Congratulations to Mrs. Hitner’s Grade 5 at Cherry Avenue and Mr. Paniccia’s Grade 3 at
Sunrise Drive Elementary Schools, winners of the Library Card Contest held in January 2011.
Both classes had 100% of children with library cards and won a pizza party for their classes. Pizza was donated by Sayville Pizza.
Mrs. Rooney’s and Mrs.Toth’s Advisory classes in the Middle School were also winners and received pizza coupons donated by Sal’s Pizzeria.

2011-2012 Budget Vote & Trustee Election May 17, 2011
M essage from the L ibrary
Board of Trustees
In the nearly two years that the new
library has been open, there has not
been an increase in the operating
budget. Grants, LIPA rebates, solar
panels and a geo-thermal system,
combined with careful budget
planning, have enabled the Trustees
to keep the expense lines in check.
This year we are faced with costs
outside of our control – the New
York State Retirement System funding
requirement alongside of increases
to health insurance premiums.
The Board of Trustees has presented
a 2% increase in the budget for the
coming fiscal year (see details on
page 2). The result is an estimated
$8.82 annual increase for a home
assessed at $40,000. This is an
estimate as the 2011-2012 tax rates
are not available until August 2011
– after the start of the budget year in
July. For further information about
how the tax rate is calculated and the
final assessed valuation of the town’s

Fourteen thousand (and growing)
library members all recognize
that Sayville Library is the best
value around. Circulation numbers
continue to increase as do interlibrary
loans. That’s right - as a Sayville
Library cardholder you have access
to the libraries throughout Suffolk
County with a combined collection
of over eight million books, movies
and music. Most importantly, your
Sayville Library staff is second to
none in their abilities and eagerness
to assist you and ensure your visit is
a productive one.
When you go to the polls on May
17th, you will be electing a Library
Trustee for a five year term. The
incumbent is Sharon Lippman.
Please remember to vote on Tuesday,
May 17th, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM
at Sayville High School on Brook
Street.

such as Quick Flicks have been
well received. E-readers are now
available for that long vacation that
requires lots of reading material in an
easy to carry format. Our E-readers
are loaded with 100 classics and the
latest New York Times bestsellers.
The 24/7 mailboxes provide for easy
pickup of materials when the library
is closed.

Health Education’s workshop provides
vital information about reducing the
risk for breast cancer. In addition, they
instruct participants in the most effective
methods of early detection using the
MammaCare(r) method. To learn breast

resemble real breast tissue. This hands-on
demonstration promotes early detection
skills, helping participants defend against
breast cancer throughout their lives.

News from the Friends,
The Friends, vendors and shoppers spent a good day at our 6th
Annual Yard and Collectible Sale on March 26th. Everyone who
purchased a cookbook received a free raffle for a Movie Theatre Basket.
A Fifty-fifty was also held. The Yard and Collectible Sale was a major
fundraiser for us and all the tables sold out!
Our next activity will be the Bake Sale at the Fire Island Ferries,
courtesy of the Stein Family on Friday, May 27, 2011. Contributions of
baked good will be appreciated; and any information can be obtained
by contacting Kristen @ 567-9032. We have been warmly received by the
ferry patrons in the past and look forward to another rewarding year.
Cookbooks, attractively gift wrapped are still available at the Circulation

American Folklife Center collects,
preserves, and makes accessible the
personal accounts of American war
veterans so that future generations may
hear directly from veterans and better
understand the realities of war.
