my sister
I Primi Passi
Sophie used two Italian words to mean ‘my’.
Mio/mia
Mio and mia both mean ‘my’. But they are used in slightly
different ways.
Look at how mio and mia are used in the following examples. Pay
attention to the nouns that follow them:
Column 1
Column 2
mio padre
mia madre
mio fratello
mia sorella
What’s the difference between the nouns in Column 1 and the nouns
in Column 2?
The nouns in Column 1 (padre, fratello) are masculine. The nouns in
Column 2 (madre, sorella) are feminine.
Can you work out when mio is used, and when mia is used?
Write your answer in English on the lines below.
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
The answer is at the bottom of the page.
Mio is the masculine form of ‘my’ and mia is the feminine.
Answer: Mio goes before masculine nouns, and mia goes before
feminine nouns.
Unit 2 Part 1

La fotografia di Sophie
In the next dialogue Gianna and Sophie are talking about la
fotografia di Sophie (Sophie’s photo).
Ascolta!
Listen to the dialogue, La fotografia di Sophie, on Track 2. At the
same time, read the text below.
8
Sophie:
Questo è mio padre. Si chiama David, o
Davide in italiano. È bello, no?
Gianna:
Sì. Chi è questa? Tua madre?
Sophie:
Sì, si chiama Elizabeth, o Elisabetta in italiano.
Gianna:
È tuo fratello questo? Come si chiama?
Sophie:
Si chiama Peter, o Pietro in italiano.
Gianna:
Che carino!
Sophie:
Carino! È cattivo!
Gianna:
Quanti anni ha?
Sophie:
Pietro ha due anni.
Gianna:
E questa è tua sorella. Come si chiama?
Sophie:
Mia sorella si chiama Catherine, o Caterina in
italiano. Ha sette anni.
Gianna:
Che bella famiglia!
I Primi Passi
Let’s practise saying the new words.

Si and sì
You may have noticed these two words in the dialogue: si and sì.
In the expression si chiama, si literally (word-for-word) means
‘himself’ or ‘herself’.
Did you notice the second word—sì—has an accent? This is not a
typing error! These two words have completely different
meanings.
Sì—with the accent—means ‘yes’.
So, the accent is important, because it changes the meaning of the
word.
For tips on typing accents, refer back to Unit 1 Part 3 or the Unit 2
Overview.
Unit 2 Part 1
9
Tuo/tua
Tuo and tua both mean ‘your’. They follow the same rule as mio
and mia. Tuo is the masculine form of ‘your’ and tua is the
feminine.
How would you say ‘your father’ and ‘your mother’ in Italian?
Write your answers on the lines below.
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
The answer is at the bottom of the page.
Questo/questa
When Sophie was showing Gianna the people in her family she
used the expression Questo è mio padre. Questo means ‘this’ in
English. Did you notice another way of saying ‘this’ in the
dialogue?
You may have also noticed Gianna saying Chi è questa? (Who is
this?). Questa also means 'this'. Think about why there are two
words for ‘this’ as you look at the two examples below.
Questo è mio padre.
Questa è mia madre.
Circle the correct Italian word for 'this' in these examples.
1
Questo / questa è mio fratello.
2
Questo / questa è mia sorella.
The answer is at the bottom of the page.
Answers: tuo padre = your father, tua madre = your mother
Questo è mio fratello. Questa è mia sorella.

Si chiama
You know that mi chiamo … means ‘my name is …’. In the dialogue
La fotografia di Sophie, you heard the expression Si chiama ….
Ascolta!
Listen to how si chiama is used in the dialogue La fotografia di Sophie
on Track 4. At the same time, read the text below.
Sophie:
Questo è mio padre. Si chiama David, o
Davide in italiano. È bello, no?
Gianna:
Sì. Chi è questa? Tua madre?
Sophie:
Sì, si chiama Elizabeth, o Elisabetta in italiano.
Si chiama … means ‘his name is …’ or ‘her name is …’. Or,
literally ‘he calls himself’ or ‘she calls herself’. You can use the
same expression for males and females this time!
You know that Come ti chiami? means ‘What is your name?’.
In the dialogue La fotografia di Sophie, Gianna asked the question
Come si chiama? when asking about Sophie’s brother .
What do you think Come si chiama? means? Write your answer in
English on the line below.

I Primi Passi
My brothers and sisters
Let’s look at the question Hai fratelli o sorelle? again. It was the first
question Sophie asked in the dialogue La fotografia di Gianna.
Although it’s a new expression work out what Hai fratelli o sorelle?
means. Use the Italian you already know and some other clues to
work it out:
•
fratelli is very similar to fratello (brother)
•
o means ‘or’
•
sorelle is almost the same as sorella (sister)
•
the question mark (?) tells us that it’s a question.
Write what Hai fratelli o sorelle? means in English on the line
below.
___________________________________________________________
The answer is at the bottom of the page.
Let’s practise saying Hai fratelli o sorelle?.
Ascolta e ripeti!
Listen to the speakers on Track 8. Repeat in the pauses provided.
Hai fratelli o sorelle?
Practise asking this question a few times. Make sure you
pronounce the endings of fratelli and sorelle correctly. Saying
different endings changes their meanings.
Keep listening to Track 8 and listen to how Gianna answers
Sophie’s question.
Sophie:
Hai fratelli o sorelle?
Gianna:
Sì, ho un fratello.
Gianna says Sì, ho un fratello (yes, I have one brother).
Answer: Well done if you worked out that Hai fratelli o sorelle? means
‘Do you have brothers or sisters?’ Congratulazioni!

Singular or plural
Singular
refers to one.
Plural refers
to more than
one
As you know, the ending of an Italian word can be
important. With nouns, the ending can tell you
whether it is masculine or feminine. Usually, the
ending can also tell you whether the word is singular or plural.
Can you work out whether fratello and fratelli are singular or plural?
Firstly, you’ve seen fratello and fratelli in these examples.
Sì, ho un fratello.
______________________________________
Sì, ho due fratelli.
______________________________________
Sì, ho tre fratelli.
______________________________________
Write what each example means in English on the lines above.
The numbers that come before fratello and fratelli should give you
a hint.
Now work out whether sorella and sorelle are singular or plural.
Write the English meanings of these examples on the lines below.
Sì, ho una sorella.
______________________________________
Sì, ho due sorelle.
______________________________________
Sì, ho quattro sorelle. ______________________________________

What if your family is made up of people not in the previous list?
You’ll need to find out how to say different words.
Come si dice … ?
If you want to ask someone how to say something in Italian, you
use the expression Come si dice … in italiano?.
Let’s practise this.
Ascolta e ripeti!
Listen to Track 13 and repeat in the pauses provided.
Come si dice ‘grandfather’ in italiano?
Si dice ‘nonno’.
Come si dice ‘grandmother’ in italiano?

the stepsister
It’s your turn to talk about your family.
Go to the exercises section and complete Exercise 1.1.
Unit 1 Part 4, you learnt about indefinite articles (un, uno, una).
Now let’s look at definite articles.
The definite article
In the dialogue La fotografia di Gianna you heard the
expressions:
A definite
article is a
word that
means ‘the’.
It refers to a
specific noun
E questo è il gatto Romolo.
Questa è la torta di compleanno?
Il and la are called definite articles and they are used
a lot in the Italian language.
Think about why there are two ways of saying ‘the’ in Italian.
Unit 2 Part 1
23
Look back at the two expressions from La fotografia di Gianna.
questo è il gatto
questa è la torta
You know that questo is masculine. Questa is feminine.
There is a definite article for masculine nouns and a definite article
for feminine nouns.
Which definite article (il or la) is used for masculine nouns and
which one is used for feminine nouns? Write your response in
English on the line below.
__________________________________________________________
Check your answer with the examples in the table below.
Feminine
Masculine
la famiglia
il compleanno
la torta
il gatto
la sorella
il fratello
There is one more definite article you need to know at this stage.
For nouns that begin with a vowel you use the
definite article l’. Look at the following examples.
l’italiano
the Italian (male)
l’italiana
the Italian (female)
Vowels are
the letters
a, e, i, o, u.
The definite articles you have learnt so far are all singular.
Here is a summary of singular definite articles.
Singular definite article
Use
il
Before masculine nouns
la
Before feminine nouns
l’
Before any singular noun beginning
with a vowel
Now that you have learnt the rule for definite articles you can
work out which one to use with nouns you don’t know.
