Together, families, communities
and Calgary’s city employees
worked tirelessly to clean up and
save what could be saved.
And we’re still on the job, with a
massive replanting program that
will take years to complete.
Working for a greener future
We’ll continue to do the work you
rely on us to do — and to stand up
for the services that make Calgary
such a great place to live.

You can help, too, with complete
maintenance into October,
including watering your trees
regularly to protect them from
dry-out and damage.
Thank you from
your city workers.
Remember
this?
In all, 250,000 city trees and 1.5 million
private trees — damaged or destroyed
in the September snowstorm of 2014.
It was the worst pre-autumn
snowstorm to hit Calgary in 130 years.
Action by city workers during
and after the snowstorm was
one of the reasons you rated our
services so highly. And for that
we thank you.

Guides in Our Community
Would your daughter enjoy outdoor adventures, trying
new activities, meeting new friends, and taking on leadership responsibilities?? Perhaps your daughter would
like to be a Guide. In Guides, all our activities are done
with games, skits, and hands-on learning. There are
Guide programs for all ages, from Sparks to Brownies to
Rangers, starting in September to early June.
Our local Guides meet Tuesday evenings, for young
women in Grades 4, 5 and 6. Here are some of our plans
for the fall … exploring nature with hikes in local parks,
a sleepover at Frank Slide, a service project marking
Storm drains with Yellow Fish, and selling Mint Cookies.
Throughout the year we will challenge a variety of
Guide Badges (Fitness, Naturalist, Engineering,… ), have
guests teach us new skills, do service projects with Inn
from the Cold and Meals on Wheels, visit the Grain Museum and a Fire Hall, and hold a Sleepover at Kingsland
Community and a June Camp.
Please contact me if your daughter in interested in
Guides.

Prior to the introduction of Fair Entry, Calgarians who
wanted to access any of the fee subsidy programs at
The City would have to apply and prove their eligibility
separately for each program.
Brookfield and the Community want to hear from
you; what would you like to see.
Fair Entry: Questions & Answers May 2015
What programs and services can Calgarians qualify for
through this application process? Through the use of a

• Low Income Transit Pass Programs for adults and youth

Applications can be made by mail, by fax, by drop-off at
any City Recreation facility, in-person at two locations,
and in the fall, through a new online application system.
By contacting 311, customers can obtain information
on any of the subsidy programs and get an application
form to begin the process.
How often do people need to re-apply? Typically, applicants will re-apply every 12 months.

Have you heard about Calgary AfterSchool program? Calgary AfterSchool offers fun, safe, supervised and quality
after school programs between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00
pm when kids are out of school, but parents may not yet be
home. The program is a collaborative effort between the City
of Calgary and community partners for kids 6 to 16 years of
age. Kids participate in activities to help them gain physical,
social, leadership and creative skills. To check out the full listing of programs visit calgary.ca/afterschool.
The summer held so many great community and cultural
events and activities; I hope you enjoyed some with your
family and friends. Good news - there are more to come! Be a
part of Culture Days in Calgary. On September 25th visit Olympic Plaza and the Stephen Avenue Walk from 3:30 to 8:00 pm
for a free, family-friendly celebration that kicks off a vibrant
three-day province-wide calendar of events. Culture Days is
a pan-Canadian movement to raise awareness, accessibility,
participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts
and cultural life of their communities. Visit ab.culturedays.ca
and calgary.ca/culturedays for more information.
I will be in Fredericton, New Brunswick early September for
Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) meetings representing the City of Calgary. The FCM is leading the way
to ensure that municipalities’ concerns are being heard on
the national level. I have been a board member now for five
years in a number of capacities, but a specific focus of mine
has been affordable housing. The federal government participates in funding approximately 6,700 units of affordable
housing for Calgarians in need. Currently, that money is set
to expire over the next few years putting those units and
their residents in jeopardy. We need to ensure that this funding remains intact as we move forward.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I am trying
out a seasonal newsletter to email you information on news
and developments in Ward 11. If you would like to receive it,
sign up at www.ward11calgary.ca, or by emailing my office at
[email protected]. Feel free to connect with me on Twitter @
