleep. Often used as a detoxifier. Good for meditation. Garnet Garnet is known as The Crystal of Health. It is believed that it aids the removal of negative energy from the charkas and then balances & stimulates them. It has also been known as the Stone of Commitment. It represents love by revitalising feelings & energy. The Little Book of Gems 13 Geode A geode is created by volcanic bubbles. The exterior is solid agate, with the centre being usually Rock Crystal or Amethyst. Geodes symbolise the beauty and power that is found within. Hawks Eye (Falcons Eye) Hawks Eye is believed to provide insight and truth into our inner self, our life situations and those of others. Allowing us to ‘see’ things from a variety of perspectives; giving the benefit of a general overview ~ enabling us to grow. The Little Book of Gems 14 Hematite ‘Stone of the Mind’ Hematite is reputed to aid memory, concentration and self-­‐control. Promoting confidence; self-­‐esteem; belief in oneself and willpower. Howlite Known as the Stone of ‘gentleness, patience and calm’. Tension, stress and anxiety are reputed to be relieved and soothed by Howlite. It has a high calcium content that is believed to benefit bones and teeth. An aid for deep and restful sleep. The Little Book of Gems 15 Jade Jade is renowned for being both calming & relaxing. It is the stone for success, courage, wisdom and balance ~ all from the heart. Good for understanding dreams. Labradorite Labradorite appears grey until a closer look reveals a magical rainbow of blues, greens and yellows. Helps to protect the aura -­‐ by enabling energy to flow evenly throughout the body. Boosts individual strengths and enhances communication skills. The Little Book of Gems 16 Lapis Lazuli ‘The Stone of Protection.’ Lapis Lazuli is said to have existed since before ‘time was born’. In ancient Egypt it was placed in the tombs with the Pharaohs for their protection. Lapis Lazuli is considered to be a powerful thought amplifier, boosting creativity, clarity & objectivity. Lemon Chrysoprase Calming and Balancing. Believed to help to clarify personal problems and ease depression by bringing greater wisdom, self-­‐
confidence and flexibility. Uplifts the heart, boosts generosity and increases selflessness. The Little Book of Gems 17 Leopard skin Jasper A supportive stone that is believed to aid our life choices, although not always in the way we assumed! Also believed to be useful for stimulating the immune system. Malachite ‘Stone of Transformation’ ‘The Writers Stone’ Malachite is considered to help clarify emotions by drawing out hurt and confusion. Assisting in the removal of old ineffective habits and negativity from past experiences ~ thus enabling ‘Transformation’ and allowing positive changes to occur. Considered to provide a barrier against negativity & can be used to assist in finding unknown or hidden factors in complicated or confusing situations Optical Calcite (Also known as Iceland Spa) This form of clear calcite is believed to aid our ability to relate to the world around us in a balanced and productive way. Red Jasper is understood to help with inspiration and ideas, turning them from dreams into reality. Rhodonite Rhodonite is pink with black elements. It is said to work on areas of the heart and emotional balance. Boosting self-­‐belief and accomplishment. A calming stone that aids emotional stress, heartache & loss. Rose Quartz Rose Quartz is often referred to as the ‘quartz of the heart’ or the ‘quartz of unconditional love’. Its translucent pale pink colour is symbolic of warmth and love. assertiveness and act as a balancer for both the physical and emotional sides of our nature. Watermelon Tourmaline Inspiration is the key word for Watermelon Tourmaline. Its energy is considered to help to clear, maintain and stimulate each of the energy centres in our body. It is also believed to relieve chronic fatigue and exhaustion.
