The credit union movement began 160 years ago
with a simple but deep-seated idea… that common
everyday people could bond together, like neighbors,
to improve their financial well-being. This people-centric cooperative idea
spread across the world, and credit unions flourished, especially during times
of economic hardship and uncertainty.
During the Great Depression, scores of ordinary Americans—farmers, teachers,
small business owners—found themselves without access to trusted banking
services, so they banded together to form their own not-for-profit financial
cooperatives. Today there are more than 200 million credit union members
worldwide—over 100 million right here in America!
At its most basic function, a credit union is people of a common bond pooling
their money to provide each other with trustworthy and affordable financial
services—a credit union is literally people helping people. This is why we
celebrate International Credit Union day every October! This simple idea
empowers people, wherever they are in the world or in life, to take control of
their own financial future.
When looking back on some of our nation’s, and the world’s, recent financial
challenges – the economic downturn, uncertainty of the stock market and the
continuing greed within Wall Street, if ever there was a time to embrace the
credit union cooperative difference…it’s now!
Celebrate With Us
Join us Thursday, October 15 as
we celebrate International Credit
Union Day (ICU Day) with credit
unions around the world.
Since 1948, on the third Thursday
of every October, credit unions
have celebrated a simple but
radical idea—that by working
together, people can improve
their financial well-being.
In many ways, a cooperative is a most unique and remarkable non-profit
business, we operate solely for our members’ benefit. All income is given
back to members through higher savings rates, lower loan rates and new or
improved services. Our very own Sun Federal mission and values align with the
seven cooperative principles:
1. Voluntary Membership: offering services to people willing to accept the
responsibilities and benefits of membership.
2. Democratic Member Control: Every person has a voice. When you attend
your credit union’s annual meeting or vote for the board of directors,
you’re exercising your member-owner control.
3. Members’ Economic Participation: members own the credit union and
contribute to the capital reserves of the cooperative.
4. Autonomy and Independence: self-help cooperative organizations
controlled by members.

Handling Market Volatility
If Ever...

5. Education, Training and
Information: peoplecentric education and
training for all members,
elected representatives,
and employees so they can
contribute effectively to the
greater good.
Conventional wisdom says
that what goes up must
come down. But even if
you view market volatility
as a normal occurrence, it can
be tough to handle when your
money is at stake. Though
there’s no foolproof way to
handle the ups and downs of the
stock market, the following tips
can help.
Don’t put your eggs all in one basket. Diversifying your investment portfolio
helps to manage market volatility.
Focus on the forest, not on the trees. As the market goes up and down, it’s
easy to become too focused on day-to-day returns. Instead, keep your eyes on
your long-term investing goals and your overall portfolio if you have years to
invest.
Look before you leap. When the market goes down and investment losses pile
up, you may be tempted to pull out of the stock market altogether and look
for less volatile investments. But before you leap into a different investment
strategy, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.
Look for the silver lining. The silver lining of a down market is the opportunity
to buy shares of stock at lower prices. Consider dollar-cost averaging.
Don’t stick your head in the sand. While focusing too much on short-term
gains or losses is unwise, so is ignoring your investments. You should check
your portfolio at least once a year--more frequently if the market is particularly
volatile or when there have been significant changes in your life.

6. Cooperation Among
Cooperatives: credit
unions protect and expand
the interests of ordinary
people. This kind of onefor-all and all-for-one idea
is unique among non-profit
organizations.
7. Concern for Community:
work for the sustainable
development of families
and communities, including
people of modest means.
When we wish you a Happy
International Credit Union Day,
please know that we’re thanking
you for belonging to a movement
that’s helping families,

tomorrow.
