Review of the Role and Function of Tasmania’s Public VET Providers Stakeholder Communiqué 1 This Communiqué is the first in a series to inform stakeholders of the progress of the Review of the Role and Function of Tasmania’s Public VET Providers following the initial meeting of the Review Reference Group. The Reference Group consists of nominees of the key stakeholder groups listed on the Review website, where all critical information about the Review is posted: [email protected]. The first meeting was held on Tuesday February 7 in Hobart. The Hon Nick McKim MP, Minister for Education and Skills attended the meeting in order to emphasise the importance of the Review for the future of Tasmania, to welcome the members and to thank them for their willingness to act as a sounding board to the Consultant as the Review proceeds. The Consultant outlined the approach to be used to develop the final recommendations and the role the Reference Group might play in assisting to shaping these. This is outlined below: INDICATIVE PROCESS The first meeting focussed on sharing and exploring some of the common themes emerging at this very early stage. Review of the Role and Function of Tasmania’s Public VET Providers - commissioned by the Department of Education, Tasmania Doc ID: TASED-4-1407 As an important backdrop to these themes, appreciation was expressed for the fact that, without exception, stakeholders’ initial comments have been constructive, professional, future-oriented and focussed on the best outcomes for students, employers and the Tasmanian economy. Attention then turned to the themes emerging at this early stage. These are still at a very general level with greater detail and new themes expected as stakeholder submissions and further information are sought and received. Emerging Themes Eliminating waste Considering options for structural change Focussing on future needs Improving viability Restoring brand image Building stronger VET/Higher Education pathways Achieving cost neutral outcomes Facilitating corporate services Reviewing governance arrangements Positioning Tasmania for the impact of National VET (COAG) Reforms Accounting for staff resilience to change Meeting the needs of young Tasmanians Acknowledging regionality – Tasmania’s unique circumstances Ensuring training conforms with industry standards Preserving recent achievements Enhancing transparency of funding Link to Terms of Reference 1/6 1/2 1 1 1 1/4 6 7 2 3 7 5 5 1 5 6 As the consultation process progresses and various other perspectives are explored these themes will be further developed, added to and consolidated. Reference Group members were advised that progress on the development of these themes through consultation with individuals and organisations will be reported at the next meeting and work will commence on the principles for change, as outlined in stage 3 of the process above.
