The Museum at The Creamery THE SKANEATELES HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Sept-Oct 2013 Vol. 28, No. 4 Laurie Winship, Editor BOAT BUILDING ADDITION COMPLETED SEPTEMBER PROGRAM Exploring the Erie Canal, then and now. Thanks to generous donations, particularly from Joe Spalding, we were able to complete this wonderful addition. Stay tuned for the boats that will be on display. One is Joe’s International Dinghy, built by the Skaneateles Boat and Canoe Co. in 1932, which is on loan. Sarah Wiles, of Mid-Lakes Navigation, will be discussing the history, significance, and current importance of the Erie Canal. She will explain the history of Mid-Lakes Navigation, the Wiles family’s interest in New York canals, and of course their involvement in the Skaneateles community and the lake. The mailboat, run on the “Barbara S. Wiles,” is one of the unique features of Skaneateles Lake, and cruises on the “Judge Ben Wiles” are always popular. Please join us on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 at the Museum at The Creamery. Bring a friend or neighbor! Don’t forget that our gift shop is always open during our programs. It’s an easy way to do some shopping! And, we will be holding 50/50 raffles at our programs to help pay for our operating expenses. The purpose of the Skaneateles Historical Society is to conduct and encourage historical research and to collect, preserve, and exhibit historical material in connection with the Town of Skaneateles. The presentation will include many family photos, so you can see the faces as well as hear the stories. The public is welcome! PAGE Norm Shepard 3 by Kihm Winship History relies, to a great extent, on people who preserve memories, documents, photographs and artifacts. Without those who save and share, there would be no history, of families, villages or even nations. Skaneateles has been blessed with many such people who feel the village’s history is worth saving, but not all of the village’s benefactors live within its limits. One long-distance Skaneateles scholar is Norm Shepard, who has lived in Florida since 1966. For more than 30 years, he has collected Skaneateles postcards, most of which now reside at the Skaneateles Historical Society. Thanks to Norm, we have a better idea of how the village has appeared and evolved over the past century. Norman Shepard was the son of Edward E. “Ted” and Frieda Shepard, who owned Shepard’s Nursery, west of the village on Route 20. The elder Shepard started out by raising shrubs and perennials on his father’s farm in Shepard Settlement, and in 1934 founded his nursery near County Line Road; it grew to 160 acres. Norm, and sisters Barbara and Kay, grew up in the family home just west of the Sherwood Inn. On the front lawn, Norm (left) and his cousin, Bill Kuhl (right), sold vegetables grown at the nursery. Norm’s collecting got its start at the nursery, when the soil yielded Native American artifacts. He started a stamp collection, then postal history and postcards. Every year, when the ground froze in New York, the Shepard family drove south. The Shepard children would begin school in New York state (learning New York history) then transfer to Florida schools (learning Florida history,) and then back to New York schools in the spring. In the gap, their Skaneateles teachers would mail homework to Florida so the students could pass exams when they returned. As a boy, Norm made many trips to the old Skaneateles Post Office on Genesee St., a narrow office with wood floors, post office boxes and the clerk’s office at the back, a place he remembers “like it was yesterday.” Norm graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1962 and went to Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. After graduation, he went down to the family cottage on New Smyrna Beach and was hired by the state of Florida as a youth counselor at the State Employment Office. “Been down here ever since,” he notes, but still with a place in his heart (and his collecting) for Skaneateles, for which we are all very fortunate.
