DELIVERED MONTHLY TO 3,500 HOUSEHOLDS KINGSLAND POST your SEPTEMBER 2015 THE OFFICIAL KINGSLAND COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER KINGSLAND GOES BOWLING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 MOVIE IN THE PARK SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 www.kingslandcommunity.ca Together, families, communities and Calgary’s city employees worked tirelessly to clean up and save what could be saved. And we’re still on the job, with a massive replanting program that will take years to complete. Working for a greener future We’ll continue to do the work you rely on us to do — and to stand up for the services that make Calgary such a great place to live. Kingsland Community Association 505-78 Ave SW Calgary, AB – T2V 0T3 Phone: 403.255.1400 | Fax: 403.255.1407 [email protected] www.kingslandcommunity.ca You can help, too, with complete maintenance into October, including watering your trees regularly to protect them from dry-out and damage. Thank you from your city workers. Remember this? In all, 250,000 city trees and 1.5 million private trees — damaged or destroyed in the September snowstorm of 2014. It was the worst pre-autumn snowstorm to hit Calgary in 130 years. Action by city workers during and after the snowstorm was one of the reasons you rated our services so highly. And for that we thank you. • City parks services . . . . . . . . 95%* • Disaster planning and response . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .95% • 311 information service . . . 94% * Very or somewhat satisfied 2014 Citizen Satisfaction Survey Kingsland Goes Bowling! 6 Movie in the Park 7 Community Calendar 8 Brookfield Development 13 Octoberfest 14 SWCRC 15 NEWSLETTER AD SALES Calgary’s city employees Making your city work for you Great News Publishing Ltd. 403.720.0762 | 403.263.3044 [email protected] | www.great-news.ca GREAT NEWS PUBLISHING HAS BEEN PROUDLY SERVING KINGSLAND FOR 1 YEAR! Calgary AfterSchool offers fun, safe, supervised and quality after school programs between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 pm when kids are out of school, but parents may not yet be home. The program is a collaborative effort between the City of Calgary and community partners for kids 6 to 16 years of age. Kids participate in activities to help them gain physical, social, leadership and creative skills. To check out the full listing of programs visit calgary.ca/afterschool. The summer held so many great community and cultural events and activities; I hope you enjoyed some with your family and friends. Good news - there are more to come! Be a part of Culture Days in Calgary. On September 25th visit Olympic Plaza and the Stephen Avenue Walk from 3:30 to 8:00 pm for a free, family-friendly celebration that kicks off a vibrant three-day province-wide calendar of events. Culture Days is a pan-Canadian movement to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Visit ab.culturedays.ca and calgary.ca/culturedays for more information. I will be in Fredericton, New Brunswick early September for Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) meetings representing the City of Calgary. The FCM is leading the way to ensure that municipalities’ concerns are being heard on the national level. I have been a board member now for five years in a number of capacities, but a specific focus of mine has been affordable housing. The federal government participates in funding approximately 6,700 units of affordable housing for Calgarians in need. Currently, that money is set to expire over the next few years putting those units and their residents in jeopardy. We need to ensure that this funding remains intact as we move forward. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I am trying out a seasonal newsletter to email you information on news and developments in Ward 11. If you would like to receive it, sign up at www.ward11calgary.ca, or by emailing my office at [email protected]. Feel free to connect with me on Twitter @ bpincott, or on Facebook at Brian Pincott, Councillor Ward 11. BUSINESS CLASSIFIEDS YOGA WITH JANICE PIET: Ongoing classes starting Wednesday, September 9th.
