In my article in last month’s bulletin, I celebrated the close connection this year between Chanukah and Thanksgiving. I trust everyone made it through alright… What with all that calendrical excitement, many people are worried about the great traditional Christian celebration in December being forgotten… I often hear from you when you discover ignorance about things Jewish among other Americans. “How can they not know about ________!” (fill in the blank!) And yet, while lack of knowledge about our customs is quite deplorable, I also find it sad that we Jews don’t really have a clue about what it is that so many of our neighbors are celebrating on the 25th of this month. I’d like to help you “fill in THAT blank!” Having just come off our course about the great mythic stories of Jewish tradition, let’s have some time together to focus on the December piece of our neighbor’s great mythic story. “What Jews Should Know About Christmas,” will be a look at the ancient origins of this holiday – of course, from a Jewish point of view. You can choose from two versions: Version 1.0 will be a short overview on a Sunday morning, especially for Torah School parents, December 8, 9-10:30am. (C’mon – don’t you want to have something to tell your kids?) Version 1.5 will be at the first TWO meetings of our Wonderful Wednesdays this Fall, on December 4 and 11 at from noon to about 1:15pm. Hopefully, those sessions will give us an Opportunity to go into some more detail. I’d particularly like to invite those congregants who don’t come from a Jewish background to join in. Your insight will be invaluable! After all, what could be more important than understanding how we see each other’s religions?! It’s getting cold and dark out there… let’s warm up with the light of knowledge and understanding! L’Shalom, Rabbi Garry Loeb [email protected] See Kol Beth-El on-line at http://www.monroetemple.org/wfmenuinstall/media-galleries/current-issue 5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE During the months of October and November, we celebrated two very exciting events. The first was honoring the 25th, 40th, and 50+ anniversaries of long time, dedicated Temple members. Prior to Friday night services on October 25th, a dinner was held in their honor. After dinner, we heard the fascinating stories of when and why these people chose to become members of Monroe Temple. A feeling of community, gathering with other Jewish people, education for their children and being a part of a growing Jewish community in upstate New York were some of the themes that resonated through these stories. Many of the 25 year members said that Rabbi Loeb was also a big part of the reason they joined. Just one week later on November 1st, we honored the new families who have joined the Temple this year under the Mitzvah of Connection program. It was so wonderful to see the sanctuary filled with new faces! The pews were filled with people of all ages and the many kids (young and old) that danced around the sanctuary at the beginning of the service was a joy to watch. To experience these two events just a week apart from each other makes you think about why people choose to join a temple and what makes them stay for so many years. In addition to our devoted clergy, our respected Religious school and the many activities that go on at Temple, I would have to hope that the reason people stay is because of the personal connections they have made along the way. As this year of Mitzvah of Connection unfolds, and we begin to offer more social, educational and spiritual programming, please make an effort to attend as many events as you can in order to help our new members make those same connections. Sisterhood/WRJ and MAC do such a wonderful job reaching out to new Temple members and making them feel welcome by offering free membership dues for their first year. Now that we are doing that for Temple membership, let’s all get together to make these 50 families feel right at home. And, if you happen to run into Lenny Keitel, pat him on the back for a job well done! He deserves our thanks for the tremendous time and effort he gives Monroe Temple. B’Shalom Beth Glass [email protected] MENTSCH MAKERS Sunday/Funday on Sunday May 4th 6 MENTSCH MAKERS What is the importance of a Jewish Pre-School? Jewish Pre-Schools are the Gateway to Jewish Life. Mentsch Makers Pre-School strives to provide children and their families the opportunity to explore their Jewish culture and offers the seeds for establishing Jewish identity which is defined differently for each of us. Our program emphasizes a sensory approach to cultural Judaism and the Jewish holidays. We spend Shabbat on the bima with Rabbi Loeb, sing songs and learn along with our puppets Ralph, Af and Tapooz. Our delicious snack every Friday is challah. We celebrate Hanukkah and Purim at our family programs. We learn at Tot Shabbat by singing and having a great nosh. We cook and bake traditional Jewish foods. We create projects that fit hand in hand with our Jewish holidays such as Tzedakah boxes, edible sukkot and dreidels, stained glass menorahs, Israeli flags, the planting of seeds, sedar plates, and we even make our own butter for Shavuot. Through these holiday and Shabbat activities that include songs, arts and crafts, music and cooking, we are enriching our families with Jewish traditions. Over the past 24 years, we have found that most of our parents feel overwhelmingly positive about the Jewish pre-school experience and personally engage in more Jewish practices at home. And…. when the time comes to graduate from Mentsch Makers, we have seen many of or families make the commitment to remain in a synagogue setting by becoming members and continuing with their children’s Jewish education. In addition to setting the Jewish foundation for our mentsches and their families, our pre-school helps to encourage growth in the following areas: Social Development – this includes cooperating, sharing, making friends and interacting with other children and adults. This includes learning to sit and listen as part of a group, following rules, and participating in an organized, routine and safe environment. Your little Mentsch also gains independence as he/she is encouraged to do things on his own. Emotional Development – relates to maintaining a comfortable separation from parents, a feeling of self esteem and general happiness, and an eagerness to participate in school activities. This includes encouraging the child to verbalize their feelings towards others, resolving conflicts on his/her own, and developing the initiative in making choices and decisions about what to do and how to do it. Cognitive Development – prepares your child for successful school experiences. This includes the development of reading readiness, math skills, social studies and science concepts. This also includes the development of listening and thinking skills. Mentsch Makers Pre-School along with its excellent teaching staff addresses all areas of growth and development. Physical Development – includes gross and fine motor development, increases strength and agility and the appreciation of good health habits. The month of February is dedicated to Health and Safety with many visits from doctors, dentists, police/firemen, an occupational/physical therapist as well as nutritionists. Creative Development – emphasizes the skills that enable the child to develop new ideas and new modes of expression. This is accomplished through art, dramatic plays, movement and verbalization. Continued on page 9, see Mentsch Makers 7 SISTERHOOD I hope you and your families had a great Thanksgivukkah! It seems strange to write a December article and not be wishing you a Happy first day of Hanukkah in December, but the eighth day is on December 5th, so here’s a bit of trivia. This has not happened since Lincoln established Thanksgiving a holiday in 1863, and probably will never happen again. So happy yam latkes in your turkey. Now on to Sisterhood/WRJ business. Let me begin by recapping some October events: ☺I, once again, want to express sincere thanks to Linda Hermann for spearheading this year’s “Making Strides against Breast Cancer” walk at Woodbury Common on Sunday October 20th. There was a spectacular turnout with over 11,000 attendees. Our Sisterhood/WRJ and MAC and their families were right in there lending support. It’s great to walk and work together to bring stupendous results. Overall over $700,000 was raised. Our “Sisters of the Hood” raised over $3,600. I’m looking forward to doing even better next year. ☺ On Sunday October 27th, Jane Frances Amler, author of “The Fifth Kingdom,” gave an exciting and illuminating talk about the Jews of 15th century Spain. Her well-prepared talk (illustrated with a power-point presentation) was so well received we would love to have her return. Thank you to our recording secretary, Jessica Lewis for sharing her mother-in-law and to husband, Scott, for sharing his mother. In November: ☺Lisa Friedman and Michelle Meyers, take many bows for that wonderful Paid-up Membership Dinner at Bocci’s Restaurant on Monday, November 4th. Those present enjoyed food, fun and friends. What a feat to feed and entertain over 100 women. I’ll let you plan an affair for me any time. ☺Sunday, November 17th was our Bazaar with many varied vendors for holiday shopping as well as raffles and a snack and bagel bar, with bagels donated by Kevin Cashman of Bagel World. The bazaar not only makes a little money for us, but is a service to our community with wonderful goods and prices. Thanks to all who solicited vendors, “womanned” our booths, sold raffles and helped in the set up and clean up.. ☺Tuesday, November 19th—WOW! Another author and book discussion visit. Joshua Henkin came to talk abut his new book, “The World Without You.” This was very well received. We now have another author to keep on tap for a recall. Thank you to Marcie Weisberg for planning another wonderful book discussion and for preparing all the other great programs you do for our enjoyment and continuing education. ☺We would be remiss without thanking Harriet Bauer for chairing the Thanksgiving pie sales in November. Thank you for collecting the money, picking up pies from Carousel Bakery and the pie distribution. Now on to December: ☺Join us for an exciting Hanukkah Evening on December 2nd with a social action theme. Thank you to Andrea Studnitzer for running the program ☺There will be one of our Rosh Chodesh studies in December. Stay tuned for the date and further details, coming soon. ☺Carol Nirenberg is the chairperson of our Scholarship Committee. Sisterhood/WRJ of Monroe Temple awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to the daughter of a Sisterhood member who plans to continue her involvement in Jewish activities while attending college. For more information and to receive an application form, please contact Carol by December 15th at [email protected]., or call (H) 238-2511 or © 492-1394. Continued on page 9,. See Sisterhood 8 MEN’S ACTION CLUB Shalom! Wow how the year goes by so quickly. The Menorah is already half full, our stomachs are still full of turkey and fixins and sorry to say but winter is upon us! Where did the time go? The Men's Action Club (MAC) has had some nice events recently. Back in October we joined the Rabbi on his Shabbatwalk in Harriman State Park and we had a fun and informative Whiskey Tasting in November - a tasting of Scotch Whisky and American Bourbon Whiskey with good times and fun conversations. So what is on tap for December??? On Sunday December 8th we have our Monthly MAC General Meeting at 9:00 am in the Temple Library - At this month’s meeting, we will be honoring our past board of directors for the wonderful and dedicated job they did over the past 6 years! So stop in and say hello and thank our fellow members for their dedication. Of course, ongoing we have our annual Super Bowl Box Fundraiser: I know you see us out there on Sunday mornings with our "Beautiful Chart of Boxes". Take a chance, buy a box, who knows what can happen!! MAC will be out soliciting boxes every Sunday in the Temple lobby prior to and just after Torah School all the way through till Super Bowl weekend - or until the chart is full. As I have mentioned in prior bulletins, MAC will be conducting its first ever MAC Scholarship which will be awarded to the high school graduating boy of an active MAC member. If you are interested in joining the Scholarship committee, please let me know via email or when you see me or Rich Feeley at the Temple. Additionally, if anyone is interested in playing a planning role for the next Festival of Flavors in March 2014, please let me know as I will be looking to form a Temple-wide committee for the event. Keep checking back and checking the Temple website or the MAC bulletin board in the Temple lobby for more information on upcoming MAC events. To all of our new Mitzvah of Connection new Temple Members, welcome to our lovely congregation. I hope you have received your welcome letter from the Men's Action Club, but if you haven't, hopefully reading the above activities has sparked your interest in MAC. First year Temple members receive free membership to the Men's Action Club as well!!!! So take a chance, check us out, and see what we have to offer. I hope the rest of you have received your re-introduction to MAC, reminding everyone to support MAC and Monroe Temple though your membership dues contribution. A small change this year has been implemented in terms of dues. Instead of the $25 annual dues, we have changed it to a tiered membership plan, giving everyone two options; $18 Abraham level or $36 Moses Level. Hopefully all of you who were members this past fiscal year will continue to be members of the Men's Action Club of Monroe Temple for the upcoming year, and for those who haven't been members previously or let your membership lapse - we hope you will give us a try and join this year. Applications are available online as a link on our new and improved Monroe Temple website under the Men's Action Club page, as well as in the Temple lobby. Make checks payable to Monroe Temple Men's Action Club. B'Shalom, Robert [email protected] 9 Mentsch Makers, continued from page 6 Mentsch Makers is very proud to be your Temple pre-school. The staff is dedicated to making this pre-school the best it can be!! Our school prides itself on excellent teacher/student ratios. We offer your children the most we can through our curriculum as well as by giving plenty of tender, loving care (TLC) all the time. Mentsch Makers Pre-School offers classes from infants through Pre-K from 1-5 days per week. If you would like to donate a couple of hours a week and volunteer in any of our classes, share a special skill or just have a wonderful morning, please call and leave your name in the Temple office. I will gladly invite you in for a visit. On Wednesday evening, December 4th at 5:30pm, Mentsch Makers will be celebrating our Hanukkah Program and party in grand style. We are anticipating 150 people to partake in our project, songfest, dancing, dairy dinner with latkes, of course, and dessert made by our mentsches.
