Welcome to
Equi-Style
Fashionable, but functional seems to be the
requirement most people want from their equestrian
clothing. Equine clothing manufacturers now tailor
their clothes to look stylish and work effectively. As
every country lover knows there is more to looking
good and feeling good than just fashion.
These days there are many equestrian ranges that
can provide all these things and as Spring and
Summer are fast approaching there are some exciting
new looks to be had.
Toggi clothing ranges from the
traditional to the trendy, suiting happy
hackers and dedicated competitors
alike. Their products are described as
practical, yet fashionable, comfortable
and yet functional.
arah-Jane Fedarb, Toggi
product director said, “Our
customers are looking for
clothing that looks good,
performs as promised and
stands the test of time. With
the inclement British weather
becoming ever less predictable
horse riders need to be
prepared for anything from
scorching sunshine to a
summer monsoon!”
Featured in their
Spring/Summer Xtreme range
is the UV protective shirts (up
to SPF 25) which offers a
higher level of consistent
protection than a standard tee
shirt such as the Rio range.
Sarah Jane knows how
fashion has a much larger place
in the equestrian market than it
did even five years ago and as a
result Toggi’s team of designers
are mindful of functionality,
durability and fashion. Toggi
garments have good style lines
S
and cuts that are key to both
garment fitting and
functionality, to ensure a
flattering fit and unrivalled
performance.
Toggi’s Spring/Summer range
includes the Dyville, an original
down gilet and the unisex
Harrison jacket which is already
proving popular. An essential
addition to any wardrobe, the
Harrison 3 in 1 waterproof and
fully breathable jacket features a
concealed, detachable hood
and an internal, removable
fleece gilet offering comfort and
flexibility.
Sarah Jane added, “Toggi and
sister brand Champion offer a
complete package for both
leisure and competition riders,
offering consistency and
performance, coupled with style
and quality. With so many
members of the Toggi and
Champion team having been in
the equestrian industry all their

lives and leading truly equine

ikeur clothing is
described as the
Louis Vuitton of the
equestrian clothing
market by David
Stuart Monteith
Managing Director of
Belstane who look
after Pikeur in the UK
and Ireland.
“It’s what’s known
as the cashmere effect.” Monty
explained, “You are very happy
wearing your woollen jumper all
your life until someone gives you a
cashmere one and then you can’t
go back. It’s the same with Pikeur
breeches compared to ordinary
jodhpurs. The fit is extraordinary,
they hug in all the right places and
the fabrics last a very long time.”

microfibre more way
stretch fabric is fully
washable, this includes
the McCrown faux
leather seat featured in
their breeches. “Our
denim breeches are now
being copied by
everyone else.” Monty
added.
Pikeur introduced their sports
fashion wear about five years ago.
The garments are at the top end of
the market, not least on price and if
the saying you get what you pay for
is true, then you won’t need to
replace your Pikeur clothing very
often. To that end the range is
fashionable, but classic, it won’t
date.

Pikeur is a global brand which is
sold in 40 countries around the
world. Last year the company
celebrated their 25th birthday. The
design house based in Germany
has a tradition of excellence and is
worn by many world class
international riders such as Clayton
and Lucinda Fredericks, Anna
Ross-Davies and Nicky and Richard
Barrett. Monty said, “Pikeur listens
to all feedback from our sponsored
riders; their views are taken into
account during the design process
and are acted upon.”

‘Reassuringly equestrian’
is how Equetech describe
their high quality, design
lead riding wear. All
Equetech’s products are
designed by Liz Hayman,
Equetech Director, who is
a horse rider herself.
“Being very particular about how
my clothing feels when riding and
knowing many of the products in the
market today have been designed by
people who don’t actually ride, I knew
that l could provide much better
products.
“I can also personally appreciate
how our products not only wear and
last but how they look when you’re in
the saddle.”
After taking over as head of
Equetech in 2005 Liz has
concentrated on developing more
technical products that offer design,
quality and durability to riders.
Their Spring/Summer range is
more discipline based with technical
designs and fabrics used throughout
the collections. Attention to cut and
fit is also a key point this season.
“Based on orders already received,
we predict that our bespoke dressage
tails coat and Balmoral show jacket
will do very well this year. Riders are
able to choose their own colours not
only for the jacket itself but also for
collar, points, piping and buttons - it
really is the personal touch!” Liz said.
Equetech’s trademark overall is
their specialist underwear range. All
underwear is primarily 93 per cent
cotton. It is extremely breathable and
suitable for all climates. “Riders are
looking for practicality and comfort
over how their underwear looks. Lacy,

frilly garments are best

fitting jodhpurs or breeches –
VPL is so avoidable!”
All fabrics used have been
highly researched; the entire
clothing range consists of
advanced fabric technologies.
Liz explained that usually
the design comes first then,
armed with a list of
requirements for each garment, she
sources the right fabric for the job. It
could have waterproof properties or
one that wicks moisture away from
the skin but doesn’t allow body
temperature to fluctuate. The
emphasis is on durability, comfort,
wear and technical properties.
“Recent years have seen heavy
influences of country wear creep into
equestrian clothing, so good quality

tweeds have come back into fashion.
I’ve managed to source some superb
British tweeds, a dying industry
unfortunately, for our Spring/Summer
09 Collection.”
Liz is very proud to be supporting
British industry as over 40 per cent of
Equetech’s products are made in the
UK.
Cutting edge technology is evident
in the Equetech Pro Collection,
including breathable, stretchy
waterproof jodhpurs and breeches
which are machine washable as well
as heat regulating, water and
windproof.
Equetech also have a large
children’s range with the ever popular
punky ponies collection. For the tiny

here cannot be many clothing
brands as distinctive as
TPuffa.
The iconic quilted jackets
bought today are not dissimilar
to those purchased 30 years ago
– these days there is just more
variation in style and colour.
Tori Tomlin, brand manager believes
if a product works, why change it?
“The original Puffa concept is very
noticeable in many of our current
styles. An authentic Puffa has very
specific and distinctive quilting lines
and detailing which make it instantly
recognizable. For example jackets are
always split into 4 panels across and
5 down. Gilets have 8 panels across
and 5 down. The other key feature of a
Puffa is the angled pocket. We play
around with these key identifiers,
always asking ourselves ‘what makes
this Puffa?’”
Puffa wouldn’t be in business if it
wasn’t also a forward thinking brand.
Designers carefully monitor all areas
of fashion, from catwalk to high street
and their job is to bring in just the
right amount of fashionability
combined with quality and
performance. Tori explains, “Our
fashion references may take the form
of a ‘must-have’ colour, a trend for a
particular pattern, for example the
recent obsession designers have had
with plaids, tartans and checks, or
maybe the resurgence of a particular

“Either way they come to us for
reliable quality with a bit of fun
injected. Our best selling gilet is the

a woman’s shaped style usually
featuring our trademark polka dot
prints.”

The majority of this season’s
collection has been aimed at the
equestrian enthusiast; for the active
rider the Harling denim jodhpurs, the
Thurston polo, or the Westgate

the Hopton and Hawstead
competition tops, or simply working
in the yard or out and about at events
the Tunstall rugby shirt, Snape

Tori added, “We are very lucky to
have an extremely broad and loyal
customer base. Our kidswear is one
of the fastest growing sectors of the
business but equally important to us
are those that grew up with the brand
back in the 70’s and 80’s.”
Tori says a typical Puffa customer
is likely to be a regular rider owning
at least one horse, or someone who’s
children or grandchildren are riding
regularly and they themselves are

Puffa began when the brand’s
founder army wife Penny Rogers
came up with the idea of creating
really warm clothing from actual
duvets. She began on her kitchen
table and sold the first Puffa jackets
at Tidworth Horse Trials.
For anybody who wants to add a bit
of bling to their wardrobe Katie
Price Equestrian is a must.
Diamante sparkles and lipstick pink
feature heavily in the former
glamour model’s range.
Despite being busy with other projects
Katie admits her first love is horses and it
seemed natural to bring out a range of
clothing and horse wear. “I set up KP
Equestrian last year as I wanted to liven up
equestrian clothing and bring fashion and
colour to the yard.
I’m a very ‘girlie girl’ so I wasn’t very
inspired by all the browns around. I’ve
always bought lots of my horse stuff from
Derby House so I thought I’d see if they were
interested in selling my range – and they were!”

The Spring/Summer range is Katie’s second
season in equine clothing and she has added
other colours to compliment her lipstick pink.
Her aim is to add glamour to stable yards and
to make good quality affordable clothing. “The
Spring/Summer range isn’t just pink. We’ve
added quite a lot more colour – a bright cobalt
blue, lime, yellow and a really rich navy. We’ve
added a children’s range which I’m really
excited about. Princess has just started riding
lessons so now she can be kitted out in KP
Equestrian too! We’ve got jodhpurs and
breeches – hipster ones so no one needs to roll
down their waistbands anymore!”
There is a lot of casual wear in the range
influenced by high street fashions. The velour
tracksuits can be worn at any time, but Katie
has also included traditional riding wear in her
collection such as gilets, jackets, jodhpurs and
breeches.
Katie’s equestrian clothing combines her love
of glamour and her passion for horses; she
hopes her new Spring/Summer
range will be as well received
as her inaugural autumn
collection. “I’d just like to
thank everyone in the horse
world for welcoming me, both
for KP equestrian and the
support I’ve had for my riding.
Everyone has been just
brilliant. I really appreciate that
and I hope that everyone likes
the new range as much as I
do.”

available in a wide range of colours
so riders are sure to find one to
match their numnahs. An equestrian

oules clothing has managed to bridge
the gap between equestrians and the
Jfashion
conscious public. They have
managed this by spending time with
their customers and understanding
what they look for in their clothing.
Georgina Kirby, Marketing Director said,
“Our roots remain in the countryside and
this remains at our heart and always will do.
Our country customers wanted beautiful,
practical clothing with a dollop of fashion.
So that’s what we do. We are where country
meets fashion. It keeps our customers happy and
it gives a nice dose of the countryside for a much
wider set of customers.”
Georgina says the Joules spring summer range
is their biggest and best yet. Although Joules is
not known as a technical brand, all products are
made to be practical and long lasting. “Our
blouson for example is a wind and waterproof
jacket which is lightly wadded to add enough
warmth for trotting up and cooler rides. As
always we have been inspired by the colourful
lives of our customers, with bold and colourful
prints and surprising bits of detailing on our new
polos, sweatshirts, wellies and wellibobs.”
The company was started in 1980 by Tom
Joule and his father Ian. When Tom designed
some pink flowery wellies they sold like hot
cakes and the rest as they say is history.
Current bestselling items include the Torino
jacket which reinvents the classic padded jacket
with bold colours and a patterned lining. The
women’s Zenena polo is a favourite this season
and each year Joules work hard to keep their
polos looking fresh. Georgina describes it as
having a touch of glamour with metallic buttons
and embroidery. “Our Wellibobs are also a huge
success. These mini wellies come in a selection
of really fun prints. They are spot on for nipping

Rockfish Riders has been on the
scene less than two years, but
their Rflex 360* range has
already become well established
in the equestrian market and is
synonymous with high quality
high visibility equestrian wear.
Jules Aldred is the owner and
Managing Director of Rockfish Riders.
She set the company up after
struggling to find suitable riding wear
for her children. “As a rider myself, I
was disappointed at the quality and
design on offer for kids and that was
the catalyst in creating Rockfish
Riders. Initially a children’s brand and
then by demand we went into ladies,
and most recently men’s wear. I felt
the offer could be much stronger and
much more design led combined with
quality fabrics.”
The spring summer range is based
on leisure styles with technical
elements involved in the construction
of the garment. The designs are
innovative, trend setting and use
exclusive trade mark fabrics. Jules
and her team pride themselves on
their attention to detail and the care
which goes into every product.
The company is currently working
on Rflex 360* for horses using the
latest fabrics and technology. Jules
said, “Rflex 360* is hugely popular
and an area we excel in. Our
production department is a hot house
on personal protective wear. Keeping
abreast of the latest fabrics and
technology is a full time job and our
production team have some of the
best garment technologists in the
country.”
Rflex 360* was born after a
development programme that lasted
two years and was created to upgrade
hi-vis and make it wearable
and flattering. Rockfish
Riders were
pioneering in
challenging the
design boundaries of
EN1150 certification.
These garments are
created using all the
very best compliant
materials on the market to
date and we have teamed
up with Reflexite, the
world’s leading reflective
tape company that
reflects more light
than any other
competitor in the
market place.
Jules believes a lot
of consumers do not
understand the difference between
substandard/none certificated hi-vis
which are currently available on the
market compared to EN1150
certificated hi-vis products. “The main
difference is that none certified hi-vis
does not have to meet any standards
and so quite often is not appropriately
made to keep you visibly safe. For
example, cheap fluorescent material
will dull down very quickly over a
limited amount of time hence not
giving you optimum visibility
compared to EN certified fluorescent.
This will guarantee the
wearer over longer
periods and also have
the correct amount of
reflective tape to keep
you visible to
oncoming traffic. Spring
and summer is just as
important to wear hi-vis
on our country roads as
any other time of year.”
Rockfish Riders
operates out of a
commercial farm in
Cornwall, Jules is
looking into all her
staff being able to
keep their horses on
site so they ride
directly after work.
“Whilst we are all
exceedingly passionate and focused
about what we do, it is important that
we all have a laugh and have an
upbeat atmosphere to work in.”

Summary
It’s clear to see with so much choice on the
market there is no excuse not to look good
in the saddle. Riders can be fashionably
dressed without compromising on quality
or technical detail. The unpredictable
British weather has provided equine
clothing designers with a challenge they
have more than answered – to the benefit
of horse riders everywhere.
