INTRODUCTION OF NYP Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) was established in 1992 and is a premiere tertiary institution dedicated to the aspirations of students and meeting the manpower needs of Singapore. To cultivate a sense of community among students and staff, some understanding on how we should conduct ourselves is necessary. The code of conduct, which is not meant to be exhaustive in scope, will help remind us of the standards we have set for ourselves to foster a campus environment which all of us can be proud of. Our commitment to these standards contributes to the good image of the polytechnic and a pleasant environment for everyone. STUDENT DRESS CODE & ATTIRE Students are required to be properly attired at all times and to observe a sense of etiquette when they are within the Polytechnic premises. All students must be readily identifiable at all times with their faces uncovered and are required to wear their personal Student ID Card together with the School’s lanyard. No student is allowed to put on anything that prevents ready identification. Students who are improperly attired may be denied access to the Polytechnic premises. Refusal to comply with these rules on attire is an offence which will render the student liable for disciplinary action. 31 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 31 13/2/15 8:13 PM The following are examples of unacceptable attire within the campus: Examples of Unacceptable Attire For Female Students For Male Students Attire with offensive messages Attire with offensive messages Singlets Singlets Torn clothing Torn clothing Mini-shorts/Mini-skirts Sleeveless T-shirts Provocative & revealing attire (e.g. exposed midriffs, bare backs, spaghetti straps, cropped tops) Long hair (e.g. covering eye-brows, ears or collars, tying of hair is not acceptable) Artificially coloured hair Artificially coloured hair & earrings Slippers & sandals without heel straps Slippers & sandals without heel straps Caps (except for safety reasons) Caps (except for safety reasons) Full face motorcycle helmets (except when riding), masks or veils Full face motorcycle helmets (except when riding), masks or veils GAMBLING Gambling is strictly prohibited in NYP. Given the difficulty in deciding what is gambling and what is not, the Polytechnic’s stand is that any form of card game, regardless of whether money is involved, will be deemed as gambling. All forms of activities which have obvious associations with gambling, the playing of cards or any other game of chance is strictly disallowed. Anyone found engaging in such activities will be considered to have committed the serious offence of gambling regardless of whether money is involved. SMOKING It is against the law for anyone below the age of 18 years to smoke. Anyone found guilty of the offence will be dealt with by the relevant government authorities. 32 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 32 13/2/15 8:13 PM It is also against the law of Singapore for anyone to smoke within the polytechnic premises. Anyone found guilty of the offence may be fined up to $1000.00 by the court. At NYP, we believe that smoking is bad for health and that every student is entitled to a smoke-free environment in which to study. Therefore, in order to safeguard the general health of staff and students, smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on the Polytechnic campus. POLYTECHNIC PROPERTY The Polytechnic has provided facilities and services at a great cost to enable students to study effectively and to perform well in their co-curricular activities. Students must report any loss or damage of property to any polytechnic staff or office immediately. Students should not copy/store unnecessary files in the computer hard disk at the computer laboratories as this may introduce viruses into the system or clutter the hard disk space. Students are warned against vandalising table tops and other furniture in the lecture theatres, laboratories, studios, classrooms and other areas of the Polytechnic. Students are also warned against damaging any fixtures/furnishings of the Polytechnic. Such acts amount to vandalism and will not be tolerated. They also inconvenience other students who may be prevented from making full use of facilities provided, through no fault of their own. Any form of vandalism will not be tolerated. Students found guilty of vandalism will be severely dealt with. In addition, in order to promote graciousness and being considerate to other users, NYP had launched “Return Your Tray Campaign” during mid2014 to bring awareness to students and staff and also to encourage them to return their own trays and crockeries after eating at all the canteens and food courts. PARKING WITHIN THE CAMPUS Students who drive may park their vehicles at any of the white lots located at Car Park 9 & 10 (near the Sports Complex), Car Park 13 (on the eastern side of the campus, opposite the School of Health Sciences) and Car Park 17 & 18 (opposite the School of Information Technology). 33 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 33 13/2/15 8:13 PM Students who ride motorcycles shall park at the designated motorcycle park only. The entrance to this motorcycle park is located next to the overhead pedestrian bridge along Ang Mo Kio Ave 8. Please refer to the NYP Campus Map. Students riding bicycles into the campus shall park at bicycle racks provided throughout the campus. Disciplinary action will be taken against students who flout the traffic and parking rules of the Polytechnic. DISCIPLINARY REGULATIONS DISCIPLINE Student discipline in NYP is governed by the Nanyang Polytechnic Student Conduct and Discipline Regulations, 1998. The regulations cover disciplinary offences ranging from “minor” cases such as those covered in the Code of Conduct to “major” ones such as vandalism and assault. DISCIPLINARY AUTHORITY All staff are empowered by the Polytechnic to enforce discipline on campus. When any staff encounters an offence committed, they have the authority to: (a) (b) (c) reprimand the student for the offence; demand for and make a copy of the Student’s Card; report the offence to the Registrar or School Director for follow-up action. STUDENT CARE SERVICES STUDENT CARE NETWORK All students have a lecturer assigned to them as their Personal Mentor. The lecturer will take on the role of mentor and friend, providing assistance, guidance and counselling to students whenever needed. First-year students also benefit from the support and advice of seniors on various aspects of their lives at Nanyang Polytechnic. These student mentors volunteer their time to help their juniors settle into campus life. New students, in general, may find it easier to relate to these student mentors. 39 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 39 13/2/15 8:13 PM STUDENT COUNSELLING SERVICE Feeling down? Not coping with studies? OIS helps international students in their initial orientation, adaptation and adjustment to life in Singapore and NYP through orientation programmes and other events. OIS works with the relevant Students’ Clubs (for example, International Friendship Club) and both internal and external agencies to organise activities that provide opportunities for international students to immerse into and have a better appreciation of our local culture and lifestyle. OIS serves as a one-stop centre that offers information, advice, assistance and support to international students throughout their studies in NYP. To find out more information about OIS, please visit www.nyp.edu.sg/ois or email OIS at [email protected]. ACCOMMODATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS NYP does not provide hostel accommodation. The CCA grade will reflect the students’ involvement in the various co-curricular activities both in and outside campus and will encourage participation by all students. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES POINTS SYSTEM (CCAPS) You can record your CCA involvement electronically by using CCAPS, the Co-Curricular Activities Points System. CCAPS is web-based, which means you have the convenience of submitting your entries at home or in campus via the Internet. Log on to e-Services at www.nyp.edu.sg and you can track the involvement of your CCA on-line. In CCAPS, you will also be able to find out more about the CCA Scoring & Grading System and also be able to print out a CCA Summary or unofficial Transcript of your CCA involvement. Upon Graduation, you will receive an official Transcript bearing your CCA grade. In general, you are advised to submit your CCA involvement 1 week after the activity has ended. That way, you will ensure your activity is endorsed and that no mistakes or misunderstanding occurs. If you cannot find the activity (those organised by School) in CCAPS, check with your School CCA Coordinator. If the activity is organised by the Student Affairs Office, you can check with the SA Office at Block E, Level 4. If the activity is organised by an external organisation, you should also check with the SA Office to clarify if the activity is recognised. If you have submitted your entries correctly and if the activities are recognised, your CCA will be endorsed on-line by the organiser of the activity. In the event you face any difficulties, or if you need any assistance or would like to give feedback, you can email your comments to, “[email protected]” 78 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 78 13/2/15 8:13 PM CCA GROUPINGS The co-curricular activities are classified under TWO broad groups, namely, GROUP 1: STAR & CORE ACTIVITIES These are activities that are strongly encouraged as they are in line with the objective to develop an all-rounded student with a sound value system consistent with national interests and will include core activities such as Physical Fitness Test/ New Individual Physical Proficiency Test (New IPPT), National Education, Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor’s Award, National Entrepreneurship Competition, Singapore Robotics Games, National Skills Competition and any other activity that the management of the polytechnic may from time to time decide. GROUP 2: (A) CLUB ACTIVITIES This category includes participation in NYP-organised activities as well as activities of the NYP Students’ Union, Students’ Council, Constituent Academic & Non-Academic Clubs, Student Interest Groups, Sports Teams and Religious Societies. (B) ENHANCEMENT AND SERVICE ACTIVITIES These include: • • • Activities that are organised on an ad-hoc or a one-off basis such as the Polytechnic Forum, Outward Bound Courses, National Community Leadership Institute (NACLI) Courses and National Day Parade Activities organised by external youth organisations, community and welfare service organisations or uniformed groups such as the National Cadet Corps, the National Police Cadet Corps, the Youth Flying Club, etc. These activities must be endorsed by NYP Enrichment courses organised by the respective schools or divisions in NYP, such as talks, seminars, workshops, etc 79 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 79 13/2/15 8:13 PM POINTS SYSTEM IN THE CCA GRADE There will be six levels of involvement as follows: • • • • • • Participation Enrichment Achievement Representation Leadership Service Committee Members or student leaders in CCA Group 2(a) will be awarded points based on participation and leadership after the completion of one year of service. For other activities, points will be awarded based on participation, including awards won from competitions. The maximum points that can be accumulated for each category under the PEARLS scoring system are set at Participation (6 points), Enrichment (6 points), Achievement (No Max), Representation (No Max), Leadership (12 points) and Service (6 points) respectively. This is to encourage students to be active at the different levels of involvement in the activities that interest them. A higher maximum of 12 points is allocated to Leadership so as to encourage students to take on leadership positions rather than merely participate in CCAs. To give due recognition for the time and effort put in by students who represent and achieve honour for the Polytechnic or the State in competitions, there is no limit to the number of points that can be accumulated for Achievement (A) and representation (R). Under exceptional circumstances, the Polytechnic may award special bonus points to a student who has attained an outstanding achievement or made a significant contribution to the polytechnic. The bonus points to be awarded are subject to confirmation by a committee to be appointed by the Principal of the Polytechnic. A CCA grade (based on the consolidated CCA points accumulated in the last six semesters of study at NYP) will be accorded to the student at the end of his/her course of study. 80 78400_NYP handbook#175.indd 80 13/2/15 8:13 PM P E A R L S POINTS SYSTEM COMPUTATION OF CCA POINTS The total cumulative sum of the points awarded for Participation (P), Enrichment (E), Achievement (A), Representation (R), Leadership (L) and Service (S) is the students’ CCA points for his/her course of study in NYP.
