EDGEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL’S VISION
STATEMENT
As a school, we respond to the needs of our entire learning
community. Students, parents, school personnel, and the
community are empowered inclusively to make important
educational decisions. We take responsibility for the
implementation and outcomes of those decisions. Building
on our strengths, the Edgewood Middle School community
forms partnerships and collaborates to develop effective
educational programs, resulting in improved student
learning and achievement.
EDGEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL’S
LEARNING COMMUNITY:
Provides a safe, nurturing environment and vital climate,
which promotes respect, trust, compassion, and risk taking.
Provides instruction and powerful learning opportunities to
encourage academic growth. Curriculum, technology and
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to be in school each day. Roll will
be taken for each class. If a student is absent for any
reason, the parent is asked to clear the absence in one of the
following ways:
1.
2.
3.
Call the attendance office on the first day the
student is absent and inform us of the reason; or
Send a signed note on the date of return to school
that states when and why the student was absent.
All students must report to the attendance
office/window upon returning to school.
An unexcused absence becomes a truancy in three
(3) and can only be cleared by attending a
Saturday School.
An excused absence is one due to illness, medical or dental
appointment, court or funeral services for an immediate
family member. Any other absence cannot be marked
“excused”.
The reason for an absence should be specific such as:
physician or dental, surgery, death in the family, illness,
court, etc.
We encourage physician and dentist
appointments after school hours.
MAKE UP
ABSENCES
WORK
FOR
EXCUSED
If a student is absent, it is the STUDENT’S
RESPONSIBILITY to see the teacher for the make-up
work and it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to
complete the make-up work and turn it in. As a minimum,
for each day absent, the student has that day plus one
additional day to make up the work and turn it in.
(Example: if a student is absent on a Tuesday and
Wednesday, s/he will pick up the work on Thursday and
then have until the third school day to turn in the completed
work. In this case it would be due on Monday.) Teachers
are neither expected nor required to give large quantities of
make-up work the last few weeks of the quarter for students
who fail to complete work during the quarter. Students are
required to complete all coursework assigned by the
teacher. The term ‘coursework’ includes all in-class and
homework assignments. “Students who disregard the valid
authority of the teacher by defiantly refusing to complete
assignments will receive a failing grade and be subject to
disciplinary action by the teacher and/or school
administration.” (California Education Code 48908). The
Counseling Office will request homework from teachers for
students who have been suspended for two or more days.
Teachers will submit homework assignments to the
Counseling Office within 24 hours of having received the
request. Suspended students are required to have this work
completed upon completion of their suspension.
LATE ARRIVALS/TARDIES
Any student who arrives to school tardy must report to the
attendance office to obtain an admittance slip. Doctor or
dentist appointments, illness, and/or emergency situations
may constitute excused tardies.
Oversleeping or
car/transportation issues will not be accepted as an
excused tardy. The student is responsible for being in
class, seated, and ready to begin work prior to the tardy bell
ringing each period. Sufficient time is provided for
students to pass from one class to the next. As a reminder,
tardies will be handled as both discipline and attendance
issues.
Excess Tardy Consequences (Per Academic Quarter):
 1st-2nd = Warning/Parent Notification
 3rd = Detention
 4th = Detention, a mark of N (Needs Improvement)
on report card for Citizenship for that class period
 5th = Saturday School & Parent Conference
 6th–9th = SART referral, a mark of U
(Unsatisfactory) on report card for Citizenship for
that class period
 10th= Saturday School, ineligible for end of year
activities, SARB referral
Tardy consequences are the result of tardies accumulated
throughout the day. Tardy sweeps occur frequently to
encourage punctual attendance.
ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
Students should not arrive on campus before 7:30 a.m. or
remain after 3:15 p.m. There is no supervision for students
arriving earlier or leaving later than the time stated.
Students must leave the campus and go directly home after
dismissal (unless involved in a school based program).

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOR
The school should be a setting in which respect for rules
and common decency are accepted by all. Rules and
regulations are established for the purpose of maintaining
an environment conducive to learning. In order to establish
this environment, it is mandatory that students behave in a
responsible and mature manner toward all members of the
staff and to one another in all areas of the school program
in the classroom, on the school grounds, at all school
related activities as well as coming to and returning home
from school. We ask that students remember this purpose
and conduct themselves accordingly. Above all, it is
expected that students will respect the rights of others, treat
property with care, take pride in honest work and
achievement, and maintain high standards of courtesy,
work and achievement.
The following are expectations for student behavior.
Students will:
 Comply with all requests of teachers and staff.
 Show respect and pride in the school by helping to
keep it clean and free from vandalism, trash, and
graffiti.
 Remain on campus for the entire school day.
 Behave in an appropriate manner, at all times,
when on campus and in the classroom.
 Only eat in designated areas during nutrition and
lunch breaks.
 Leave mobile phones, tablets, radios, Walkmans,
tape players, laser pointers, cameras, game
systems and other electronic devices at home.
These will be confiscated by staff members and
may not be returned.
 Not go into parking lot areas.
 Carry their Edgewood ID card and identify
themselves when asked.
 Refrain from public displays of affection, kissing,
hand-holding, hugging and inappropriate touching.
 Wait to leave class until excused by the teacher.
 Walk bicycles and skateboards while on campus.
 Lock bicycles and skateboards in the designated
area on campus.
 Dress in a clean and proper manner. Any “gang”
related clothing is unacceptable.
 Refrain from using profanity and vulgarity.
A detention can be issued by any staff member for various
infractions of the rules. Students will take the detention
form home and have it signed by a parent and return it to
the issuing staff member. If the student is unable to serve
detention on the stated date, a phone call or note from the
parent is necessary by 10 a.m. on the date of the detention.
The school has the legal right to hold a student up to one
hour per day for disciplinary purposes. Students are to
arrange for their own transportation on the day they serve
detention.
Classroom teachers have the legal right to detain a student
for disciplinary purposes for ten minutes after any regular
school day without parent notification.
Students may be assigned a 45 minute after school
detention for violation of school or classroom rules. It is
the responsibility of the student to notify his/her parents
about the date of his/her detention. If a student is absent on
the date of detention, it will automatically be reassigned to
the following detention date without any further
notification. If the student is in school that day, but does
not show to the detention, consequences will follow.
SATURDAY SCHOOL
Saturday School may be assigned for behavioral/attendance
infractions. Students are to report to school from 8:00 a.m.
to 12:00 noon on Saturday. Students must arrive on time
and conform to the dress code. Students who are tardy to
Saturday School more than 10 minutes will not get credit
for the day and will have to repeat the session. Students are
to bring school work and misconduct will not be tolerated.
If a student is removed from Saturday School for
misconduct, s/he will have to repeat the session.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY
ELIGIBILITY
We recognize extra-curricular activities, are an important
part in the life of the students. Regular attendance and
satisfactory citizenship are also required. A student must
maintain a 2.0 GPA to participate in extra-curricular
activities. Advisors and/or Coaches will establish a code of
conduct and/or participation contracts which may include
behavior, academic, and attendance expectations to ensure
that all participants are academically successful while
participating in extra-curricular activities. Consequences of
not meeting/fulfilling terms of code of conduct and/or
contracts may result in ineligibility of participation from
extra-curricular activity. Board Policy will determine
eligibility for promotion activities.
All fines and
financial obligations must be paid to participate in any
year-end activities.
DRESS CODE

Board Policy 5132 – adopted: 12/10/91, revised : 04/24/01
DRESS AND GROOMING STANDARDS
The West Covina Unified School District Board of
Education believes that appropriate dress and grooming
contribute to a productive learning environment. The
Board expects students to give proper attention to personal
cleanliness and to wear clothes that are suitable for the
school activities in which they participate. Students have
the right to express their individuality. However, their
choice of dress must not present a health or safety hazard or
a distraction that would interfere with the educational
process. In addition, student dress needs to show respect
for the ideas and beliefs of others by taking care that no one
is offended by writing, pictures, or any other insignia which
are crude, violent, vulgar, profane, prejudicial, advocated
the use of controlled substances, or are sexually suggestive.
Furthermore, the Board believes that all school experiences
should be beneficial and all students should present the
most desirable and positive appearance. Student dress and
personal appearance are essential if the school is to provide
the best teaching and learning environment.
4.
5.
RESPONSIBILITY
Parents, school staff and administrators all have
responsibility for ensuring that students understand and
follow guidelines. Students must follow the guidelines as
established to provide a positive teaching and learning
environment for everyone.
6.
ENFORCEMENT
Each school shall determine the steps it will follow to
ensure that all students adhere to the guidelines. At all
times the school will maintain a fair and consistent
enforcement of the consequences. These consequences,
with any additional examples of clothing that are
unacceptable will be published at the beginning of each
school year and reviewed with all students at the beginning
of each semester and with all new students as they enter the
school throughout the year.

will call home if the student is too ill to stay at school.
Students are not allowed to call home from the classroom
or their cell phone to notify their parent/guardian of an
illness.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
Students with contagious diseases are excluded from school
to allow time for them to recover and to protect the other
students. Parents are required to contact the school
immediately when their child is ill with a contagious
disease. We will notify parents of other students who
might have been exposed so they can be aware of the
symptoms and we can avoid exposing more students at
school.
EMERGENCY CARDS

HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework is an integral part of the educational program at
Edgewood. An average of 15 to 30 minutes of homework
per academic class will be assigned Monday through
Thursday and occasionally on Friday. Homework will not
always be written. Students are expected to record their
assignments in their Student Agenda. Parents are
encouraged to monitor their child’s progress on a daily
basis. It is expected that all students will carry a three ring
binder to keep their work neat and organized.
HOME READING
In an effort to improve each student’s reading performance
and encourage recreational reading, all students should read
20 – 30 minutes each night.
ACCELERATED READER
The Accelerated Reader Program promotes reading growth,
while providing students with the opportunity to read for
pleasure. Accelerated Reader books are available in the
library for student checkout. After finishing a book the
student takes a short computer-based test. Books read,
points earned, and reading level growth are tracked by the
computer program and provide immediate feedback to
students. The AR program is a component of each
student’s Language Arts grade.
MEDIA CENTER
Our Media Center is open for student use before and after
school, during recess and at lunch. During school hours,
students need a pass from their teacher to use the facility.
Students must follow the rules posted in the Media Center.
TEXTBOOKS AND LIBRARY FINES
Edgewood Middle School has a computerized
textbook/library book program to keep track of books.
Class textbooks and library books are checked out to each
individual student and will stay attached to that name until
the book or books are returned to the Media Center.
Textbooks are to be taken home and not left in the
classroom or carried around in backpacks. All textbooks
are required to be covered. Library books may be checked
out for a period of three weeks. Students will return their
textbooks to the Media Center at the end of each school
year. Returned books are credited to the student who
originally checked them out. Students are financially
responsible for all lost/damaged books. Stolen books
should immediately be reported to the Assistant Principal’s
office and the Media Center. If a lost or stolen book has
already been paid for and subsequently found, a refund will
be given. All unpaid charges will be forwarded to your
student’s new school or high school.
