WHERE EVERYONE COMES TO PLAY 2016 Fall Program Guide WALDO COUNTY YMCA Waldo County YMCA 157 Lincolnville Avenue Belfast, Maine 04915 207.338.4598 • www.waldocountyymca.org The Waldo County YMCA is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. CHARITABLE GIVING 1 The Waldo County YMCA opened its doors to the public in February 2001. The board and staff remain focused on our mission. We strive to make our programs, memberships, services and facility available to everyone; the YMCA never turns people away due to an inability to pay. Annual Campaign You can help build a better community by partnering with the Waldo County YMCA. Individual and business donations provide financial assistance to those who need it the most. On a daily basis, our staff and volunteers meet the unique needs of Waldo County children and their families. Your support will have a lasting and positive impact on many lives. The Waldo County YMCA runs its Annual Campaign beginning in June. You can help by volunteering or contributing to this community effort. Contributions are welcome all year round. Capital Campaign In 1998, after years of careful planning, the Waldo County YMCA Board of Directors initiated a capital campaign to raise funds to build the YMCA facility. With generous support from the whole community we raised over $4.7 million. The facility opened in February 2001, housing a full gymnasium, walking track, community rooms, wellness and fitness rooms. The Board of Directors planned the full-facility YMCA in phases, vowing to complete the initial facility (Phase I) without incurring long-term debt. Phase I was financed with short-term debt that was paid in full in January 2004. The Waldo County YMCA celebrated the official opening of the Tom & Sally Savage Pool Complex on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Community donors and contributors, donating $4.2 million to the pool complex campaign, celebrated with a tour of the natatorium. Come in and visit us today!! Endowment What better way to leave a legacy than to support your YMCA’s Endowment Fund? You can make a lifetime gift or bequest to strengthen and extend the services of the Waldo County YMCA. The following are options of how you can contribute; • Making or revising a will directing a percentage, a fixed amount or an eventual gift to the Waldo County YMCA Endowment Fund. • Naming the Waldo County YMCA Endowment Fund as a primary or secondary beneficiary or owner of a new or existing insurance policy. • Making an outright gift of money, property, stock, or insurance to the Waldo County YMCA Endowment Fund. The Waldo County YMCA is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. All contributions to the Waldo County YMCA are tax deductible. HEALTH & FITNESS 9 Body Composition Assessment (please schedule an appointment) Timely and accurate measurements can have a positive effect on your health. This assessment differentiates between fat mass and lean mass and allows you to understand why clothes fit looser with only a small weight loss. To protect your modesty and for accessibility of the measurement sites, women should wear shorts and a sports bra (and a T-shirt if you wish), and for men, a tank shirt and shorts. A tape measure will be used to take a variety of body circumferences. Skin-fold calipers will be used to estimate body fat percentage. Do not exercise in the hours prior to your appointment for most accurate results. Efficient measurements can be quick and relatively non-intrusive. Sessions are 15-20 minutes in length. Consider scheduling additional appointments every three months. The accountability provided by periodic measurements helps to keep you on track with your fitness goals. All assessments are administered by a certified personal trainer. Fees: $10 Annual Members $18 3-Month & Non-Members Fitness Assessment (please schedule an appointment) This private session of fitness testing and evaluation will allow you to find out what your current fitness levels are. It will aid in the development of your exercise program by establishing baseline status and identifying areas of health/injury risk. Avoid exercising immediately prior to your appointment to assist in getting an accurate heart rate assessment. ASSESSMENT OPTIONS INCLUDE: Cardiovascular Endurance: Tests are performed on either a bicycle, treadmill or step to measure current aerobic efficiency. Non-Cardiovascular Assessments: • Body Composition: Circumference measurements are taken at various anatomical sites. A skin-fold caliper is utilized to calculate percentage of body fat. • Muscular Strength/Endurance: Upper and lower body are evaluated using bench and leg press machines, push-ups and abdominal crunches. • Joint Flexibility: Specific muscle group testing evaluates the range-of-motion of hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, shoulders, and lower back. All men and women 40 and older will be provided with a medical clearance form that requires a physician’s signature prior to physical fitness testing. All evaluations are administered by a certified personal trainer. Sessions are approximately 1 hour in length. Fees: $25 Annual Members $40 3-Month & Non-Members 10 YMCA FITNESS ORIENTATION (please schedule an appointment) Complimentary one-time fitness orientations are an offering that all new members (ages 12 or older) or inactive current members can schedule. The goal of the orientation is to introduce members to basic equipment and review what the YMCA offers, where things can be found, and how they can get help if and when they need it. For youth ages 12-16 the orientation is mandatory. You must complete a Personal Fitness Profile and return to the Front Desk. You will be contacted by phone to schedule an appointment. Your fitness orientation will be approximately one hour long, 1-½ hours if two people are oriented together. Come dressed in comfortable exercise attire. Wear athletic shoes, no street shoes please. We will review your Personal Fitness Profile to ensure that your workout is safe and effective. Your orientation will not be a challenging workout for your body, but rather a time for learning proper techniques and guidelines. Personal Fitness Training (PFT) (please schedule an appointment) Are you just starting out, bored with the same old exercise program, or just ready to move on to the next level? Our Certified Fitness Professionals can help you design or update a program so that you get maximum results! This varies from student to student and there is no hard and fast answer. The amount of time needed to achieve a black belt is generally considered to be four or five years, training at least three times a week, but this can vary with time constraints and the ability to attend classes. Achieving any rank in TKD is not purely a feat of physical training, however. Discipline, self confidence, and understanding of the overall philosophy of TKD, contribute to the character of the student and ultimately to that student’s achievements. Hosts Brian & Jessica were raised in Maine on family farms, and decided that farm life was not for them. Brian wanted to raise some horses when he retired and Jessica wanted to raise the kids only and possibly a small livestock animal such as pygmy goats. Back in 2008, an accidental trip to pick up a guinea pig for the kids led their family to their first face to face meeting with a water buffalo. At that moment, it was love at first sight! Since then, they have been on an incredible journey, learning, laughing and getting a lot of awkward looks…Water Buffalo???...Really???!!! They never dreamed that life would take them down this road, but it has been priceless! Our tour will consist of a ride out to the pasture along with a tour through the barn. We will also have a guided cheese and yogurt tasting! After our tour our group will have lunch (at your own expense) at Lori’s Café. Armed with a camera and a pen, she attended many fairs over eight years in search of images and stories of the horsemen. Sally’s book is the result of her attempts to document the simplicity and serenity of rural life and the excitement and energy of Kerry horse fairs.
