Wish List Executive Summary Morristown Medical Center is home to one of the finest pediatric centers in the region. Goryeb Children’s Hospital, which includes Gagnon Pediatric Emergency Department, Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Sam’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, addresses the medical needs of children from birth to age 21 in one location. With more than 100 pediatric sub-specialists who have trained in some of the finest children’s centers around the country, we are able to ensure the very best health care to those children and their families who need us. Board-certified specialists from all the major pediatric disciplines are supported by a distinguished nursing staff and a child life team. Multiple training programs, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, enable us to teach 36 residents in pediatrics, 21 residents in emergency medicine, and four fellows in pediatric emergency medicine. At Goryeb, we are dedicated to supporting you during this stressful time. Every specialist in the Pediatric Unit provides superior care in a warm, compassionate, patient- and familycentered environment. Our staff includes pediatric attending and resident physicians, a pediatric hospitalist, care and nurse managers, a social worker and child life specialists. We strive to make your child’s hospital experience as calm and comfortable as possible. To that end, parents, grandparents and guardians are welcome 24 hours a day, and we provide bedside sleeping accommodations for one caregiver to remain overnight. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 3 Patient and Family Centered Care Overview This approach to the planning, delivery and evaluation of health care fosters collaborative partnerships between heath care providers, patients and families. At Goryeb, we have moved from a traditional provider-centered approach to one where true collaboration, better communication and shared decision making puts the patient and family at the center. While the initiative started with the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Gagnon Pediatric Emergency Department, it will ultimately involve the entire hospital. High Priority Initiatives PARENT LIAISON | $50,000 The parent liaison would facilitate Family Advisory Council (FAC) meetings; review and prepare FAC meeting agendas; recruit, train, and place families with hospital staff who need family input on projects; coordinate with and support the development and sustenance of in-house family advisory boards; represent families on selected hospital committees; advocate for families and promote the full partnership of families and staff within Goryeb Children’s Hospital and with outside organizations. PARENT AND PATIENT EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS | $5,750 annually Funding will create a library that provides brochures on a wide range of topics from parenting to common childhood illnesses. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 4 Child Life Program Overview The Child Life Program provides therapeutic play activities to help reduce the stress and anxiety that children and their families may have about hospitalization, as well as teaching sessions that allow children to become familiar with hospital routines, medical equipment and various procedures. These hands-on sessions using real medical equipment help children begin to cope with fears associated with procedures such as blood tests and IV insertions. The playrooms found at Goryeb are places where children do not receive any medicine or treatment, and are strictly for relaxing and having fun. Children and teenagers can do arts and crafts projects, paint, or use our computers to make banners and cards. They can read books, listen to music or play with hospital-themed toys and dolls to practice what is going to happen during a procedure. High Priority Initiatives MY HOSPITAL SCRAPBOOK | $10,000 This scrapbook provides a tool for child life specialists to help educate children about the medical environment, as well as to address issues relating to hospitalization and illness. It includes places for children to document their experiences, activities, easy-to-understand medical lingo and more. Using rhythm, drumming promotes healing and self expression and helps in reducing tension, anxiety and stress for pediatric patients and their families. PARROTING PARROT | $138,000 Built into an easily transported cart, the parrot visits patients who are in recovery rooms. Patients can train this animatronic character to speak, repeating whole sentences. Humorous results occur when patients “stump” the bird. PHANTOM HARP | $50,600 This unique harp entertains by allowing children, patients and visitors to Goryeb to play music with various sounds by plucking invisible strings. ART PROGRAM | $11,500 This program will help replenish the bedside art cart from which patients choose art materials. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 6 Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Overview Pediatric Intensive Care offers the most advanced care to infants, children and adolescents with lifethreatening illness and injury. The nine-bed unit is located on the third floor of Goryeb. Board-certified pediatric critical care physicians lead the multidisciplinary team, which includes pediatric critical care nurses, pediatric and emergency medicine residents, respiratory therapists, child life specialists and social workers. Patients in the PICU also benefit from the support of a broad range of pediatric specialists in the medical and surgical disciplines, radiology, rehabilitative therapies, nutrition and discharge planning. The PICU offers round-the-clock admissions, consultation and transport services. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 7 BD Diabetes Center for Children and Adolescents Overview The center provides a multidisciplinary approach to treatment for pediatric and adolescent diabetes patients and their families. A team of five physicians, five diabetes nurse educators, a dietician and a social worker provide clinical care, psychosocial support and educational programs to children with diabetes and their family members. The center also conducts clinical research trials and produces multimedia educational programs for patients and their families; three of those programs are currently in national distribution. The center receives patient referrals from over 1,000 primary care physicians practicing in 23 counties in three states. With 1,200 children and adolescents in its care, the center is one of the largest American Diabetes Association-certified pediatric centers in the Northeast. High Priority Initiatives DIABETES HIGH RISK HOME INTERVENTION PROGRAM | $250,000 A small but significant subpopulation of youths with diabetes — often from underserved families — have chronically elevated blood sugars and have multiple diabetes-related hospital admissions. To provide a more successful and cost effective solution for improving blood sugar control in this high-risk patient population, staff at the center are developing and implementing a multi-component intervention strategy. This program will integrate family support, diabetes management education, multifamily group sessions and community interventions to improve the metabolic control of children and adolescents with poorly controlled type 1 and type 2 diabetes. PRODUCTION OF QUARTERLY PEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY NEWSLETTER | $11,500 ANNUALLY This newsletter is used to inform and educate referring doctors and pediatricians about diabetes and the BD Diabetes Center. PARENT AND PATIENT EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS | $5,750 ANNUALLY This information about diabetes, available in both English and Spanish, is given to parents and newly diagnosed patients. This detailed information helps caregivers make regimen changes to improve blood sugar control. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 9 The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Overview The Goyeb Children’s Hospital Valerie Fund Children’s Center is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a cooperative cancer research project for children sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Active participation in COG gives patients access to highly advanced therapeutic options. The center offers highly personalized, comprehensive medical care for children with anemias, such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia; hemophilia and other bleeding problems; white cell and platelet abnormalities and childhood and adolescent cancers. The Goryeb team of board-certified pediatric hematologists/oncologists, pediatric surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, clinical nurse specialists, specially trained nurses, social workers and child life specialists support patients and families medically and emotionally, an approach that enhances treatment and the prospects of recovery. This strategy combines outstanding medical care close to home with individual counseling and group sessions. We strive to make the center a home away from home while patients are receiving therapy. High Priority Initiatives PARENT AND PATIENT EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS | $5,750 ANNUALLY This information is given to patients about therapies and treatments and to assist them in understanding their disease. THE GOOD NEIGHBOR FUND | ALL CONTRIBUTIONS WELCOME The Good Neighbor Fund supports parents of children with cancer or blood disorders who are in dire financial need. While many children undergo treatment, family members often have to stop working or give up one income. The Good Neighbor Fund helps families offset daily living expenses, such as gas and electric bills, child care costs, mortgage payments or pharmaceutical purchases and ensures that a child’s treatment and care are not disrupted. WISH FUND | ALL CONTRIBUTIONS WELCOME This fund would be used to grant patient wishes for those patients who are too old for the Make-A-Wish Fund (over 18 years old) or for a patient that has already received a wish through Make-A-Wish but may have relapsed and is back receiving treatment. DIETICIAN (2 DAYS/WEEK) | $26,000 A designated dietitian for the Valerie Center would provide baseline nutritional assessments of patients to determine those at high risk, guide parents on proper diets for their children, and offer suggestions on boosting caloric intake. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 10 Children’s Heart Center Overview The Children’s Heart Center diagnoses and treats heart disorders in infants, children and adolescents. The board-certified pediatric cardiologists on staff hold academic appointments at Children’s Hospital of New York at Columbia Presbyterian, making it possible for the center to provide continuity of care for patients who require invasive procedures and surgery. Our fetal cardiology service enables in-utero cardiac evaluation of high-risk pregnancies. Fetal diagnosis of congenital heart disease allows for parental education and the preparation and development of optimal treatment plans prior to delivery. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 11 Gagnon Pediatric Emergency Center Overview Located within Goryeb and open 24 hours a day, Gagnon Pediatric Emergency Center is one of the newest and most modern emergency departments in the metropolitan area. Our staff is specially trained in assessing and caring for infant, child and adolescent emergencies, including trauma, fever, respiratory distress and abdominal pain. In addition, our center is one of the few emergency departments in the nation to employ child life specialists, who help children and their families relax with play therapy and other distractions. High Priority Initiatives TRANSPORT MONITOR | $29,000 A portable transport monitor will facilitate the transportation of critically ill children throughout the hospital for medical procedures. PEDIATRIC PALLIATIVE CARE IMPLEMENTATION: STAFF EDUCATION | $11,500 ANNUALLY The implementation of a Pediatric Palliative Care Program, which seeks to provide comprehensive care to children and families facing life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses, requires education for all health care professionals. This funding will help facilitate access to national conferences and will increase knowledge and awareness of pediatric palliative care. PYXIS MACHINE | $5,700 ANNUALLY This machine is used to dispense medication. Safety precautions prevent dispensing the wrong dosage or possible adverse drug interactions. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 12 Child Development Center Overview The Child Development Center provides multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment for infants, preschoolers, children, adolescents and adults with developmental concerns and learning-related difficulties and behavior problems, including Attention Deficient/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental delay, and multiple handicaps. The center’s team of professionals includes neurodevelopmental pediatricians, psychologists, learning consultants, social workers, a physical therapist, a speech/language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a nurse practitioner and a child psychiatrist. The center offers a wide range of programs, including the following: • Behavior Management Workshops for parents of children with ADHD and other behavior problems, • An Early Intervention Program that evaluates and treats children from birth to three years who qualify for publicly funded early intervention services, • A Special Care Infant Follow-Up Program, which provides screening and referral services for children at risk for developmental delay, such as those with very low birth weight or those who experienced trauma at birth. • Medication follow-up services are also provided. High Priority Initiatives RECEPTION AND WAITING ROOM RENOVATIONS | $35,000 These renovations will move the center’s reception area and waiting room to a larger, brighter space at the front entrance of the building. This renovation would include new toys and furniture. NUTRITIONIST PART-TIME | $35,000 ANNUALLY As part of the behavioral feeding team, the nutritionist would help target patients with autism who are at risk due to behavioral and sensory eating problems. EXAM ROOM PACKAGES | $27,600 — 3 NEEDED AT $9,200 EACH Exam rooms will be reconstructed to provide both an exam area and testing area with a two-way mirror. This setup allows parents and clinicians to observe a child’s actions during developmental testing. MIDMARK BARRIER FREE EXAM TABLES WITH ARMS | $5,750 EACH The exam tables lower to a level where patients using wheelchairs can safely transfer to the table for their medical table examination. This gift doubles the joy – once in support of the developmentally disabled population’s pursuit of their artistic passions and then again for our patients. DIFFERENTIAL ABILITY SCALES-II | $1,650 The DAS-II assesses cognitive abilities of children. It will help with the cognitive assessment and diagnosis of very young children who are being evaluated for autism. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 13 Respiratory Center for Children Overview At the Respiratory Center for Children, a team of specialists work with patient families and primary care physicians to provide a comprehensive range of services for pediatric pulmonary care. The center treats a broad range of respiratory disorders, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, apnea, sleep disorders and recurrent pneumonias. The center also evaluates illnesses, such as respiratory disorders related to neuromuscular and neurologic disease, exercise limitations, lung immunology and birth defects. The center’s pulmonary function testing laboratory is equipped to evaluate mechanical and physiologic lung function in infants and children — a capability unmatched anywhere in New Jersey. It also offers facilities for exercise testing, evaluation of sleep disordered breathing, aerosol challenge testing, and flexible laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy. High Priority Initiatives ASTHMA EDUCATION PROGRAM | $30,000 Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children and teens. The Respiratory Center provides both asthma education and medical guidance to primary care physicians and their patients. The cornerstone of the program at the Respiratory Center for Children is educational outreach to physicians, health care professionals, parents, caregivers and family members. Combined with expert treatment, at-home care and continuing follow-up, education provides patients with the ability to control their health and reach their goals. PEDIATRIC SLEEP LAB DIAGNOSTIC SLEEP UNIT | $115,000 — FOUR NEEDED AT $28,750 EACH In this comfortable and relaxing environment, a specially trained team will be able to monitor changes in breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, heart rate and body movements in pediatric patients. KID-FIT | $250,000/TWO YEARS More than 20 million American children are considered overweight. Kid-Fit helps children at risk for obesity and obesity-related difficulties learn to make healthier lifestyle choices. With the help of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, Kid-Fit ensures medical oversight and offers psychosocial guidance and exercise and nutritional planning. Programs are available for children and adolescents, ages 6 to 21, and for parents to help them make nutritional changes in the home, incorporate exercise into everyday life, and offer appropriate emotional support to help children reach their goals. LODE EXCALIBUR SPORT HIGH PERFORMANCE STATIONARY BICYCLE TRAINER | $28,000 This equipment is fully adjustable with multi-position handlebars and seat for a precise fit. Specific positions can be recorded for each athlete for repeat testing. It will allow us to evaluate cyclists effectively, as well as those who may have difficulty running or using a treadmill. Foundation for Morristown Medical Center Partnership in Caring • 15 Sam’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Overview Sam’s NICU, our relocated and expanded Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, opened in February 2009 and is providing care to the smallest and sickest infants. More than triple the size of our previous NICU, the new 22,000-square-foot space features the latest medical technology, 34 private and semi-private rooms, and a family lounge with computer kiosks, a play area for siblings, and a kitchenette. In this quiet, softly lit unit, parents can care for their babies in peace; have private conversations with doctors and nurses; and spend the night right next to their babies if need be. Services include the evaluation and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, brain and spinal cord tumors, cerebral palsy/developmental disorders, head trauma, hydrocephalus and congenital abnormalities of the brain, movement disorders, Tourette’s syndrome and tic disorders and seizure disorders. The division’s Pediatric Epilepsy Center has special expertise in managing epilepsy and seizure disorders, including board-certified pediatric neurologists with special training and certification in pediatric epilepsy.
