ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 Photo by Tom Topinka Photo by Tom Topinka THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OVER 2,300 SPARC STUDENTS IN 2014-2015 Dear Friends of SPARC, What a year! 2014-2015 saw the continued advancement of SPARC’s mission in the community, with SPARC serving more than 2,300 students in our broad range of training and outreach programs for young people. But rather than focusing on quantity, we are far more focused on the quality of our programs, and we continue to hear from students, alumni, and parents that SPARC’s faculty members are having a profound influence on our students’ lives, which benefits them on the stage and in the broader life beyond. 2014-2015 also saw the preparations for, and the beginning of, a massive transformation of the SPARC Center. The capital campaign that began in 2008 with the purchase of the campus on North Hamilton Street has entered its final phase with the renovation to the heart of the facility. As many of you know, SPARC has been bursting at the seams for several years, with students and audiences jammed into tiny lobbies that were never intended for the volume of people now regularly visiting SPARC. So in late July 2015, demolition of the center of the building began, and eight months later we will have a modern, spacious facility that supports the educational needs of our broadly diverse student population. Three times as much studio teaching space, an enhanced technical theatre instructional space, new restrooms, and an elevator to our second floor will finally come into existence after several years of wishing and planning! We look forward to welcoming you to our new space in the months ahead, including at a celebration event in Fall 2016. SPARC’s service to young people is due to the passion and commitment of donors, faculty, parents and grandparents, volunteers, and community leaders. Thank you for your support! Yours at SPARC, Ryan T. Ripperton Executive Director MISSION TO INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE, AGES 3-18, TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL THROUGH QUALITY TRAINING IN THE PERFORMING ARTS. SPARC DEVELOPS LIFE SKILLS AMONG YOUNG PERFORMERS, PREPARING THEM FOR PRODUCTIVE LIVES AND LEADERSHIP. Photo by Sid Koerin 2014-2015 DONORS SPARC is grateful for all the generous donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses. Less than half of SPARC’s budget comes from tuition and ticket sales so without these gifts, we would not exist. We acknowledge donors who made contributions to SPARC from September 1, 2014 - August 31, 2015. SPARC makes every effort for accuracy; if you find a mistake or omission, kindly contact the Development Office. Thank you! Course offerings encompass music, dance, acting, and theater production for beginner to advanced students; opportunities are available year-round at the SPARC Center and satellite locations across the Richmond region. For serious theatre students, SPARC is the provider of choice for young talent among casting agencies for local and regional theatre, screen production, and commercial advertising. SPARC graduates have been accepted into top university performance programs such as The Juilliard School, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Carnegie-Mellon University School of the Arts, North Carolina School of the Arts, and the University of the Arts. SPARC has trained a number of national-level performing artists. While many alumni have gone on to successful careers in the theatre, all students use the valuable skills they learn in SPARC classes—especially confidence, creativity, and character—in their everyday life and professional careers. FINANCIAL AID In 34 years, SPARC has never turned a child away because their family couldn’t afford tuition. SPARC makes this possible by awarding financial aid to over 200 students annually to participate in its enrollment-based classes, camps, and productions (approximately 14% of the students participating). The median household income of families receiving aid from SPARC ranges between $23,000 and $28,000 for a family of four. SPOTLIGHT Formed in 2014, SPOTLIGHT is SPARC’s traveling ensemble featuring some of our most experienced and dedicated students. SPOTLIGHT students inspire and engage the Richmond community as they perform before audiences at events like The Richmond Forum and RVA Fireworks on the James. SPARC’s outreach programs are funded by individual, corporate, and foundation donors, enabling them to be offered to students at little or no charge. Restricted and Annual Fund gifts allow SPARC to continue our forwardfunding model for our outreach programs. NEW VOICES FOR THE THEATER Continuing a 26 year legacy, NEW VOICES FOR THE THEATER, is a nationally renowned high school playwriting program. Each year, over 150 high school students across Virginia submit original one-act plays for adjudication, and the top eight playwrights are invited to Richmond for two weeks in the summer to reside at VCU, hone their craft under the guidance of a professional playwright-in-residence, and ultimately have their plays staged by professional actors and directors in front of a live and enthusiastic audience. STAGES Debuted in 2006, STAGES is a vital outreach program that takes place in six Richmond City and Henrico County elementary schools and two neighborhood centers. Weekly performing arts classes are taught to students in 2nd and 3rd grades during the school day for a full academic year. Lessons focus on oral language skills, including confidence, articulation, and vocal projection. Program assessments show the average student improves oral language Standards of Learning (SOLs) by more than 44%. More than 800 students, predominantly in low-income schools, participate in STAGES each year. LIVE ART Piloted in 2012, LIVE ART is an innovative performing arts program serving more than 200 students, half with disabilities and half typically developing. Over 40 teaching artists, educators, and musicians provide weekly instruction involving music, dance, puppetry, acting, singing, and painting to small groups of students with all abilities. The 9-month program culminates in a student performance with nationally recognized professional musicians before an audience of 3,500 at the Altria Theater.
