She’s labelled the photos in Italian because Gianna doesn’t speak English. La famiglia di Sophie Here are the photos of la famiglia di Sophie (Sophie’s family). Ascolta! Listen to Sophie read out the labels on Track 1. As you listen, look at the photos and try to work out what the labels mean. Unit 2 Part 1 5 Next to each English phrase below, write the matching Italian phrase from the photo. me _______________________________________ my father _______________________________________ my mother _______________________________________ my brother _______________________________________ my sister _______________________________________ Check your answers with the pictures below. 6 mio padre my father mia madre my mother mio fratello my brother mia sorella my sister I Primi Passi Sophie used two Italian words to mean ‘my’. Mio/mia Mio and mia both mean ‘my’. But they are used in slightly different ways. Look at how mio and mia are used in the following examples. Pay attention to the nouns that follow them: Column 1 Column 2 mio padre mia madre mio fratello mia sorella What’s the difference between the nouns in Column 1 and the nouns in Column 2? The nouns in Column 1 (padre, fratello) are masculine. The nouns in Column 2 (madre, sorella) are feminine. Can you work out when mio is used, and when mia is used? Write your answer in English on the lines below. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ The answer is at the bottom of the page. Mio is the masculine form of ‘my’ and mia is the feminine. Answer: Mio goes before masculine nouns, and mia goes before feminine nouns. Unit 2 Part 1 7 La fotografia di Sophie In the next dialogue Gianna and Sophie are talking about la fotografia di Sophie (Sophie’s photo). Ascolta! Listen to the dialogue, La fotografia di Sophie, on Track 2. At the same time, read the text below. 8 Sophie: Questo è mio padre. Si chiama David, o Davide in italiano. È bello, no? Gianna: Sì. Chi è questa? Tua madre? Sophie: Sì, si chiama Elizabeth, o Elisabetta in italiano. Gianna: È tuo fratello questo? Come si chiama? Sophie: Si chiama Peter, o Pietro in italiano. Gianna: Che carino! Sophie: Carino! È cattivo! Gianna: Quanti anni ha? Sophie: Pietro ha due anni. Gianna: E questa è tua sorella. Come si chiama? Sophie: Mia sorella si chiama Catherine, o Caterina in italiano. Ha sette anni. Gianna: Che bella famiglia! I Primi Passi Let’s practise saying the new words. Ascolta e ripeti! Listen to the new vocabulary on Track 3. Repeat in the pauses provided. la fotografia the photo questo/questa this o or bello/bella handsome/beautiful tuo/tua your Che carino! How cute! cattivo naughty Che bella famiglia! What a great family! Si and sì You may have noticed these two words in the dialogue: si and sì. In the expression si chiama, si literally (word-for-word) means ‘himself’ or ‘herself’. Did you notice the second word—sì—has an accent? This is not a typing error! These two words have completely different meanings. Sì—with the accent—means ‘yes’. So, the accent is important, because it changes the meaning of the word. For tips on typing accents, refer back to Unit 1 Part 3 or the Unit 2 Overview. Unit 2 Part 1 9 Tuo/tua Tuo and tua both mean ‘your’. They follow the same rule as mio and mia. Tuo is the masculine form of ‘your’ and tua is the feminine. How would you say ‘your father’ and ‘your mother’ in Italian? Write your answers on the lines below. __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ The answer is at the bottom of the page. Questo/questa When Sophie was showing Gianna the people in her family she used the expression Questo è mio padre. Questo means ‘this’ in English. Did you notice another way of saying ‘this’ in the dialogue? You may have also noticed Gianna saying Chi è questa? (Who is this?). Questa also means 'this'. Think about why there are two words for ‘this’ as you look at the two examples below. Questo è mio padre. Questa è mia madre. Circle the correct Italian word for 'this' in these examples. 1 Questo / questa è mio fratello. 2 Questo / questa è mia sorella. The answer is at the bottom of the page. Answers: tuo padre = your father, tua madre = your mother Questo è mio fratello. Questa è mia sorella. 10 I Primi Passi Summarise how questo and questa are used by filling in the box below.
