James and Callie Patton raised $132.95
for KGH’s Children’s Ward through their
summer drink stand. Inspired by Astral
Media’s ‘Have a Heart’ Radiothon, this
young brother-sister entrepreneur combo
made banners and signs to encourage
neighbours to stop by their stand and
contribute to their charitable initiative.
“It’s so great to see philanthropy starting at such a young age. James and
Callie are truly inspirational and a living statement that anyone can help to
make a difference.”
Don Shafer
Vice President & Regional Manager, Astral Media

Nurturing Philanthropy
Please find enclosed a cheque in the amount of $60. We would like this money to go
towards an intensive care infant incubator. My son Rio was born 14 weeks premature and
spent 3 months in hospital; 2 months in Victoria and 1 month @ KGH – we know how
important an incubator is. Rio just had his 9th birthday and wanted to donate a portion
of his birthday money to something that was important to us.
Thanks for all you do
Sue Manning
Giving gratitude
Staff Lottery
The iGive program provides donors
with the opportunity to say 'thank you'
for the care they or someone they
know who has benefited from the care
they received as patients.
At the beginning of the year the
KGH Foundation implemented a
50/50 payroll deduction staff lottery
for all Interior Health employees in
the Central Okanagan. Currently
we’re giving away a prize of nearly
$3,600 every two weeks which will
translate to over $90,000 raised for the Foundation annually. The support of the staff has been tremendous.
People who say ‘I GIVE' are people
making a difference. By supporting
the KGH Foundation, you are
supporting your family, your friends
and your community. No other gift can
demonstrate compassion or humanity
in quite the same way.
Give where it is needed most
Our Giving Catalogue provides a way for
individuals and organizations seeking to support
the KGH Foundation a choice in how to direct
their gift.
The catalogue highlights some of the high priority
items that the Kelowna General Hospital requires
this year.
You can view our Giving Catalogue online at:
www.kghfoundation.com/giving-catalogue
Many thanks to Pushor Mitchell LLP for their
support in creating the catalogue.

KGH Foundation Endowment Funds
Individuals providing major gifts to the Foundation sometimes chose to endow funds for a specific purpose
meaningful to the individual or family named in the endowment. Endowed Funds are maintained specifically for the
purposes chosen in perpetuity. The Foundation’s current endowments provide a bedrock of support for the Hospital
and facilities supported by the Foundation.

Planning a Gift
Supporting the work of the Foundation is accomplished in many different ways. A Gift in Legacy,
through a bequest in your will or participating in a gift provided through insurance, is one of the
most important and fundamental ways of supporting the Foundation and the community.
The Kelowna General Hospital Foundation is honoured to recognize the Legacy Gifts received from the
estates of these generous and thoughtful individuals.

Grace Campbell
Featured Legacy Donor
Both Ken and Grace Campbell were born and raised in Saskatchewan. They moved to Kelowna upon Ken’s retirement in 1986.
Sadly, Ken passed away February 20, 2010. Grace has left a bequest in her
will to the KGH Foundation to show appreciation for the care that she and
Ken received whenever it was needed. As Grace said, “The Kelowna General
Hospital has always been important to me, especially as I have gotten older.”
Mabel Hall
Featured Estate Donor
Mabel Hall, better known as “Kupie” was born and raised in Kelowna.
She worked in the fruit and forest industry for many years. She was a life
member of the Kelowna Yacht Club and served as secretary for over 40
years. She claimed to have spotted “Ogopogo” in the Peachland area!
Kupie’s Legacy Gift to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation has and
will continue to benefit patients at the Kelowna General Hospital.

Giving starts...
with a dream
Dr. Sandy Nash started at KGH when
the Emergency Ward consisted of one
bed. He had a vision of a hospital with
an expanded Ambulatory Care Centre
and Emergency Department that would
allow us to treat patients more effectively.
Sandy envisioned a pleasant, pleasing
environment for care and after years of
meticulous planning, KGH’s Centennial
Building opened to the public on May 27, 2012.
“Every morning I drive in, often it’s dark when the days are short, and I go
under the link which is all lit up. When I get out of my car, I look up at the
windsock that’s lit up with that red light and I actually get goosebumps at
what we’ve accomplished here.”

'Take Care, Take PArt' CApital campaign
A message from the Campaign Chair,
Karen Borring-Olsen
The 'Take Care, Take Part' Campaign has represented a
significant development in the history of the Kelowna
General Hospital Foundation — and the Hospital itself.
It is the largest capital campaign the Foundation has
undertaken, and our community has supported us all
the way, resulting in over $7.5 million being donated
to the hospital’s development. The generosity of our
donors speaks volumes to how great a community this truly is.
Our Campaign Cabinet did an incredible job of
bringing the importance of this campaign to
individuals and businesses throughout our
communities. We could not have accomplished this incredible goal without their support, and to a
person, they worked tirelessly over the past three years to make Kelowna General Hospital as good as it can possibly be.
12 Kelowna General Hospital Foundation
The campaign has allowed the Hospital to purchase
state of the art equipment, to reduce our reliance on
Lower Mainland services and to attract world class
physicians and staff to provide the services here in our
own community. We are proud to be able to garner
the support to purchase the equipment our staff and
physicians deserve to do their job.
I believe it is all our responsibility to take care of our
community today and for generations to come. Giving,
as we all know, is never about the size of the gift, but
rather the thoughts and emotions that accompany it.
With that in mind, on behalf of the Board of Directors,
the staff and all those who work towards a better
tomorrow, I would like to thank everyone who donated
so generously to this campaign so that Kelowna
General Hospital will have the facilities to help us all
when we need it most.
We are grateful to and honoured by all those who participated in making this campaign to outfit
the new Centennial Building a success.

Helping Hands
A dramatic art installation “Helping Hands” was
incorporated into the lobby of the new Centennial
Building in conjunction with the Heart of Gold Gala.
16 supporters gained an opportunity to support the
creation of this stirring piece and are recognized in the
lobby of the building.
The piece was donated by Pavel Barta who explained
the inspiration behind the piece.
Helping Hands
Pavel Barta
The Artist...speaks about his work...
There is a couple in the middle surrounded
by outstretched hands. These hands
represent hospital staff and all who
generously donate to make the hospital a
better place. Each pair of hands is different
as every person in unique and is able to
help in their own special way. Three sets
of hands are different and represent the
equipment used in the hospital.
With my art, I want to bring hope to those
who are helping, and thank those who give
to make all of this possible.

TeleHealth: Moving medicine forward
The use of highly sophisticated technology to
diagnose and consult with patients and health
providers in remote locations is becoming mainstream
at Kelowna General Hospital thanks to a generous
donation by The Colin & Lois Pritchard Foundation.
TeleHealth uses videoconferencing and supporting
technologies to enable clinical consultation, health
care management, health promotion, and continuing
professional education when the physicians and
patients are in separate locations. The technology
allows direct communication paired with digital
imaging and a live telephonic stethoscope. TeleHealth
is especially useful in remote or under-serviced areas
because it improves patient access to specialized
health services.
A collaboration between The Colin & Lois Pritchard
Foundation, the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation
and the UBC Faculty of Medicine - Southern Medical
Program, allowed the purchase of TeleHealth
equipment to be used by physicians, practitioners and
medical students in the new Centennial Building.
We thank The Colin & Lois Pritchard Foundation and
the UBC Okanagan Southern Medical Program for
their generous support toward the future of medicine.

Walley & Marietta Lightbody have been
supporters of the Kelowna General
Hospital and the KGH Foundation for
many years. Their Annual Celebrity
Tennis Classic & Bocce Ball Tournament
fundraiser is going on its 11th year and
has raised hundreds of thousands of
dollars for Cardiology Equipment at
KGH. This past year they were honourary
chairs of the Heart of Gold Gala.
The hospital has been my and my family's neighbour for 75 years. The lights are always on and welcoming – a bright beacon of comfort for all the citizens of Kelowna.”

Heart of Gold
As one of the closing contributions to the 'Take Care,
Take Part' Campaign, The 2012 Heart of Gold was held
in the hospital’s soon to open Centennial Building.
The event provided a fantastic opportunity for those
attending to see firsthand the difference their support
makes. The event was an unparalleled success with
384 guests raising over $630,000 for the Hospital.
The evening included valet service in the ambulance
bays followed by a tour of the new Emergency
Department hosted by KGH physicians and staff.
The welcome reception was held in the building’s
main lobby featuring a flash mob performance by
the Kelowna Actors’ Studio. Dinner was served in a
luxurious tent on the hospital grounds with a footprint
twice the size of the original hospital building.
Guests were treated to a five course meal with
pairings from some of the Okanagan’s finest wines.
After a live auction, a surprise performance by Juno
award winning singer and songwriter Sarah Harmer
accompanied dessert.
This magical evening was capped off when the lobby
was again transformed into an urban lounge featuring
live music from Thomas Kjorven, mustache & flair
bars, and living dessert tables.
The evening was jam-packed with entertainment
and once in a lifetime experiences and the KGH
Foundation is ever-grateful for the generosity of all
those who attended and supported the event.

Geoff Webb and his friends raised $2,235 by playing

and streaming their experience live online in an effort
to raise funds for the Adolescent Psychiatry Unit at
KGH. The money allowed them to purchase recreation
equipment for the youth who stay in the unit.
Sandrine Martin of Sandrine French Pastry &
Chocolate brought ‘Jour de Macaron’, an International
phenomenon, to Kelowna this year for our first ever
Macaron Day in the Okanagan. She sold boxes of
the French almond meringue confections at several
locations throughout the city and donated 25% of all
sales to the KGH Foundation. What a sweet way to
make a difference!

77 years of commitment and counting...
Christina "Chrissie" Leathley is the
KGH Foundation's 'Ultimate Volunteer'.
Chrissie's philosophy which seems to
have guided her life-long commitment
to Kelowna General Hospital is a quote
written by Edwin Markham-'There is a
destiny that makes us brothers. No one
goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others, comes back into our own'.
“Chrissie is an inspiration. She has been a member of the Kelowna
Hospital Auxiliary for 65 years and still attends all of our functions and
fundraisers. It is easy to see how much she cares about this hospital and
her commitment to helping make it the best it can be.”

In Honour of Christina “Chrissie” Leathley
Christina (Burt) Leathley started her nurses’
training at the Kelowna Hospital School
of Nursing in 1935. She graduated nursing
at the Vancouver General Hospital as the
Kelowna school closed the year before she
completed her studies.
“Chrissie” was part of the Auxiliary group
which launched the Hospital’s first volunteer
program in 1963 and subsequently became
its first Volunteer Coordinator. Along with
her activities of the Kelowna Auxiliary over
the years, Chrissie represented all the
hospital auxiliaries on the Kelowna Hospital
Society Board from 1980 through 1990 and
then on the Kelowna Hospital Foundation
Board from 1990 to 1997. The KGH
Foundation is proud to honour Chrissie as
the “Ultimate Volunteer.”
Margaret Dawson– Commited to the cause
Over my life I have always been involved in volunteer
activities and have been a member of the Kelowna
Hospital Auxiliary for 36 years. I served the Kelowna
Auxiliary through various executive positions including
Treasurer and two terms as President. In 1990 I became
the Auxiliary appointee representing all five auxiliaries to
the Board of the Kelowna and District Hospital Society,
and continued in that position for seven years, serving
as chair of the Organizational Resources Committee
and Vice Chair of the Board. In the summer of 1997
I was appointed by Government to the Okanagan
Similkameen Regional Health Board. (Forerunner of
Interior Health Authority.)
At the same time as being involved with the Hospital
Board I was also a member of the Hospital Foundation
Board whose first mandate was raising funds for the first
renal dialysis unit at KGH and a second project of the
rehab pool in the Strathcona wing which had the first
movable floor in Canada that would allow patients on
stretchers to be moved into the pool. As Vice Chair and
then Chair of the Foundation, in 1995/1996 we launched
the Campaign for Cancer Care jointly with the BC
Cancer Agency and the Canadian Cancer Society with a
goal to raise $8.6 million.
Over the years I have maintained my ties to the Kelowna
Hospital Auxiliary, and regularly volunteer in the hospital
gift shop flower room. In the fall of 1999 I was elected
as the Area Representative of 21 Auxiliaries for two years

followed by
three years as
Treasurer of
BCAHA. After a
hiatus of 5 years
I returned to the
Provincial Board
as Vice-President
and am now
serving a two
year term as
President of BCAHA.
In the spring of 2008 I was invited to sit on the Senior’s
Health Advisory Committee for Interior Health. In 2010 I
agreed to again represent the five auxiliaries to Kelowna
General Hospital on the KGH Foundation Board for a two
year term.
I was honoured in 1993 with a Life Membership in the
Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary and was a finalist for the Sarah
Donalda Treadgold 1999 Woman of the Year Award.
Volunteering at Kelowna General enriches my life and
has been a rewarding experience. I am proud to be
among the legacy donors committed to supporting KGH Foundation.
The five auxiliaries to the KGH Foundation, Cottonwoods ECU, Kelowna,
Peachland, Rutland, and Winfield, raised $876,887.16 this past year. The monies
were raised through a variety of venues and means: Rutland Thrift Shop, Catering,
Flower Sales, Cottonwoods Gift Shop, The Perking Lot at KGH, The General’s
Snackery at KGH, KGH Gift Shoppe, Easter Candy Sales, KGH Lobby Sales, Hospital
visitations, Christmas Bazaar and the Blossom Time Fair.

Blossom Time Fair
Always held the second week of May in honour of
Florence Nightengale, the 2012 annual Blossom Time Fair
marked the 60th Anniversary of the Volunteer tradition.
In 1962 The Kelowna Auxiliary Members offered a single
table of Collectibles and Treasures for sale on the south
lawn of the Kelowna General Hospital which raised funds
to purchase new linens for the Hospital. Due to growth
and popularity, the fair was relocated to the front lawn of
the Cottonwoods Care Centre.
The new Centennial Mercantile gift shop and Perking
Lot coffee bar opened in conjunction with KGH’s
Centennial Building on May 27, 2012. All proceeds from
these venues go towards the Kelowna Auxiliary, and in
turn, buy new and updated equipment for the Kelowna
General Hospital. Many thanks to all of the in-kind
donors who made the construction and design of these
sites a reality.

the five Auxiliaries supporting the KGH Foundation:

Kelowna
Peachland

Winfield
The Fair proceeds have provided over $200,000 for
patient care and comforts in our Community.
The success of the 2012 Blossom Time Fair enabled a donation exceeding $18,000 to provide improvements
to the Seniors Day Care Programs, Integrated Health
Services, as well as a variety of smaller projects and equipment purchases in our Community
Healthcare Facilities.

message from the
board chair and the CEO
Healthcare is central to the needs of everyone living
in the Okanagan and good healthcare is what the
Kelowna General Hospital Foundation works to ensure
we all receive.
We are extremely proud of our work to support the
efforts of the staff and physicians at Kelowna General
Hospital and Care Facilities throughout the Okanagan.
Our task is to work with the community to support
those projects that move healthcare forward. Over the
past year our donors have provided critical support
which includes new diagnostic equipment, care and
comfort items for patients and their families, and
innovations in the form of a TeleHealth program to
bring specialist services to everyone living in the Interior of BC.
Karen Borring-Olsen
Board Chair
The Foundation works in partnership with Interior
Health to ensure gifts provided by donors go toward
services that require our support and that fit with the
Hospital’s overall plan for development.
Kelowna General Hospital is committed to growth. It is
now a world class, tertiary teaching hospital. It provides
critical services to citizens within the Central Okanagan
and across the Interior of BC.
The Foundation is committed to supporting the
Hospital’s growth.
Commencing in the fall of 2012 we will break ground
for the development of the Interior Heart and Surgical
Centre. This new facility will provide two dedicated
cardiac surgical suites, one urological suite and 12 stateof-the-art operating rooms. The facility will serve as a
platform for training new physicians coming through
the Southern Medical Centre. This Centre will move
Kelowna General Hospital one more step forward –
and with the support of our community, the Kelowna
General Hospital Foundation will be there every step of the way.

Financial Report
Thanks to the generosity of our community and the
hard work of our many volunteers and enthusiastic staff,
the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation was able to
provide more than $2.66 million dollars to support and
enhance health care in the area. Our 'Take Care, Take
Part' Capital campaign to raise funds for the hospital
expansion project was in full swing during the year and
early in the 2013 fiscal year surpassed our $6 million goal.
To our delight, the Foundation continues to receive the
support of many individuals and businesses as we pursue
our Mission of enhancing the delivery of healthcare in
the region.
The Finance and Administration Committee is charged
with managing the assets of the Foundation to ensure
effective and efficient use of the funds so generously
donated. Our Investment Policy Statement, governing
the investment goals and options of our endowment and
other funds on hand, is reviewed and assessed annually.
The conservative focus ensured by the Investment Policy
Statement has enabled us to maintain our investment
position in turbulent economic times. To ensure the
highest standard of financial accountability, the financial
statements of the Foundation were audited by KPMG LLP
Kelowna and are available from the Foundation office.
Thanks to the hard work and attention to detail provided
by Director of Finance, Lori Uzelman and her team, no
audit adjustments were required. This allows the Board
a great level of confidence in the quarterly financial
statements presented to them throughout the year
which are used to manage the organization.
administrative costs to dollars earned is often toted as a
measure of organizational effectiveness. The calculation
of this ratio varies by organization. The Foundation
has developed and adopted a formula to calculate an
administrative cost ratio which is used consistently as
one method of assessing our effectiveness. We are
pleased to report an administrative cost ratio throughout
the year of less than 17%.
Different types of fundraising have different costs
associated with them. We are fortunate to have attracted
a highly skilled and talented staff that recognize this
and guide the organization’s fundraising activities
accordingly. As part of our finance and administrative
committee mandate we have reviewed and are in the
process of finalizing human resources policies to ensure
that our dedicated staff continues to be treated in the
professional manner they deserve.
Charitable organizations are under ever increasing
scrutiny from the public and from government to
ensure stated charitable purposes are met. The ratio of
I am honoured to have been a part of this organization
for the last six years. As Treasurer and Chair of the
Finance Committee I have been fortunate to have
worked with many really wonderful people. I thank
all of the Committee members for the invaluable
contributions, especially the lively debate on sensitive
issues. I continue to be amazed at the dedication and
hard work exhibited by our Auxiliary members and the
amazing volunteers who support the Auxiliary work, in
particular at the Kelowna Hospital business ventures. I
commend each staff member for the focus they bring to
their positions and the commitment to the cause. Lastly,
I salute and thank all of our donors. The Foundation will
continue to be my charity of choice and I urge everyone
to join us in working to support the enhancement of
health care in the region.
