Surfboat Rowers Tasmania - Surf Life Saving Tasmania
Surfboat Rowers Tasmania
About Us
Surfboat Rowing in Tasmania commenced in 1954. Prior to this in 1946, Burnie SLSC received
a new surfboat courtesy of the then Warden of the Burnie Council, J R Hilder. Former champion
swimmer and boating enthusiast Alex Norton was ‘stroke’ of the first boat crew. Having no other
Tasmanian crews to compete against, in 1954 Alex arranged for the purchase and transportation
of three additional surfboats for the Ulverstone SLSC, Devonport SLSC and Stanley SLSC and
hence surfboat racing in Tasmania was born. Since 1954 Surfboat Racing within Tasmania has
successfully grown from four Surf Life Saving Clubs located on the North West Coast of Tasmania
to almost all 14 of the Tasmanian Surf Life Saving Clubs. These clubs stretch from the Boat
Harbour SLSC to Bridport SLSC to Kingston SLSC, covering some 514 km of Tasmania.
The Surfboat Rowers Tasmania (SBRT) committee was founded in April 2009 as a result of the
Support of the Australia Surf Rowers League (ASRL) and our National sponsor The Royal Australian
Navy. SBRT was formed by the founding committee under Surf Life Saving Tasmania’s (SLST)
existing constitution which has provision for the existence of a Surfboat Advisory sub-committee
within the Surf Sports Executive Committee. Since its formation SBRT has been a driving force
behind Tasmanian Surfboat Rowing. The President of SBRT is today a delegate of SLST’s Surf
Sports Executive Committee where SBRT represents the interest of the members of SBRT and all
surf rowers within Tasmania. The SBRT committee is responsible for organising Surf Rowing events
within Tasmania under both the ASRL and SLST. Upon the formation of SBRT it has been
committed to guiding the development and promoting the advancement of Surf Rowing in
Tasmania.
