UNIVERSITY AT A GLANCE Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) was established in 1999 with a mission to serve farming community particularly of Jammu region. During this short span of 17 years the university has made rapid progress in education, research and extension services. The academic excellence, need based research and support through extension services for enhanced livelihood security of the farmers, have made its presence felt among the clientele. The progress has been facilitated through infrastructural development viz. buildings, equipment, farmlands and efficient research management system together with qualified and talented personnel for undertaking teaching, research and extension. Through the untiring efforts of teaching and non-teaching faculty and students of the University, an academic and research environment has been created to meet future challenges of agriculture sector in the state. The KVKs have proven an effective bridge among University, State Departments and farming community for transfer of technology. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS The efforts are on way for the modernization of its experimental farms. Excellent infrastructure for seed production and processing has been created. The financial support of ICAR is duly acknowledged. The high yielding varieties of different crops have been developed and released and are being popularized for cultivation. Ranbir basmati, Sanwal basmati, Basmati-564 of rice; RSP-81, RSP-303 and RSP 561 of wheat; SCS-3 of chickpea (pulses); DGS-1 (gobhi sarson); RSPR-01 and RSPR-03 of Raya and RSPT-1 and RSPT-2 of Toria are some of the promising varieties released by the University. In addition to own varieties, university has also introduced high yielding varieties of various crops developed at national level. Many high yielding varieties of rice, wheat, gobhi sarson, toria, Knol khol, radish, fenugreek, coriander, broccoli and cauliflower are in pipeline. Three promising cultivars of Peach viz., Shan-ePunjab, Florda prince and Early grand have been popularized in the subtropical region of Jammu division. Four varieties of Gladiolus viz., Prosperity, Eurovision, Jyotsana and Advance Red and Pusa Narangi of Marigold have been extensively adopted for commercial cultivation in Jammu region. A bio-intensive IPM module through integration of local virulent HaNPV strain, egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum and use of pheromone traps has been developed and demonstrated for production of organic tomatoes. Year round cultivation of mushroom has been standardized and popularized among farmers. Agro-technology for unfruitfulness of olive has been developed and demonstrated in farmer's field. University has produced quality seed of wheat (845.79q), paddy (1017.34q), pulses (2.68q) and oilseeds (1.02q) during 2014-15. For enhancing the productive and reproductive status of the livestock macro and micronutrient imbalances prevalent in various districts of Jammu division have been identified and area specific mineral mixtures formulated. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES Directorate of Extension is engaged in transfer of technologies through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) located in six districts of Jammu Division. Krishi Vigyan Kendras are imparting trainings to farmers, field functionaries and rural youth in agriculture and allied sectors, and also in other income generating activities that may supplement the income of farm families. The training programmes are designed based on the principles of “Learning by Doing”. The effectiveness of KVKs has further been enhanced by adding front line demonstration on major agricultural technologies. On farm testing (OFTs) are laid for assessing location specificity of the generated technologies. The extension specialists of the University, in coordination with development Departments of State Government, regularly organize demonstrations, exhibitions, Kissan Melas, Kissan goshties, village visit programme and officers monthly workshops to create awareness among the farmers regarding new crop varieties, innovative agro-technologies and improved animal husbandry practices. The proposed Kissan Mela would focus on demonstration of the transferable technologies to improve agriculture productivity and sustainability, which has a worldwide concern.
