Although nationally recognized as the birthplace of scheduled airline flight, St. Petersburg is also home to an active airport that is rich with even more aviation history, Albert Whitted Airport. In 2013, Albert Whitted Airport celebrated its 85th anniversary, although the field has actually been around much longer. National Airlines, one of the nation’s first airlines, began service here in 1934. In the late 1930s, Goodyear chose Albert Whitted as one of the first airports to base its famous blimps. During World War II, Albert Whitted Airport helped support the war effort when it was converted from a public airfield to a military air base. For generations, Albert Whitted Airport has served us in many unique and often unrecognized ways. This service to our community continues today. Albert Whitted Airport Preservation Society (AWAPS) was formed in 2003 with the mission of preserving and enhancing Albert Whitted Airport. AWAPS works with our fellow citizens and businesses to keep this downtown transportation and commerce center a vital part of our city. Our vision is to make St. Petersburg’s downtown airport the finest general aviation airport in the country: one that incorporates public recreation areas, aviation education, vibrant airport businesses and an aviation museum to show our city’s proud place in aviation history. Albert Whitted Airport is one of St. Petersburg’s most valuable assets. It is rich with history, vibrant with business and enticing with things to see and do. Visit Albert Whitted Airport today – you’ll be amazed at what you will find at St. Petersburg’s downtown gem.
