I enthusiastically invite all Rheumatology and other musculoskeletal providers in Wisconsin to attend this year’s Annual Meeting, which is going to expand significantly the offerings of our previous meetings: 1) We are especially encouraging membership and attendance by rheumatology fellows, and by providers of all designations, MD, DO, PA, NP, RN and all students in programs leading to any of those degrees. Furthermore, practitioners from other specialties such as orthopedics, general medicine and primary care will be most welcome as attendees and as members. 2) We will continue the excellent scientific and clinical curriculum sessions you have enjoyed in the past. We plan to have some truly cutting edge science that will shape our specialty in coming years, as well as nationally recognized clinicians to discuss important clinical issues we face every day. 3) We all have had the experience of being at a gathering of providers, and invariably discussion turns to how difficult, expensive, frustrating and time-consuming it is becoming to simply deliver the quality of care to our patients that we know they deserve and that we all strive to achieve. We feel individually helpless to change this worsening spiral. None of us alone can do much except to complain to each other, and that will change nothing. We rheumatology providers MUST work to make our voices heard as a conglomerate. Only in this way can we hope to protect our practices and our ability to deliver excellent rheumatology care by influencing policy and legislation. Therefore, one of the major additions to the WRA Annual Meeting this year, and henceforth, will be sessions delivered by nationally known people who are knowledgeable about such affairs and who have vast experience in this important arena. As a group, we must get up-to-speed with the rapidly increasing impact the insurance industry and the government (ACA, Medicare and Medicaid) have on our practices. Coding, the new ICD-10, reimbursement, the ACA, and other similar issues are crucially important and we must make our voices heard. This year’s meeting is designed to educate us all in how to do that most effectively. 4) Related to #3 is how to incorporate practice management changes to deal with these issues. We plan to have speakers on these topics as well. 5) In upcoming years we intend to add a session consisting of a series of interesting and/or challenging cases presented by trainees or by whoever wants to present them! 6) We are also making a special appeal for providers in our academic institutions to attend and join WRA, with their trainees. Lifetime membership is only $75 without annual dues and we plan to keep the charge for the meeting to a minimum. Many other states have active and robust state-wide rheumatology associations, which do allow rheumatology providers to speak as a group. It is time we join them. As is evident, the meeting will address many important issues and thus will be longer. This year it is to be held in Lake Geneva, in warm weather, which we hope will encourage providers from all corners of the state and from Northern Illinois to attend. Yes, we are considering holding future meetings more centrally in the state. The 2014 Annual Meeting will start Friday, May 30th in the late afternoon and will run through Saturday till about 3:00 p.m. I hope to see many of you in Lake Geneva this year and in meetings to come! Rheumatologists need to learn more about this relatively complex system. Progressive Systemic Sclerosis, often called Scleroderma, is a complex disorder that has a limited array of treatment options. Nonetheless, progress is being made. A review of this disorder is therefore important for practicing rheumatologists. There is an explosion in the number of new biologic agents available for treatment of all autoimmune diseases. Rheumatologists can benefit greatly from a review of currently available biologic drugs, AND from awareness of what agents are poised for release in the next few years. The proposed ICD-10 coding system is far more complex than the existing ICD9, and has potential to increase costs to practitioners in all fields of clinical medicine. Rheumatologists need to understand the impact of ICD-10 on their practices, as this system is scheduled to be activated in October 2015. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of the WRA 2014 Annual Meeting, attendees should be able to: 1. Describe the basic structure of the new ICD-10 classification system, especially as it pertains to rheumatologic disease. 2. Explain the new subclassifications of disease description as put forth by ICD-10 and gain an appreciation of the new system’s specificity and complexity. 3. Explain legislative trends regarding practice management and private payer reform of impact to the medical community and rheumatologists throughout the country and related proposals in Wisconsin. 4. Formulate a more thorough understanding of practice management and administrative simplification measures, including uniform prior authorization forms, fair contracting, and insurance transparency, and how they will impact practice management and patient care. 5. Identify the most recent legislative updates from the Wisconsin Medical Society, the State and Federal governments. 6. Describe progress in understanding mechanisms of immune dysregulation in 7. 8. 9. 10. rheumatic diseases, and how biologic drugs of the present and the future will be used to treat rheumatic disorders. Explain advances in singlecell immune profiling via mass cytometry and its application to rheumatic diseases. Review the five melanocortin receptors and the family of melanocortin peptide ligands with emphasis on those that are involved in immunoregulation and immunomodulation. Describe future clinical uses of melanocortin receptor agonists. Explain the recent advance in diagnosis and treatment of Progressive Systemic Sclerosis, and all of its complications.
