BAPTISM CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS
The required Baptism class for new parents is held the second
Sunday of each month beginning with the 12:00 Mass parents are
asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar.
Penance/Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated every Saturday from
12:30-1:30 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM in our church or by
appointment.
Marriage
Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9
months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be
arranged through the parish.
Anointing of the Sick & Communion of the Sick
The anointing of the sick takes place after the 12:00 PM Mass on
the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone who is homebound may
receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. Eucharistic
ministers assist the priests in this ministry. Please call the rectory ext. 9101.
Adoration
First and third Fridays of the month 12:45-3:00 PM in the Church.
12:30-1:30 PM on Saturdays in the church.

THE REAL FATHER O’MALLEY
If you like old movies (and I do) you may remember the closing scene of
The Bells of St. Mary with Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman. Bing Crosby
is Father Chuck O’Malley and he is saying an emotional goodbye to Sister
Benedict (Ingrid Bergman) and he tells her that if she needs anything, just dial
“0” for O’Malley. Today I want to talk to you about another Father O’Malley—but this one is a Jesuit and very real, not a fictional construct. This O’Malley has done a spectacular service to the Catholic Church by writing an extraordinary book, The Fifth Week. This is all about the priesthood and especially Jesuit priests. It is what I would consider the best book about priestly vocations I have ever seen—and it is superbly well written.
This book was first written in 1976 and published by Loyola Press. The brand
new edition is put out by Loyola Press and has an afterward by Father James
Martin, the noted Jesuit who is so very popular today and writes challenging
articles and great books. At any rate, when I saw the book almost forty years
ago, I knew it was great and through the years wondered why it didn’t receive
greater attention—it got plenty of mine! It is so good that I challenge any college age student to read it. Even better, I’ve bought some copies from Amazon and will gladly give them away. They are free for the asking. You can’t
do better than that!
This past Good Friday I was up in my sitting room thinking about the Passion of
Christ and Holy Week and I decided to pick up The Fifth Week. Even though I
first began reading it in the 70’s, I knew the section I wanted to read first. It’s
the personal story of Bill O’Malley’s own vocation and his problems with self
doubt and his struggles in the seminary. This book is not the usual pious stuff;
it is utterly realistic, keenly perceptive and speaks eloquently to young people of today.
There is a part of the book which deals with the lives of certain Jesuits. Let me
tell you this. As I was reading about these special men and their zeal, I actually
started to cry. It was that good and a genuine encouragement to do more for
Christ. Particularly moving for me was the way Father O’Malley portrayed
Father Dan Lord, the great friend of youth and relentless writer. Even when
he was dying of cancer and in great pain, he kept going till he went to be with
Christ.
For many years Father O’Malley taught high school at Fordham Prep and wrote extensively. In addition he was a consultant for the movie The Exorcist. A man of enormous
talent, his writing and teaching have led many to Christ. I have never met him, but his Fifth
Week has made a lasting impression on me. After all, any book that you want to go back to
after thirty-nine years, must be very worthwhile. Take my advice, particularly college
kids, read O’Malley. He has things to say that will change your life.

Statement on the Occasion of the Promulgation of Laudato Si’

With an open heart and gratitude I, along with my brother bishops in the United States, welcome
Laudato Si’. In this beautiful and extensive treatment on care for our common home, the Holy Father calls all people to consider our deep and intertwined relationships with God, our brothers and
sisters, and the gifts that our Creator has provided for our stewardship.
Drawing extensively from the teaching of his predecessors, the Pope teaches that care for the things
of the earth is necessarily bound together with our care of one another, especially the poor. This interdependency extends from the deep respect due every human person to all living beings and to the
earth where we make our home. “Each creature has its own purpose…and the entire material universe speaks of God’s love.”84 The Pope uses the term “integral ecology” to draw our attention to a
rich treasury of thought that people of faith bring with them to conversations about the human person and our environment. He states, “We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that
we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth
it.”229
In Laudato Si’, the Holy Father invites us to reflect deeply on all points of human activity, whether
we consider care for creation at the level of our individual choices or in the public square. The need
for urgent action is clear and he appeals to us to become “painfully aware” of what is happening to
the world and “to grow in solidarity, responsibility and compassionate care.”210 The Holy Father
makes it clear that we were given the earth as a gift from our Creator. It is our responsibility to avoid
contributing to a culture of acquisitiveness, individualism, or exploitation.
Pope Francis repeatedly urges us to renewed and urgent action and honest dialogue about our environment – both social and ecological. “The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together”48, both of which disproportionately affect our poorest brothers and sisters. Reflecting
on inner city slums, lack of clean drinking water, and a consumerism mentality, Pope Francis asks
“what kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us?”160 This question is at the
heart of this encyclical and rightfully calls us all to work harder against the challenges the human
family faces today.
Genuine efforts to true dialogue will require sacrifice and the confronting of good faith disagreements, but let us be encouraged that at “the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so
much, is always present. He does not abandon us…he has united himself definitively to our earth,
and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward.”245 May we help answer Pope Francis’
call in this encyclical, receiving his message and growing in responsibility towards the common
home that God has entrusted to us all.

The U.N. report, while alarming, isn't surprising considering all the accounts of ISIS brutality. The selfproclaimed Islamic State, through its conquests and savagery, is in a quest to form a vast caliphate governed under a strict version of Sharia law. (cnn.com, 2/6/15)

Our village will be honoring active duty members of the United States Armed Forces with
a Hometown Hero Banner. The Village of Williston Park is reaching out to active duty
members or family members, on their behalf, to please fill out an application. We are
looking for active duty members whose last residence was in the village prior to becoming an active duty member of the Armed Forces (e.g. attended high school or college
whose main residence is within the Incorporated Village of Williston Park.). Applications can be downloaded from the Village of Williston Park web site or picked up at the

WILLISTON PARK LIBRARY SUMMER READING CLUB
The Williston Park Library Summer Reading Club Kickoff will take
place on Wednesday, July 1st, from 12:00-3:00 PM. This summer's
theme is Every Hero Has a Story. Children of all ages are invited to

St. Aidan Students Take on Wall Street!
St. Aidan School eighth grade students participated in a 10 week
Tri State Stock Market Game competition. The Stock Market
Game is made possible through a grant from the SIFMA Foundation. Each team participates in an online simulation with
$100,000.00 to invest. St. Aidan School team "The Lombardos"
were 1st place winners and our "Sales Express" team came in 2nd
place! Congratulations to all of our winners.

Could we believe in this all-encompassing love of our God, Our God became what
we are! Weak, creatures tied down by the limitations of time and space, we are and
who is God? The fullness of all being and perfection, eternal, all powerful, all loving and
good, our Creator, our beginning and our end!
When we reflect on this amazing truth, in this miracle of God emptying himself, taking our
human condition and heal us of all which separates us from Him, in Jesus Christ we know
that God loves us, He became one of us, did this not for Himself, but “for us men and for our
salvation”. This makes our Faith a religion of hope and not of despair, in Jesus, God demonstrated his love for us and is now calling us to give ourselves to Him.
He has come to show us His love, in order that we may respond to it by giving Him ours. The
Son of God has made himself little, in order to make us great. He has come to give us the gift
of divine Love, let’s love a God who has come from Heaven to give himself entirely to us,
pray to surrender to Him, to allow Jesus to be our Lord and God! And pray for our family
and friends who do not know Jesus to receive the gift of faith and to share ours with them!
This week stop by our kiosks and look into the new titles, allow the Holy Spirit to direct your
attention to the talks most needed for you and the people you would pass them on.
It may be that the next two weeks you will not hear from me. I am having surgery. I am in
peace that the Lord will be with me and will guide the doctor so that everything will be fine.
Pray for me and I will be with you very soon and in good health.

Program Details:
-Each week-long session is different and is filled with a
variety of fun and interactive activities.
LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE**
-VBS is open to all children entering Pre-K-6th Grade as of September 2015
-Program Cost for one week: (includes 1 t-shirt and 1 water bottle) $75
-Program Cost for two weeks: (includes 2 t-shirts and 1 water bottle) $115
-Counselor In Training Program – open to 6th-7th graders Cost $25 for 1 week $35 for 2 weeks
(parents still must sign CIT’s in and out each day)
-Additional shirts can be purchased for $8 each.
-Drop off and pick up is in
Msgr. Kirwin Hall. Drop off is between 8:50-9:00 AM
-Pick up is at promptly at 1:00 PM
-Parents must sign their child in and out. Please be prompt in picking up your child.
-Each day, children will be provided with a snack and water.
-At the end of each week-long session, parents are invited to our show

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS: Are you aware that the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires ANYONE
18 YEARS OR OLDER IN ANY MINISTRY TO BE VIRTUS TRAINED AND HAVE A BACKGROUND
CHECK? A ministry includes Catechists, CYO Coaches, Liturgical Ministers, and all parish organization members. Check the Virtus Training Schedule and Register Online at www.drvc.org. Classes are offered by several
parishes throughout the diocese.
REGISTRATION OPEN: Registration materials for the 2015-16 school year have been mailed to all families
who had students enrolled in religion classes from Kindergarten to grade 7 during this past school year. Parents
who will be registering a child for the first time in our program should contact the Religious Education Office at
(516) 746-6585 x9404 for new student registration materials. Registration will remain open until July 10th.
NOTE: A copy of a child’s Baptismal Certificate must accompany the registration for any new students in order for the registration to be processed.

CATECHISTS NEEDED: The Religious Education Office is looking for individuals who are willing to serve
as teachers to pass on their Catholic Faith to students enrolled in our program. Prior experience is not necessary.
Training will be provided. Please give prayerful consideration to answering this call for teachers. For an application or further information, please call our office at (516) 746-6585 x9404.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: In addition to teachers, the Religious Education Office will need volunteers who
can serve the parish and our students in positions such as classroom aides, hall monitors, traffic control, aides,
substitute teachers, etc. Our school year runs from late September 2015 through early May 2016. For an application or further information, please call our office at (516) 746-6585 x9404.
SPECIAL NEEDS CATECHISTS WANTED: Is God tugging at your heart to help? There are wonderful children waiting for YOU to answer His Call! Please consider becoming a Special Needs Catechist for the upcoming
school year. No Prior experience is necessary. Training and support will be provided. For further information,

ATTENTION 8TH GRADE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: The Special Needs Program is looking for
volunteers! If you are available on Thursday afternoons after 4:30 PM and would like to get some experience
working with children, there is a special place for YOU to serve as a student aide. The commitment would be an
hour and a half each week. Service hour documentation, college recommendations, and scholarship letters are

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 2014-15 HOME SCHOOLED STUDENTS: Please return your child’s completed textbooks and worksheets by July 1st unless other arrangements have been made with the Religious Education Office. Your children will then receive credit for the last school year and be able to register for the next
grade. Outstanding Home School work delays the registration process and may limit your choices for placement.

7th AND 8th GRADE CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES: Please be sure to submit any outstanding
Confirmation Packet Projects to the Religious Education Office as soon as possible. June Mass Reflections
are due July 10th. Community Service Hours for the past school year must be completed by August
31st.
ATTENTION ALL CATECHISTS: Catechist Training Classes will be given throughout the summer.
All classes will begin at 7:15 PM and end by 9:15 PM in the Sts. Peter and Paul Room. Both sessions of
each class should be attended. Liturgy and Sacraments is recommended for all catechists. All new catechists are asked to take the Getting Started class. Methods classes focus on two year blocks and present
ideas that work well with respective age groups. This year, a training class for working with Special Needs
students has also been added. Please call the Religious Education Office at (516) 746-6585 x9404 to
register for these classes. Materials will be provided. All classes are open to all catechists or anyone
thinking of becoming a catechist.

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY
As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, “Everything has its origin in God's love, everything
is shaped by it, everything is directed towards it. Love is God's greatest gift to humanity; it is his promise and our
hope.”
FOOD PANTRY - PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEXT FOOD DRIVE
WILL BE HELD ON AUGUST 1ST & 2ND. If you would like to donate food items or personal
hygiene items, please bring the food donations to the back of Church or across the street to the
Parish Social Ministry Office. We also have a refrigerator for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread
and a freezer for ground beef, chicken cutlets and frozen pizzas. If you would like to donate
fresh vegetables from your garden this summer that would be wonderful! Items needed:
cereal, apple juice, cleaning products and baby wipes.
THE JOHN MCALLISTER MEN’S PRAYER GROUP: The men’s prayer group will not be meeting during
the summer and in the fall will be moving to THURSDAY MORNINGS following the 9:00 AM Mass! Enjoy the Summer!!
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of each
month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer
shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach
you. The next meeting will take place on Monday, July 13th. If you have some wool to donate to
this ministry, please bring it to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Please call our office if you
would like to receive a blessed prayer shawl or if you know of someone who would like one. If

PLEASE NOTE: The Parish Social Ministry will be open Monday – Thursday, 9AM – 3 PM and will be

attend the Virtus class.

ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA, Hicksville, NY– A Night at the Races will be held on July 18th in
Msgr. Tarrant Hall in St. Ignatius Loyola School on East Nicholai Street, Hicksville behind the
church. The school is handicapped accessible. Doors open at 6:30 PM, dinner is served at 7:00 PM
and races start at 7:45 PM. Cost is $15.00 per person. Dinner will be served buffet style and we

SEMINARY GOLF CLASSIC TO SUPPORT OUR SEMINARIANS-The Annual Seminary
Golf Classic will be held at the Huntington Crescent Club on Monday, July 13th. Special honorees for this event are Msgr. John J. McCann ’65, pastor of St. Mary’s, Manhasset. Also being
