Oklahoma City Edition
Chartered May 25, 1959
September 2011
Letter from President
This month at our annual Executives‟ Night we will
thank our executives for their support of our
organization and its efforts in the community. I
hope you will be in attendance with your
executives for this wonderful occasion.
2010-2011 Officers &
Directors
President
Lisa Riggs, Oklahoma City University
Later in the month, an outstanding group of
women representing our Chapter will be attending
the Leadership Conference/Annual Meeting
(LCAM) in Minneapolis and will bring back some new ideas and energy!
Kay Lacey, The Oklahoma Publishing
Company
I found this inspiring story that I wanted to share with each of you!
Stephanie Snyder, The State Chamber
of Oklahoma
Vice President
Secretary
The Starfish Story - by Loren Eisley
One day a man was walking along the beach when he
noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it
into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are
you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back
into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I
don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” “Son,” the man said,
“don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and
hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After
listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another
starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the
man, he said… “I made a difference for that one.”
In whatever ways you have supported the Oklahoma City Chapter
throughout your membership, congratulations for making a difference –
to the numerous people who have received our scholarships and created
a better life for themselves and their families; to the adults who can now
read to their children, fill out a job application, apply for a driver‟s license,
and so much more; to the untold number of children whose hearts you
have touched at Green Pastures Elementary and Positive Tomorrows
through donations of books, supplies, rewards, time and encouragement;
and, to the shelters and others who strive to make a difference in every
broken life that reaches their doors. Pat yourself on the back. Send up a
word of thanks for all with which you‟ve been blessed. And never lose
sight of how much of a difference your contributions to our Chapter make
in the lives of others.

Leadership Conference & Annual Meeting
Minneapolis, MN
September 22-24, 2011
IT’S NOT TOO LATE!!!
REGISTRATION IS OPEN UNTIL THE
DAY OF THE CONFERENCE!
The Faces of Leadership . . . volunteer, professional and philanthropic leadership require different styles
and what better place to gain training for those areas than EWI’s 64th Leadership Conference and Annual
Meeting! You will notice that the structure of this year’s conference is quite different from past years. The
changes made were based on feedback we received from you, our members. While the schedule has
changed, one thing remains the same: LCAM will be packed with amazing opportunities for networking,
training and impacting the community. We are confident that LCAM 2011 will be an incredible opportunity
for you to enhance your three Faces of Leadership! See you in Minneapolis.
"Connections" - Thursday, September 22, 2011:
Our volunteer “face” of leadership. Connections day will be focusing on EWI Chapter service and
leadership. In the competitive world of organizations, and the limited amount of time volunteers have,
how we lead matters more than ever. Thursday’s workshops focus on sharing best practices and ways to
“keep it simple” at the Chapter level. Thursday will also be the day for our first “Town Hall Meeting”—an
open dialog between the Corporate leadership and our members. And we have moved the Delegate
session to Thursday to create a comfortable environment for discussion of the important issues before the
delegates and give you ample time to receive feedback from your Chapter prior to the Annual Meeting

Firm Spotlight
Provided by Dana McCrory, Oklahoma Zoological Society
Founding
Since its founding in 1954 as Friends of the Zoo, the Oklahoma Zoological Society (OZS) has worked hand
in hand with the Oklahoma City Zoological Park to ensure its vitality. This successful partnership has gained
renown far beyond our city, showing that public and private support can work together for the greatest public
good.
The organization's original incorporators included Ray Anthony, B.D. Eddie, Jean Everest, Edward L.
Gaylord, R. C. Jopling, Donald S. Kennedy, John E. Kirkpatrick and Dean A. McGee. Martha Jo (Sturm)
Steffen served as the organization's first executive director and was a driving force in creating one of the
largest membership organizations in Oklahoma. Since 2008, Dana McCrory has been the Executive
Director of the Oklahoma Zoological Society.
Mission
To support and promote the Oklahoma City Zoological Park and Botanical Garden and the Zoo‟s four
purposes of education, conservation, zoological research and recreation.
Capital Support
OZS has made major capital contributions for the Noble Aquatic Center, the New Children's Zoo, Dan
Moran Aviary, Great EscApe, Cat Forest, Oklahoma Trails, the Rosser Conservation Education Center, the
Jungle Gym Playground, Explorikeet Adventure, and most recently the new Elephant Habitat. OZS
volunteers also played a leadership role in bringing Remington Park to Oklahoma City, and were
instrumental in securing the 1/8-cent sales tax dedicated to the zoo.
While major capital investments are critical to the zoo's advancement, its daily activities require regular and
dependable annual support. Education, animal enrichment and care, veterinary equipment, sculptures for
Zoo Grounds, research, landscaping and recreation are but a few areas where OZS has made a difference.
This successful partnership has enabled the zoo to improve the future for wildlife by exhibiting animals and
plants and providing education and conservation programs that encourage respect and stewardship of the
natural world.
Zoo FUNd for Kids
Since 1997 OZS has provided more than $1.3M in support for The Zoo FUNd for Kids. This scholarship
program was created by the OZS to ensure that any child, regardless of ability to pay, has the chance to
share in learning experiences offered by the zoo. To date, thanks to The Zoo FUNd for Kids, more than
800,000 children have attended organized classes, classroom visits, workshops and tours of the Oklahoma
City Zoo. These young people came to the zoo's Conservation Education Center from 60 Oklahoma cities
and towns. More than 83 percent of these students came from families below the poverty level.
Membership
OZS, with its more than 21,600 ZooFriend member families, is a wonderful reflection of the pride and
enthusiasm that Oklahomans have for their zoo.

Benefits of membership in OZS include unlimited admission to the Oklahoma City Zoo and reciprocal
admission to almost 100 other zoos across the nation. Members also receive the quarterly ZooSounds
newsletter; a color calendar with photos from the annual Capture the Wild Photo Contest; notification of all
special events; invitations to members-only events such as picnics, tours and exhibits; a discount on gift
shop purchases and on all education classes; and opportunities for travel.
Volunteers
OZS also promotes volunteer involvement in many of the zoo's activities, including educational programs,
special events, fund-raising, committees of the Oklahoma City Zoological Trust, and the Trust. OZS has a
volunteer board of 21 Life Directors and 25 Active Directors drawn from throughout the metropolitan area.
The Board, headed by President Cindy Batt, meets regularly. The Board of Directors serve on committees
which set policy and monitors staff activities aimed at implementing board policy and objectives.

is the “Getting to Know You” segment and is a fun way to introduce representatives, both old and new, to
the membership.
If you have news or information from your committees that should be in either the weekly update or the
Connect, please forward that to any member of the Committee. Any information for the Connect needs to
be received the last week of the month in order to be included in the next month‟s Connect.
