BAPTISM CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS
The required Baptism class for new parents is held the second
Sunday of each month beginning with the 12:00 Mass parents are
asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar.
Penance/Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated every Saturday from
12:30-1:30 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM in our church or by
appointment.
Marriage
Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9
months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be
arranged through the parish.
Anointing of the Sick & Communion of the Sick
The anointing of the sick takes place after the 12:00 PM Mass on
the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone who is homebound may
receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. Eucharistic
ministers assist the priests in this ministry. Please call the rectory ext. 9101.
Adoration
First and third Fridays of the month 12:45-3:00 PM in the Church.
12:30-1:30 PM on Saturdays in the church.

TALKING ABOUT BEER
The U.S. government tells us that by the time they reach eighth grade 40%
of kids have already experimented with alcohol. I’m not sure exactly what
that means. In some cases it may simply be that there has been a sip or two of
beer at home with the parents. No big deal. That, to me, is hardly experimenting
and not a problem. What is a problem is when kids begin taking a drink with (or
without) their friends and it’s all done on the sneak. Often enough those early
drinks are the beginning of a serious and even lifelong battle with the bottle.
About ten years ago I was visiting a Catholic High School and there was a dialogue with the kids. We were discussing sin and I was surprised that getting
drunk did not even appear on the sin radar. The fact is that drinking is very
much a part of American culture and among adolescent males and men is almost
considered a badge of honor. For a moment, just consider what experience our
young people have with alcohol. In the summer backyard barbeques abound and
frequently there is plenty of beer—to say nothing of other so-called “adult beverages.” From an early age kids see significant adults in their lives drinking. If the drinking is moderate and responsible, that is fine. If it is in any
way excessive, the kids are learning all about the bottle in the wrong way.
High School has its own problems. There is a great interest in alcohol and
pressure is put on teens to drink. If they don’t, some of the kids are made to
feel that they just don’t fit in and are rejected because of their non-alcohol use.
This has nothing to do with the insanity of the present time—it has existed from
time immemorial. That is why parents should have a serious talk with their teens
about alcohol and drinking to excess. The plain, unvarnished truth is that
drunkenness is sinful and unacceptable. They should be shown articles in
Newsday about the auto accidents and deaths that are allegedly caused by
alcohol.
Parents of teens should be absolutely vigilant. They have God-given parental responsibility. If the kids are going out, know precisely and exactly where they are
going. Make sure that at any party or gathering your kid is attending there is
proper adult supervision. Take no nonsense. It’s great to trust your kid, but
never forget original sin. Kids are experts in telling parents what they want
to hear.
Alcoholic drinking is deadly serious business. It is not like acne that is annoying but goes away. It often results in death, serious injury, jail and ruined lives. There is nothing cool about hurting your body and endangering
other innocent peoples’ lives on the roads. All the counselors in the world
will not bring back someone who died in a tragic and absolutely unnecessary accident caused by alcohol or some other substance.
Later this summer I will have an article addressed to those going to college for the first
time and the drinking atmosphere they will enter. For the time being, however, I want to
talk just for a moment to engaged couples. One of the things that should be discussed
before marriage is drinking and whether there is any alcoholic history on either side of
the immediate families. It goes without saying that if either of the prospective
spouses has a serious drinking problem, there should be no marriage until that difficulty is definitively resolved. Failure to take this simple piece of advice can and
often results in a catastrophic marriage.
I urge anyone with any questions about alcoholism to come and visit me at the Rectory. You will be met with compassion, understanding and love. I will have some
suggestions for you and some resources that will be helpful. Please come.

ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS: Are you aware that the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires
ANYONE 18 YEARS OR OLDER IN ANY MINISTRY TO BE VIRTUS TRAINED AND HAVE
A BACKGROUND CHECK? 16 YEARS OR OLDER MUST BE BACKGROUND CHECKED.
A ministry includes Catechists, CYO Coaches, Liturgical Ministers, and all parish organization members. Check the Virtus Training Schedule and Register Online at www.drvc.org. Classes are offered by
several parishes throughout the diocese.
ATTENTION FIRST COMMUNION 2015 PARENTS: The First Communion DVDs have arrived!
Please pick up your copy at the Religious Education Office. (Our summer hours are listed below).
2015-2016 REGISTRATION: Registration materials for the 2015-16 school year were mailed to all
families who had students enrolled in religion classes from Kindergarten to grade 7 during this past
school year. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Any registrations received from now and until the
start of the school year are considered Late Registrations. Students will be placed where openings are
available.
NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION: Parents who will be registering a child for the first time in
our program should contact the Religious Education Office at (516)746-6585 x9404 for new student registration materials. NOTE: A copy of a child’s Baptismal Certificate MUST accompany
the registration for any new students in order for the registration to be processed.
CATECHISTS NEEDED: The Religious Education Office is looking for individuals who are willing
to serve as teachers to pass on their Catholic Faith to students enrolled in our program. Prior experience
is not necessary. Training will be provided. Please give prayerful consideration to answering this call
for teachers. For an application or further information, please call our office at (516) 746-6585 x9404.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: In addition to teachers, the Religious Education Office will need volunteers who can serve the parish and our students in positions such as classroom aides, hall monitors, traffic control, aides, substitute teachers, etc. Our school year runs from late September 2015 through early

ATTENTION 8TH GRADE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: The Special Needs Program is
looking for volunteers! If you are available on Thursday afternoons after 4:30PM and would like to get
some experience working with children, there is a special place for YOU to serve as a student aide. The
commitment would be an hour and a half each week. Service hour documentation, college recommendations, and scholarship letters are provided for our volunteers when requested. For further information,

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 2014-15 HOME SCHOOLED STUDENTS: Please return your child’s
completed textbooks and worksheets. Home school materials were due by July1 unless other arrangements have been made with the Religious Education Office. Your children will then receive credit for
the last school year and be able to register for the next grade. Outstanding Home School work delays

ATTENTION ALL CATECHISTS: Catechist Training Classes will be given throughout the summer.
All classes will begin at 7:15 PM and end by 9:15 PM in the Sts. Peter and Paul Room. Both sessions of
each class should be attended. Liturgy and Sacraments is recommended for all catechists. All new
catechists are asked to take the Getting Started class. Methods classes focus on two year blocks and present
ideas that work well with respective age groups. This year, a training class for working with Special Needs

register for these classes. Materials will be provided. All classes are open to all catechists or anyone
thinking of becoming a catechist.

As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, “Everything has its origin in God's love, everything
is shaped by it, everything is directed towards it. Love is God's greatest gift to humanity; it is his promise and our
hope.”
FOOD PANTRY - Our next monthly food drive is taking place during the weekend of August 1 st &
2nd. If you would like to donate food items or personal hygiene items, please bring the food donations
to the back of Church or across the street to the Parish Social Ministry Office. We also have a refrigerator for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread and a freezer for ground beef, chicken cutlets and frozen
pizzas. If you would like to donate fresh vegetables from your garden this summer that would be wonderful! ITEMS THAT ARE NEEDED: dishwashing liquid, clorox wipes, sponges and scrubbing pads (ex: Brillo) and paper towels.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE - We are collecting school supplies for the families we assist here
at our church as well as New Ground families. If you would like to make a donation of school
supplies or gift cards to Staples, Target, Wal-Mart or John’s Variety Store which is in Williston
Park please drop off your donations to the parish social ministry office. Our back-to-school
drive is taking place now so that we can assemble the backpacks/school supplies in August.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY – Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of
each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer
shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome.
You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The
next meeting will take place on Monday, July 27th. If you have some wool to donate to this ministry,
please bring it to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Please call our office if you would like to receive a
blessed prayer shawl or if you know of someone who would like one. If you have any questions, please call Parish

Every arch/diocese/eparchy in the United States now has a victim assistance coordinator who is available to obtain support for your needs, to help you make a formal complaint of abuse to the arch/diocese/
eparchy, and to arrange a personal meeting with the bishop or his representative, if you desire. The victim assistance coordinator for your arch/diocese/eparchy is Mary McMahon, LCSW, Director at (516)
594-9036. All volunteers 16 and over must be background checked and all volunteers 18 and over must
attend the Virtus class.
CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC CONFERENCE-There is still time to come and join us at the 2015 Annual
Catholic Charismatic Conference in Scranton, Pennsylvania held at Scranton University Conference dates are
July 31st August 1-2, 2015. "Father That They May be One" Jn. 17:21 (Theme for 2015) A bus has been
charted for the conference and will be picking up all interested at Saint Cyril and Methodius Parish in Deer Park

GENNESARET RETREAT-for those facing serious illness. A retreat especially designed for persons who
live with a serious illness is planned for September 18th, 19th and 20th at Monfort Spiritualit Center in Bay
Shore, NY. This retreat offers a respite, a quite time, an oasis to enable one to continue the journey. The retreat
focuses on God’s love, His forgiveness, and His faithfulness. Many gentle and attentive volunteer health care
professionals are available to you during the weekend to help see that your medical needs are met. Along with
our priest and medical team additional volunteers are there to assist you to help make your weekend comfortable. The retreat weekend schedule is designed to celebrate the love of the Lord Jesus Christ through prayer
times, talks by our priest directors, through quite time and ample periods of rest. It begins on Friday afternoon

WORLD WIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER-An enrichment for couples who have attended a Worldwide
