Thursday’s Weekly Newsletter Volume 49 Issue 10 March 10th 2016 Web site www.traralgonharriers.org.au Some keen juniors get ready to kick of the 2016 Community Fun Run Full Report Page 2 Harriers Weekly Newsletter March 10th 2016 Page No. 1 The express report The five kilometre run heading up Kay Street hill. Matt Buckland pictured centre of image (blue top) running for Lavalla Catholic College photographs burning harp photography THE traffic on Kay Street belied a lazy Sunday morning when Traralgon was transformed into a runners' realm yesterday as 561 people tackled the Traralgon Harriers Community Fun Run and Walk. The five kilometre run or walk, combined with a 1.5km course for children, raised about $5500 for Gippsland Rotary Centenary House as the community came together in the name of fun and fitness. Harrier’s president Will Hanrahan said the event, which drew a few extra faces than last year's, was another raging success. "It was a lovely day, the kids' event is an absolute treat. It's a highlight for people to stand around and watch the kids," Hanrahan said. Alexandra Bull was the quickest of the women in 19.39, ahead of Sarah Lewis (19.43) and adventure racing phenom Kathryn Preston (19.47). The other competitive platform was the participation stakes, which this year was comprehensively claimed by Lavalla Catholic College with a whopping 88 entrants. Traralgon Football Netball Club was another standout with 47 taking part, including top five overall finisher Matt Northe. "That was an absolute standout, Lavalla Catholic College had 88 which is really setting the bar high," Hanrahan said. "The footy club had 47 which for their first year was a very good effort." Federal member for Gippsland Darren Chester forked out a rounded up $300 toward the cause after 140 runners beat him across the line at $2 a pop under his self-issued challenge. Harriers Weekly Newsletter March 10th 2016 Page No. 3 Traralgon Community Fun Run 2016 It can be said this run is like having the R4TK event in your own backyard. It is a “A” class event which produces A grade results and is definitely one not to be missed. Just being there and seeing Mick Bridle {84} sprint to the line in 42:55 is enough to motivate and reward anyone who was in attendance. I really enjoy doing events where I know most of the runners so you can reflect and marvel at the performances of others. With so many Traralgon Harriers putting in great performances it is hard to write about everyone so I will just reflect on a few that caught my eye. Riley Evans 17:00 gave Ryan Wissmer 16:09 the fright of his life when he turned for home and saw Riley only 20 meters behind him. He is not used to having someone so close to him. Peter Evans 18:25 continue to improve at a consistent rate. I am sure Glen Crawford 19:26, Darren Fletcher 19:58, Owen Notting 21:02, Edi Murat 21:29, Simone Forbes 21:29, Brad Harkin 21:37, Jen Northe 22:03 and Anna Cardillo 23:50 just to name a few would also be happy with their runs. The top three are. Super Mum Kathryn Preston 19:47- I was fortunate enough to spend a bit of time running with Kathryn and Mattias. It was quite entertaining hearing Mattias singing away Go! Go! Go!. Kathryn struggled a bit on the uphill but came flying passed me once we turned for home a super effort. So close Hilary Meyer 20:00- I knew when she went flying past me early in the race she was on a mission. The usual chatty Hilary didn’t speak a word. So close to breaking 20 minutes but still a big P/B. Hilary has had a big workload lately and seems to be excelling on it. This doesn’t surprise me that she can handle it. She is a natural talented runner with a good technique and has a big engine to go with it. Should be running sub 20 minutes consistently soon. The reluctant runner makes and audacious debut- Finally my son Josh blew me away with his run. Josh is not runner. Since he started playing footy I have constantly try to encourage him to run harriers to improve his running. It wasn’t until 18 months ago that he finally started doing something to improve his running. Although he started listing to me on the finer points of running he wouldn’t take the next step and race. Harriers Weekly Newsletter March 10th 2016 Page No. 4 Traralgon Community Fun Run 2016 continued: I tried to get him to the track over the summer but I had no success. When the Traralgon Football Club decided to support the Fun Run Josh had no option but to run. All week he kept telling me I cannot run 5km without stopping. How do I run it? If go hard I will have to walk up the hill. I said take it easy and just finish in around 30 minutes and you will be ok. He sister Mel said don’t worry the adrenalin will kick in with the atmosphere of such a big race and you will be surprised how well you go. When he crossed the line in 22:09 I couldn’t believe it. The scary part is he run sub 4 minutes for the last km. I don’ think I will be taking him to the track soon; I need something up my sleeve to try and stay in front of him. TRARALGON HARRIERS’ RACE REPORT 3/3/2016 EDWARD HUNTER RESERVE 5KM HANDICAP The bushland trails at Edward Hunter Reserve in Moe was a wonderful location for last Thursday evening’s 5km race. The handicap event encompassed two hilly loops on twisting walking tracks through native bush with the lake as a focal point. The course was thus satisfyingly demanding and always interesting, requiring mental commitment to maintain reasonable momentum to the top of the steep bits before holding on into the level sections and then recovering on the downs. Surprisingly high humidity made the race even more challenging and left most participants dripping wet at the finish. The variable terrain offered by this type of running is a great strength builder and less likely to incur overuse injuries and restricted flexibility from repetitive running action on hard, constant surfaces. The handicap component was won by Annette Anderson in a net time of 33 minutes 7 seconds. Simone Forbes finished second in a resounding time of 24:24 – the fastest outright time amongst the females. Harriers Weekly Newsletter March 10th 2016 Page No. 5 Last Thursdays Race Report: Tony Arrowsmith, embarking on yet another running comeback, finished third in 27:47 The three outright fastest females were: Simone Forbes, 24:24; Karen Graham, 24:49 and Sue Elsdon, 25:32. Amongst the three quickest males were: Ian Cornthwaite, 20:25; Glenn Graham in a display of hill running strength, 21:05, finally turning the tables on ultra-competitive Bryan Cake, 21:23. RESULTS: 1. Annette Anderson 33:07, 2. Simone Forbes 24:24, 3. Tony Arrowsmith 27:47, 4. Warren Shields 24:53, 5. Glenn Graham 21:05, 6. Chris Gallivan 28:05, 7. Bryan Cake 21:23, 8. In order to achieve this goal we have re-established a welcoming committee. Many thanks to Helen Reeves, Peter Sanders, Todd Houghton, Simone Forbes, Mandy Ellis, Kris Vallak and Steve McLeod who have offered to help out. However we are looking for a few more people to assist them in this important role. Please contact Helen or Will if you would like to help out? Two members of the welcoming committee will be rostered on each Thursday and it is important that everyone recognises the difference in welcoming and the other duty tasks. The role of the Welcomer is to meet with people who are first timers or reasonably new to the club, to give out the club flyer, to answer any questions and assist them to understand all about the club. This is not one quick conversation but an ongoing process over a number of weeks or months. NB. It is important that everyone realises that those on the welcoming committee are not on the general duty roster. Many thanks to everyone who has helped out with the duty roster over the year!! The welcoming committee is also looking for members who are willing to run with new people for at least their first run, we are calling this role Welcome Runners. The welcoming committee will match the welcome runners with someone of similar ability so that you don’t have to severely compromise your run but you are unlikely to get a PB that night. Welcoming and Duty: This role is simply to be friendly, run at the new person’s pace and ensure they know the course and don’t get lost on the first night. Some of the people who have indicated their willingness to be welcome runners are: Kaye Livingstone, Belinda Issell, Barry Higgins, Karen Graham, Belinda Ruff. Anyone else who is willing to assist in this way please contact Helen Reeves or one of the Welcoming Committee? Kind regards Will Hanrahan on behalf of the Committee of Management Harriers Weekly Newsletter March 10th 2016 Page No. 7 Race Change Chook Hill schedule for the 17th March 2016 has been swapped with Tour De West on the 31st March 2016. This is always an important date on the club calendar because it is where the committee is elected for the coming year, and is an opportunity to consider other important matters which effect the future of the club. It is not just about electing the committee and anyone who has a genuine interest in the future of the club should attend. Anyone nominating for a position on the committee must lodge a completed nomination form with the club secretary (Rob Preston) by 6.50pm on 17/3/16. Nomination form can be found here. If anyone is interested in joining the committee please discuss your intention with Rob or Will. Several current members of the Committee of Management have indicated they will step down so it is important we have some new members interested in helping run the club.
