LOVER HILL, NORTH-EAST TASMANIA
In 1986, Clover Hill was established in Pipers
River, North-East Tasmania, as a sparkling wine estate.
With its cool climate conditions and its ancient, fertile,
volcanic red soil, the 66-hectare (163 acre) site was
selected as an ideal location to dedicate to making an
outstanding vintage sparkling wine.
TEA TREE, SOUTH-EAST TASMANIA
Tea Tree vineyard was established in 2008, located at
Coal Valley near the township of Richmond. It has a
pleasant cool climate condition with soil type varying
from heavy black cracking clays to red clay soils. The
site is undulating with gentle slopes and gullies for
good drainage and airflow.
VARIETALS
Clover Hill is planted solely to the traditional sparkling
wine varieties of chardonnay (13 hectares/32 acres),
pinot noir (7 hectares/22 acres) and pinot meunier
(1.24 hectares/3 acres).
VARIETALS
The first crop in 2011 was Chardonnay and Sauvignon
Blanc . Currently Tea Tree is planted with Chardonnay
(5.86 hectares/14.5 acres), Pinot Noir (5.43 hectares /12.4
acres), Sauvignon Blanc (4.12 hectares/ 10.2 acres).
FIRST VINTAGE
Clover Hill’s first vintage was in 1991 made from 100%
Chardonnay fruit. The blend has evolved to include
small proportions of pinot noir and pinot meunier.
VINEYARD
A very windy site, Tea Tree is unique in being
relatively frost free during the growth cycle. Vines are
spaced 2.4m between rows and 1.8m between vines. It is
fully irrigated from a holding dam and rows are
orientated North—East.
SITE
The site capitalizes on three natural assets - a cool,
frost-free maritime climate, ancient volcanic soils and a
sheltered amphitheatre.
VINEYARD
The vines are spaced 1.1m apart, with 1.9m between
rows. They are oriented to the north to maximise
sunlight interception. Significant effort is poured into
Clover Hill canopy management to create the best
microclimate. The vineyard is unirrigated, relying
exclusively on natural rainfall. Vines are cane pruned to
minimize the impact of low-bud fertility.
SOIL TYPE
Soil type varies from heavy black cracking clays to red
clay soils. A mixture of Dermosols, Sodosols and
Chromosol over a dolomite and sand stone base .
YIELDS Average yields of 8 t/ha.
SOIL TYPE
Clover Hill vineyard has the deep red volcanic
‘krasnozem’ soil (averaging 1-5m deep) is scattered with
basalt stone. The soil is free draining with high organic
matter and good water and nutrient holding capacity.
Fruit is sourced from specific sections based on variation
in row orientation, altitude, soil depth and mesoclimate,
meaning a number of different cuvees an be produced
each season.
YIELDS Average yields of 7 t/ha.

CLIMATE
The mild autumn temperatures, with maximums in the
low 20°C and minimums around 10ºC, make for a long
ripening season, with intense flavours at low sugar

for sparkling wine.
