~ Winter Driving and Cruise Control ~
Snow, ice, slush, deep pools of water and even oil on water are slippery. These winter conditions plus snowfall, fog,
rain and longer hours of darkness demand your full attention and quick reactions.
The problem with using cruise control in those circumstance, comes when the car in front of you
swerves, wildlife steps onto the road, you skid or something else unexpected happens. You might not have the time
to cancel cruise control and respond quickly enough. Braking to release the control – especially on a slick spot – can
make a bad situation worse.
Another trouble with using cruise control in winter is that it can work against you.
Here’s how: you set the cruise control at the desired speed and the vehicle is programmed to maintain that speed.
When your vehicle slows below the chosen speed, the control feeds more gas to your engine so you accelerate.
Speeding up can happen at the wrong time like:

When your front wheels are turning into an icy corner

When going uphill and your tires hit a slick patch

While driving on slippery bridge decks, where the temperature can be colder than the pavement.
In addition, while travelling downhill you may exceed the control’s set speed. And winter is not the time for
speeding up! “Drive for the conditions” are the buzzwords of the season, and this means reducing your speed
below the posted limit, should your route serve up slippery surfaces, poor visibility, or other challenges.
Even if you start out on a sunny day someplace where the pavement is bare, in winter the story can soon change.
And you don’t know exactly what’s ahead (or beneath) you until you get there. A vivid example is Strathcona
Parkway, where within 18 kilometres you can move from sunshine into a blizzard.
You, your passengers and others on the road want a safe drive, not slip, slide, glide or hydroplane. So, when
you shift into winter leave the cruise control alone.
This vehicle feature can be a treat when driving bare, open, mostly flat roads, in good light, from April to
September. But never use cruise control in winter, where the place it takes you, could be out of control.

With March break just around the corner and the kids preparing for time away from school, Bestway
reminds drivers to drive more carefully and with extra vigilance. Kids out of school, means kids out on the
streets and it is up to drivers to make sure those kids stay safe.
Slow down, obey traffic laws and be a little more aware of the smaller pedestrians when out on
the roads.

April showers bring May flowers… and wet driving conditions. Now that the long winter is over,
many people will take to the roads again for holiday road trips and long weekend getaways. Bestway
Driver Training reminds you to check your tires (and the spare) at least once a month and before every
long trip.

Share the road. Warm weather brings motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians out on
the roads. Because more and more pedestrians have developed habits of texting, talking
on cellphones, and listening to music, they can be unaware of the traffic around them.
Be extra cautious around intersections and in residential communities.

More fatalities occur on Canadian roads during the summer months than at any
other time of year, including the winter holiday season. Alcohol, fatigue and
aggressive driving are often implicated in these tragedies. Whether you’re out for a day
trip, travelling to the cottage or on a cross-country holiday, Bestway Driver Training urges
all Canadians to put safety first when you set out on your summer travels.

With a new school year rolling
around the corner, remember to
protect your children while taking
them to school and/or activities.
Car seat use reduces the risk
for death to infants (aged <1
year) by 71%; and toddlers
(aged 1–4 years) by 54% in
passenger vehicles. Booster
seat use reduces the risk for
serious injury by 45% for
children aged 4–8 years when
compared with seat belt use
alone.

On average, 120 people are injured in 83 crashes on Halloween night in B.C. every year.
Drivers, trick-or-treaters and grown-up ghosts need to take extra precautions on the roads.
Crashes involving pedestrians occur most often between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the same time many children will head out
trick-or-treating.
TIPS FOR DRIVERS:
* Don’t get spooked! Children may be difficult to see while trick-or-treating. They may be walking in unexpected places
like driveways, alleys and parking lots or may cross the street at unpredictable places. Make sure there are no small
children behind your vehicle by walking around it before getting in.
* Secure your car! Halloween is second only to New Year’s Day for vehicle vandalism incidents on holidays or annual
celebrations.
* Plan a safe, not scary ride home! If your Halloween festivities include alcohol, plan a safe ride home before you head
out.

Impaired driving has consistently ranked as the leading road safety concern
among more than 80% of Canadians for the past decade.
The holidays are right up ahead, gatherings are bound to happen. Keep yourself and others
safe by not only preparing alternate methods to get home but also by reporting any
impaired drivers.

Scheduling
Our students are of paramount importance to us. 100% customer satisfaction is our objective. However, there are circumstances
beyond our control which may require a change in car, instructor or lesson schedule. We make every effort to minimize these
disruptions, but must reserve the right to make these changes when they are necessary. When telephoning to schedule lessons, please
have your learner’s license number, availability schedule and patience in hand. Scheduling lessons does take time to make sure that we
can accommodate the student's as well as the instructor's needs. **Please note that we do book approx. 3 - 4 weeks in advance for
afternoon/evening and weekend lessons.
Course Fees are Valid for One Year
All lesson/course fees are valid for 12 months from date of payment. If you purchased a full course with classroom you are welcome
to join the classroom again at no extra cost (Please note: pick up is not available). Refunds will NOT be given for unused lessons.
Lessons can be transferred to a friend or family member with written permission of the student.
Please note: it is your responsibility to keep the office updated should you have any
challenges regarding completing your lessons within the 1 year time frame.
Telephone Confirmations
Bestway Driver Training confirms all in-car appointments by telephone one day prior to the appointment time except Monday lessons
which are confirmed three days ahead since the office is closed on Weekends. This is done as a reminder only. If you are unavailable
by telephone and have no message system, please telephone our office to confirm your lesson to ensure your instructor has the correct
time and pick-up location. Please see 'cancellation policy' below.
Private Lesson Policy
All in-car lessons are private one-on-one lessons. However, with the consent of the student and instructor, other people may be present
in the vehicle for the purpose of observation only.
NSF Cheque Policy
Bestway Driver Training will charge $25.00 for any cheques returned by the bank as NSF. This charge will be added to any balance
owing on your account and must be paid prior to booking further lessons.
Late Cancellations
CANCELING A LESSON:
We regret that it is necessary to charge a late cancellation/no-show fee of $50.00 if lessons are cancelled by the student without
adequate notice (see below). The $50.00 charge will also be levied if a student does not attend a booked appointment or is unprepared
to take their lesson for any reason. This fee covers rescheduling and instructor time. We will gladly reschedule any appointment
without penalty if given adequate notice (see below) or with a doctor’s note in case of sudden, serious illness or injury.
Cancellation or change of a regular lesson requires 48 hours notice during business hours (Monday – Friday) Please note: not
having your valid driver's license or learners license for your in-car lesson will result in a late cancellation fee (this applies to not
having any of your glass wear etc. if you have restrictions on your license). ICBC requires 48 hours notice (Monday – Friday) to
cancellation or change to a road test. Failure to do so will have a $25.00 fee put on your license payable at the time of your road test.
