his special edition, Family Journey, has a
T
special place in my heart and which I would like to
dedicate it to Divinia Erlina, my daughter and sole
inspiration to creating dREAMSCAPE just over nine
years ago. Her unconditional support as well my
family have taken this company into new heights
and journeys beyond my imagination.
Like many parents, it started with
having the same dREAMS and strong
desire to show our children experiences
that will eventually shape their
character. The “Right Way” of traveling
could just give us that-opening our
eyes and minds, giving us greater
insight into the world which at the
end shape our character to be a new
person; I know so as I have never
been the same person to my own
past – thanks to all the travel experiences
I have collected over the years. One of
the hallmarks as a parent that I wish
to pass down to my child is curiousity
about the world and cultures that are
different from your own.
While I am always happy to share my own family travel stories,
there are tons of other great travel ideas that I love to showcase
here to like minded family travelers out there. Family journey is always special yet an arduous
projects that require a great deal of time, energy and coordination among family members. But
as time has become more precious than ever, our professional travel designers have handpicked
our top list experiences available to help you get started in 2016. From an educational trip at the
world’s best boarding school, Rosenberg Institut, to witnessing nature at its power when the sky
changes multicolor at Uluru leaving one only mesmerized and helpless of its beauty, to as simple as
spending a weekend at UNESCO listed destination in our backyard. Science has proven that those
who collect unique travel experiences in life are much a happier person in the long run. Isnt that
what every parents wish for their children?
This issue marks my first Editor-in-chief, and I am thrilled to return dREAMSCAPE brand that is
synonymous with everything I love about travel- an experience. We will be making some exciting
changes over the coming editions —please send me a note if there is anything you would or would
not like to see from us as we evolve—but you can be certain we will remain as committed as ever to
sparking the curiosity that inspires all of us to travel in style. I am very excited to see where we will
go together. Let us dREAMSCAPE.

Fitri – Chief Travel Designer
Dear Mrs. Sivananda,
The best time to travel is in February or
March. The weather usually clears up
after the deep winter months, and with
less cloud it will be easier to see
the Northern Lights. The best countries
to travel to see the Aurora Borealis are
near the Arctic Circle such as Finland
and Sweden. Remember to pick a few
locations in your travel itinerary in case
the weather is not conducive for Aurora
hunting.

Mr. John Packer &

your input and observations,
and are more than happy to
answer any questions you
should have.
16

Mrs. Sivananda
Sariputera
Based on dREAMSCAPE’s
experience, could you give
suggestions on the best time
to travel to see the Northern
Lights?
The most notorious fighter jet flying
experience is in Nizhny Novgorod, in a
Russian Military base, one hour flight
from Moscow. Equipped with oxygen
mask and special clothing, you fly in a
MiG-29 fighter jet and approach the
"Edge of space" at the height of 19,000
km. Keep your eyes open to see the
curvature of the Earth.
And for arranging a salmon trip for a
big family, I would keep in mind that the
salmon fishing location should be easily
accessible with accommodation facilities,
but offering various activities to keep the
whole family engaged during the trip.
Option 1: Alaska
There’s a reason Alaska is famous for its
salmon: millions of them populate Alaskan's
rivers every summer, hoping theirway
upstream. The Kenai River, a two-hours
drive from the town of Anchorage, is one
of the world’s few rivers that supports all
five Pacificsalmon species - king, silver,
sockeye, pink and chum. Taking a cruise
southbound through Alaska’s Inside
Passage, from Anchorage to Vancouver,
will allow you to relax with the whole
family in good comfort while spotting
whales, and admiring the massive white
glaciers.
Option 2: Scotland
Scotland has one of the best facilities to
make your travel worthwhile. It has close
to 400 salmon rivers including the Tay,
Dee, Spey and Tweed and can be accessed
almost all year, from mid-January to
late November. When done with fishing,
besure to visit Edinburgh to play. Many
there will be wearing the traditional
Scottish kilt at the yearly Highland
Games, which are very popular with
the locals. Taste the rich array of
traditional fish cooking and track down
the best Malt Whiskey Scotland has to
offer. If the there are enough family
members, staying in a castle is definitely
an experience. Otherwise, a Scottish
mansion is a good alternative.

Mr. Erik Meijer
“I plan to travel to Europe for
the Christmas and New Year
celebrations. Around that time,
it will be winter and thus cold
in Europe. Which 2 places
in Europe would you most
recommend to visit around that
time, and why? What to see/do
there?”
Dear Mr. Erik Meijer
Option 1 : White Christmas
Bring bedtime stories to life when you
combine visiting the Santa Claus Village
in Lapland with staying in the igloss glass
or the ice hotel before ending your
journey in Copenhagen or Stockholm
for a traditional Christmas festival.
Be excited to meet and greet Santa Claus
and his elves, spend the night in ice/gloss
room, cross country skiing, dogsled or ski
mobile safari experience, meeting Sami
people who live in the Arctic Circle. Our
favorite family activity recommendation
is ice fishing then a warm bonfire and
hot chocolate. If you happen to catch a
fish, our appointed team will be happy to
cook and serve immediately for the local
recipe experience. If you are extra lucky, you
might even catch the Aurora. It’s definitely
a holiday that will bond everyone in the
group. If you worry about the coldness
in this area, well, there is really no need.
These resorts provide special clothing to
help you enjoy your trip whilst a warm
hotel and lounges is never far away.
18
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
Option 2 : The King Parade of Spain
If cold is not your thing, try traveling to
Spain as the weather during this period
is mostly mild, both sunny and cool. Start
with visiting the Madrid Christmas
Market, a huge celebration with carousels,
countless stalls, music, dancing, and plenty
of fun. Be sure to grab some traditional
churros and a warm drink to keep out the
chill as you explore. Enroute to the village
of Puerta del Sol with all the crowds to
celebrate New Year’s Eve. Immerse your
family in the Spanish tradition with
the locals by eating 12 grapes in time to
the 12 chimes of the clock at midnight,
a tradition that goes back from the year
1909. Just when you think it gets no
better, end your journey at Barcelona.
Most importantly, be part of the 3 Kings
Parade with its brightly colored chariots,
marching bands and torchlight processions
through city streets. Cultural and culinary
both in style. Just like a dREAMSCAPE trip
should be.
We hope that you enjoy these two options
and look forward to help you arrange your
dREAMSCAPE Christmas Experience.

MY JOURNEY TO
THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTER OF

PURELY BY MY DESIRE TO SEE
ULURU, THE FORMAL ABORIGINAL

THE TREK, THROUGH A VAST ARID
REGION OF AUSTRALIA, TO SEE IF
ULURU WAS WORTHY OF MAKING
THE dREAMSCAPE
FAMILY BUCKET LIST.
First human record: 22,000 years ago
ike most journeys of this kind, you almost
never find what you expect, and nothing can
prepare you for what you find. Rising up larger
than life from the rust-colored desert, the rock
makes you feel incredibly small, as you would
imagine a rock the size of many sport stadiums.
Then the magic happens.
In the late afternoon its deep brown becomes
a deep, claret red. Then, as the setting sun
reflects off stray clouds, it begins to burn an
iridescent orange, like a giant ember fanned
by the wind. Finally, this brightness fades
to purple and finally black into the darkness
accompanied by the view of what appears
to be every star in the universe. The sight of
Uluru changing colors as the sun sets over the
endless Australian outback will stay with me
forever.

VICTORIA
BEST TIME to VISIT
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER
100-280c
One may assume the winter
months (May-August) would be a more
comfortable time to visit, but with Uluru and
the outback, this is most definitely not the
case. Temperatures can often reach below
freezing due to exposure and a complete
lack of humidity. This is not just cold, but
approaching dangerously cold for the ill
equipped. Despite most people’s concerns
about the heat, it’s the cold of night that can
actually prove most discomforting.
S
ince 2011 the Northern Territories and
the local Aborigine, have enforced stricter rules
surrounding visits to Uluru for a number of
solid reasons. The Aboriginal peoples believe
that Uluru is a sacred place and a central point
in the dreaming tracks that criss-cross the land.
Meanwhile the Australian government wishes
to protect both the sanctity of the land for
Aboriginals as well as this designated World
Heritage Site from being destroyed by hoards
of tourists stampeding through Uluru-Kata
Tjuta National Park.
Some welcomed regulations simply deal with
effective crowd control. Dedicated Uluru
sunset and sunrise viewing areas are now in
place along the road as the only places where
you are allowed to stop. One is no longer
allowed to leave the bitumen and wander off
into the dune area unaccompanied. While it is
possible, there are very few tour operators
licensed to serve alcohol or access restricted
areas to provide private, quiet spaces to witness
the changing of the rock’s colors. Unfortunately,
the majority of guests now find themselves
standing in large groups of tourists, on crowded
buses and in a constant struggle for limited,
gated views.
However, there are ways to maximize local
insights and leverage your travel dollar.
One suggestion is to take in the glowing red
sunsets Uluru by booking your own private
jeep and experienced guide who can not only
take you to the best spots directly, but also
serve champagne and fresh juices for the family
whilst having an afternoon picnic with delicious
finger food. Free from the crunch of other tourists
your family is free to experience the rock as
the first people from Europe did, in peace and
quiet.

CLIENT DESTIMONIAL
VANIA DWIJANTO
This young globetrotter has conquered many
continents and she is no princess going about it either.
Her penchant for adrenaline activities, coupled with
her bubbly personality are the perfect recipe for many
riveting travel stories. The following article recounts
her encounter with her absolute favourite animal,
the hippo, in her latest African Safari trip
The family of four were no strangers to
international travel and were looking for a
trip that would capture an intimidating list of
milestones: lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos,
swimming with great white sharks, visiting the
world’s largest waterfall and some zip-lining
thrown in for good measure.
NGALA GAME RESERVE was the first stop
on the itinerary and after a night’s rest at
the lodge, the family were accompanied by
armed rangers on specially-equipped Jeeps.
Vania, the Dwijantos’ daughter, pointed out
that it took some commitment.
“Every day for three days,
the rangers knocked on our door
at 5:30 am and we were out on
the game reserve until 7:00 pm
at night.”
For some travelers it takes years to eventually
see all of the “Big Five”: the African lion, African
elephant, cape buffalo, African leopard and
black rhinoceros. For the Dwijantos, luck and
perseverance had them spot all of the Big Five
during their first day of safari sightseeing.
With a clear Big Five win under their
belts the Dwijantos decided they could
afford to step away from the safari to
satisfy Vania’s passion for hippopotomi.
“All my family knows
I’m obsessed with hippos.
So when my mom heard their
was a hippo raised by people,
and it was within a day’s drive,
we made a side trip to see
Jessica. I got to feed her,
touch her, kiss her
it was the happiest
day of my life.”
Jessica, whose story was featured in
National Geographic, was raised from
a baby to an adult in a special enclosure
that emulates a spacious habitat.
With help from staff Vania was able to
indulge in her dream of interacting with
a hippopotamus in a safe way. She was
able to stand on the animal’s back, pet it
and even get close enough for a big kiss.
“It was a dream come true.
When I have a family of
my own I will definitely
take them there.”
Aside from the extreme wildlife,
the experience of traveling to such
remote and unpopulated areas was
not taken lightly,
“My mom asked us if we were
interested in South Africa and
we all felt, ‘that’s new’and
were excited from day one.”

was changed last minute to zip-lining when

and security at the border was tight and
there were plenty of crowds. Not crowds of
people mind you, but baboons. The border
area between the two countries just
happens to be a favorite hangout spot for
legions of baboons. Some of them as large
as a five-year-old human, these animals
can be intimidating but the ones
surrounding the area
were acclimated to
humans.
CLIENT DESTIMONIAL
While most people would be petrified by the
sight of a ten-meter shark in the same water
as them, Vania was excited.
No scuba diving skills were necessary as one
quarter of the narrow shark cage protrudes
from the water so participants could simply
use snorkels to view the much maligned sea
giants underwater - and close up.
While each person in the family had their
own version of highlights, the one thing they
all agreed on was that the trip was unlike any
other they’d ever been on. Definitely a different
take on the family holiday. Definitely an entirely
different kind of journey.

THE INSTITUT AUF DEM ROSENBERG
HAS AN ESTABLISHED REPUTATION
AS ONE OF THE TOP BOARDING
SCHOOLS IN EUROPE. WHY DO YOU
THINK IT HAS ENJOYED SUCH
A PRESTIGIOUS REPUTATION
FOR SO LONG?
The Institut auf dem Rosenberg, an
international private boarding school
for boys and girls aged 6-19 years, was
founded in 1889 in the German speaking
part of Switzerland. The location was
chosen carefully by the school’s founder
for the health benefits that come with the
clean air and mild pre-alpine climate of
the area, with all the alpine leisure
options within easy reach at the same
time.
With its unique approach to education
and unmatched diversity in academic

FORBES
WHAT UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE DOES
BEING A FOURTH-GENERATION
OWNER AND HEADMASTER OF
ROSENBERG AFFORD YOU ON THE
TOPIC OF WEALTH MANAGEMENT?
I believe that the values of family and
family businesses are, in essence, identical. Successful family businesses are
based
on know-how and values that are passed
on through, as well as honoured by,
generations.
Yet at the same time, every new
generation must use this basis as
a platform to evolve the business and
make it relevant for their time and the
demands of their customers. At the
Institut auf dem Rosenberg we attach
great importance to respecting tradition
while allowing for the latest research,
up-to-date teaching methods and courses
to mix with our daily routines. We then
enrich these programs with the latest in
information technology know-how.
WHY DO PARENTS CHOOSE TO SEND
THEIR CHILDREN TO ROSENBERG?
From our experience, parents choose a
school that they believe can maximize
the full potential of their children. Take
talent, for example. Every pupil has an
area of interest or field in which he or she
is talented. At most schools, this talent is
wasted because it is either not nurtured

enough or, even worse, not discovered at

allows us to focus on and cater to the
individual, not the masses. Expert
consultation is ongoing through each
pupil’s school career which enables
parents and pupils to find the perfect
academic path. We also carefully monitor
and adjust the chosen programs when
and if necessary to help and guide
towards the desired goals.
HOW DOES THE CULTURAL MIX
OF STUDENTS FROM AROUND
THE WORLD BENEFIT THE LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT?
While some parents may show their
ambitions for their children more openly
than others, at the end of the day we
find that all parents have one thing in
common: they want whatever is best
for their children. They want them to
grow into happy, confident and globally
conscious young adults. And they know
that at the Institut auf dem Rosenberg
we have the tools to ensure that students
embark on their future as fully-rounded,
well-connected global citizens, perfectly
equipped in all respects to pursue their
individual dreams.

HOW CAN PARENTS FROM ASIA
COMBINE EUROPEAN EXPERIENTIAL
TRAVEL WITH A TASTE OF INSTITUT
AUF DEM ROSENBERG FOR THEIR
CHILDREN?
Institut auf dem Rosenberg’s own summer
and winter course brand, ARIANA, offers
carefully designed and themed language
and academic courses for children from
the age of six and young adults as well
as parents or grandparents who wish to
accompany them. Camps can be chosen
based on age group and interest from
two different locations in Switzerland:
St. Gallen and Arosa.
Rosenberg Summer Camp students can
add to their experience by choosing an
optional activity focus of either "Art &
Fashion Design" or "Leadership & Public
Speaking".
The Rosenberg Winter Camp offers its
students a unique chance to experience
life at a Swiss boarding school while
improving language skills and enjoying
skiing and snowboarding in the Swiss
Alps. Students joining us (on a weekly
basis) for this experience live on campus
with our regular boarders and thus have
the opportunity to get a taste for the real,
everyday boarding school routine at

INSIDE THE LUXURY TRAVEL
THE PENINSULA
HONG KONG
AC ADEMY
The Peninsula Picnic
BY
RAINY CHAN
GENERAL MANAGER OF THE PENINSULA HONGKONG
Traveling in style is about the best bed and the quality of the amenities.
But the best hospitality providers go the extra mile to put once in a lifetime
experiences on their menus. dREAMSCAPE spoke with Rainy Chan,
GM of Peninsula Hong Kong about The Peninsula Academy,
a set of activities especially for the young.
This year there are two new offerings with
particular focus on the family; the “Peninsula in
Ink” experience, a novel concept that focuses
on exploring the creative dimensions of the
participants. And in connection to this, I think
that readers might find it interesting to hear
how such an idea was developed and what it
entails in practice.
It is about giving our guests a first-hand
experience of the comic art culture in Hong
Kong. Our latest programme “Peninsula in
48
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
Ink” enables our guests to observe and learn
about this form of art, which has the ability to
translate storytelling and become a separate
visual medium. Comic art is a reflection of
society, the history of the community and the
mindset of the artists. Our guests will get
a chance to understand and experience this
through the tour at Comix Home Base and
a meeting with a local comic artist.
The second offering, “The Peninsula Picnic”,
draws upon the privileged ability and charm
of being able to escape the City, in the City,
while simultaneously enjoying a number of
sophisticated culinary delights. Has this
Academy course been as popular as others?
“The Peninsula Picnic” is a family
oriented urban picnic experience, where
guests get to enjoy the unique green
spaces in the urban jungle – the hidden
gems in the vertical city. We take the
picnic experience to next level by offering
a luxury gastronomic experience in true
Peninsula style.
The Peninsula Academy continues to remain
innovative and interesting 15 years on. What
are the key ingredients to ensuring that the
content of the “courses” live up to lofty
expectations?
Exclusivity, authenticity and being
culturaly oriented are the key elements.
We aim to create truly unique experiences
that enable our guests to understand the
city inside out, while the experiences cannot
be replicated by the guests
themselves.
Finally, are there any hints you can give us
about what to expect in the future from the
Academy?
We are constantly planning new, inspiring
and magical programmes. We are also keen
to bring cultural traditions to life while
creating one-of-a-kind experiences, which
had not been previously imagined. As our
city deepened its commitment in art, we
hope to invite our guests to dive deeper
into the hidden but fascinating art and
cultural facets in the upcoming
programmes.

the land of the rising sun.
The Japanese government recently

Indonesian nationals subject to

recommend that is new and not so
common for visitors?
There is a famous fishing performance called
Ukai (Cormorant Fishing) in Gifu Prefecture.
It is a traditional way of catching small Japanese
trout using seabirds called U (cormorants)
in the Nagaragawa River. Master cormorant
trainers dressed in ancient costumes, guide 10
to 12 wild sea cormorants to catch small trout
every night between May 11 and October 15,
except during a full moon or in heavy rain. You
can watch the entire spectacle aboard a small
wooden boat while dining and drinking sake.

What kind of exclusive places would

Japanese Cuisine
Washoku, or Japanese traditional cuisine,
is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by
UNESCO. We hope that all overseas visitors will
please enjoy the natural taste of washoku, made
from fresh ingredients, such as sushi and tempura.
Japanese sake is a must when we dine in Japanese
restaurants. The SAKE Competition has been held
every year since 2012.

AT ONE WITH NATURE IN LANGKAWI
LANGKAWI
is a gorgeous archipelago in
northwestern Malaysia, but when
most people think of Langkawi, they
are usually referring to the main
island, which is 478.5 km² with a
population of around 65,000 people.
It is a great destination for families
and couples who want to get away
from it all, yet still be able to access
high end services and comfort. Even
the Sultan of Malaysia likes to host
his international guests in Langkawi
(and several resorts keep their best
villas and suites exclusively for his
visits).
Langkawi’s beautiful landscape
features white powder beaches,
small villages, rice paddies, mangrove
areas and forests, some of which are
under the protection of UNESCO.
Langkawi is dominated by two major
mountains, Gunung Mat Cincang
and Gunung Raya.
Indonesians traveling to Langkawi
will likely feel that it is like a home
away from home as the cultural
setting and landscapes are somewhat
comparable to Lombok, although
more intimate. Most people here
who were born on the island are friendly and
happy to share stories about their lives.
There are spacious resorts that provide luxurious
comforts and many visitors don’t even want
to leave the premises. There are activities for
adults and younger travelers, such as batik
painting workshop and wood carving and kite
making classes. These are friendly local hotel
stafs to help supervise your kids, and some resorts also employ professional certified babysitters.
It takes only about an hour and a half to drive
around the whole island.

1. WEST COAST
The central and northern sections feature many
resorts, whereas the southern area has long
beaches that are lovely for walks. Pantai Cenang
is popular with locals as a gathering place during
the evening, as it features a public beach with nice
seafood restaurants, small shops and street-sellers
for souvenirs.
2. EAST COAST
Home to Gunung Raya, and is mainly untouched
by development with just some small villages
around.
BEST TIME
TO VISIT
To enjoy the island life at its most serene, come
April through August, which is considered the
best time to come. Don’t come during the local
school holidays when it gets crowded, or during
the Christmas holidays through mid-February,
as many Europeans come to the island to escape
during their winter breaks. October and November
are rainy, so you might want to avoid travel at
that time as well.

3. NORTH COAST
This area is also mainly occupied by resorts,
but they are situated along small bays, adding
more intimacy. The nicest beach on the island,
Tanjung Rhu, is here and is accessible without
needing to stay at a resort. Trips on small
sailing boats are popular and Langkawi’s best
golf course is in this area, while the UNESCO
protected Kilim Geoforest Park is located in
north-western corner.

AWAYWITH
Tiger Blue
by NIGEL FOSTER
Meet the visionary behind the concept of luxury liveaboard, Tiger
Blue. Nigel Foster is a man who lives the life of dREAMSCAPE’s
clientele. He reveals the inspiration behind the idea of taking a break
from the stresses of running a successful business.
76
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
The Tiger Blue is truly an
impressive ship. What drew
you to luxury boating and
luxury liveaboards in
Indonesia?
What defines a luxury
liveaboard experience like
Tiger Blue? Have you changed
the formula from first launching
or have things remained similar?
The initial thought was to build a boat for two
families to have fun and comfortably explore
the islands of Indonesia. There was my family
and the Wilkinson family who are our partners
in Tiger Blue. We are nine people and we often
invite friends to join us. Before we built Tiger
Blue we traveled on other boats and visited
many similar liveaboards so we had clear ideas
as to how we wanted the boat to be set up.
To run smoothly we needed a well-trained full
time crew and in order to have that we had to
operate throughout the year. The result is that
we charter out Tiger Blue for a maximum of half
the year and have rest days for the crew
between charters so everyone is in top form.
If we were running solely as a business it would
be much less enjoyable both for the team as
well as for the owners.
We are not the cheapest nor the most expensive
option available. What I think is very important
is to offer good value for money. Our prices are
comparable to a safari camp experience in Africa
but our safari is on the seas of Indonesia. All
cabins are air conditioned with their own
en-suite bathrooms so it is very comfortable.
The concept hasn’t changed - we cater to the
group that is joining us. If we have a group
that wants to dive four times a day then we
will have additional dive masters aboard. If the
group wants to go fishing or bird watching then
we bring along a marine biologist or ornithologist.
We have a great trip planned next March during
the total eclipse in Raja Ampat where we will
have an astronomer aboard to explain everything.
Do you think that your own
lifestyle have influenced how
you design your cruises? For
example, the chef on Tiger
Blue who can make anything
from traditional gado-gado to
fresh sushi. That is not the kind
of comfort that someone
usually expects on a liveaboard.
I run a bunch of restaurants and bars in the UK
so food and drinks are very important to me.
We offer well presented local as well as
European food aboard and are flexible to the
wishes of the guests. The best fresh ingredients
are key. We are not trying to recreate a 5 star
hotel with silver service but we do not
compromise on great food and great service
in an informal style that suits the environment.
Indonesia is becoming
an increasingly hot travel
destination for luxury travellers
from around the world. Do you
see an increase in Indonesians
among your patrons?
We would love to have more Indonesians sail
with us on Tiger Blue and I’m sure in time
that will be the case. As someone who lives in
London I’m afraid I’ve never visited The Tower
of London or Buckingham Palace. Sometimes it
takes out-of-town visitors to tell us what fantastic
places we have on our own doorstep. I have
been visiting Indonesia regularly for more than
twenty-five years and it’s still my favorite country
in the world to go back to. So many exciting
places, cultures and everywhere you go people
are friendly. I’m sure I will never tire of visiting
Indonesia.

with a workaholic spouse who counts every precious day
of their holiday and can’t wait to get back to the office desk.
I am so used to putting up with my husband negotiating and
cutting down my holidays, that I like a super compact and

83
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK-MONGOLIA
DAY
Local guide picked us up
at the airport and took us
for dinner at a popular
Mongolian restaurant called Nomads.
We ordered delicious Khorkhog,
a Mongolian national food consisting of
noodle soup, curry and mixed vegetables.
We also had tender grilled beef and lamb
that came in a large wooden bucket,
traditional dumplings, and some stir fry.
1-2
12-hour bus ride from Ulaanbaatar to Ulan
Ude through the desolate and isolated
countryside of Mongolia, past the colourless
infinite plains, dusty road, very little traffic,
very little wildlife.
Ulan Ude, the capital of Buryatia Republic,
and a pleasant little Russian town. One of
the city’s main attractions is the world’s
largest Lenin head statue in the middle of
the square.
84

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK-MONGOLIA
DAY
Irkutsk is one of Siberia’s
largest cities. First we visited
the wooden-laces carving
cabins. Then the Bogoyavlensky Cathedral,
Our Lady of Kazan Russian orthodox church,
admiring Soviet architecture and statues
along the way.
Later we stopped at Lake Baikal, the world’s
oldest and deepest freshwater lake. This
took us through picturesque taiga forests
over roving hills. We also made a stop at
the Shaman Rock, at the Angara River. The
tiny village of Listvyanka is located on the
western shore of Lake Baikal.
For lunch, our guide took us to a very nice
restaurant at the city centre serving modern
Russian food. Best meal we’d had so far;
Pelmeny (stuffed dumplings), pirozhki (with
cabbage, or meat, or berries), and caviar
sandwiches - to get into the spirit of
Siberia.
For dinner we had Omul, the Siberian style
home-made smoked local fish, caught fresh
from the lake, accompanied by vodka.
3-4
After lunch we took in the wooden museum
architecture of Taltsy en route to Listvyan.
The open air museum featured a large
collection of original wooden houses and
Buryat tents from the 16th to 19th century.
With day three over, we stayed at the
award-winning eco-hostel, Baikaler, in cozy,
wooden cabins located at the foot of the
forest, on the edge of a well-kept village.
We had Uzbek style spiced lamb Plov sold
by a street vendor by the lake for lunch, it
was so good I had two plates of the stuff.
Then we hired a boat to take us around
lake Baikal. Checked in at the Marriott
Courtyard and then on to 130 Kvartal,
probably the most happening place in all
of Irkutsk. There were cafes, pubs, bars and
nice restaurants along the avenue.
Al Fresco dinner at one of the restaurants
with a local band performing and guests
dancing along with the music.
Today we experienced Retro park, a garden
full of fun and interesting metal sculptures,
and collectible antique items.

DAY
The train left Irkutsk at 7:53 am
to Ulaanbaatar. Each compartment consisted of four beds.
There is something about children and bunk
beds, they just love the idea of bunk beds
and being together in an enclosed space.
5-6
Whenever we were bored, we would hang
out at the dining car to enjoy some coffee
or wine. The whole train ride was an endless
cycle of eating, sleeping and admiring the
picturesque landscape that is part of the
Trans-Siberian Railway.
We went to pay homage to the giant statue
of Genghis Khan, a symbol of Mongolian
culture.
Terelj National Park was the highlight of
my trip to Ulaanbaatar, it was an incredible
experience to view the Mongolian steppe
with such a phenomenal backdrop. The
86
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
tour guide had prepared horses for us to
ride through the rolling green grasslands
carpeted with edelweiss and wild flowers.
We passed by fascinating rock formations
including the famous Turtle Rock. After an
hour on horseback hiked up to the Temple
of Meditation where Buddhist monks do
just that among the tranquil mountains of
Terelj National Park.
The last activity of the day was archery,
one of Mongolia’s favourite past times.
The boys were excited to try out traditional
Mongolian wooden bow and arrows and
were soon competing among themselves
to hit the bull’s eye. Mongolian buffet
barbecue for dinner afterwards was
interesting. We piled meats, greens and
our choice of sauces on a plate and the chef
cooked our orders on a round teppanyaki
table that resembled a warrior’s shield
turned upside down.
DAY
We took the first flight out to
Dalanzadgad to continue our
journey to the famous Gobi
desert. We started our day tour with Yoliin
Am, a beautiful deep canyon with many
rocky cliffs that gradually narrowed into a
frozen ice gorge
7-8
We continued our drive to the Bayanzag,
also known as the Flaming Cliffs, one of
the most famous paleontological sites in
the world. It was here that American
paleontologist, Roy Chapman, discovered
the first dinosaur fossils in the 1920s.
It was an excellent spot to take photos of
the surrounding panoramic views during
sunset.
We had lunch and dinner at the Ger Camp
where we stayed overnight. It was a really
memorable experience staying in the
traditional dwelling of Mongolian nomads
and living their way of life. It dawned on me
that we really only needed a few essential
things in life to survive.
We visited a nearby Bulgan village where
the villagers showed us how to make
different shapes of handicrafts from wool
and offered us a taste of airag or fermented
horse milk. Later it was camel rides across
the stunning Moltsog Els Sand dunes. In the
late afternoon, we visited a saxaul forest,
a type of bushy tree that grows in the
desert and is apparently a camels’ favorite
snack.
It was a joy to see the children playing in
raw nature instead of glued to the glowing
screens of their iPads. My children had
never seen star-filled skies like these.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK-MONGOLIA
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK-MONGOLIA
DAY
Last day in Mongolia, we were
feeling a little blue, not quite
ready to say goodbye to this
beautiful country.
9
We visited the Gandan Temple which is the
oldest temple in Mongolia. The temple and
its huge gold-plated Buddha is the symbol
of Mongolian national pride and cultural
revival.
Our stay at the Ger camp at the Gobi desert
was the most memorable part of our journey.
It was a very humbling experience to live
the nomad's way of life for a few precious
days. It gave us a better understanding and
a newfound respect of their ingrained roots,
beliefs and culture.
In a nutshell, it had been
a great adventure. If I go
back to Mongolia again,
I’d plan my trip around

usually falls around
the second week of July.

• The view from the private spa bale is exceptionally mesmerizing. Photos or words

• Coconuts and coconut water are essential
tools used by the skilled staff. Bathing your
hair and feet in the water is not only symbolic,
it has natural benefits locals have known

A FAMILY RETREAT
PARADISE
by Ryan McClure
If your family members are connoisseurs of tropical splendor,
Amankila in eastern Bali, delivers a world class combination of
sights, sounds and smells that come together on a platter
delivered with truly amazing service.

A FAMILY RETREAT PARADISE
A FAMILY RETREAT PARADISE
staff that go above and beyond in response to any request,
your family will soon find themselves in their own
private piece of this tropical heaven in one of Amankila’s
34 free-standing suites. Each one of these impeccably
appointed - and private - places of retreat and relaxation
are nestled among frangipani and bougainvillea trees,
elevated and intentionally situated in the lush greenery
so they appear to float. The smell of the flowers and
sea mixes to create something altogether unique to this
magical place, even to the most seasoned beach chaser.
With a view of the Straits visible from any of the suites
and a private pool right in front of you it’s time to play
some board games or enjoy some fine dining served
right on your own patio. Ask the staff about “Star
Sleeping” and they’ll happily set up the mosquito net
around the daybed on the patio so the kids (or Mom and
Dad, too) can sleep under the stars in perfect comfort.
When the beach calls your family is in for a treat. Staff
await to whisk you down the hill to a private beach
where you can enjoy watersports like scuba diving, sailing,
paddle boarding - or just watching the sunset with a
cold drink. Similar to other Aman properties, the beIf you’re into relaxed tropical splendor you
have probably spent time in places like
Bahamas, Bora Bora, or the Maldives. Many
people, and families, become hooked on the
smells; ocean breeze with jungle flowers,
fresh fruit in your cocktails. It all comes
together and smells like holiday. For those
of us Sun Bunnies that grew up vacationing
meant slathering on Hawaiian Tropic tanning
oil, sleeping in a hammock to the sound of
waves breaking on a beach and as adults this
is still the definition of decompression. So
what to do when your family thinks they’ve
seen everything? What to do when they’ve
tried all the luxury hotels on the trendy
beaches in Bali and found them all too…
populated? Amankila is the answer.
If your definition of a tropical family getaway
is more discrete than disco, relaxation over
ritz, more mediterranean than Mardi Gras,
Amankila is the place for your next family
vacation. Picked up at the Denpasar Airport
in Bali, you’re chauffeured SUV is equipped
with wireless Internet, beverages and snacks
for the trip to Manggis. Upon arrival your family
are immediately transported to a higher plane of
existence - literally. Elevated hundreds of feet,
the Maskerdam Building provides a stunning view
of the Lombok Strait, framed by a three-tiered
pool and architecture inspired by the nearby
Ujung water palaces of Amlapura. With attentive
spoke experience is often the best.
Aman staff love a challenge and honor
their motto: “No request is too great
and no detail too small”. So make sure
you and the children put them to the test.
The children will love the elevated
walkways to the restaurant and who
doesn’t like the sounds of a Coconut
Grove? How about a massage in the
Coconut Grove? If you’re feeling a bit
more adventurous book Amankila’s touring
boat for a day of snorkeling offshore.
The roof is a giant cushion and while
staff prepare a sumptuous onboard lunch
you can check out some of the best
snorkeling in Bali. Amankila means
“peaceful hill” in Sanskrit and it redefines
both of these English words for anyone
who visits this sanctuary. With a grass
strip helicopter pad this hill feels like
more of a mountain and the peace that
one feels upon leaving this place is so
tangible you and your family will take
some with you when you leave.

TIME TRAVEL
TIME TRAVEL
simplify
YOUR travel
Steve Jobs once said a computer is like a bicycle for the mind. Humans
love technology and there is a great reason for this natural instinct for
tools - they make our lives more interesting and unlock the potential of
our imaginations. Here is some advice for the traveling techie.
LUXE CITY
Harness the excitement of visiting only the best places to drink, dine and
dance, sleep, spa and swim without the long review and text. The polished
interface is smooth and stylish providing a great user experience and you
get free updates for a year with the second year at a reduced price. A must
have app for those that love to explore major cities.

AMBLE
An innovative and inspiring
application from the ultimate
high-end fashion brand, Louis Vuitton.
Amble app provides users with new
ways of capturing their travel memories and
sharing them with family and friends.
The Around Me feature utilizes GPS to
help you discover new places in your
location, you can then record a personal
tour by taking photos, audio snippets,
notes and videos along the journey to
create a digital travel diary. It’s intuitive
interface makes the app easy to use
and the personal tours are great to look
over when you’ve returned from your
holiday and want to remind yourself
of that magical walk from Paris’s city
centre up to the Sacre-Couer Cathedral
in Montmartres.

SPORTS ADDICT
BEST VIP
TICKET ACCESS
OPTION 1
BE AN OWNER OF
A MERCEDES BENZ!
dREAMSCAPE is an appointed agency of
Mercedes Benz to help arrange its VIP owners
access special benefits. By being an owner of
a Mercedes Benz, you will be taken care of
from the airport, meals, entertainment, drinks,
access to VIP areas, luxury accommodations at
River Island, and meet pro golfers. VIP owners
will also receive their very own green jacket as
a souvenir. Booking opens in January and is
often sold out by the end of the week. There is
no waiting list. Tickets are available on a first
paid - first confirmed worldwide policy.
EVERY YEAR DURING THE
FIRST FULL WEEK OF APRIL
LEGENDS ASSEMBLE IN
AUGUSTA, GEORGIA, AND
COMPETE TO SEE WHO
WINS THE GREEN JACKET.
THIS EIGHTY YEAR-OLD
TOURNAMENT IS AN
OFFICIAL MONEY EVENT
ON THE PGA TOUR, THE
EUROPEAN TOUR AND THE
JAPAN GOLF TOUR, MAKING
IT A GOLFER’S BUCKET LIST
MUST.
If you are a fan of professional golf but have
never been to a Masters Tournament, one
can take solace in the same advice offered to
players who walk away without a green jacket;
there is always next year. The bad news, tickets
are hard to come by for the layman. Even if you
manage to get tickets there is the risk of finding
yourself far and away from the action. Indeed,
part of what makes the Masters Tournament so
exclusive is the premium placed on good tickets.
While standard tickets are available, the course,
like so many around the world, afford only so
many premium views. Much like box seats at
an opera, there are spots along the green and
fairways where “those in-the-know, know
where to go.” And much like box seats at the
opera, a strict etiquette is encouraged and
enforced.
The Masters Tournament is not just about the
competition. It is also about the venue. Augusta
National Golf Club is a symbol of exclusivity
and privilege for Georgians. Already a state
known for overwhelming warmth, Augusta
National delivers in its unspoken role as flagship
of southern hospitality to the elite.
Thankfully, gaining access to the excitement
of the tournament and the abundance of cheer
that goes along with such an event is within
your grasp.
110
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
BEST VALUE
TICKET ACCESS
Take the practice round package as your only
chance to be allowed to bring a camera and
take photos. It is also the most economical
ticket.
OPTION 2
If you are not a Mercedes Benz owner and
still want to enjoy the perks of a true VIP,
take the VIP Magnolia Manor hospitality package,
Augusta National’s premium hospitality venue
located right outside the main entrance of the
golf course. The hospitality access provides an
indoor escape from the crowded course with
everything you could possibly need within
its walls. After a day or multiple days being
outdoors, it is definitely a luxury to be served
cool drinks, five-star food and other VIP perks - with
true southern hospitality. Upgrade the experience
by allocating chairs at key holes ready for you
to watch the competition.
AUTOGRAPH
SEEKING FANS
Be sure to be at the Washington Road side of
the club house near the new practice facilities.
The best spots are along the ropes lining the
practice putting green and short-game area,
particularly where the golfers enter and exit.
THE MUST EVENT
Attend the the par-3 contest on Wednesday
where you will get to see players like Jack
Nicklaus, Gary Player and other legendary
Masters champions who no longer play but
enjoy mingling with the crowd.
BEST SPOT
The Amen Corner located at holes 11, 12 and
13. Find the top of the bleachers behind the
12th tee and you’ll see all the approaches, chips
and putts on the 11th green.
Jordan Spieth of the United States and his caddie Michael Greller walk to the sixth
green during the final round of the 2015 Masters Tournament at Augusta National
Golf Club.
BEST PAX
Enjoy the competition with a group of three
to four. Too many people is not advised as one
doesn’t wish to look like part of a human tourist
bus, but going solo can get lonely. This is an
event to be shared with some friends or family
you can laugh out loud with while enjoying a
world class event.
