Shenandoah Institute Music Art of and Nurture Spiritual Vitality Develop Musical Excellence Equip for Worship and Growth Y o u r P i l g r i m a g e i n F a i t h a n d S k i l l What is Music Art? Shenandoah Institute of and Vision Our calling at Shenandoah Institute of Music and Art is to join Jesus Christ in reconciling all things to Himself. This includes training the creative impulse that is central to our created being. We recognize that this impulse–the artistic bent– all too often is indeed bent and twisted. We are called to be holy sub-creators, modeling how redeemed people are creative in the patterns God intended. This is never to be art for its own sake; it must always be a means of communicating the essential truth and beauty of Jesus Christ, Christianity, and the realities of humanity. Essential in any field of legitimate Christian work is a heart that passionately wants to serve our Lord. A pure heart, however, is not born with the ability to perceive all the intricacy in our surrounding world. The mind needs the disciplines of training, patience and humility to be productive in the Kingdom. This is an essential–and often neglected–part of Jesus’ command to love our God. We are to love Him not only with the heart, but also with the mind, and the fruit of our labor. Our vision is to nurture both the mind and the heart, to equip people for competent music and artistic ministry, for the building up of the Kingdom of God, to the glory of Jesus Christ, to the edification of the saints, and to the joy of the artist. Values We strive to ensure that every activity validates the compatibility of musical excellence and Anabaptist discipleship. The institute is Anabaptist in theology and practice with a conservative interpretation of Scripture applied. This is unapologetically taught, discussed and modeled by our faculty, pastors and staff, all of whom are born-again Christians. Each student is charged to serve their local communities in the task of reconciling all things to God through faith and work. Spirituality It is our philosophy that success in life is only truly obtained by being surrounded by and consumed with God’s Word. That’s why three days a week begin with a challenging and reflective message in Chapel, and end with group Q&A to contemplate the whole person in its functional relationship with Jesus Christ and His Kingdom of reconciliation. Fellowship & Recreation One of the true hallmarks of our Anabaptist faith is the regular practice of fellowship and participation in one another’s lives. For students, that translates into hours of discussion, enrichment and recreation. Along with musical and artistic studies, students are given ample time to relax with others and participate in activities outside the formal study hall. Our staff organizes events designed to make the intensity of study sustainable. Students can be themselves, whether in athletic activities or playing games in the lounge. Relaxing walks on the surrounding campus reveal peaceful locations for reading and quiet reflection. Relationships With students attending from all parts of U.S.A. and Canada the opportunities for increased cultural awareness and acceptance are abundant. Our students will find joy and lasting relationships through participating in the activities developed in the institute. From the formal classes and worship services to the informal recreation, the results are the same: lifetime friendships, countless memories, and most importantly, the musician artist is better prepared to serve God and His people. Academia Shenandoah Institute of Music and Art is an ongoing development. The vision for an Anabaptist school of this type was what led to the development of the first summer music camp in 2006. Since that first music camp, many people have expressed interest in being able to study music and art for a longer term with more intensive instruction. The student will participate in regular and extensive research and assignments at college level. Class days are Monday–Friday; with hours 8 A.M.–7 P.M. The student will be assessed for accuracy, effort, and quality. As a part of the overall development we are offering coursework in other fields of worship and art as well.
