Calgary Board of Education By-election
Let’s enjoy a sunny day wandering our community and
enjoying one another’s offerings…whether that’s garage
sale items, home business items like jewelry or Tupperware,
homemade goodies or your kids’ lemonade stand!
• Eligible electors will vote to elect their Public School Board
Trustee for Wards 11 & 13 on Monday, April 13, 2015.
• You are eligible to vote if:
o you are at least 18 years old;
o are a Canadian citizen;
o have resided in Alberta since October 13, 2014;
o are a resident on Election Day;
– Of the City of Calgary Ward 11 or 13; and
– Of the Calgary Board of Education; and
o provide one of the authorized pieces of identification.
You can set up on your property or put up a table outside at
the community hall. You are responsible for your own signage minus a map that will be given out at the hall marking all properties with sales. $2 charge/household to cover
map photocopying charges.
All eligible electors can vote at the Advance Vote, April 2, 7 & 8.
Blind voter templates are available at the Advance Vote only.
I hope April proves to be as beautiful as February was.
Hockey rink had a very short season. A big thanks to
Pete Mitchell and Reg Clowe for their efforts to maintain ice until Winter Party on February 7th. Good job by
Meghan and her team for organizing a successful event.
Traffic north of 69th Avenue still continues to cause the
committee lots of headaches. So remember pedestrians;
catch the eye of the driver before crossing the street.
Work continues on converting lighting inside and outside to LEDs. Rink lighting has become very important
as Enmax has discontinued the Rink lighter program
which subsidized cost of lighting the rinks.
Remember, volunteer for a committee, most are short
term commitments and only a few hours a month.
Thanks to all that do.
May is membership month; Cris will be calling for help.
Let’s get lots of you out there and decrease the load on
the team.
Saturday, June 6th from 9-2 pm
Thanks,
RSVP to Meghan at [email protected] or 587-8946917 if you are a seller
Ken Reimer, [email protected]
Just going to wander and shop? Come to the community
hall at 505-78th Ave SW and pick up a map for all the selling
houses. There will be tables at the hall too to browse!
**we will be collecting hockey and figure skates in
preparation for a Skate Exchange at 2016’s Skating
Party. Please drop off skates at the community hall
on this day.
A City of Calgary By-election brochure will be delivered to
every household in Wards 11 & 13 in late March.

Planning & Development Committee report –
Brandy MacInnis
The planning committee met on February 12, 2015. The
items discussed were:
1) Brookfield Development was in attendance to discuss their consideration of the Market on Macleod site.
Brookfield is in their due diligence phase, which ends
in June. They are considering the purchase of the Market site, for redevelopment into multi-family residential
and some commercial uses. A site design has not yet
been contemplated but the representatives will keep in
touch with KCA and update the Planning Committee at
the appropriate times. This site is within the redevelopment area planned in the Kingsland Community Plan;
we anticipate and are supportive of a mixed-use development in this location. We will continue to work with
Brookfield if they pursue their purchase of the site, to
advise of community needs and concerns as they move
forward with their land use redesignation and development permit applications.
2) A Traffic Study Application was submitted in early
February, requesting a traffic study be completed by the
City of Calgary for the roads at 67, 68 and 69th Avenues
SW between Elbow Drive SW and 4A Street SW. This application was a supplement to the application submitted in 2011 to further our need for the community to
be looked atby the Cityin the 2015 work program.100
signatures were on our petition to the City requesting
traffic management options for this area in Kingsland.
Our community is currently being considered and we
will know more in March.
New items:
A land use redesignation application has been submitted to the City of Calgary by Michel Berdnikoff for the
parcel south of the Retina Clinic on Elbow Drive SW. The
application would allow for a multi-residential development that could result in up to 12 units. KCA has re~continued on page 12~

COMMITTEE REPORTS CONT’D
sponded to the applicant in theMarch of 2014, indicating
that we would not consider a redesignation of this site
and that our Kingsland Community Plan identifies the
parcel as a single family use. KCA has heard from several
concerned residents and we will be reaching out to residents that could be affected by the redesignation and
eventual multi-family building at this location. We will be
putting together a questionnaire for impacted residents
and a petition for those who have concerns. Canvassers will be in the area shortly to request your input. The
questionnaire and petition will be left in your mailbox
with options for your response. Residents with concerns
are asked to contact Ms. Brandy MacInnis at [email protected] to discuss your thoughts. We would
appreciate it if correspondence already sent to the City
could also be forwarded to Brandy so we are aware of
the responses to the City. Councillor Pincott should also
be forwarded your concerns atinfo@[email protected]

Ken requested a budget of $2,000.00 for drawings for

Electrical work: Exterior lights have been done for a total
of $275.63, also bar lighting repair for a total of $241.50
these items have been completed and paid for.
COMMITTEE REPORTS CONT’D

total of $690.00. Ann felt that we had bulbs left in storage
and will check. - This item held over to next meeting.

Head injuries are a leading cause of serious injury and
death to children riding bicycles*. Most injuries occur
when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object,
or collides with another cyclist/pedestrian. Remember
– it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18
must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all
ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line
skating, or cycling.
Getting informed
• Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious
injury, or even save a life;
• Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or death;
• Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet;
• Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash,
even if it appears undamaged.
Getting started
• Allow children to assist when buying their helmet. Cyclists who choose their own helmet are more likely to
wear them;
• Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride
tricycles need to wear helmets;
• Parents must lead by example – always wear a helmet
when cycling.
Getting the right fit
• Take the time to properly fit and adjust your helmet to
ensure maximum protection in case of a crash;
• When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not tilted up, or down over the forehead;
• Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test
the fit, the helmet should not fall off when you shake
your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened;
• Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly
forward from the ears;
• Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin
strap when it is fastened;
• Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the
helmet. They will help improve the overall fit, comfort
and safety.

Preschool News
In the month of February, we had time to celebrate our
friends and families! We celebrated Valentine’s Day by
making valentines and delivering them to our classmates mailboxes. It was very exciting to see our full
mailboxes!
We continued our study of the Arctic and Arctic Animals. We talked about how polar bears were in trouble
because the ice is melting so quickly in the Arctic. We
wondered what we could do to help. We heard about
“Wear a Sweater” day from our friends at Chinook Park
School and decided that it would be a good challenge
for us too. On February 4th, we turned down our thermostat at school and we all put our sweaters on. We
didn’t even notice that it was cool in our classroom.
Maybe we should do that every day.
We have been continuing to mix colours and creating
new ones. We are now working on colour collages to
decorate our classroom.
We have been reading about the artist, Ted Harrison,
and looking at hisamazing art work. He uses many lines
and colours in his art of the Yukon, and we are trying to
make art in the same style.
We will be keeping an eye out for those tricky and pesky
leprechauns in March.
We still have a few spaces in our program for fall 2015
so call the preschool if you are interested. For more information about the Preschool contact us at www.kingslandcommunitypreschool.com or call 403-258-1308

Workshop
Kingsland is hosting a community workshop. Come together in small working groups to talk to other residents about a plan for Kingsland.
What we hear from you will direct the
Board’s work plan for the next four years.
• Where should we rebuild our next playground(s)?
• Should we change our Community Plan to allow
for secondary suites in the single family areas of
Kingsland?
• What renovations should we undertake at the
Community Hall?
• What should we include in our community vision
and mission statements?
• Do we need a new logo and what should it look like?

COBS Bread Kingsland Plaza
Kingsland Community
I
t’s 3am, and Joel Sibuyo, Bakery Manager at COBS
Bread Kingsland Plaza, is wide awake. He’s at the bakery, measuring, mixing, and baking fresh bread for
his customers to enjoy in just a few short hours once
the bakery opens its doors at 8am.
Joel hasn’t always been a baker, but he dreams of one
day being the franchise owner of a COBS bakery which
he will run with his wife, Karolina. Their daughter, Sierra,
is only two, but perhaps in the future she will join her
parents at the bakery. Having the right team is very important to Joel-with over 14 years of retail management
experience, he knows how important it is to deliver a
high-quality product paired with a delightful customer
experience.
The recipes that are used by Joel and COBS Bread bakers have been passed down, refined, and sometimes revisited. Dedicated to using traditional baking methods,
you can trust that the Sourdough is authentic as they
come, using a real levain starter. It is a 20-hour labour of
love. Similarly, the French Baguette is authentic as you
would find in a Parisian bakery, given that our technical baker journeyed to France to learn and develop the
recipe. Baking it is a process in excess of 16 hours, allowing for proper fermentation to develop the fullest
flavour profile.
Joel, Karolina, and the team at COBS Kingsland Plaza
are proud to be your local baker and welcome you to
come by to meet the team. There is no greater honour
than being a part of the meals that nourishes families
and we hope you will allow us to delight you.
This month, Joel and his team are all about the bunsHot Cross Buns, that is. The Hot Cross Buns made at every COBS Bread bakery from now until Easter are a staff
and customer favourite. With three flavours - Traditional
Fruit, Cranberry Orange and Chocolate Chip, everyone
has a favourite. “They’re delicious by themselves, but I
highly recommend toasting them,” says Joel. “When that
butter melts on a toasty Hot Cross Bun… there aren’t
many better treats.”
Fresh bread tastes the best, and that is why Joel doesn’t
sell the bread he baked today, tomorrow. All leftover
bread is donated to local charities at the end of the day.
This is part of COBS Bread’s Freshness Promise - that
any unsold product at the end of the day is donated.
This allows COBS to give back to the community and
start from scratch every morning.
Speaking of “scratch”- all of COBS traditional and artisan
bread is baked from scratch, ingredient by ingredient
and contain no added preservatives, colouring, sugar
or dairy. Breads containing whole wheat are baked with
100% whole grain flour. A diet rich in whole grain can
be helpful in maintaining a healthy heart, managing

Hello – It is hard to believe how fast time has passed since I
became your MLA in the last provincial election. Thank you to
everyone who voted and continues to participate in the public
discussion regarding the future of Alberta.
I continue to be amazed by the variety and depth of queries that
I become involved with as your MLA.
One of my favourite tasks as an MLA is researching and talking
to experts about issues and questions that are brought to me by
constituents. You keep me on my toes!
Thank you to those of you who gave up a beautiful Sunday afternoon to attend the Budget Consultation in Haysboro on February 22nd. It was wonderful to see so many new faces and I sincerely appreciated hearing the various points of view regarding
Alberta’s financial situation. By the time you receive this newsletter, the 2015 Budget will have been tabled and we will know the
outcome of the conversations that were held with thousands of
Albertans. I sincerely thank those of you who took the time to
complete the on-line survey. I am confident that Premier Prentice is listening to the views and opinions of the constituents in
Calgary-Glenmore.
A few questions were asked about how to find information
about government departments. The www.alberta.ca website
contains an enormous amount of information.
Some of the items available include:
• full budgets for every department and Ministry
• Actual spending and revenues for each department and Ministry
• The $ amount given to each school board in Alberta
• The waiting list for types of surgeries and individual surgeons
in Alberta
• Public disclosure of all travel and expenses by Department staff
and officials
• Alberta Work Search (ALIS) which connects employers to potential employees
• In addition, www.Assembly.ab.ca provides:
• Information on the status of all Bills in the Assembly
• The ability to watch question period live when the Assembly
is in Session and the ability to listen to all committee meetings
(past or live)
• Transcripts of all discussion in the House
• MLA spending reports (for each individual MLA) and compensation

by the City of Calgary Parks department and contains supplies for ten people. Then fill in the form on the City of
Calgary website (www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Volunteer/tlckits.aspx) and City staff will come and remove
the trash you’ve gathered. Be a steward for your neighbourhood and help keep Ward 11 beautiful!
Volunteer registration is also open until mid-April for
the City of Calgary’s Pathway and River Cleanup scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 3. This year marks the
48th annual event and the 2900 volunteers will cover approximately 200km of river pathways, many of which flow
through our ward! Anyone aged 12 or older who is fit and
willing to get dirty is welcome, but those between 12-16
must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Join the
thousands of Calgarians who have participated in this inspiring event and show your community spirit!
As always, I encourage constituents of Ward 11 to contact
me with any questions or concerns. I email out information regarding upcoming events, City programs and opportunities to provide input into the City’s public engagement programs relevant to Ward 11 residents. Due to the
new anti-spam laws you need to specifically request our
email updates; you can sign up at anytime by emailing my
office at [email protected]. I also encourage you to visit
my website, www.ward11calgary.ca, for additional information that may be of interest to you.
the office to speak with Kim or Pam. They use the website constantly and they may be able to find what you are looking for.
Save the date: my 3rd annual BBQ will be held on June 20th at
South Glenmore Park from noon to 2pm. Hope to see you there!
