OH&S – the numbers
US workplace data
• Approximately 4.5 million injuries and illnesses each
year in private sector workplaces.
• Direct cost of compensation for workplace injuries and
illnesses was nearly $1 billion per week
(Source: 2004 report by Liberty Mutual Insurance)
• If we consider the indirect costs – such as lost
production, the cost of hiring temporary workers,
overtime, training, etc. – the estimated cost to
businesses ranges between $200 to $300 billion per
year.

CAN/CSA Z1000
• The Standard addresses occupational health
and safety
• The purpose is to reduce or prevent
occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities
• It is not intended to address product and
services safety
QMI - Advancing Business Excellence
PDCA Model
• CAN/CSA Z1000 is based on the proven
Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model
• This is the same ‘Continual Improvement’
model on which the ISO 9001, ISO 14001
and related standards are based
• Used by over 900,000 leading organizations
worldwide
QMI - Advancing Business Excellence
PDCA Model
• Requires a comprehensive and
systematic process for the ongoing
identification and assessment of
workplace hazards / risks, and
implementing control measures
to eliminate or mitigate these
• Successful implementation
depends on effective management
leadership and employee
involvement

• Review your existing OHSMS to assess conformance
with the standard
• If you have not yet established your OHSMS, gather
and review information on existing OH&S programs
(Compare existing practices against the requirements

requirements; evaluate compliance
QMI - Advancing Business Excellence
Planning
• Establish processes for ongoing hazard
identification and risk assessment
• Document your objectives and targets. These should
be based on applicable legal requirements, the results
of risk assessments, and other requirements
• Develop plans to achieve the objectives and targets
