HISTORY
GEAR / EQUIPMENT
Dog sled teams were historically used as transportation
in arctic locations. They hauled supplies in to areas that,
by other methods, were inaccessible.
Whilst there are many different types, styles
and suppliers of equipment and gear – the
main items required for racing are:
Teams were also used for explorations – both of the
north and south poles – as well as during the Alaskan
Gold Rush, and mail deliveries (until the use of
snowmobiles become more reliable).
TODAY
Teams are still used in rural communities – especially in
Alaska and Canada.
RACING
Racing is a popular winter sport in areas of the Arctic,
United States, Canada, Russia and European countries.
And more recently in Australia – were competitors not
only race through the snow but also compete in dry land
sledding.
RACING IN TASMANIA
TASSI – Tasmanian Association of Sleddog Sports
Incorporated – is an extremely new sporting club, having
only formed in late 2014.
Our environment and weather conditions, here in
Tasmania, are perfect for racing which will see a long
racing season here in the state.
RACE MEETS
Races will be planned to be held primarily in the North
West throughout the 2015 season until more tracks and
locations can be sourced in other areas of the state.
DOGS
Sleddog Sports are more commonly associated with
arctic breeds such as Siberian Husky’s, Alaskan
Malamutes, Akita’s and Sammoyd’s. However, any
dog over 15 kgs in body weight (and who had a
desire to pull) can be taught how to pull a scooter or
rig.
HEALTH
The health and well-being of our dogs is absolutely
paramount! We take any and every opportunity to
further our education on the health of our dogs, to
promote safe and healthy training, and nutritious
diets for our canine companions.
Arctic breeds can NOT train, or compete, in
temperatures over 15 degrees due to their double
coats. This is one of the reasons why Tasmania’s
environment is so attractive for this sport.
•
Scooter or Rig (Dry Land Racing)
•
Sled (Snow Racing)
•
Harness (for each dog)
•
Bungee (racing 2 or more dogs)
•
Ganglines and Necklines
Owners may or may not run their dogs in
booties – this is dependant on the
conditions of the dog’s pads, as well as the
type of surface the dog(s) are training and /
or competing on.
Competitors must always wear a helmet
and excellent footwear as a minimum.
Gloves and other accessories are usually
worn by choice rather than being a
mandatory safety requirement.
