Mystery Quilt, Part 6
Ami Simms, noted quilt teacher, national
speaker and published author, will present
a lecture entitled How NOT To Make A
Prize-Winning Quilt. Ami confesses that
over the years she has made some horrible
mistakes. She plans to pass on some tips on
what NOT to do! You'll see an assortment

appeared on several quilting television
shows. Ami trained as a teacher and, long
ago in another life, taught second graders.
When population declines in her area
forced her out of that gig, she became a
professional quilter, combining two loves:
quilting and teaching! After 30 years on
the national circuit Ami says she still looks
forward to every trip. She only teaches
subject matter about which she is truly
passionate—no spelling or long division—
and giggling in class is highly encouraged.
Simms is perhaps best known as the
founder of the Alzheimer's Art Quilt
Initiative, a national grassroots, volunteer
charity that raised $1.1M for Alzheimer's
research.
Simms, from Flint, Michigan, began
quilting in 1976 while conducting
anthropological research among the Old
Order Amish in northern Indiana.
Simms has presented lectures and
workshops to almost 500 groups in 47
states and 7 foreign countries. Simms'
workshop "Crumb Piecing" will be
presented on Sunday, August 28th.
She is the author of 9 quilting books and
numerous patterns. She was the creator
of the Worst Quilt in the World Contest.
Simms has also designed fabric and has

without quilting is pretty dull. Let me show
you how much fun quilting can be”.

Thank you!
The Colorado Quilting Council, Inc. is a statewide organization of
people interested in preserving the heritage of quilting, promoting
excellence in quilting and related arts, and in providing a source of
information and inspiration.
Dear Quilting Friends,
Sharing…I was sorry to have missed
the July meeting in Breckenridge.
I love that part of the state. I was
attending the wedding-shower for
the bride of my godson and dear
friend, whom I've known since I
was 7. I made a wall quilt for the
newlyweds and gave it to them on
Saturday. It was a lovely interlocking
hearts design; it matches this couple and
the beginning of their life’s journey.
Membership dues for 2016 are $25 and expire at the end of the
year. Dues after August 1st are $12.50. International membership is
$
30 per year. Pin replacement is $25. Guest fees are $10.
Colorado Threads, the official publication of CQC, is mailed
11 times a year. The Council reserves the right to select
articles and advertising that reflect the purposes of the
Council. Articles, photos, changes and newsletter reprint
requests should be sent to our editor. Everything needs to
be on the editor’s desk by the 15th of the previous month.

Quilting is a journey as well. After 47 years, Quilter’s
Newsletter Magazine is publishing their final edition at
the end of this year. I am reminded of the beginning of
their journey, when some very smart, talented women
wanted to revive the art of quilting, especially hand
quilting and piecing. They got together and started
sharing. Bonnie Leman began publishing the newsletter
out of her home to share her knowledge of quilting.
Ladies gathered at the Denver Art Museum to share
their quilt collection. Another group met downtown
at the Denver Dry Goods store to quilt and talk to
other women about quilting. The Great Quilt Contest
sponsored by Good Housekeeping Magazine, the U.S.
Historical Society, and the Museum of American Folk
Art started the Bicentennial Quilt Contest in 1976
which brought quilting to the attention of all Americans.
As America celebrated its 200th birthday, quilts were
made to remind us of the history of quilting and our
patriotism. Quilting over the past 50 years has been quite
an adventure. I believe we must not forget the beginning
of the journey as we encounter the next 50 years. Two
good resources for quilting history online: worldquilts.
quiltstudy.org and womenfolk.com Many more sites can
be found with a basic online search.
Advertising in the newsletter is available only to members of CQC.
The Business Directory $35/yearly; one-eighth page ad $15 (horizontal);
one-quarter page ad $25 (vertical); one-half page ad $40 (horizontal).
All text must be on the editor’s desk by the 15th of the month for
inclusion in the following month’s newsletter. All advertising must be
received by the 15th of the month for inclusion in the following
month’s newsletter. Send fees to: Connie Mondy, CQC, P.O. Box 295,

As we move forward with CQC’s journey please plan to
join us in Grand Junction to learn with Ami Sims and see

are great this year. We will be at the Clarion Inn, so make
your reservations soon.
We have more surprises in

Make a quilt out of this? Yup! Let Ami Simms show
you how to pick, puzzle, and patch your way to
beautiful little blocks that are tiny works of art.
You'll sash them and finish your quilt at home.
This skill building class for advanced beginners
and intermediate quilters will give students the
tools to ensure an accurate ¼" seam, working with
innovative block designs to learn how to approach
the piecing of a complicated block and make it as
easy as possible. Start constructing blocks with acute
angles and gentle curves. There will be time to work
with multiple blocks and practice several angles.
We'll be working on a really small scale
(look at the size of those scraps!) with 10 to
15 different fabrics in each 4" block! Think
of piecing in a whole new way: random,
serendipitous, asymmetrical, and experimental.
It’s time to sew outside the box. Crumb piecing
is fun, relaxing, and a little hard to stop. Skill
level—beginning to intermediate.
A supply list will be sent upon enrollment.

July's Breckenridge
Meeting
July's meeting was held in Breckenridge. Carol Green won
our Shirley Sanden red ticket item (a patriotic quilt kit). Many
door prizes were given out as well.
Our Newest Hall of Fame Member
Our second Hall of Fame inductee is well known to you
all. She is an example of volunteerism at the highest
level. We are pretty sure she has done just about
every job in our organization as a committee member,
a chairman, or as a board member. To tell you all her
jobs would give her away much too soon.
Susan Cleveland
entertained us with her
stories as she showed us
her colorful, fun, awardwinning quilts.
She is dedicated, loyal, and good at whatever job
she tackles or is asked to do. She is well liked, always
has a smile and is quick with a joke or an anecdote to
make you do what she wants, buy what she is selling,
or volunteer for whatever
committee she has asked
you to work for.
Matter of fact,
that's what you
remember about
her most: her
sense of humor
while she works
her magic.
A huge thank you goes to the Summit
Quilters, standing with our speaker, who
welcomed us to Breckenrige and provided
wonderful goodies.
Please join me in

Hall of Fame
inductee: Karen Brown.

Bring Love and Life to an Old Quilt
It is said that old houses that need restoring are in need of some
love. The same thing is true for old and unfinished quilts.
If you have such a treasure and need help deciding what kind of loving
it needs, CQC has an answer for you. Quilt rescuer, Tim Latimer, is
coming to Quilt-a-Fair to present a brand new class for us.
WORKSHOP
day 1
Analyze your quilt. Begin with
a vintage quilt, an unfinished top,
a collection of blocks made by
your grandmother, etc.
“Fix” it. Discuss and discover
possibilities to come away with a
new quilt recreation.
day 2/3
Work begins on your quilt with
Tim’s guidance and direction.
Technique demos. Tim will share
his knowledge and help you
along the way.
Tim’s amazing work has been featured in the Rocky Mountain Quilt
Museum’s “Male Call” shows three times (2012, 2014 and 2016). He
won 2nd Place in the Viewers’ Choice award in 2016.
His work has also appeared in the Quilters’ Newsletter and AQS
publications and other shows. Tim’s quilts won AQS awards in 2013
for Best Hand Workmanship (Grand Rapids) and 2016 for Best Use of
DINNER &
TRUNK SHOW
Friday evening, Tim will speak
about and present his work. This
is a “not to be missed” evening,

Color (Lancaster). His quilts will be hanging in many other shows this
year, so there will certainly be new recognitions coming.
Enrollment opens immediately for this first ever Quilt-a-Fair
class, September 21, 22, and 23. Space is limited to 15 people,
CQC members only. Attached registration forms should be sent to:
Rescuing a quilt is time consuming
and requires some “down and dirty”
work. Tackling your own rescue
operation with Tim’s guidance gives
you a great start to finish many
projects on your own. End up with a
great story and a treasure to share
with family and friends.

as some older pieces from her premiere collection to
share with us. Jeananne has been featured in Quilters’
Newsletter, and is one of the contributors for Colorado
Quilting, From Mountain to Plains.
Jeananne Wright and Patty Hawkins will team up to
treat us to their “old and new” lecture, Kindred Spirits—
Alluring Ancestral Quilts to Matisse Art Quilts, to kick off
this year’s Quilt-a-Fair with a dessert reception at 6:30p,
followed by a 7:00p lecture in the Longmont Conference
Center. These two incredible Colorado women have
probably forgotten more about quilts than most of us
can ever hope to know. They have a special delight for
us in their parallel exploration of the full gamut of the
quilting world.
Patty is a well-known textile artist who lectures and
teaches all over the country. Patty, inspired by quilts
of Nancy Crow and Michael James, later began
incorporating dye marking and paints in her abstract
art quilts. She has won numerous awards, she’s been
featured on “The Quilt Show,” and was the Artist in
Residence for the Rocky Mountain National Park. Like
many of us, her first sewing lessons were with her mother,
but Patty has taken it to glorious heights. (Cost: $37 for
the Wright/Hawkins’ dessert lecture. See the website for
other Quilt-a-Fair options and lodging.)
Jeananne is a noted collector and certified Quilt
Appraiser. She started making her dolls’ clothes out of
feedsacks at the age of 7. Since 2007, she has made
70 quilts using blocks from the 30s, 40s, and 50s; setting
them together in unusual ways with feedsacks and other
“common threads”. She will have some of them, as well

Why Are My Squares
Too Small?
I just sewed my first block. I followed the
instructions which called for some solid 3-inch
squares and then some of those squares laid right
sides together and cut on the diagonal. Stitched
together they were pretty half squares, but smaller
than the squares to piece them with.
C
Ear
Cut 2
A
I compensated by just trimming my solid squares
but am trying to decide whether to carry on with
this method or find better instructions!
Bat Body
Cut 2
ANSWER:
Sounds like your seams are too wide. Make sure
you're sewing accurate ¼" seams. You can check
the size of your seam allowances by following these
simple instructions.
B
Inner Body
Cut 1
•
Cut a 2" x 3" piece of graph paper (¼" grid).
•
Slide it under the presser foot, so one square is
on the right side of the needle.
•
Align needle slightly to the right of the grid
line (a hair's width).
•
Lower needle into graph paper.
•
Place a piece of masking tape against the right
edge of grid line.
•
Raise the needle and remove graph paper.
•
When stitching, keep fabric even with left edge
of tape.
Insert a new needle into your machine. Change
your needle often, because a dull point can pull
threads out of the fabric.
Set your stitch length at 12–15 stitches per inch. If
you have a stitch length dial, set it at 1.75–2.0.
Remember, machine piecing requires accuracy.
Always make the proper adjustments on your
sewing machine before you start any project. Then
test the seam allowance for accuracy. Good luck
finding the perfect seam allowance.

General Meeting Minutes
July Meeting Minutes, 7/23/16
Breckenridge, CO
Acting President, Lucille Rypinski called the meeting to order
at 10:00a. She thanked the Summit Quilters for hosting today’s
meeting and for all of the good refreshments. Nancy VerWest, Deb
Conway, and Terri Eaton welcomed everyone to Breckenridge.
Karen Brown read the Abridged Minutes from the July Board
Meeting of June 12th.
Old Business
Gifts and Grants, Penny Christensen presented a motion to grant
$1,043 to Rangeview students to purchase sewing machines at the
Durango meeting. Discussion was held. The motion was tabled to
the July meeting due to a lack of a quorum present to hold a valid
vote. The motion was reissued at today’s meeting and Carol Green
seconded the motion. There was a discussion and then a vote was
called. The motion passed with one opposed, zero abstentions, and
the rest approved.

Committee Reports
Fall Retreat, (Carol Cook for Karen Hadfield): this year’s Fall
Retreat will be exciting as we have Deb Karasik as our instructor.
Deb is an internationally known quilter, designer and author
specializing in paper piecing. Her use of innovative bold, bright
colors is her signature for most of her contemporary “spiky” quilts.
Here is an example of the pattern that we will be making in our
class, named SF Sensibilities. Of course, participants can use their
own fabrics and colors. Or, if you’d like, Deb has kits to purchase
on her website with either a white background like this sample, or
with a black background. As always, participants can choose to
Retreat Only, and work on their own projects. Fall Retreat will start
on Friday, October 14 at 5:00p. After dinner on Friday, Deb will
provide a lecture for everyone (including those not in her class).
Deb’s class will be on Saturday and a half day on Sunday. We
can see the supply list on Deb’s website at debkarasik.com under
workshops, but I have a copy if you’d like to look it over. Also,
Deb is offering a reduced price on the SF Sensibilities kit ($135)
for Fall Retreat participants, and I can provide the link if you think
you’d like to purchase it. Just see me at the break. The Fall Retreat
fee includes two-night’s lodging and 6 meals (Friday dinner
through Sunday lunch). More information and the registration form
are available on the website. Registration started July 15th and
several have already been received, so don’t delay. This class will
be popular and may fill up fast. Join us for a fabulous weekend of
learning, fun and comradery!
Mystery Quilt, Carol Cook: since March, CQC has been providing
clues for this year’s mystery quilt as a benefit for our members.
One factor in selecting this pattern is that it can be used with
a wide variety of color palettes, from monochromatic through
scrappy. How many of you are creating your own version? I am
making a scrappy version using fat quarters for the medium and
dark #1, and a single fabric for the background and dark#2. The
final clue is planned for the October newsletter, so we should be
able to complete it before year end. Here is a sample of the clues
we’ve completed so far. Please respect our designer and protect
her copyright by not sharing the clues with quilters who are not
members of CQC. I would appreciate any feedback about the
Mystery Quilt and especially if you’d like us to continue to provide
another in 2017. If you have any questions, please come see me at
the break. Thanks.
Quilt-a-Fair, Quilt Show, Kay Hefner—at Quilt-a-Fair 2015, do
you remember the quilt show which featured CQC's first President,
Shirley Sanden, and her array of quilts? There were 157 quilts in
that show. This year we are asking you for larger quilts, possibly
king, queen or full-bed size, or even large wall hangings. We will
not be able to hang as many as 157 quilts. The number of quilts
we are looking for is 72. As of today, we have 24 entry forms
turned in for the show, so we are a third of the way towards our
goal. Beginning August 1, you can join CQC at half-price $12.50.
Membership information is on the website. We are extending the
deadline for entering quilts for the show. THE NEW ENTRY
DEADLINE IS AUGUST 15. The dates for drop off, August 10–29
remain the same. As soon as you receive your acceptance letter
and number for your quilt, you are welcome to visit your drop-off
location; shops will be ready to accept your quilts. My contact
information is available on the show rules and entry form, so let me
hear from you soon!
Quilt-a-Fair—see the newsletter for information about package
deals, lectures and quilt classes. We have 70 vendors; 18 of them
are new.
May Youth Meeting, Mitzi King—we had a very successful event
with 47 youth in attendance. Our next event will be held May 20,
2017. The kids will have new make & take projects and there will
be samplers for adults. We need door prizes, donations, guilds to
sponsor make & take tables, and volunteers to help with this event.
Please contact Mitzi. Thank you.
Hall of Fame, Joyce Taff—there were three nominees this year and
only one is present today—Karen Brown.
Announcements
Helen Kearney—The Rocky Mountain Wa Shonaji Quilt Show
“Color My World” will begin August 1st at The Blair Caldwell
Library, 2401 Welton Street, Denver (720-865-2401). Each person
drew a crayon from a brown bag, the crayon determined the main
color of each quilt. All are welcome to the Opening Reception on
Saturday, August 13, beginning at 12:30p.
Look in the A&E Spotlight Paper (July 22, 2016) for an article
entitled "Quilters Push Traditional Boundaries".
The meeting was adjourned at 10:40am.
Respectfully submitted, Recording Secretary—Karen Brown

Gift & Grant Awarded
A request for a grant was submitted to CQC Gifts &
Grants' Committee and approved by the membership at
the July General Meeting.
The students of Rangeview High School, part of the
Aurora School District, are interested in forming an
after-school sewing club at the beginning of the school
year in August. This club will learn sewing skills to make
quilts, clothes and other sewing projects. They plan to
meet every other week and will charge a membership
fee to cover expenses. To accomplish this startup they
will need $1,043.00 in funding to buy 7 Janome 2212
sewing machines.
After reviewing the application, Gifts & Grants recommended
approval, the CQC board concurred and their application
was voted on for approval by the membership.
Congratulations to the students of Rangeview High School
for the award of a Grant of $1,043.00 to purchase
sewing machines to start an after school sewing club.
Respectfully submitted,
Penny Christensen, Gifts & Grants Chair
